We have a flow and he isn't able to see it", Nate Newton said, "Lassic was a nice kid, but if we expected to get back to the Super Bowl, we needed Emmitt in the lineup". In 1994, he was limited with a torn ligament he suffered in his right knee during a pre-season game, until being placed on the injured reserve list on December 6, 1994. In Cowboys lore, he is remembered for being the starting running back for the first two games of the 1993 season when Smith held out in a contract dispute.

Prosise alongside Michael's significant reduction in effectiveness on the field.
After the Dolphins lost starting running back Lamar Miller to the Houston Texans via free agency, Ajayi was appointed the de facto starter going into the season. He was activated the following week and had five carries for 14 yards against the New England Patriots after Foster was sidelined in the second half due to a groin injury.
While the 2009 International Bowl marked the first appearance of the Buffalo Bulls in a bowl game, it was not the first time the school had been invited to a bowl. Fifty years earlier, the 1958 Buffalo Bulls team finished with a record of 8–1. They were awarded the Lambert Cup, given to the best small college team in the eastern US, and received a bid to play in the 1958 Tangerine Bowl, where they would face Florida State. There was one catch: the team's African-American players—starting running back Willie Evans and backup defensive end Mike Wilson—would not be allowed to play.
Though Arkansas lost its remaining conference game against Missouri, the Razorbacks were still the first unranked team in college football history to shut out two consecutive ranked opponents. Bielema led Arkansas to a Texas Bowl victory in the postseason, defeating Texas handily, 31–7. In Bielema's third season, the team suffered the loss of returning 1,190-yard starting running back Jonathan Williams before the season. Lynch played his first game of the 2009 season against the Miami Dolphins and played the rest of the season. Beginning November 29, he was replaced as the Bills' starting running back by Fred Jackson, who had the first 1,000-yard rushing season of his career.

Meanwhile, the Auburn Tigers had been unranked until the 8th week of the season when they debuted in the AP Poll at No. 24, riding a six-game win streak in their ascension to the No. 7 spot by the Georgia game. Observers speculated that the return of the Bulldogs' starting running back Todd Gurley from an ankle injury would bolster Georgia's chances of an upset.

The son of Wes and Myrtle, Dorsett grew up in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, northwest of Pittsburgh. He attended Hopewell High School, where he played football and basketball. As a high school sophomore in 1970, Dorsett started at cornerback, as his coaches did not believe the 147-pound Dorsett was big enough to play running back, the position he played in junior high school. In 1971, a competition between Dorsett and sophomore Michael Kimbrough for the starting running back position ended after Dorsett took a screen pass 75 yards for a touchdown against Ambridge during the season opener. Dorsett ended the year as an All-State selection after rushing for 1,034 yards and scoring 19 touchdowns, while leading the Vikings to a 9–1 season.
Harris began the 2011 season as the Lions' backup running back. Harris saw his role expand and he took over as the starting running back in mid-season, finishing with 853 total yards and eight touchdowns. In the playoffs, Harris was named the Canadian player of the week for his performance in the Lions' win over the Edmonton Eskimos in the West Division Final. A week later, Harris was named the Most Outstanding Canadian at the Grey Cup, scoring a touchdown and rushing for 65 yards over 10 carries in the Lions 34–23 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. On December 29, 2011, Harris and the Lions agreed to a two-year contract extension, with an option for year three.

