Cody Speller (born May 10, 1994) is a professional Canadian football offensive lineman for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. Speller went undrafted but was picked up by the Bombers after playing in the 2016 CIS East-West Bowl, he played CIS football for the McMaster Marauders. Small Heath were elected to the Second Division of the Football League for its inaugural season in 1892. In October, in a match against Darwen, Speller broke his leg in collision with opponent William Campbell. The Birmingham Daily Post reported it thus: He was taken to the Queen's Hospital for treatment. The following April, Small Heath and Darwen played a benefit match for Speller; unfortunately for the beneficiary, the attendance was adversely affected by the Birmingham Charity Cup match between Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion on the same day.

The group originally consisted of Rachel Kramer, Bouchra Tjon Pon Fong, Anna Speller, Sita Vermeulen, Bart Voncken, Stefan de Roon and Martijn Terporten. Vermeulen left the group at the end of 2001. In 2003 the band was dissolved due to decreasing success.

One of the more notable stories from his experience is the congratulations posted by students on the marquee in front of his high school in which "champ" was misspelled (presumably as an ironic joke) as "chapm". Ted misspelled "distractible" in the second round, becoming the first of the eight spellers eliminated.

The second elimination challenge is called Letter By Letter, and in this challenge, spellers will be asked to spell out a word, letter by letter, one at a time. The words will keep coming until one of the spellers makes a mistake. The last speller standing earns their safety and will return to spell in the next episode. This is because gifted students sometimes do not think that they can relate to the students their own age, so they try and communicate with the teacher. Giftedness is frequently not evenly distributed throughout all intellectual spheres. One gifted student may excel in solving logic problems yet be a poor speller. Born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Bradley won the seat for the Haldimand—Norfolk electoral district in the 1979 federal election and was re-elected there in the 1980 and 1984 federal elections. Jane Hamilton grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, the youngest of five children. She won prizes for poetry and short stories throughout high school and college, but was always told that being a writer would not be a viable career. Because she was not a good speller, she did not believe she could be a copy editor or editor either. Hamilton graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1979 as an English major.

After a short appointment at Sydney Boys' High School, his "country service", he joined the staff of Fort Street, where he taught for 36 years. Many of those years were spent as modern languages master and he later became deputy principal. His teaching subjects were French, German and English. As a practical guide for students he compiled the Fort Street Speller, which is presented to all pupils upon their arrival at the school.

In Laser Letters, a new challenge for 2016, each team stand behind a buzzer podium facing the big screen. The pronouncer will read out four words that appear via a laser projection on the big screen, visible for a short amount of time. To keep the spellers on their toes, one word will be spelt incorrectly. Once a speller thinks they have identified the mistake they must buzz in and spell the word correctly.

Frederick John Speller (1863 – 17 August 1909) was an English professional footballer who played as a full back. He played for hometown club Great Marlow before signing for Small Heath. He made 93 appearances in the FA Cup, Football Alliance and the Football League for the club in its early days. His career was ended prematurely when he broke his leg in a match against Darwen in 1892, the season when Small Heath won the inaugural Second Division championship.

Harrington lived in various Iowa cities, including Farmington, Keosauqua, Burlington, Ft. Madison and Keokuk. She began her writing career with the Louisville Journal, whose editor opposed secession and was an important influence in keeping Kentucky in the Union. In her Letters from a Prairie Cottage, Harrington included a children's corner with tales about taming and raising animals and of a cat who adopted orphan chicks. Harrington also wrote other children’s books, including a primer and a speller.

Cobb's book, revised and reprinted, sold about 4 million copies into the 1850s and was the chief competitor of Webster's very successful spelling book from about 1825 to 1845. With the notoriety gained from his speller, Cobb moved to New York City in the 1820s, continued to produce a variety of school textbooks and became a leading opponent of corporal punishment in schools. He died impoverished in 1864 in Colesburg, Pennsylvania, and lies in an unmarked grave.

