Series creator Richard Hatem was sent a screenplay in early 2001 called "Miracles", written by Michael Petroni and owned by Spyglass Entertainment. Hatem assumed that he was being sent the script to re-write, and the script would then be made into a feature film. Spyglass Guest 1986, Manny Aston second from left A graduate of Macquarie University, Aston spent his early career with ATN Channel 7, on the production team for iconic Australian shows such as A Country Practice, Sons and Daughters, and Romper Room. This was followed by an eclectic range of activities including production work with government film unit, Health Media Productions, freelance camerawork, and two years as drummer for 80's pub-rock band, Spyglass Guest. Aston wrote his first full-length play, Déjà Vu in 1986, followed by a series of successful one-act plays: Three Blind Mice (performed at Sydney's Bay Street Theatre in 1988); Lady Lazarus (a short play based on the poetry of Sylvia Plath), and Take Five (performed in 1989 at the Festival of Human Values in Malaysia). Much like a dæmon, they accompany a person throughout their life, serving to gently alert the person when it is their time to go to the underworld. Deaths are described as human-like in appearance, yet unnaturally quiet and able to blend into the background with uncanny ease. However, as most people do not wish to see their death, deaths are courteous enough to hide from their humans.

Oaro is a settlement close to the Pacific Ocean Coast of north Canterbury, in the South Island of New Zealand. Oaro is within Kaikoura District on State Highway 1 and on the South Island Main Trunk railway, 20 kilometres south of Kaikoura. It lies on a small flood plain close to the mouth of the Oaro River, which reaches the ocean just to the north of Oaro. The headland of Piripaua (Spyglass Point) and the associated Haumuri Bluff are located just to the south of the settlement.

Percival lures Bakhtin to an alley, kills him and takes the wristwatch, from which he discovers who Satchel is. Mulefa are members of a fictional species of sapient beings who inhabit a parallel Earth in the novel The Amber Spyglass. "Mulefa" is plural, the singular is "zalif" (which is pronounced subtly differently for a male or a female). These elephant-like creatures evolved a distinct anatomy based on a diamond-framed skeleton without a spine: they have four legs, short horns, and a prehensile trunk that functionally takes the place of hands. Signing with the trunk is an integral part of Mulefa language.

Four of the courses in the coastal community of Pebble Beach, including Pebble Beach Golf Links, belong to the Pebble Beach Company, which also operates three hotels and a spa at the resort. The other courses are The Links at Spanish Bay, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, and Del Monte Golf Course. The PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions play annual events at Pebble Beach, AT&T; Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the First Tee Open. It has hosted six men's major championships: six U.S. Opens and a PGA Championship.

During Will's journey into the Land of the Dead in The Amber Spyglass, he is forced to separate from part of his soul. This turns out to be his dæmon, who had previously lived unseen inside him. As Will is still a child when this happens, his dæmon had not yet settled into one particular form. However, towards the end of the novel, his dæmon is touched (described as a very intimate and usually forbidden action) by Lyra and she settles as a large cat with lustrous and subtle-coloured fur.

After they find Roger, they strike a deal with the harpies: in exchange for allowing them to open a window so the dead can escape, the harpies will hear the stories of the dead, and may bar access to those who have not lived full lives or do not tell the truth. The witch dies shortly after. Lyra carries the swan back to the canal, after which a recovered Sebastian Makepeace takes her into his house and explains that Yelena wanted to kill Lyra and blame him for the murder: Yelena was once Sebastian's lover and their son died in the war that was waged in The Amber Spyglass. Yelena blamed Lyra for her son's death. Sebastian helps to get Lyra away unnoticed (the dead witch in the middle of the street caused some consternation) and she gets back to St Sophia's.

Legends Magazine held a party surrounding their 150th issue release on June 25, 2005 at Club Rare in New York City's Manhattan district. The party featured live music by Bitter Grace, Bunker Soldier, State of Being, Amber Spyglass and Christopher Eissing, all bands except Bitter Grace having come from different states. It also featured DJ CSB running the turntables in between music and handling the stage. Ticket sales for the event were dismally low and the magazine nearly folded after having to cover the bar guarantee that was agreed to with the club.

