Basically, Kelela is at the height of her powers and knows exactly how to use them – and if what we've heard so far is correct, Take Me Apart looks to be one of the most sonically fascinating records yet to come this year.
Bernie Worrell's 1978 debut solo album, "All the Woo in the World," was both a declaration of independence and a pledge of allegiance, building on the same sonically intrepid, unsinkably grooving style he had honed as the influential keyboardist in Parliament-Funkadelic.
Or at least that's how it was interpreted by composer Natalie Chami at this year's event this past Sunday when she performed a gorgeous sonically and emotionally complex original composition about a batch of chili she'd brought with her to the club.
My products aren't put through that machine, so they don't reach the same amount of people—and because of that I don't have the pressure to do that either, and I have the ability to indulge all of my own whims sonically.
Sonically the Aussie artist (born Martha Brown) has created another pop gem with synths that womp and wobble, a song imbued with longing and pop panache her vocals clean and layered ramping up to a climax where the fabric of our dimension quiver a little.
What Apple claims makes the speaker really stand out from the crowd of networked home assistant speakers is its sound quality: The device sonically assesses the room it's in, and adjusts the speakers so that the sound best fills each individual space that it occupies.
They were recently shortlisted for Canada's Polaris Prize (honoring the best of the best of the year) for their self-titled debut, and, at the gala last night, they skyrocketed into a new sphere of not only performance but what they can sonically achieve.
The New Jersey trio has played alongside such heavyweights as Godflesh and Isis; they recently released a new album via Profound Lore, and in doing so, made it clear to metal connoisseurs that hip-hop can be just as sonically devastating as any other genre.
It feels modern, but it kind of has this '70s vibe, and the song has that too, sonically, but there's something that's really interesting about this '70s theme and what's going on right now with women and what happened with the '70s women's movements.
But TUFFEST was the first time the self-proclaimed "transevangelist" headlined a festival in the US. It was past 9pm when she started weaving a fragmented tapestry of feral beats, live vocals and keys, and pop cultural references, all nightmarishly contorted and sonically rich.
Those albums — including its 23 debut, "21991 Feet High and Rising," a platinum record in the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry — are some of the genre's most influential and sonically adventurous, threading samples from obscure, kitschy records alongside recognizable pop, jazz and funk hooks.
In all of these cases, the indie spirit, which had seen itself as anti-traditional and sonically inventive, lived on in uncompromising artists, often on genuinely small labels — Bloodshot, Acony, Lost Highway — playing music with roots in the Appalachian brother bands of the 1920s.
The sax-driven track is a great example of everything that makes Vera special, his ability to make the sonically minimal sounds that are his signature feel just as big, and sometimes more engulfing than other producers do with more layers and more aggressive notes.
Sonically, the younger artist known as Ghetto—who learned, perfected and gained validation for his craft while in and out of prison—isn't the same as today's Ghetts, the man who stuck to his convictions and stayed true to grime as he knew it.
It's both startling and hilarious, until the end, when he adds a set of melancholy keyboard chords that bring out the melody hidden in Ol' Dirty Bastard's ululations, and the song suddenly turns mournful; sonically contextualized thus, ODB could almost be an opera singer.
Sonically, Ajibade's music blends elements of highlife, a genre native to West Africa, as well as dancehall and rap; his palette will likely expand because he aims to "push every boundary and erase any genre lines," as he told The Los Angeles Times last week.
This type of nebulous guitar shimmer sounds decidedly less weird now that sonically similar bands have filtered the aesthetic into psychedelia, dream pop, what have you, and music festival audiences across the world have heard hundreds of such bands booming and gushing from the stage.
But, this being one of England's great experimenters, instead of just of mere homages, he tore them into their component pieces and reconfigured them to highlight the creeping darkness at the heart of each—bringing all three compositions closer together sonically than anyone could've ever imagined.
In less than a decade, however, even Sabbath succumbed to the pomp and theatrics of its time, leaving the next generation of disillusioned Birmingham youth to crave new ways to sonically battle the capitalist politics and indifferent machinery that beat at the heart of their city.
Its take on black metal lifts a certain murky heaviness from doom (especially on the low end), and doses it with an eerie, chaotic vibe—not quite Deathspell Omega levels of suffocating weirdness, but sonically closer to their proclaimed influences in Craft and Aosoth (especially the latter).
Sonically disparate, but united by an authentic approach to personal and political punk, the likes of The Murder Capital and Just Mustard are building a new, more energized musical future for a country too often pinned as the home of U2, fiddles, and not much more.
Because "Parachutes" and records of that ilk—Coldplay's "Sky Full of Stars", Slaves' collaboration with Chase and Status, everything the Klaxons ever did—as ostensibly awful as they might be sonically, are actually a perfect means by which to (briefly) explore one of club culture's biggest problems.
Swift's Album of the Year acceptance speech was clearly aimed at Kanye West, who name-checked her in a pretty gross way on "Famous," one of the many tracks on his just-released The Life Of Pablo that combine the sonically sublime with the atrociously masculine.
"Bad Energy (Stay Far Away)" is mellower than anything else Skepta's put out this year—his last single "Pure Water" and his feature on A$AP Rocky's "Praise the Lord (Da Shine)" were sonically and lyrically forthright—and it's more celebratory than the title could've implied.