After redshirting his first year at Oklahoma State in 2017, Hubbard played in 13 games in 2018 and had 740 rushing yards on 124 carries with seven touchdowns. He returned as Oklahoma State's starting running back in 2019 and had a stellar year rushing for 2,094 yards on 328 carries and 21 touchdowns. Despite speculation that he would declare for the 2020 NFL Draft after this season, Hubbard announced that he would return to school for his redshirt junior year. In June 2020, Hubbard threatened to boycott the football team and any affiliation with the university after a photo surfaced showing Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy wearing a T-shirt promoting the One America News Network, a conservative-leaning news channel.
James was heavily recruited by Miami, USC, Florida, South Florida, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. James chose to follow in the footsteps of his cousin, Edgerrin James and play for Miami, where he wore the same #5 jersey his cousin wore during his days at Miami. James, as a true freshman, played in the first game of the 2006 season against rival Florida State. Head coach Larry Coker named James the starting running back by the fourth game of the season. James responded by rushing for 148 yards on 18 carries, an 8.2 yards per carry average, and a touchdown in his first college start against Houston. The 148 yards were a school record for a freshman, topping Clinton Portis's old mark of 147 yards.
He was replaced for the season by backup Larry Johnson. During the following off-season, new head coach Herm Edwards promoted Johnson to the starting position. Holmes's spinal injury did not heal by the end of the 2006 pre-season, and he was placed on the Chiefs' Physically Unable to Perform list for the season. Larry Johnson took over full-time as the Chiefs' starting running back. Throughout the 2006 season, Holmes repeatedly said that he would like to return for at least two or three more seasons in the NFL, but that he would not force a comeback if it could be detrimental to his long term health. Following encouraging medical tests, Holmes reported to the Chiefs' training camp in July 2007.
Robinson signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent on April 27, 2020 shortly after the conclusion of the 2020 NFL Draft. Robinson made his NFL debut in Week 1 of the 2020 season against the Indianapolis Colts. He recorded 16 carries for 62 rushing yards and a reception in which he leapt over Colts safety Khari Willis for 28 receiving yards in the 27–20 victory. Robinson became the fourth undrafted rookie running back to start week one since 1970, and set the record for most rushing yards for an undrafted rookie in Week 1.
Jackson was humiliated and worked on his running skills and tried out again in the 9th Grade and soon became the starting running back. Jackson attended and played high school football at Mary Persons High School. He played college football at South Georgia College in 1958, under legendary Florida State University head coach Bobby Bowden and assistant coach Vince Gibson. In 1959, Bowden was offered the head football coaching job at Samford (then called Howard College) and Jackson was one of 15 players that followed Bowden to Birmingham, Alabama. From 1959 to 1962, Jackson was starter on all sides of the Howard football team and was one of the last of the 60 Minute Men (football players who played the entire 60 minutes of the football game).
Grant was traded to the Packers on September 1, 2007 in exchange for a future sixth- round draft pick, and he played as the third-string running back behind Brandon Jackson and DeShawn Wynn for the first six games of the season. After Wynn suffered a shoulder injury in week 8, Grant took over in the second quarter against the Denver Broncos and ran for 104 yards in a 19-13 overtime win. He scored his first rushing touchdown on November 11 in a 34-0 win against the Minnesota Vikings. With these performances, Grant became the starting running back for the last seven weeks of the season. For the season, he averaged 5.1 yards per rush, had five 100+ yard games and eight rushing touchdowns.
2007 would provide more adversity. In Johnson's first start since 2005, he broke his collarbone against Oregon State and starting running back Matt Asiata broke his leg as Utah got routed 24–7 by the Beavers. The following week, wide receiver Brent Casteel was lost for the season in an embarrassing 20–12 loss at home to Air Force. Utah looked as if it righted the ship the following week with a 44–6 rout of No. 9 UCLA, the highest-ranked team ever defeated by the Utes. But the following week represented the worst week of Whittingham's head coaching career—a 27–0 loss to perennial cellar-dweller UNLV that had many wondering if Whittingham could survive as a head coach at Utah.
Lynch with the Seahawks in 2014 On July 24, 2014, former Seahawks fullback and good friend Michael Robinson announced on NFL Network's Inside Training Camp, that Lynch would hold out of Training Camp while he waited for a restructured contract from the Seahawks. In the 2014 season opener, Lynch had 110 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in a 36–16 victory over the Green Bay Packers. During Week 3 against the Denver Broncos, he completed the first overtime drive by rushing for a touchdown, giving the Seahawks a 26–20 victory over Denver in a Super Bowl rematch.
Immediately after signing with the Tiger-Cats, Amerson played in the Labour Day Classic against Toronto, catching a touchdown pass and returning a punt for 24 yards. While the Tiger-Cats initially expected to use Amerson more in the rushing game than they had in the past, the team returned to using him as a receiving back by the end of September due to weaknesses in the offensive line. As the season progressed, Troy Davis emerged as the Tiger-Cats' starting running back and leading rusher while Amerson was used as a receiving back. After missing a game in early October due to bruised ribs, Amerson was effective as a receiver for the rest of the month, finishing with three touchdowns in the last two games of October.
On January 4, 2016, the Cleveland Browns fired head coach Mike Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer after the Browns finished with a 3–13 record in 2015. The second tear was not as severe as the first, but Williams again endured surgery and an intense period of rehab to get back on the field. He returned to game action during the 2009 preseason and was the Bucs' starting running back to open the regular season, becoming the first NFL player to return from patellar tendon tears in both knees. On December 27, Williams had his first 100-yard rushing game in two seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and finished with 823 yards, the second highest total of his NFL career.. Williams was narrowly edged for the AP 2009 Comeback Player of the Year Award by Tom Brady, finishing second with 15 votes. He rushed for 821 yards on 210 carries with a 3.9 average and four touchdowns.