Barton was born in the Moseley district of Birmingham and played local football for Coles Farm Unity before joining Small Heath. Speller was born in Wooburn near Marlow, Buckinghamshire, and played football as an amateur for his hometown club, Great Marlow. He appeared in the semi-final of the 1881–82 FA Cup as Marlow suffered a heavy defeat to eventual winners Old Etonians – Bell's Life in Londons reporter thought the backs "hardly up to the mark" – and helped the club to victories in the 1885 and 1886 Berks and Bucks Challenge Cup. He was a regular selection in the Berks and Bucks Football Association representative eleven to play against other associations. Among his numerous appearances for that team, he featured in the annual fixture against the Sheffield Association in 1883, as one of four players described by the York Herald as "perhaps ... the pick of the Southerners", in 1885, where the Sheffield and Rotherham Independent noted that the crossing by the Sheffield wings "gave Field and Speller any amount of work, but they were equal to the occasion, and by ponderous kicking they relieved the pressure", and 1887.

In practice, many children are exposed to both "phonics" and "whole language" methods which are coupled with reading programs. Representing Warwickshire against the Manchester Association in February 1890, alongside Small Heath teammates Chris Charsley, Harry Morris, Caesar Jenkyns and Will Devey, Speller sprained an ankle during the second half. The injury kept him out for Small Heath's next two games. The Combination folded, and Small Heath became founder members of the Football Alliance in 1890. In his second game in that league, he was noted as "defend[ing] in fine style" as Small Heath lost 3–0 at home to Sunderland Albion.

Nevertheless, he retired at the end of the season. Before he broke his leg, he had not missed a game in League or FA Cup since the ankle injury some two-and-a-half years earlier. While a Small Heath player, Speller lived in Muntz Street, the street that marked one side of the club's ground in the Small Heath district of Birmingham. The 1891 Census recorded him sharing lodgings with teammate Fred Heath and employed as a gun maker.

The facility joined the National Health Service in 1948 and, after new buildings had been built on the old workhouse site, the old Victorian hospital was sold and rebuilt, albeit retaining the original clock tower and much of the exterior features, as a hotel (now known as the DoubleTree by Hilton Stratford-upon- Avon) in 1996. Lyman Cobb (1800 - 1864) was the leading competitor of Noah Webster as an author of spelling books. Cobb's speller, A Just Standard for Pronouncing the English Language, was originally published in 1821 when the author was a young teacher in upstate New York. The book, issued by Spencer & Stockton of Ithaca, New York, lifted heavily from The Columbian Spelling-Book published by Daniel Crandall in Cooperstown, New York, in 1819. However, it was Cobb's book, not Crandall's, that became a success.

Williams was part of a delegation sent to Britain during the debate on the Corn Laws, to represent Canadian agricultural interests. While in Parliament, he introduced a bill for the first copyright act in Canada. After the bill passed, two of the first grants of copyright were for a teacher in Port Hope who had written a music book and a speller. In 1850, Williams was elected the first mayor of Port Hope, a new office replacing the position of chief magistrate.

In May 2012, Scripps announced tentative plans for an international version, in which three-person teams from as many as sixty countries would compete. Although each speller would be able to confer with teammates once during each contest, all spellers would eventually compete and win prizes as individuals. If logistical and financial details can be reached, the event would be officially announced in early 2013 with the first competition to take place the following December. As of 2015, these plans are on hold.

The group first formed as the Bobby Boyd Congress in 1970, in homage to their original vocalist Bobby Boyd. In addition to Boyd, the band included guitarist Larry Jones, bassist Lafayette Hudson, keyboardist Frank Abel, horn players Ronnie James Buttacavoli and Arthur Young, drummer Ernest "Donny" Donable, and percussionists Keno Speller and Arthur Young. Jones was later replaced by Michael McEwan. Upon deciding that the funk scene in the United States was too saturated for them to viably compete, they relocated to France in 1971.

James Hector's Journal In Canada, he collected botanical specimens north of Lake Superior and areas around Lake Winnipeg, also journeying down the Saskatchewan River and venturing into the Rocky Mountains. Later expeditions included two trips to Asia Minor (the Lycia region and the Pontic Mountains), a journey to Spain and the Balearic Islands (1863), a scientific mission to Mexico (1865–66), and in 1870, a trip to the island of Rhodes. Bourgeau did not publish any botanical literature. He reportedly was a terrible speller and grammarian.

The 11th National Spelling Bee was held in Washington, D.C. at the National Museum on May 28, 1935.(20 May 1935). The 20 spellers had a banquet at the Hamilton Hotel on the evening of May 27 before proceeding to the National Museum the next day for the competition. The winner was Clara Mohler, 13, of Ohio, correctly spelling the word interning, which had been misspelled by the prior speller, followed by intelligible.