Will Parry is the bearer of the Subtle Knife and a point of view protagonist of The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. He is the son of John Parry, an explorer, and of Elaine Parry, a woman who suffers from mental health problems. Will does not remember his father, a former Royal Marine, who has not been heard of since he vanished on an expedition to the Arctic when Will was an infant. It is later revealed that John Parry has wandered into another world and is unable to find his way back.

With few exceptions, Dave Greenslade wrote the music first and Dave Lawson then added lyrics. The song "Catalan" was named in honor of a fondly remembered concert Greenslade had in the Catalonia region of Spain. The bulk of the album was recorded in Studio Three of Morgan Studios, already famed as the place where Yes recorded Tales from Topographic Oceans, while the vocals for "Time" were recorded at Sawmills Studios.

Life in Pictures was a post-hardcore and metalcore band from Prescott, Arizona that formed in 2000. The band released an EP titled Songs From the Sawmill in 2003 on Limekiln Records, and later a full-length record titled By the Sign of the Spyglass in 2005 on Clockwork Recordings. As of early 2006 the band has stated that they are inactive and the members are working on other projects. Guitarist Addison Matthew, bassist Pat Callaway, drummer Dustin Hanna and vocalist Hank Hampton are currently in Hour Of The Wolf.

Olympic Village is within a short walk of the False Creek Ferries and Aquabus ferry stop at Spyglass and Stamp's Landing. Both companies provide service to Granville Island, David Lam Park, Yaletown, Plaza of Nations and Science World, while False Creek Ferries provides service to Kitsilano and the West End. The station was within walking distance of Leg-In-Boot station on the Vancouver Downtown Historic Railway, a tram service that operated on weekends from 1998 to 2011, connecting Science World and Main Street–Science World station to Granville Island. The only services open to the public in Pebble Beach (gas stations, restrooms, restaurants) are at the Inn at Spanish Bay and at the Lodge at Pebble Beach; plenty of comfortable and scenic spots are available to picnic. To drive the section of the road within the Pebble Beach gated community, there is an entrance fee requirement of US$10.50 (as of April 1, 2019), except for travelers on bicycles. In the 1970s, much of the lots and streets west of Barton Skyway were re-platted into a subdivision named "Horseshoe Bend". In 1978, City Manager Dan Davidson asked the Austin City Council to authorize preliminary engineering to build a previously-proposed bridge over Barton Creek to connect Barton Skyway from Spyglass Drive to Barton Hills Drive. The city also planned to extend Barton Skyway west to Bee Caves Road, along with connecting various gaps east between Lightsey Road to Woodward Street. Residents of Barton Hills and Horseshoe Bend protested the bridge, concerned about increased traffic and damage to Barton Creek.

In 1861, Countess Angelina (Betty Grable), ruler of Bergamo in southeastern Europe, marries Mario (Cesar Romero), a baron she has known since childhood. When the castle is threatened by Hungarian hussars led by Colonel Teglash (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.) on their wedding night, Mario flees. At midnight, the paintings in the ancestral gallery come to life, and their subjects ask Francesca, Angelina's great-great-great-great-grandmother who looks exactly like Countess Angelina, to save the castle just as she did in the 16th century. Through a spyglass, Francesca observes Teglash leading the advancing army and finds herself attracted to him.

Poppy Hills Golf Course is the newest golf course in Pebble Beach, California after undergoing an extensive 13-month renovation that was completed in April 2014. The original Poppy Hills was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., and opened in 1986. Along with Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course, Poppy Hills co-hosted the PGA Tour's AT&T; Pebble Beach National Pro- Am from 1991 to 2009, replacing Cypress Point in the rotation. Poppy Hills will co-host the Champions Tour's Nature Valley First Tee Open with Pebble Beach for three years, beginning in September of 2014.

