The program was spurred by the need for Amtrak to build new stations. As a new entity, the company did not initially have any of its own facilities – stations and depots were inherited from its constituent railroads. Dearborn/Van Buren opened on October 3, 1897 and closed in 1949. The closed station was severely damaged by an explosion in 1968, and the station houses were removed in 1971, the rest of the station was demolished in 1975.

Warrensburg is an Amtrak train station serving the city of Warrensburg, Missouri. The current station originally opened in 1890 by the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and is built out of sandstone in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. It has seen several remodels and enlargements the most recent major change being in 1984 when the baggage section and loading platform were added. The station houses the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce visitors center.

A motive power depot at Erstfeld station houses rolling stock needed for the Gotthard route, and especially for banking service. A Ce 6/8 "crocodile" serves as a memorial for the legendary Gotthard locomotives.

Susan Hammond Barney (November 24, 1834 – April 29, 1922), known as "The Prisoner's Friend", was an American evangelist. She was the founder of the Prisoners' Aid Society of Rhode Island, did much work with the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society, and was the first president of the Rhode Island Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). She was also largely instrumental in making prohibition a constitutional enactment in Rhode Island in 1886. Due to her efforts, police matrons were secured for the station houses of large cities.

The station is at Little Neck Parkway and 39th Road, about half a mile (800 m) north of Northern Boulevard. Little Neck station is 14.5 miles (23.3 km) from Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan, and is the easternmost station on the Port Washington Branch in New York City. The station house is located on the south (eastbound) side, unlike most station houses on the Port Washington Branch.

The history of rail transport in Tarnów dates back to the year 1856, when the Galician Railway of Archduke Charles Louis reached the city. The architectural complex of Tarnów Main Station, fashioned after the Lviv railway station was completed in 1906 by the Austrian Partition. Since 2010, Tarnów station houses a gallery of modern art, the only such gallery located in a rail station in Poland. Tarnów also has three additional stations: Tarnów Mościce, as well as Tarnów Północny and Tarnów Klikowa, both of which are currently out of service.

The reporters decided if any would make a good story. After that period, reporters were assigned to individual station houses, and watched as suspects were booked and fingerprinted. They often were allowed to talk to them, and if any were deemed worthy of coverage a photo opportunity was usually provided. Bank robber Willie Sutton's legendary response (which he denied ever having made) of "Because that's where the money is" to a question about why he robbed banks, was said to have been uttered during a perp walk held in this fashion.

The video for the song, shot entirely in black and white, shows the story of a man travelling to return personal belongings of a dead soldier to the soldier's wife. The video was filmed in Dorset, south-west England, and features scenes of Wareham railway station, houses and the valley in Swanage, the region around St. Aldhelm's Head and the twelfth-century St. Aldhelm's Chapel. The combat scene was shot at Bovington Camp, where Blunt had been stationed during his service in the British Army, and features soldiers from the camp.

After graduation, Zettervall was licensed as an architect and first worked for his father who was chief of Board superintendent for the administration of state buildings (Överintendentsämbetet). In 1890 he was recruited by Adolf W. Edelsvärd (1824–1919) to work on the architectural office of the Swedish national railway system, Statens Järnvägar. When Edelsvärd retired in 1895, Zettervall first became acting architect and in 1898 he became the National Railroad's chief architect until 1931. During his career, Hann Zettervall draw about 260 station houses which were built throughout Sweden.

Within the Operations Wing, the station houses No. 32 (The Royal) Squadron RAF, and the Comms Fleet Force Headquarters. 32 Squadron flies two BAe 146 CC.2 four-engine VIP short range transport aircraft and two BAe 146 QC versions, with one Leonardo GrandNew A109SP helicopter. As part of the Green Line, Pulaski is used by those traveling between the West Garfield Park neighborhood and other areas served by the line, including Oak Park and Forest Park, the Loop, and the South Side. Trains to Harlem/Lake arrive approximately every ten minutes; trains toward Ashland/63rd and Cottage Grove arrive every ten minutes as well, and alternating trains go to each terminus. Pulaski has separate station houses and fare controls for the inbound and outbound platforms. Farecard vending machines are present at both entrances.

There are two station houses, both of which provide entry and exit: the original station house south of 72nd Street, and the new one north of 72nd Street. The entrance to the original station house is one of a few surviving examples designed by Heins & LaFarge, which designed elements of many of the original IRT subway stations. The crossovers and elevator are only in the northernmost station house. This control house has two staircases and one elevator from each platform going up to a crossover, where on both sides turnstile banks lead to both 72nd and 73rd Streets.