Environmental works to improve the open area between the civic centre and St Peter's Collegiate Church were carried out with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund between 1996 and 2004. A substantial programme of restoration works for the civic centre and its car park, to a design by Associated Architects, was carried out by Speller Metcalfe at a cost of £22 million and completed in 2018. The restoration work involved changes to the interior layout to create an open-plan environment: it also included creation of a new customer service centre on the ground floor.

In the United States, textbooks such as Noah Webster's Speller promulgated specific knowledge to be taught to people at specific ages. Chicago superintendent William Harvey Wells expanded this approach by creating a course of instruction for Chicago Public Schools, which he codified in "A Graded Course of Instruction for Public Schools". For the competition, each student took a written spelling test of one hundred words, and then spelled four words aloud on stage. The total number of spelling mistakes in both the written and verbal competitions determined the winning team. The Cleveland team won the competition with the fewest errors, followed by Pittsburgh in second place, New Orleans in third place, and Erie, Pennsylvania in fourth. Marie C. Bolden, a thirteen-year-old black girl, was the only Cleveland speller with no errors, so she was named the individual champion and received a gold medal.

In Western Australia, a spelling bee is held by the State Library Foundation of Western Australia, for children in school years 5, 6, 7 and 8. The early stages of the competition are held online, and the final spell-off in front of a live audience. In 2012 she was awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship to train at the University of York BioArCh Centre. The Große Aa is a , right, eastern tributary of the River Ems in western Lower Saxony (Germany). It begins in the Samtgemeinde Freren, near the quarter of Overwater, at the confluence of the Deeper Aa and Ahe rivers. From there is flows through Lünne westwards to Hesselte, where it is joined by the Speller Aa. From there on it runs parallel to the Dortmund–Ems Canal and discharges into the Ems south of Lingen, a few metres north of the mouth of the canal after the Gleesen locks.

In local competitions, they were eliminated by West Bromwich Albion in the second round of the Birmingham Senior Cup and by Wolverhampton Wanderers in the final of the Mayor of Birmingham's Charity Cup. Small Heath also played several friendly matches during the season. Small Heath used 23 different players in nationally organised competitive matches during the season and had eleven different goalscorers. Five players, full-back Fred Speller, half-backs Ted Devey and Billy Ollis, and forwards Jack Hallam and Fred Wheldon, were ever-present over the 29-match season.

Smith's public profile as a Romanov claimant was raised following her move to New York City in June 1963. She presented her manuscript to publishers Robert Speller & Sons, initially claiming that she was actually a friend of Grand Duchess Anastasia, who, before her death in 1918, had provided Smith with the notes on which the manuscript was based. Before proceeding any further, the Spellers contacted Gleb Botkin, son of the Tsar's physician and a childhood friend of the genuine Grand Duchess Anastasia. The first place prize is being raised from $40,000 (which it has been from 2016) to $50,000 this year. In the event of a tie, the two winners will split the first and second place ($25,000) awards ($37,500 each). All 8 winners received the full prize, $50,000, however. Webster thought that Americans should learn from American books, so he began writing the three volume compendium A Grammatical Institute of the English Language. The work consisted of a speller (published in 1783), a grammar (published in 1784), and a reader (published in 1785). His goal was to provide a uniquely American approach to training children. His most important improvement, he claimed, was to rescue "our native tongue" from "the clamourCiting this article, "at first he kept the u in words like colour or favour" so this quotation should have a 'U' in clamour of pedantry" that surrounded English grammar and pronunciation.

His first game for almost a year came in a visit to Ardwick, won 1–0 by Small Heath. According to the Post, "he played carefully at the start, but gained confidence as the game proceeded, and many times put a stop to extremely dangerous attacks by the clever right wing of the home team." Applejack schoolhouse, named for the crab apple and Black Jack oak trees that dwelled in the school's vicinity, was located approximately two miles from the present school. While only being a one-room schoolhouse, this school was still able to educate pupils on various topics such as second year Latin, the traditional "Blue back" speller, and even Christianity when it served as a Sunday school building for one year in 1890. Antioch school, founded between 1885 and 1890, stood about five miles southwest of the current Rosewood school. Oakland school, established circa 1890, was located approximately four miles west of the present school.