Caravan Pictures was founded by Birnbaum and Joe Roth as a production company at Disney in 1992 to fill the Disney Studios' then-yearly 50 to 60 production and distribution slots. Birnbaum previously left Caravan at the prompting of then Disney studio chief Joe Roth as Disney was cutting its yearly production output and shutting down Caravan. It is revealed in The Amber Spyglass that certain trained people, particularly witches and human shamans, have achieved the ability to survive separation from their dæmons by undergoing an initial voluntary separation done at a special location. For the witches this is at a canyon underneath the earth in Lyra's world. Shamans endure gruelling ordeals that involve leaving their dæmon as they embark on a spiritual quest, crossing an area of death where nothing may grow or live. After rejoining their dæmon they gain the ability to separate from them to a far greater extent than previously.

When the Oblation Board starts kidnapping children, he leads 170 of his men to save them. He is wounded in an ambush but carries out his mission successfully, retrieving the children Lyra helped rescue, and taking them back to England. Faa re-appears briefly at the conclusion of The Amber Spyglass when he and other Gyptians are briefly drawn into the world of the Mulefa to bring Lyra home before the worlds separate once again. In the film The Golden Compass, Faa is played by Jim Carter while Michael Gough voices him in the video game adaption.

Dr. Mary Malone is a physicist from Will's world investigating dark matter, which is equated with Dust, and is a point of view protagonist in The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. She is a former nun, and in the witches' prophecy involving Lyra, she plays the part of the serpent to Lyra's Eve. In The Subtle Knife, Lyra meets her and tells her about her world's research into Dust, which Mary equates with dark matter and refers to as Shadows. Lyra demonstrates the use of her alethiometer, and Mary is able to program her dark matter detector to function similarly.

Grumman finds the bearer, Will, on top of a mountain and fights with him after Will attacks him in the darkness. Grumman uses some bloodmoss (a lichen used to stop bleeding) to heal Will's wound, and informs him of the role of the bearer of the knife. Immediately after the light allows him and Will to see each other's faces and realise their relation, he is killed by an arrow shot by Juta Kamainen. In The Amber Spyglass, after their deaths, he and Lee Scoresby, are amongst those set free by Lyra and Will from the world of the Dead.

Mulefa are also able to see Dust directly without the aid of an instrument such as the amber spyglass.

At the end of the trilogy, as Lyra is entering adulthood, Pantalaimon finds his final form when Will Parry touches him: and is later described as being a beautiful pine marten, red-gold in colour with a "patch of cream-white fur"The Secret Commonwealth, chapter 1. on his throat. Pantalaimon is portrayed as a cautious and level-headed counterpoint to Lyra's impulsive, inquisitive, and sometimes reckless character. Lyra must separate from Pantalaimon when she enters the Land of the Dead in The Amber Spyglass, causing extreme pain to both of them; Pantalaimon avoids Lyra for a while afterwards.

Immediately, Morse banned needless land clearing and speculating on this forest land and set aside greenbelts to be reserved for the preservation of wildlife, prioritizing preservation of the forest, coastline and oceanfront. He set aside land for a golf course set beautifully, and now famously, along the coast, moving the planned home lots to the forest overlooking the golf course. Morse developed and rebuilt the land and properties of the Del Monte Forest into the Del Monte Hotel and the Lodge at Pebble Beach among other buildings. Morse can be credited with building eight golf courses including Spyglass Hill, Cypress Point, Pebble Beach and the Monterey Peninsula Country Club.

Dr Malcolm Polstead, a professor of history at the university, is at Durham College. She is not aware of his role in her life 20 years earlier when he cared for her during the events of La Belle Sauvage. Lyra has come to admire the works of prominent philosophers, currently gaining popularity throughout Europe, who assert that rationality is the only proper way to understand the universe, and further that dæmons are a shared delusion of humans without real substance.