Interior atrium Cityplaza One, a 27-storey office building completed in 1997 "Ice Palace" skating rink Cityplaza () is an office and shopping development, owned and managed by Swire Properties, at 18 Taikoo Shing Road, Taikoo Shing, Hong Kong. It is adjacent to Taikoo Place, another office complex developed by Swire. The six-level shopping centre, connected to Tai Koo Station, houses more than 170 shops, restaurants, a cinema and an indoor ice rink. Cityplaza constantly updates its seasonal decoration, and also has frequent art, sport and other exhibitions in the public space near the MTR station.

Beverley was built with a double span trainshed, supported in the middle by cast iron columns. Bridlington also had a two road engine shed and turntable. Smaller stations were generally built at the crossing of a main road and the railway, with a two-storey station house incorporating both living accommodation and railway facilities; the station houses generally had a columned entrance portico, or a slab fronted stone doorcase at one entrance. Cottingham station was intermediate in design, with an office range as at the larger stations, with attached station master's house, but without a trainshed.

Roeebud Hospital, part of Peninsula Health is located on Point Nepean Road, to the West of Rosebud's main business district. It is supported by a recently constructed ambulance station houses with 2 Paramedic Ambulance units, while another station on the Eastern side of the town, houses a Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) unit. Within the quadrangle Boneo Road, Eastbourne Road, Hinton Street and Besgrove Street are many of Rosebud's utility, community and emergency services infrastructures. Rosebud's fire and police services are located on Boneo Road, with Rosebud's fire services being staffed by Career and Volunteer firefighters.

The town does not have a railway station and is served by the railway stations of Edessa and Skydra, while in the period 1916-1936 there was a railway station, since there was a railway line from Skydra to Aridea and Orma that closed in 1936. Railway Station, houses the Museum of Natural History. On February 19, 2019, the construction of the railway line Agios Athanasios – Chalkidona – Koufalia – Pella – Nea Pella – Giannitsa – Galatades – Karyotissa – Dafni – Kalivia – Skydra-Edessa and bypass from Skydra to Aridaia was announced, however no study has been presented, and it is currently unknown when the project will be completed.

The terminal at South Waterfront The lower (South Waterfront) station houses the tram's engines in a reinforced concrete basement and also has ticketing facilities and the control room. The upper station is a freestanding steel and concrete tower above grade and houses the tram's counterweight. It is structurally separate from nearby OHSU Hospital and connects to the hospital's ninth floor via a skybridge over SW Campus Drive, which winds through the middle of the University. Structural separation between the tram and the hospital is necessary to avoid vibrations from tram machinery interfering with delicate microsurgery performed in the hospital.

On the West Hempstead Branch, 's station house is the only one originally built during the first two decades of the 20th century, although it is not recognized as a historic landmark. The elaborate station house was one of the few to avoid modernization during the mid-to-late 20th century and has retained the original grand decorative construction. When the Babylon Branch was elevated in the post-WWII era, former station houses in Wantagh and Lindenhurst were moved away from the tracks. The former Wantagh station was transformed into a museum, and also listed on the NRHP.

Mawson Station is a base for scientific research programs including an underground cosmic ray detector, various long-term meteorological aeronomy and geomagnetic studies, as well as ongoing conservation biology studies, in particular of nearby Auster rookery, a breeding ground for emperor penguins and Adélie penguins. Mawson Station houses approximately 20 personnel over winter and up to 60 in summer. It is the only Antarctic station to use wind generators for over 70% of its power needs, saving over of diesel fuel per year. It is accessible by sea for only a short period each austral summer, between February and March.

Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigade, established in 1873, has relocated from its long-held home in Station Street, to a new site in Helm Street, adjacent to Charcoal Gully. The new fire station houses four firefighting appliances and facilities for its volunteer fire fighters. The Country Fire Authority's District 2 Headquarters have been relocated, from their former site atop Bendigo's Fire Station, to the site of the old Don Murray's Windermere Hotel, at the intersection of Lockwood Road and Helm Street. A number of old churches, built in the mid-1800s, give testimony to a well-established community with strong British ties.