The Yeovil station name is given as "Yeovil (Hendford)". At this time the Taunton station consisted of two separate platforms, both on the south side of the line, one for Up trains and one for Down trains; Brunel more famously adopted a similar arrangement at Reading, Slough and Exeter. Speller says that because this seriously constrained capacity there, the Yeovil passenger trains ran from Yeovil to Durston only, with onward passengers changing trains there. The "arrangement continued until 1895, when the GWR provided some additional bay platforms allowing the Yeovil branch train to run into Taunton".

On 1 September 1939 Germany invaded Poland, initiating World War II. This put Luxembourg's Grand Ducal government in a delicate situation. On the one hand, the population's sympathies laid with the UK and France; on the other hand, due to the country's policy of neutrality since the Treaty of London in 1867, the government adopted a careful non-belligerent stance towards its neighbours. In accordance with the treaty's restrictions, the only military force Luxembourg maintained was its small Volunteer Corps under Captain Aloyse Jacoby, reinforced by the Grand Ducal Gendarmerie under Captain Maurice Stein. Together they formed the Corps des Gendarmes et Volontaires under Major-Commandant Émile Speller.

In 1975 Hugh Tosteson García of San Juan, Puerto Rico was the first winner from outside the mainland United States. In 1998, Jody-Anne Maxwell from Jamaica became the first speller from outside the US to win the Bee, as well as the first black winner. In recent decades the competition has been dominated by Indian-American students. Although people of South Asian origin make up less than one percent of the U.S. population, the vast majority of the winners since 1999, including all fourteen champions between 2008-2018 and seven of the eight co-champions in 2019, have come from the Indian-American community.

Zach's published works in the area of female composers include a CD titled Hidden Treasures: 300 Years of Organ Music by Women Composers which was released in 1998 and the textbook For the Birds: Women Composers Music History Speller, and her collections of music and documentation about women composers formed the base of the International Women Composers' Library, a music history library of which Dr. Zach is the current director.

Regional spelling bees usually cover many counties, with some covering an entire state, U.S. territory, or foreign country. Regional competitions' rules are not required to correspond exactly to those of the national competition; most notably, the national competition has since 2004 featured time controls that are designed to ensure its conformity to the programming schedule of its nationwide television broadcaster (see Regulations of oral rounds below) and that are not intended to be implemented at lower levels of competition.

The 26th Scripps National Spelling Bee was held in Washington, District of Columbia on May 21, 1953, sponsored by the E.W. Scripps Company. The winner was 13-year-old Elizabeth Hess of Arizona, correctly spelling the word soubrette.(22 May 1953). Lizzie Lost Her Concinnity But Soubrette Spells Victory, Milwaukee Sentinel (Associated Press) 11-year-old Raymond A. Sokolov of Detroit, Michigan placed second, falling on "spermaceti", after finishing 22nd the prior year. Third place went to 13-year-old David Hudson of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, who had placed sixth the prior year. There were 53 contestants this year, 37 girls and 16 boys. Four were returning spellers, and the youngest speller this year was 11.(21 May 1953).

This was the second year that spellers could qualify through the RSVBee program if their school is part of the National Spelling Bee Program and the speller has won a school or community bee, although he/she has not won a regional bee.Tyrrell, Joie (March 20, 2019). Wright was born in Abbot's Place, North Adelaide, the son of John Speller Wright (1812 – 8 February 1846) and his wife Martha Wright, née Darby (18 September 1810 – 6 August 1876), who arrived in South Australia in August 1839 aboard Somersetshire from London. Martha's brothers Thomas and John, John Darby's wife Mary and her sister Ann, and Ann's husband Joseph Peck were also on board. Wright's father, a tailor in Hindley Street, died when he was barely 12 months old. No information has come to light as to the upbringing of Wright and his sister Amelia Ann, around four years his senior. There was no notice in the newspapers of their mother's death in 1876.

To compete, contestants must memorize the spellings of words as written in dictionaries, and recite them accordingly. The concept is thought to have originated in the United States, and spelling bee events, along with variants, are now also held in some other countries around the world. Because most languages have a more predictable spelling system than English, spelling bees are common only in countries where English is spoken.