The Chicago Bears drafted Forte in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft as the 44th overall selection, the sixth of 23 running backs taken that year. He was originally drafted to compete with Cedric Benson for the team's starting running back position. However, Benson was released from the Bears after legal complications, and Forte out-competed Adrian Peterson and second-year running back Garrett Wolfe and started all 16 games. In the regular season debut on September 7, 2008 against the Indianapolis Colts, he carried the ball 23 times for 123 yards (setting a franchise record for most debut rushing yards) and scored his first career touchdown on a 50-yard run en route to a 29–13 victory over the Colts. His efforts earned him Sunday Night Football’s “Horse Trailer Player of the Game” award.
Trailing 38–10 a few minutes into the third quarter, Indianapolis scored 35 second half points to overcome a 28-point deficit to win, 45–44, in the second biggest comeback victory in NFL postseason history, behind just the Buffalo Bills' 32-point deficit in their 41–38 comeback Wild Card game win against the Houston Oilers in 1992. For Kansas City, the loss extended their playoff win drought to 20 years. The game got off to a rough start for the Chiefs, as starting running back Jamaal Charles was knocked out of the game on the opening drive. But before this, he rushed three times for 18 yards as the team drove 84 yards in 14 plays. Quarterback Alex Smith added a 16-yard run, and converted the drive's only third down with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Bowe.
The 2008 Texas Longhorns football team entered the season with freshmen athletes at many positions, no definite starting running back and appeared to lack talent at key positions. The Longhorns were projected to post a 9–3 during the 2008 season, and were ranked Nos. 11 and 10 in the AP Poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll, respectively. Despite doubt surrounding the season, the Longhorns rallied to an 8–0 start, including a four game in-conference stretch against opponents ranked in the top 12 football teams in the country. During that stretch, the Texas Longhorns defeated BCS ranked No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 11 Missouri, and No. 7 Oklahoma State before losing to No. 7 Texas Tech on November 1, 2008. On January 5, 2009, Texas defeated No. 10 (according to final BCS rankings) Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl 24–21.
Tampa Bay was coming off a bye week and was a notoriously difficult team to run against. Peterson was limited to 85 yards on just 19 carries, as the Vikings struggled to produce offense. In Week 12, Peterson was benched the first two offensive series against the Jacksonville Jaguars for being late to a team meeting, although he did amass 80 rushing yards and a touchdown. At the end of Week 13, Peterson became the NFL league leader for rushing yards again with 1,311 yards. Following Week 16, Peterson had 1,657 yards which led the league, and it was announced on December 18, Peterson would be the starting running back for the NFC Pro Bowl team. In his final regular season game in 2008, Peterson ran for 103 yards 21 carries, including a 67-yard touchdown run.

San Francisco lost starting running back Tevin Coleman to injury for most of the game, but this proved to be a non-issue as Raheem Mostert ran wild over the Packers with a franchise record 220 rushing yards and four touchdowns, both the second highest totals in NFL postseason history. On the 49ers second possession of the game, Jimmy Garoppolo completed a pair of passes to Deebo Samuel for gains of 16 and 30 yards before Mostert stormed into the end zone on a 36-yard touchdown run. Green Bay was soon forced to punt, and Richie James returned it 26 yards to the San Francisco 49-yard line, setting up Robbie Gould's 54-yard field goal to give the team a 10–0 lead. In the second quarter, a sack by K'Waun Williams forced a fumble.

Whitehall High School has graduated three notable NFL players: Dan Koppen, a former starting offensive center for the New England Patriots, Matt Millen, a former defensive linebacker with three Super Bowl-winning teams, and Saquon Barkley, a running back who was taken 2nd overall in the 2018 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, to which he is their current starting running back, and winner of the 2018 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Millen's career as President and General Manager of the Detroit Lions has been a subject of criticism. Between them, Whitehall alumni have won six Super Bowls, with Koppen winning two with the Patriots and Millen winning two with the Oakland Raiders, one with the San Francisco 49ers and one with the Washington Redskins. Both players' Whitehall jerseys (Koppen's #77 and Millen's #83) have been permanently retired in honor of their football accomplishments.