William Lafayette Strong, a reform-minded Republican, won the 1894 mayoral election and offered Roosevelt a position on the board of the New York City Police Commissioners. Roosevelt became president of the board of commissioners and radically reformed the police force. Roosevelt implemented regular inspections of firearms and annual physical exams, appointed recruits based on their physical and mental qualifications rather than political affiliation, established Meritorious Service Medals, and closed corrupt police hostelries. During his tenure, a Municipal Lodging House was established by the Board of Charities, and Roosevelt required officers to register with the Board; he also had telephones installed in station houses.

Free parking is available on a small lot adjacent to the northbound platform, which is owned by the MTA, the agency that controls the rail line. The brick station house is unusually positioned on the northbound side at platform level, unlike other SIR station houses, which are usually located on street level. The Dongan Hills station house had a ticket booth and benches until 1987, and then a vending machine for tokens until July 4, 1997 when the fare was eliminated for all stations south of St. George. South of this station, there is an additional third track that once served a coal distributor.

This station has two entrances/exits, both of which are station houses built within the viaduct's concrete structure. The main one is at the west (geographic south) end of the station and has two staircases and one turnstile bank to each platform, token booth, and four street stairs built within the viaduct's support pillars. These stairs lead to all four corners of 46th Street and the parking lot underneath the viaduct and between the two sides of Queens Boulevard. This entrance does not allow a free transfer between directions (even though it has the layout that could allow one as both turnstile banks lead to the center of the station house).

Cottage-style station houses are suspended over the line at local stations at Beverley and Cortelyou Roads, and at the express station at Newkirk Plaza. Past Newkirk Plaza the line continues in an open cut, then begins to rise to street level at the north end of Avenue H station. Sheepshead Bay station, looking northward across the express tracks The station house at Avenue H is a wooden structure built in 1905 and originally housed a real estate office for the sale of homes in the new Fiske Terrace community surrounding the station. The building was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2004.

The Tarapur nuclear power station houses two boiling water reactors (BWRs), each of 200 MW (De-rated to 160MW), the first in Asia, and a recent unit with two pressurised heavy water reactors each of 540 MW. This PHWR based power station is not only the largest nuclear power reactor in the country but also the largest power unit in India. It was commissioned seven months ahead of schedule, at a cost much lower than the original estimate, by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India. Tarapur Atomic Power Station (320 MW) (T.A.P.S.) was constructed by the American companies Bechtel and GE near village Akkarpatti.

A rail line owned by Canadian National Railway runs through West Gormley; it is CN's primary freight corridor connecting Greater Toronto to Northern Ontario and Western Canada. In 1907, a station was constructed in Gormley on Station Street, south of the original Stouffville Sideroad. The arrival of the railway was significant in the development of New Gormley, as a cluster of businesses that relied on the rail service grew up around the station. Houses of the owners and other related building contributed to further expansion of the community, which by the 1920s housed a general store, a blacksmith's shop, a garage, a planing mill, a grain elevator and feed mill, and a cement block and tile company.

Finally after attacks on the Central Overland stage stations and coaches in the early 1860s, California Volunteers of the Union Army, under Brigadier- General Patrick E. Connor, attacked the Goshutes, killing many and forcing the survivors to sign a treaty. The treaty did not give up land or sovereignty but did agree to end all hostile actions against the whites and to allow several routes of travel to pass through their country. They also agreed to the construction of military posts and station houses wherever necessary. Stage lines, telegraph lines, and railways would be permitted to be built through their domain; mines, mills, and ranches would be permitted and timber could be cut.

On 2 April 1936 the entire infrastructure of the line was sold piecemeal at auction; excluding track, the buildings and structures at Wood Siding fetched a total of £9 2s 6d (about £ in ). Aside from the station houses at Westcott and Brill, which were sold separately, the auction raised £112 10s (about £ in ) in total. Wood Siding station was demolished shortly after closure; the abutments of the bridge which carried the station and sidings remain intact. With the stations at Wood Siding and Brill closed, and the Great Western Railway's Brill and Ludgershall railway station inconveniently sited, the GWR opened a new station on the Chiltern Main Line nearby at Dorton Halt on 21 June 1937.

Ironically, most of the real-estate development that did occur at the time was attracting wealthier residents who owned their own automobiles, frequently chauffeur-driven, and used them instead of public-transportation for local trips. While the populations of some communities served by the NYWB did grow between 1912 and 1937, the growth was not large enough or fast enough to provide sufficient business for the railroad, and service was discontinued on December 31, 1937. The only signs of the railway that are left can be found in a few remaining station houses, most notably the Quaker Ridge station, currently a private residence, and the former Wykagyl station, now part of a shopping center.