If test match goals are counted, all five first-choice forwards reached double figures for the second consecutive season. The leading scorer was Frank Mobley with 24 League goals, a total which also made him the top scorer in the Second Division, closely followed by Fred Wheldon with 22. Ted Devey, Tommy Hands, Billy Ollis and Wheldon were ever-present in the League, all but Devey for the second season running, and Caesar Jenkyns missed only the two games for which he was suspended. Fred Speller attempted a comeback, appearing twice for the first team early in the season, but the injury received against Darwen proved the end of his professional football career.

George Hollis's goalkeeping came in for praise as Small Heath began their season in a howling gale, despite Aston Villa beating their visitors 5–1 in a friendly match. The committee experimented with their team selection for the first Alliance match of the season, at home to Burton Swifts, Fred Speller moving up from full back to partner Jack Hallam on the right side of the forward line. Small Heath took an early lead through a combination of Frederick Wilkes and Hallam, but Burton, showing more skill than the home forwards, equalised in the first half. After the interval, Hallam scored after Wilkes' shot was parried, then Wilkes himself made the final score 3–1.

He was elected as the vice-chairman of the Union of Liberal Students for a year in 1981. He unsuccessfully contested the London Borough of Enfield seat of Enfield Southgate at the 1987 general election. He finished in second place some 18,345 votes behind the then Government Whip Michael Portillo. He was elected to the House of Commons for North Devon at the 1992 general election by defeating the Conservative MP Antony Speller who had ended the parliamentary career of former Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe in the same seat at the 1979 general election. Harvey won the seat with a majority of just 794, but remained the MP there until 2015. He made his maiden speech on 11 May 1992.

Arthur Ernest Jolliffe was born at 39 Cardigan Street in the Jericho area of Oxford on 23 January 1871, the youngest son of Henry Jolliffe and Anne Speller. His father, who was a house painter, died just after Arthur's fifth birthday, and his mother went out to service: in 1881 when she was aged 50 she was working for a lady at 11 Warnborough Road in north Oxford, and Arthur lived with her there. He was educated at the City of Oxford School and Balliol College, Oxford, gaining a First in Mathematics in 1891. He was a Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford from 1891 to 1920, and was also an assistant tutor at Jesus College, Oxford from 1903 to 1920.

The use of the Weymouth Wizard name was actually a revival of a title used by the Western Region of British Railways between 1981 and 1985 on a locomotive- hauled high summer midweek special. This generally ran on Tuesdays-Thursdays from to Weymouth via , and . A special, large, commemorative headboard was often carried by the locomotive heading the train, this had been produced by Swindon Works carriage shop and was designed by works sign-writer / illustrator Ernie Hewlett. At the time the - stretch of line was under threat of closure and the success of this train went some way to laying the foundations for the route to re-open under the terms of the 'Speller Act' with a limited, experimental passenger service commencing in May 1985.

Byassee argues that "African Americans have generated distinctly black forms of Christianity since they arrived on these [American] shores" and asserts that "the significance of these forms has been appreciated in mainline seminaries and churches for at least two generations." Speller has discussed the major interpretive frameworks into which black churches have been historically categorized by scholars, as well as several later ones. She does this to place Trinity within a broader understanding of the black church, and all Christian churches, and to trace Trinity's history of movement within several of the frameworks, while also discussing numerous of Trinity's ongoing struggles. Even before the competition, some members of the all-white New Orleans team took offense at competing on the same stage with racially integrated teams such as Cleveland's. After Marie Bolden and the Cleveland team won the competition, New Orleans school superintendent Warren Easton apologized to the people of New Orleans, promised that New Orleans students would not participate in any other contests in Northern states, and was censured by the New Orleans school board for allowing white students to compete against a black speller. Also in New Orleans, after Marie Bolden's victory, the local black YMCA organized a spelling bee to be held in her honor. However, under pressure from mayor Martin Behrman due to high tensions "over race questions", the event was canceled.

The writings in La Gaceta of Santa Fe were a critique of the Bishop's re-introduction of the system of tithing that Martínez since 1829 successfully advocated the government revoke. In 1826, he established a coed elementary school; in 1833 a seminary from which 16 men were ordained to the priesthood; and in 1846 a law school that graduated many of the earliest lawyers and politicians of the Territory of New Mexico. He produced a speller for the children of his family members, and later obtained the first printing press in New Mexico. In 1838, he published his autobiography on his press, and the following year published the first book printed in New Mexico, a bilingual ritual—Latin and Spanish.