St. Augustine's Church in Philadelphia was used as a filming location David Vogel, then-president of production of Walt Disney Studios, read Shyamalan's spec script and instantly loved it. Without obtaining corporate approval, Vogel bought the rights to the script, despite the high price of $3 million and the stipulation that Shyamalan could direct the film. Disney later dismissed Vogel from his position at the studio, with Vogel leaving the company shortly thereafter. Located about from downtown Washington D.C., the course is on Lake Manassas, an reservoir. As Cook turned his back to help launch the boats, he was struck on the head by the villagers and then stabbed to death as he fell on his face in the surf. He was first struck on the head with a club by a chief named Kalaimanokahoʻowaha or Kanaʻina (namesake of Charles Kana'ina) and then stabbed by one of the king's attendants, Nuaa. Ariel and Hook pay a visit to Gold's shop and talk to Belle, where Hook finds his spyglass and notices an Ursula clasp that belonged to Eric. After a hopeful Ariel hugs Hook, Belle then pours a locator spell onto Eric's cloak, which will help bring them closer to Eric.

One of Wheatstone's most ingenious devices was the 'Polar clock,' exhibited at the meeting of the British Association in 1848. It is based on the fact discovered by Sir David Brewster, that the light of the sky is polarised in a plane at an angle of ninety degrees from the position of the sun. Filby IV, who becomes infatuated with "Alma" when he catches sight of her through his spyglass. He promptly drops over to announce himself by way of a secret tunnel leading from his mansion to Al and Sal's cabin - their cabin used to be used to house women the former own was conducting illicit liaisons with him. The cheerful old man merrily introduces himself, making it quite obvious how attracted he is to "Alma" by both his words and his repeat fondling of Al's rump, oblivious to how this nearly gets him killed by the outraged hitman.

The play follows the same plot as the books – a story of the coming of age of two children, Will Parry and Lyra Belacqua, and their adventures as they wander through a series of parallel universes against a backdrop of epic events. During their quest, the pair encounter various fantasy creatures such as witches and armoured polar bears in a journey which they hope will take them to The Republic of Heaven. There are however some substantial differences, most notably the removal of the character Dr. Mary Malone, whose role in the story is turned over to the witch Serafina Pekala. Similarly the eponymous amber spyglass of the third novel, associated with Malone, is also largely absent.

The detector instructs her to go through the window into Cittàgazze, which she does, eventually arriving at the world of the Mulefa. There she builds the titular Amber Spyglass, allowing her to see Dust, and investigates the death of the trees that are essential to the Mulefa's environment. She discovers that the Dust is no longer falling from the sky to pollinate the trees, but is instead flowing sideways. When Lyra arrives, a conversation with Mary begins to inspire in her a sexual awakening, leading to her dæmon's shape settling and to her beginning to attract Dust; this action is enough to arrest the loss of Dust and to save the trees, and as such she fulfils the prophecy.

In 1947, Pebble Beach began its run as one of the host courses for the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am tournament, sometimes known as the "Clam Bake", and now the AT&T; Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The theatre's central foyer is plastered and painted in rose, white and gold, with columns of marble, large glass doors, and a roof consisting of stucco panels painted in white, rose and gold. This space accesses the lounges, bar, dressing rooms and the spectators' seating on the first floor, across a staircase of black marble and metal/wood handrails. The auditorium, is encircled by three balconies with wrought iron guardrails over columns of cast iron, under a majestic cupola whose spans are stuccoed and painted with geometric motifs, defined by spyglass windows that circle the perimeter. During his time with Renaissance, Farrell was spotted by Leo Sayer and recruited to fill the bass slot in the band Sayer was forming to tour the UK, Europe and the US. During the UK leg keyboardist Dave Greenslade left the band at short notice to work on Greenslade's new album Spyglass Guest, and Farrell switched to keyboards for the remainder of the tour, returning to the bass when the band toured the US. Mather Tower in 2016 333 North Michigan, 360 North Michigan, Mather Tower and 35 East Wacker Mather Tower (later Lincoln Tower, as designated on the Michigan–Wacker Historic District roster; now identified primarily by its address) is a Neo-Gothic, terra cotta-clad high-rise structure in Chicago, Illinois, United States. It is located at 75 East Wacker Drive in the downtown "loop" area, adjacent to the Chicago River. The -high building is sometimes called "The Inverted Spyglass" by Chicagoans due to its highly unusual design, an 18-story octagonal tower atop a more conventional 24-story rectangular "box." Briefly the tallest building in Chicago at the time of its completion in 1928, it remains the city's most slender high-rise structure at only at its base.