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was a quarterback for the Omaha Beef and the Billings Outlaws in the National Indoor Football League (NIFL). Running back Fred Jackson rushed for over 1,000 yards as the starting running back for the 2009 Buffalo Bills, and his high quality play earned him a spot on USA Today's "All-Joe" Team. Jackson played the early part of his professional football career for the Sioux City Bandits (now of Champions Indoor Football) and Michael Lewis (wide receiver) played for the Louisiana Bayou Beast in 1999 and then with the New Orleans Saints. Probably the most notable player to come out of Arena football into the National Football League is Kurt Warner, MVP quarterback of the Super Bowl XXXIV champion (2000 game, 1999 season) St. Louis Rams, who had previously quarterbacked the former Iowa Barnstormers of the AFL.
After amassing 177 yards in a 42-17 loss to Arkansas, Williams was promoted to starting running back. (That record stood until Tre Mason had 46 carries and 304 yards against Missouri in the 2013 SEC Championship Game.) Williams was injured early in the bitter in-state rivalry game against the University of Alabama (also known as the Iron Bowl) with a broken collar bone and had to sit out the rest of the season. In his freshman season, Williams played in nine games and finished with 614 yards on 120 carries (5.1 avg.) and six touchdowns.
As part of the project team and the growth of the sport in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in 2010 the team made the effort to buy his first equipment, aiming at the participation of LBFA 2010, the first edition of the National Football League. Despite the difficulties and lack of support, the athletes of the team were able to purchase enough helmets and shoulder pads so they could on August 28 debut not only in the league but also host the first match of the Sport as it should be practiced. The adversary was at the time Barigüi Crocodiles, which would be in December, champion of "Southern Conference" of LBFA and vice Brazilian champion. Despite the 26-07 defeat by the team made history when, in the 2nd quarter of the starting Running Back Jamal, shirt 23, breached the lines of defense of Paraná team and scored the first touchdown in the history of American Football gaucho.
In 2005, Arrington had graduated and Lynch became the starting running back.Lynch wore jersey No. 24 his freshman year but switched to No. 10, his high school number. This switch placed him in sequence with his cousins Virdell Larkins, who wore No. 9, and Robert Jordan, who wore No. 11. Lynch and his cousins were teammates at Cal. Lynch started off the season strong with 24 carries for 147 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown in the 41–3 victory over Sacramento State. This, along with the emergence of Willis McGahee (a first round-pick and a gamble by the Bills due to the knee injury that McGahee suffered in his last college game) taking over the starting running back role from the injured Travis Henry, and emergence of Lee Evans to give the Bills a second deep threat, sparked the Bills to go 9–2 in their next eleven games. This string of victories allowed the Bills to be in the hunt for a final AFC wildcard playoff spot. Though they would lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the final game of the season, costing them a playoff berth and devastating the fans, the late season surge gave the team a positive direction to approach 2005. After the season, wanting to go in a younger direction and unhappy with Drew Bledsoe's overall performance, the Bills decided to hand the starting quarterback reins to J. P. Losman.
It was his 7th career postseason touchdown. In the AFC Championship Game against the Steelers, the Jets were down 24–10 in the fourth quarter when Tomlinson was unable to score a touchdown on a fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line. The Jets went on to lose 24–19. Tomlinson had nine carries for 16 yards. Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said after the season that he expected Tomlinson back for 2011 but "things could change." With Greene designated as the starting running back for 2011, Tomlinson began the season as a third-down back and caught six passes for 73 yards in the season opener. On September 25, 2011, against the Oakland Raiders Tomlinson caught an 18-yard touchdown pass for his 160th career touchdown, joining Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice as the only players to score 160 career touchdowns. On October 9, 2011, against the New England Patriots Tomlinson became the 6th player in NFL history to reach 18,000 yards from scrimmage.
The following season, he saw limited action as a reserve running back behind starters Lance Ball and Keon Lattimore. He also played on special teams as a kickoff returner, which was the coaching staff's attempt to get him on the field in some capacity because of his speed (4.31 seconds in the 40-yard dash and sub 10.5 seconds in the 100 meters) In 2008, Scott took over as Maryland's starting running back and spent much of the season as the leading rusher in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). He was eventually surpassed by Dwyer, although both players were named to the All-ACC first team at the season's end. Scott also became the 2008 Humanitarian Bowl most valuable player when he broke the University of Maryland bowl game rushing record, and he finished the season with 1,133 rushing yards, the seventh Terrapin player to surpass a thousand yards in a single season.
Hill started his second season as the Cincinnati Bengals' starting running back, ahead of Giovani Bernard on the depth chart. Hill started the Bengals' season opener against the Oakland Raiders and had 19 carries for 63 rushing yards and two touchdowns as the Bengals won by a score of 33–13. The following week, he was benched in favor of Giovanni Bernard after fumbling twice against the San Diego Chargers. He finished the game with only 10 carries for 39 rushing yards as Bernard ran for 123 yards, helping the Bengals win by a score of 24–10. On October 4, 2015, Hill had nine rushing attempts for 40 rushing yards and a career-high three touchdowns as the Bengals defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 36–21. In Week 6, Hill had 16 carries for 56 rushing yards and caught his first career touchdown reception on a 13-yard pass from quarterback Andy Dalton, as the Bengals defeated the Buffalo Bills.
A ticket for the AFC Championship Game between the Bengals and the Bills. The Bengals forced 3 interceptions, and allowed only 45 rushing yards and 136 passing yards, while their offense held the ball for 39:29. Bills starting running back Thurman Thomas was held to just 6 yards on 4 carries, while quarterback Jim Kelly completed only 14 of 30 passes for 161 yards and 1 touchdown, with 3 interceptions. Just like their previous game, the Bengals didn't get much of a performance from NFL MVP Boomer Esiason, who completed only 11 of 20 passes for 94 yards, with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. But once again, their running game was able to pick up the slack, gaining 175 yards on the ground, 102 yards and 2 touchdowns coming from fullback Ickey Woods. Cincinnati took a 7–0 lead in the first quarter after defensive back Eric Thomas' interception set up Woods' 1-yard touchdown.
The following day, Collins made his Baltimore Ravens' debut and had seven carries for 42 rushing yards and one fumble in the 24–10 victory over the Cleveland Browns. During a Week 8 matchup against the Miami Dolphins on Thursday Night Football, he rushed for a career high of 113-yards on 18 carries and also caught two passes for 30-yards in the Ravens' 40–0 victory. Although Danny Woodhead returned in Week 9, Collins remained the starting running back and maintained his carries. On November 19, 2017, Collins made his fifth consecutive start and rushed for 49 yards on 20 carries, while also scoring his first rushing touchdown of the season on a three-yard run in the fourth quarter of a 23–0 defeat over the Green Bay Packers.

