Though Georgian, this 11th century icon of St. George shows the type of armour most often depicted as being worn by Byzantine heavy cavalrymen of the Komnenian period. Despite being superficially "Classical" in appearance the armour is in fact contemporary: a lamellar klivanion cuirass with tubular splint defences for the upper arms and the kremasmata, a splinted 'skirt,' to protect the hips and thighs; the boots are of a typical knee-length Byzantine type employed by cavalry. Many of the earlier guard units did not survive the reign of Alexios I; the scholai, Immortals (athanatoi), and exkoubitoi are not mentioned in the reigns of his immediate successors. The notable exceptions to this process being the Varangians and vestiaritai, and probably the archontopouloi.

The first Scottish effort, also referred to as a buskin, made use of a vaguely boot-shaped rawhide garment that was soaked with water, drawn over the foot and lower leg, and bound in place with cords. The contraption was slowly heated over a gentle fire, drastically contracting the rawhide and squeezing the foot until the bones were dislocated, though there would not have been sufficient pressure to actually crush the bones of the foot. A more progressive variant, found in both the British Isles and France, consisted of a trio of upright wooden boards that splinted around and between the feet, fundamentally identical to the Chinese foot torture known as kia quen, and were tied in place by cords. Wedges were hammered between the boards and the feet to dislocate and crush the bones.

He married Elisabeth von Honstein-Klettenberg (c1302-1380), daughter of Count Heinrich IV, on 9 September 1331. They had five children: Sophia von Schwarzburg-Blankenburg (c1331-aft1351); Agnes von Schwarzburg-Blankenburg (1330-1399); Elisabeth von Schwarzburg-Blankenburg (c1336-1380); Heinrich XIII de Schwarzburg-Bankenburg (c1338-1357), his childless heir; and Mechtild von Schwarzburg-Blankenburg (c1340-1370). Günther distinguished himself as a diplomat in the service of Emperor Louis IV on whose death in 1347 he was offered the throne after it had been refused by Edward III of England.