Pebble Beach owes much of its picturesque qualities to the granitic rock outcroppings, stacks and small islets visible along the coast, these comprising the local portion of the federal California Coastal National Monument, which is administered by the Department of Interior's Bureau of Land Management. These are characteristic of the Salinian Block, a geologic province which runs from the Baja California Peninsula and up through California west of the San Andreas Fault. The historically inactive Fanshell Beach Fault, which exits land near Fanshell Beach in Pebble Beach, creates a divide between nearby Cypress Point and northerly Spyglass Hill that is visually appreciable. Native Monterey Cypress forest grows on the south-westerly side of Fanshell Beach Fault: a direct relationship between the underlying rock base and soils and the cypress cover type has not been confirmed.

Memoirs of a Geisha is a 2005 American epic drama film based on the 1997 novel of the same name by Arthur Golden, produced by Steven Spielberg (through production companies Amblin Entertainment and Spyglass Entertainment) and Douglas Wick (through Red Wagon Entertainment). Directed by Rob Marshall, the film was released in the United States on December 9, 2005, by Columbia Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures, with the latter receiving studio credit only. The film tells the story of a young Japanese girl, Chiyo Sakamoto, who is sold by her impoverished family to a geisha house (okiya) in order to support them by training as and eventually becoming a geisha. The film centres around the sacrifices and hardship faced by pre-WW2 geisha, and the challenges posed by the war and a modernizing world to geisha society.

Harpies in His Dark Materials are portrayed as being similar in form to the harpies of myths and legends, having human heads on bird-like torsos including wings. In His Dark Materials, they are the guardians of the Land of the Dead, harassing the ghosts without mercy. They appear to hunger for information and knowledge in the form of stories, and appear to have the supernatural ability to know when they are being lied to and use their knowledge of this and other wrongful acts committed in life by their victims to torment them. When, in The Amber Spyglass, Lyra and Will open a portal from the Land of the Dead to allow the ghosts to escape, the Harpies are given the new task of guiding arriving ghosts to the portal.

Founded in 1937, entertainer Bing Crosby hosted the first National Pro-Am Golf Championship in southern California at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club in San Diego County, the event's location prior to World War II. Sam Snead won the first tournament, then just 18 holes, with a winner's share of $500. A second round was added in 1938 and was played through 1942. After the war, it resumed in 1947 as a 54-hole event, up the coast on golf courses near where it has been played ever since. Beginning that year, it was played at Pebble Beach Golf Links, Cypress Point Club, and Monterey Peninsula Country Club until 1966. The United States Navy Bureau of Ships contracted on several occasions for orders of hand held Stadimeters starting shortly after its development in the late 1890s. By the early 1900s it along with the sextant, spyglass, maneuvering board, parallel motion protractor and other navigation tools were part of the standard gear for the navigation officer aboard US warships. During World War II the Mark 5 version was developed to function more like a sextant with a single pivot arm replacing the linear screw worm drive which set the height of the object. The primary benefit of this development was that multiple objects of differing heights could be measured much faster since it removed the slow moving worm drive which would need to be adjusted for each object height before a sight was taken with a much faster adjustable arc arm to set the objects height.

At the beginning of The Amber Spyglass Lyra has been kidnapped by her mother, Mrs Coulter, an agent of the Magisterium who has learned of the prophecy identifying Lyra as the next Eve. A pair of angels, Balthamos and Baruch, tell Will that he must travel with them to give the Subtle Knife to Lyra's father, Lord Asriel, as a weapon against The Authority. Will ignores the angels; with the help of a local girl named Ama, the Bear King Iorek Byrnison, and Lord Asriel's Gallivespian spies, the Chevalier Tialys and the Lady Salmakia, he rescues Lyra from the cave where her mother has hidden her from the Magisterium, which has become determined to kill her before she yields to temptation and sin like the original Eve. Will, Lyra, Tialys and Salmakia journey to the Land of the Dead, temporarily parting with their dæmons to release the ghosts from their captivity.