As a senior, he rushed for 1,899 yards and 18 touchdowns and was a consensus first team FCS All-American and a first team All-Conference selection for the third straight season.
A day after being waived by the Colts, Forsett was re-signed to the practice squad of the Seattle Seahawks on October 9, 2008. Forsett was then signed from the practice squad on October 14, 2008 and became the return specialist. For the 2009 season, he was slated to compete with Julius Jones and Edgerrin James for touches in a crowded Seahawks backfield. After the release of Edgerrin James, Forsett became the teams No. 2 back which gave him an opportunity to get more touches and make a bigger on-the-field impact. On November 15, Julius Jones, the starting running back for the Seahawks, left a game against the Arizona Cardinals with a bruised lung. Forsett filled in for Jones, rushing for 123 yards and his first regular season touchdown. He started as the primary running back on November 22 game against the Minnesota Vikings, scoring his second touchdown on a 9-yard run. With the Seahawks' running game struggling, Forsett also caught 8 passes for 80 yards.
The Patriots began the offseason with several losses, losing left tackle Nate Solder and right tackle Cameron Fleming. They also lost team receiving yards leader Brandin Cooks, starting running back Dion Lewis, and Super Bowl XLIX hero Malcolm Butler. They added left tackle Trent Brown, Bengals running back Jeremy Hill, and wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson. The Patriots also drafted left tackle Isaiah Wynn and running back Sony Michel in the first round, as well as later picking up Josh Gordon following Week 3. In week 1 versus the Texans, Brady defied Father Time yet again. He picked apart the Houston defense, becoming the third quarterback in NFL history age 41 to throw a touchdown pass in Week 1. In week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts Brady became the third Quarterback to throw 500 touchdowns in his career, the first with one team. The Patriots continued to roll until a blowout at the Tennessee Titans (now coached by former Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel), and later back-to-back losses against the Dolphins and Steelers, both on the road.
Having been cut as the roster was trimmed to the 53-man limit on August 31, Reggie White, Jr., Jon Hilliman, C. J. Conrad, Josiah Tauaefa, Jake Carlock, Evan Brown, Freedom Akinmoladun and Chris Slayton were resigned to the practice squad alongside new signings Corn Elder and David Sills V. Farr and teammate Lem Barney recorded background vocals on Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On", released in January 1971. In July 1971, Farr signed a three-year contract with the Lions. He appeared in nine games in 1971, but only one as a starter, as he continued to be hampered by injuries and lost the starting running back job to Steve Owens (who rushed for over 1,000 yards in 1971) and Altie Taylor.