Daniel Blumenthal (Belgium) is one of the pianists accompanying him on a regular basis. Among other pianists with whom he gave concerts in different countries are Elisabeth Ginsburg (Moscow, Russia), Irina Tsys, Konstantin Zenkin, Andrey Krouzhkov (Moscow, Russia), Marrit Gerets (Estonia), Luba Harutyunyan (Belgium), Luc De Vos (Belgium), Ruben Chakhmakhchyan (Armenia), and Joseph Ermin (Ukraine). He has founded the ″Mind Speller″ Chamber orchestra transformed from a String quartet, where, since its establishment in 2011, he has been acting as its conductor, soloist or the first violin at different concerts.

The competition began in 1925, and was initially organized by The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Kentucky, until the Scripps Howard Broadcasting Company (now the E. W. Scripps Company) assumed sponsorship in 1941. Every speller in the competition has previously participated in a local spelling bee, usually organized by a local newspaper. The first champion was Frank Neuhauser of Louisville, who beat eight other finalists to win the inaugural competition.

An alternative to analyzer-based imaging, which provides equivalent results without requiring the use of a crystal, was developed by Alessandro Olivo and co-workers at the Elettra synchrotron in Trieste, Italy. This method, called “edge- illumination”, operates a fine selection on the X-ray direction by using the physical edge of the detector pixels themselves, hence the name. Later on Olivo, in collaboration with Robert Speller at University College London, adapted the method for use with conventional X-ray sources, opening the way to translation into clinical and other applications. In a retrospective piece, historian A. J. Simmonds claims that the new railroad doomed the alphabet.

Barbara Simka Brownstein (played by Sophie Tamiko Oda) – A Japanese American, Jewish girl who dates Cody. She entered a science contest in "Rock Star in the House", in which her volcano was dormant and was set off by Cody's/Arwin's laser, entered a spelling bee in "Neither a Borrower Nor a Speller Bee", where she misspelled fracas and was eliminated, and worked on the school paper in the episode "Ask Zack". In the episode "Club Twin", she becomes addicted to sugar and kisses Cody, and later goes on a date with him in "Miniature Golf" and "A Tale of Two Houses". She also speaks Yiddish, but she is also into Japanese culture, her grandmother and some relatives are from Japan.

According to the Birmingham Daily Post, his defence was "very safe" as Small Heath comfortably defeated Hednesford Town in the FA Cup, but rather less secure when he obstructed his goalkeeper, allowing Horace Pike to score for Nottingham Forest. Small Heath went on to win an exciting game by five goals to four to inflict Forest's first home defeat of the 1890–91 Football Alliance season. The following season, Small Heath accepted £200 to switch the venue of their FA Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday to the Wednesday's ground at Olive Grove. In rough weather and against rough play – the Wednesday finished the game with nine men – the defence of Bayley, Speller and Jenkyns was singled out for praise by the Sheffield and Rotherham Independent, but they were unable to prevent a defeat.

Awards Coleman during the High School Musical: The Concert In 2006, Coleman rose to prominence in High School Musical, where she portrayed Taylor McKessie, the best friend of the new girl, Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens). Before then, she was a recurring guest star in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody episodes, "Forever Plaid", "Not So Suite 16", "Neither a Borrower Nor a Speller Bee" and "A Prom Story" along with Hudgens. Coleman has had seven other guest appearances on television including, Boston Public, Gilmore Girls, Malcolm in the Middle, Strong Medicine, 10-8: Officers on Duty, Married to the Kellys, and Veronica Mars. In 2016, the largest year for South Asian Spelling Bee nationals to date with 26 spellers, including most of the greatest of the time, Siyona Mishra of Orlando, Florida, who had previously placed 9th in Scripps, was the champion on "zubrowka". 2017 saw the first reduction in scope, to 8 regionals, and also experienced a drop-out epidemic, with many regional champions and runners-up not attending nationals; however, the strongest contenders came, and Sravanth Malla of Haverstraw, New York won on "chytridiales"; he finished 6th in the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee. 2018 reduced to 6 regionals, the current five plus Chicago, and added 12 wild-card participants as well, many of whom did extremely well. Sohum Sukhatankar of Dallas became the first speller ever to win the South Asian Spelling Bee in their first-ever appearance, taking the title with "dasyuridae".