After coming up with the music and title for the song, Dave Greenslade asked around for someone who could write lyrics that would suit the title and overall atmosphere, and the band's publishing company recommended Martin Hall. When Andrew McCulloch suggested the phrase "spyglass guest" from Hall's lyrics for the song be used as the album title, the rest of the band happily agreed, though Dave Greenslade admitted in a 2018 interview that he still has no idea what the phrase means. Feeling that they had proven the concept of two keyboardists and no guitars with their first two albums, the band decided to bring in guitarists when they felt the songs called for it. Clem Clempson was Greenslade's former bandmate in Colosseum, while Andy Roberts and violinist Graham Smith both came at the recommendation of Greenslade's wife, who worked as a secretary for Tony Stratton-Smith, founder of the Charisma Records label which Roberts and Smith had both recorded for.

Since its first release, Microsoft has added features and technologies such as basic table display (in version 1.5); XMLHttpRequest (in version 5), which adds creation of dynamic web pages; and Internationalized Domain Names (in version 7), which allow Web sites to have native-language addresses with non- Latin characters. The browser has also received scrutiny throughout its development for use of third-party technology (such as the source code of Spyglass Mosaic, used without royalty in early versions) and security and privacy vulnerabilities, and both the United States and the European Union have alleged that integration of Internet Explorer with Windows has been to the detriment of other browsers. The latest stable release has an interface allowing for use as both a desktop application, and as a Windows 8 application.

Typically dæmons and their humans are conscious or sleep at the same time. However, the dæmons of witches and shamans, as revealed in The Amber Spyglass, can remain awake while their humans sleep, and it is implied in Northern Lights that cedarwood can have a soporific effect on dæmons that allows them to sleep even if their humans are awake. "The worst breach of etiquette imaginable" is for a human to touch another person's dæmon; even in battle, most soldiers would never touch an enemy's dæmon, though there are exceptions (such as between lovers or in particularly violent fights). This was initially presented as a natural taboo that Lyra did not recall ever being told about, but in La Belle Sauvage, the infant Pantalaimon touches Malcolm Polstead's hand while in the form of a kitten, but in context this can be taken as the innocent action of a child seeking comfort from their 'guardian'.

Soon after, Meryl is suddenly struck ill with the Gray Death. Addie has trouble coming to terms with the fact that Meryl is going to die, while Meryl tries in vain to prove Addie's theory that the Gray Death might be cured if the person who is ill refuses to be sick, running when weak, staying awake when tired, etc. Since a prophecy from a long ago specter states that :The Gray Death will be cured :When cowards find courage :And rain falls over all Bamarre When King Lionel returns just as cowardly as before, Addie sets out to find the cure herself. Using a pair of seven-league boots and a magical spyglass from her deceased mother, a copy of Drualt, an invisibility cloak a magic tablecloth from Rhys, some of Milton's herbs and Meryl's sword, Addie successfully travels to the Mulee forest to find a specter, only to be tricked by one that took the form of Rhys.

She fulfils her destiny to "bring an end to death" by leading the ghosts out of the world of the dead. In the most recent edition of The Amber Spyglass released in the UK, the post-script "Lantern Slides" section shows Lyra studying the alethiometer (a rare truth-telling device) with Pantalaimon at age 18\.

Lippershey's application for a patent was mentioned at the end of a diplomatic report on an embassy to Holland from the Kingdom of Siam sent by the Siamese king Ekathotsarot: Ambassades du Roy de Siam envoyé à l'Excellence du Prince Maurice, arrivé à La Haye le 10 Septemb. 1608 (Embassy of the King of Siam sent to his Excellency Prince Maurice, arrived at The Hague on 10 September 1608). This report was issued in October 1608 and distributed across Europe, leading to experiments by other scientists, such as the Italian Paolo Sarpi, who received the report in November, and the English mathematician and astronomer Thomas Harriot, who used a six-powered telescope by the summer of 1609 to observe features on the moon. 19th-century painting depicting Galileo Galilei displaying his telescope to Leonardo Donato in 1609. The Italian polymath Galileo Galilei was in Venice in June 1609 and there heard of the "Dutch perspective glass", a military spyglass, by means of which distant objects appeared nearer and larger.