One of the component fighter planes of Jet Kiss, which hangs above the station's platform Capitol Hill station houses three pieces of public art as part of Sound Transit's system-wide art program. Mike Ross's Jet Kiss consists of a pair of disassembled, pink and yellow fighter jets that hang suspended above the platform. The piece, which initially met with public backlash over its use of war planes, references both the city's aviation industry and the city bird, the blue heron. Capitol Hill cartoonist Ellen Forney has two murals in the station's north and west entrances, Crossed Pinkies and Walking Fingers, which portray simple, large hands outlined against a bright red background.

1901 Central New England Railway Map (Catskill Archive) In 1911, the NY&H; passenger station was replaced by a new station built by NYC, but all three station houses still survive to this day. It was one of the stations on the Harlem Line to serve the Berkshire Hills Express and other limited stop trains that went from New York City all the way to Pittsfield, Massachusetts and North Adams, Massachusetts in the Berkshires. Formalized training was introduced with the opening of a "police school" which included instruction in department regulations, law courses taught by the District Attorney and local judges, and first aid taught by the local Red Cross. By 1914, the city had grown to 216,261 and the department employed 250 officers. Operations expanded to include station houses in the northern and eastern sectors of the city, while headquarters and the central patrol district remained in city hall. This restoration created a museum area for the National Park Service on the first floor; a waiting area, gift shop, and cafe on the second floor; and office spaces on the third and fourth floors. Exterior work included the construction of an elevator tower; third, display track; a second platform; handicapped passenger accessibility ramp; and the restoration of the platform shelters, WM employee memorial, and the pedestrian railroad underpass. Today the building is part of a preservation district called Canal Place, a facility operated by the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority. The station houses offices of the Authority, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, a visitors center for the C&O; Canal National Historic Park, and leased offices to local officials and businesses.

Upon the withdrawal of London Transport services the railway and stations reverted to the control of the by now almost dormant Oxford & Aylesbury Tramroad Company. With no funds and no rolling stock of its own the O&ATC; was unable to operate the line, and on 2 April 1936 the entire infrastructure of the line was sold at auction; the most expensive lot sold was the platform of Waddesdon Road station, which fetched £7 10s (about £ in ). Excluding the station houses at Westcott and Brill, which were sold separately, the auction raised £112 10s (about £ in ) in total. Nee Soon South Single Member Constituency (Traditional Chinese: 義順南單選區; Simplified Chinese: 义顺南单选区) is a defunct single member constituency consisting of Yishun's Neighbourhood 8 (Khatib),part of Neighbourhood 7, near Springleaf MRT Station, houses and condominiums along Kebun Baru and private residential areas along Sembawang Road(near Sembawang Army Camp).It was formed after Yishun had been developed since 1988 when the pre-independence era Nee Soon ward was broken up into several wards. It was absorbed into Ang Mo Kio GRC in 1997 after the Singapore Democratic Party had lost narrowly there in 1991 elections until 2011 when it was released and together with other wards in Yishun, it formed the present Nee Soon GRC.

Of the main building works only the contracts for station houses remained to be awarded. The bascule bridge on the Ouse at Selby The Ouse bridge was required by the 1836 Act to have an opening arch of , whilst the Ouse at Selby was nearly 200 ft in width, with an underlying geology consisting of silt, quicksand and then hard clay. The bridge consisted of two main spans, one opening; plus sections on either side from land to the first pier and to the second pier, and a section across the central piers. Each span consisted of six cast iron longitudinal ribs, with one rib under the line of each rail and two outer ribs on either side under a handrail.

When the Second World War broke out, he was too old for combat. Instead he enlisted for the Home Front, saving countless lives in Southwark as a firefighter during the Blitz, having completed his training with the fire service in 1939. In 1943, Roberts was made a section leader and in the King's 1944 Birthday Honours he was awarded the British Empire MedalLondon Gazette, 2 June 1944, page 2680 "for general duties at New Cross Fire Station" and for his part as a founder and pioneer of the Discussion and Education groups of the fire service throughout the Second World War. Thousands of men and women would turn up to such groups at their local station houses every week in this government-inspired effort at consciousness-raising.

