After Cameo's 7th album, Knights of the Sound Table (1981), Blackmon reduced the group from ten members to a five-member unit. This change was made due to the economics of the music industry at that time. Blackmon relocated the group from New York to Atlanta, Georgia. With their core of five members, they released the album Alligator Woman, a fusion of funk, new wave and a synthesizer-driven sound (compared to their previous albums which had more horn arrangements).

The lyre (, lýra) is a string instrument known for its use in Greek classical antiquity and later periods. The lyre is similar in appearance to a small harp but with distinct differences. In organology, lyre is defined as a "yoke lute", being a lute in which the strings are attached to a yoke that lies in the same plane as the sound-table and consists of two arms and a cross-bar. In Ancient Greece, recitations of lyric poetry were accompanied by lyre playing.

By the time Cameosis came out in 1980, it reached 25 on the Billboard 200 and was their greatest position yet. Cameo had gained considerable momentum in the charts through recent releases. Albums such as 1981's Knights of the Sound Table and 1982's Alligator Woman saw the band playing up their eclectic style. The latter album reached 23 compared to the former releases 44 which did not spawn a major single, whilst out performing Cameosis for highest charting album in the Billboard Hot 100 at that point.

Yoke lutes are defined as instruments with one or more strings, arranged parallel to the sound board and attached to a yoke lying on the same plane as the sound table, composed of two arms and a crosspiece. Most of the instruments of the lyre family are played by plucking the strings, but some involve the use of a bow instead. The sound box can be either bowl-shaped (321.21) or box-shaped (321.22). In the first case, the resonator is often a turtle shell, while the sound board is made of leather.

As Quatro Estações ao Vivo is the third live album by Brazilian rock band Legião Urbana, released in 2004. It is the fifth posthumous album by the band following vocalist, acoustic guitarist and keyboardist Renato Russo's death in 1996. It was recorded in São Paulo, at Palestra Itália Stadium on August 11 and 12, 1990, during their As Quatro Estações tour, except for "Se Fiquei Esperando Meu Amor Passar", recorded at the Mineirinho gymnasium in Belo Horizonte a couple of months before as part of the same tour. Both shows' audios were recorded straight from the sound table, something new and rare at the time.

The term also refers generally to any string instrument having the strings running in a plane parallel to the sound table (in the Hornbostel–Sachs system). The strings are attached to pegs or posts at the end of the neck, which have some type of turning mechanism to enable the player to tighten the tension on the string or loosen the tension before playing (which respectively raise or lower the pitch of a string), so that each string is tuned to a specific pitch (or note). The lute is plucked or strummed with one hand while the other hand "frets" (presses down) the strings on the neck's fingerboard. By pressing the strings on different places of the fingerboard, the player can shorten or lengthen the part of the string that is vibrating, thus producing higher or lower pitches (notes).