The 67th Scripps National Spelling Bee was held at the Capital Hilton in Washington, D.C. on June 1–2, 1994, sponsored by the E.W. Scripps Company. The winner was 13-year-old Ned G. Andrews from Knoxville, Tennessee, who correctly spelled "antediluvian". Brian Kane Lee, a 12-year-old from Minot, North Dakota took second, falling with "parvenuism". Both were participating in the competition for the third straight year; Andrews' previous highest finish had been 14th.(3 June 1994). The half-backs were again the backbone of the team, and Wheldon, who produced "a brilliant exposition of dodging and shooting", scored the winning goal five minutes from time in what the Standard's reporter described as a "rattling good game". Fred Speller was reported to have "not been seen in such form since his leg was broken last year" in a Boxing Day friendly with top amateur club Marlow, the club from which he signed for Small Heath. Their last League match of 1893, a comfortable 6–0 victory against Lincoln City, took them into the new year in second place in the division, three points ahead of Notts County but two points behind Liverpool, who had played two fewer matches. Pumfrey strengthened the defence, George Hollis was as usual secure in goal, and the forwards, with the returning Mobley and the introduction of reserve-team player Walter Jackson, "showed better combination and greater dash than they have recently done".

In 1867 the Somerset and Dorset Railway (S&DR;) sought parliamentary powers to extend from their line at Shapwick to Bridgwater, then a significant port. To defeat this proposal in Parliament, the B&ER; undertook to lay mixed gauge on their main line from Highbridge (where the S&DR; and the B&ER; lines crossed) to Bridgwater to the quays there, and on to Durston and from Durston to Yeovil, and to work a service of standard-gauge trains on that route. The sum of £125,000 was spent on the track works and rolling stock for passengers and goods, and a daily standard-gauge goods train started running on the route from Yeovil to Bridgwater Docks in November 1867. Speller says that However the passenger service on the route did not start, and in response to a shareholder's question, it was statedAt the Half-Yearly Shareholders' Meeting, August 1868, quoted in MacDermot volume 2 that the L&SWR; had declined through working or other facilities.

The 38th Scripps National Spelling Bee was held in Washington, D.C. on June 9–10, 1965, sponsored by the E.W. Speller points out that Wright's arrival at Trinity coincided with the height of the U.S. Black Consciousness Revolution (also see South African Black Consciousness Movement) and additionally contends that Wright was keenly aware of the challenges that this deeply racialized context presented to Trinity. During graduate school Wright, as Bayassee notes, argued strenuously against radical black Islamic groups who had been drawing blacks away from Christianity by asserting that the religion was inherently racist and only for whites. To recontextualize the Christian message for the new context and time in which Wright perceived the church itself to be within, Wright, the author claims, anticipated that he would need to co-opt the positive elements of the Black Power message, while rejecting its philosophies of separation and black superiority--an idea around which a larger Christian theological movement had been forming, as evidenced by a full-page New York Times ad entitled "Black Power" run in November 1967 by the National Committee of Negro Churchmen, and Black Theology and Black Power published in 1969 by James H. He was reassigned to No. 48 Squadron RFC, flying the new two-seater Bristol F2b fighter, on 12 February 1917, and in March the squadron was sent to France. On 5 April Letts was appointed a flight commander with the rank of temporary captain, replacing William Leefe-Robinson, who had been shot down and captured. On the afternoon of 9 April Letts and his observer Lieutenant Harold George Collins, accompanied by an aircraft piloted by Captain Alan Wilkinson with 2nd Lieutenant Laurence W. Allen, engaged five aircraft from Jagdgeschwader 1 — Richthofen's "Flying Circus" — in a dogfight over Arras. They jointly claimed two aircraft shot down, even though Letts aircraft was "cut to ribbons", and Collins killed. Letts next victory came on 4 May, when he and observer 2nd Lieutenant L. Speller shared in the destruction of an Albatros D.III over Pelves with pilot 2nd Lieutenant H. Smithers and observer AM2 Valentine Reed. On 11 May, in a fight with aircraft from Jagdstaffel 11, Letts and Jameson, with Smithers and AM2 Rutherford, shared an Albatros D.III shot down over Biache-Dury, but Letts' aircraft was badly damaged, and two other British aircraft were also shot down.