The new embankment at Argyle Station in 1916 The site of Argyle station was first used as Argyle Park on the Chicago and Evanston branch of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad route, which opened on May 21, 1885. On opening, the station houses along the route were described as "attractive frame structures built in the Gothic and Queen Anne styles." In 1908, the Northwestern Elevated Railroad was extended north from Wilson, using the tracks of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad, and a new station was constructed on the site of the previous depot. The station was again rebuilt to a design by architect Charles P. Rawson when the tracks between Wilson and Howard were elevated onto an embankment between 1914 and 1922.

Thus, in 1845, with the support of Tammany Hall, the Democratic Party political machine, Havemeyer was nominated for the office of Mayor of New York, "laying stress on the fact that he was a native New Yorker." His opponent was incumbent mayor James Harper. In April, he was elected by a large majority and served a one-year term, from 1845 to 1846. The New York State Legislature approved a proposal to authorize creation of a New York City police force on May 7, 1844, along with abolition of the nightwatch system. During Havemeyer's administration, the NYPD was organized on May 13, 1845, with the city divided into three districts, with courts, magistrates, clerks, and station houses being set up.

The railway line to Calicut (now Kozhikode) was opened to traffic on 2 January 1888 and at that time was western terminus of the Madras Railway. The first line in Malabar was laid between Chaliyam and Tirur, the former an important port town, back then. With the arrival of the new line to Calicut and its growth as an administrative centre, Chaliyam diminished in significance and the railway line to it was subsequently abandoned. The station houses several vintage fixtures including a recreation club named the Railway Institute built by the British adjacent to the station in 1888 to serve as a venue for the social life of the Railways' employees, and a cast iron mechanical pump set that was imported from England to pump water into steam locomotives.

The line is still in use today as part of the Leeds to Morecambe Line, although there are no stops - Melling station was closed as an economy measure in 1952, whilst the other two suffered the same fate when the local stopping service over the line was withdrawn by the British Transport Commission in September 1960. All three station houses survive and are still used as private dwellings. Trains continue from Wennington to Leeds over former "little" North Western Railway metals. The original connection along the northern side of the triangular junction between the Joint line and the Furness Line at Carnforth was removed in 1998 after several years of disuse, meaning that any through trains using the route to reach destinations toward Barrow now have to reverse at Carnforth station.

Whiteman Village Junction Station houses the former station buildings from Claisebrook Station (Platform 1/Ticket Office), Subiaco Station (Platform 2/3, Party Room), and Signal cabins from Subiaco and Fremantle (Both are currently not operational). Down at Mussel Pool: The station building is from Nungarin (And was transported to BBR in 1989 with assistance from the Australian Army's 22nd Construction Squadron. There are also two signal Cabins, Collie (No longer operational, now located at parker siding), and Cottesloe, which is fully operational located at the northern end of the Mussel Pool platform.

There is level access to the station from the car park on the south-east side and also from the area in front of the milk factory on the north-west side which can be reached by the road bridge that spans the tracks just to the south-west of the station. Buses to Dartmouth operate from the car park on the south-east side. A footpath from here leads under the viaduct at the north-east end of the station to a footbridge that crosses the River Dart alongside the railway to reach Totnes Riverside station, from where trains run to Buckfastleigh railway station. The industrial complex on the north-west side of the station houses the milk factory; the grey stone building behind the signal box is the atmospheric engine house.

Ironically, it was British Gypsum's intention to renew rail freight traffic that was the catalyst that allowed the GCR(N) to buy the line and restore it initially for freight use. At East Leake station, houses were built on the former goods yard in the 1980s and some were built only yards from the remaining track. The disused nature of the line combined with a solicitor's error led the new occupants to believe that the line was closed, but BR had never listed the line as closed and could have resumed operations at any time. However, when the GCR(N) applied for a Transport and Works Act 1992 Order to purchase and operate the line, objections from local residents resulted in a permanent limit on hours of passenger train operation through the former East Leake Station and the station remaining closed.

Jieh is home to Lebanon's largest and oldest thermal power plant. Located on the southern tip of Jieh's border with neighbouring town Wadi El Zeina, this power station houses 5 units; the first two Toshiba units having been installed in 1970, while the three remaining turbines from the Brown Boveri Company in Switzerland were put into service later on between 1980 and 1981. The Toshiba units produce 65MW while the Brown Boveri Company (BBC) units each produce 72MW of electricity, totalling 346MW for the Jieh plant when at full capacity. Although this is only the second highest total capacity after Zouk from Lebanon's 7 thermal power plants, it must be commended for being the first and only one from during the 1970s and mid 1980s until the first unit at Zouk was put into service in 1984.

The City of Uniontown Bureau of Fire is a combination career/volunteer department operating out of three stations (two staffed and one reserve), and provides services including fire suppression, fire prevention, various aspects of rescue operations, pre fire and disaster planning, fire safety consultation services, disaster response along with city Emergency Management personnel, and a number of other public services. EMS service is provided by Fayette EMS, which replaced the former Uniontown Fireman's Ambulance in July 2013. The bureau has 4 Engines (pumping apparatus), 2 Trucks (aerial apparatus), a heavy rescue unit, a squad truck, and a command S.U.V. Station 1 or, Central Station, is located downtown on North Beeson Boulevard at Penn Street. Central Station houses Engine #1, Engine #4, Truck #1, Rescue, Squad, Command Unit, and provides housing for two Fayette EMS units as well.

Since the 1990s, many station houses along the branch have been rebuilt, including the entire platforms at Seaford from July 2008 to July 2009, Massapequa from late 2013 to mid 2015, and Wantagh from late 2016 to late 2018. Additionally, from July 2007 to April 10, 2011 the signals, switches, and gantries were replaced between Wantagh and Amityville, with color light signals replacing the old position-light signals installed during the elevation of that section in 1973, and work is underway is well into the closing stages of a pocket track East of the Massapequa station that will run in between the two running tracks, this was to be completed by Spring 2016, but is currently on hiatus. Plans for the future include the modernization of Babylon Interlocking, viaduct track replacement at certain stations, replacement of platforms, escalators, and elevators at Babylon.

The trackbed from Draycote (southwest of the former Dunchurch station) to Birdingbury has been surfaced by Sustrans as part of National Cycle Network Route 41. The long straight stretch of trackbed from the A423 across Marton Moor to the cutting near Hunningham is mostly clear of undergrowth and is regularly used by walkers; however, there is no legal right of way and this section can be very muddy in winter. The station houses at Dunchurch and Birdingbury are now private residences (even the platforms are still in place at Birdingbury) but there is little trace of Marton station itself and a small industrial estate occupies the site. Further west, a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) stretch of trackbed from the Fosse Way to the Grand Union Canal, titled 'Offchurch Greenway' and also part of Route 41, is well surfaced and maintained.

The new position consolidated the responsibility and control of the police force under one person instead of individual chiefs for each police district. 1885: The first call boxes were installed in the area around Huntington Avenue (later renamed 25th Street) in the Harwood neighborhood, south of Waverly, North Avenue, (then also known as Boundary Avenue - the former city limits of 1816-1888), near Jones Falls, and 28th Street (also in Waverly, off Greenmount Avenue/York Road). 1886: A new station was built in Mount Winans, (also now in the southwest portion of the City since 1919). 1888: A portion of Baltimore County was annexed by Baltimore City. The number of officers in the Baltimore County Police Department was cut from 33 to 10 as officers and station houses were absorbed into the Baltimore City Police Department (originally organized as a nightwatch and constables in 1784, reorganized under supervision of the Governor of Maryland in 1860) on the western and northern "precincts" adjacent to the City.

There were three coal mines that operated in Coalville from the 1820s until 1986. Abbey Pumping Station houses four enormous steam powered beam engines built in Leicester in the 1890s in the Vulcan factory owned by Josiah Gimson, whose son Ernest Gimson was an influential furniture designer and architect of the English arts and crafts movement. Engineering companies today include sports car makers Noble Automotive Ltd in Barwell and Ultima Sports Ltd in Hinckley, Triumph Motorcycles in Hinckley, Jones & Shipman (machine tools), Caterpillar Redford (Plant machinery), Plant manufacturers Metalfacture Ltd (sheet metal work), Richards Engineering (foundry equipment), Transmon Engineering (materials handling equipment), Trelleborg Industrial AVS in Beaumont Leys (industrial suspension components), Parker Plant (quarrying equipment), Aggregate Industries UK (construction materials), Infotec in Ashby-de-la-Zouch (electronic information display boards), Alstec in Whetstone, Leicestershire (airport baggage handling systems), and Brush Traction (railway locomotives) in Loughborough. Local commitment to nurturing the upcoming cadre of British engineers includes apprenticeship schemes with local companies, and academic-industrial connections with the engineering departments at Leicester University, De Montfort University, and Loughborough University.