Bjork and Beyoncé share a few similarities: they are both calculatingly precise with their music and performance, having a literal hand wherever they can; their works are both raw and heartbreaking details of the female experience; and they both put on visually and sonically gripping live performances.
I think you're right, darkness is an essential aspect of what Tiger Army is, sonically and otherwise, but I was looking for a way to incorporate that into this album in a way that felt natural to me and was reflective of where I'm at now.
Bjork and Beyoncé share a few similarities: they are both calculatingly precise with their music and performance, having a literal hand wherever they can; their works are both raw and heartbreaking details of the female experience; and they both put on visually and sonically gripping live performances.
These parties—not coincidentally—also happen to be among the most sonically adventurous shows in the city too, the sorts of places where it makes sense to hear shattered dancehall, Eurodance remixes, rap hits, East coast club music, and harsh noise all in the span of one disorienting night.
Sonically, her compositions are laced with the occasional string and harp accompaniment, but there's a porch-side intimacy here—she shed the story-telling artifice A Ghost…, turning her gaze inwards, each chamber of her heart flayed, her lyrics questioning, adrift, but arriving at a place of peace.
Whether or not you trust the veracity of the memorial photo, there's no doubt that Richard D. James Album, with its toy-like sounds and lullaby-esque melodies, was exploring childhood nostalgia sonically—in the way, say, Michel Gondry has onscreen, in DIY fantasias like The Science of Sleep.
While on the road (Milosh and his band performed 476 times over the span of four years in New York, Montreal, Berlin, among other places), he would write songs, using the same equipment wherever he traveled so it would sonically still fit together and wouldn't be so piece-y.
Sonically, he remains loyal to his golden indie rock sound—polished studio wizardry, glossy guitars, sparkling riffs, and signature guitar jangles and arpeggios—at the heart of his last two solo albums, 2013's The Messenger and 2014's Playland, alongside Boomslang, his 2003 Johnny Marr + The Healers project.
Whether she's pledging allegiance to the world's most powerful computer or trying to make a song as "sonically uncool" as possible, her releases are so far-flung from one another and the general landscape of pop—like planets stretching deeper into space— that comparisons almost seem beyond the point.
The first single that the band released from the record, "Everything Now," seemed to set us up for an ABBA-esque, disco-heavy, anti-internet concept record with a party-through-the-apocalypse vibe; but "Creature Comfort," released Friday, had another angle entirely, sonically peppy, but lyrically devastating.
"Quicksand" is sonically more assertive than much of the St Louis-born artist's wonderfully hazy debut CTRL; the samples are still smooth and 70s-inspired, but there's brass in the background, and the drums trip between trap beats in the verse and straight funk acoustics in the chorus.
While it's sonically a soaring ballad — and shows off eldest member Jin's often underrated vocal stability — the lyrics reveal it to be one of Map of the Soul: Persona's darkest moments, as members Jin, Jungkook, and J-Hope describe reliving the same pains over and over and begging for a remedy.
It's the music inspired by that and the music that I want people in my life to listen to and feel sonically and be able to visit that and be like 'OK, Tunji's justified for his whole year for it being hard for me to reach him because of this project.
Essentially, records like Grateful and Funk Wav Bounces are great for streaming services, but they don't do much for listeners seeking a thematically or sonically rich record they can sink their teeth into, and they continue to put more power in the hands of the services rather than the artists.
So far, new music from Rostam has been sporadic (remember this extremely trippy, sonically kaleidoscopic treat from March last year?) but after an album was teased in late 2016, it seems that things might finally start to get moving, as today he dropped a new track, "Gwan," and accompanying video.
That's why Kendrick Lamar is one of the greatest rappers of all-time and probably the greatest rapper of this time: he has the musical savvy—sonically his albums are perfect—but he also has this unmatched lyricism, this ability to craft words the way the great authors of time have.
They are sonically pleasing in the way that I always enjoy Drake's music, but there is something that feels a bit hollow—like he's already proven himself and he's extremely happy with this career output, yet he feels like he needs to stay relevant so he's attempting to recapture something that once was.
Perhaps it's because of the nature of black metal in this day and age to take in more somber, dynamic aspects but it seems far more sonically cohesive than Christ Clad in White Phosphorus, which was intentionally something of an erratic collage of sounds  The two do have a lot in common.
Anohni's Hopelessness is a remarkable album not simply because it is one of the most openly political records this year (it features a song called "Obama" that does not paint the current president in a kind light, as well as the thematically related "Drone Bomb Me") but it is also deeply beautiful sonically.
"The Big Day" is Chance's fourth full-length release, and though he has made a point of referring to it as his debut album, it feels no more fleshed out than "Coloring Book," from 2016 (which won the best rap album Grammy), and is less sonically consistent than "Acid Rap," from 2013.
Sonically, the mix is an appetizer to the Hiperasia main dish, with Díaz-Reixaemploying a lot of the same sample experimentation that he explored on the new LP. The mixtape also coincides with the launch of Hiperasia apparel, which was formed in collaboration with the creative company Wellness, and includes wearable sweatshirts and wristbands.
Using a gamut of technologies, from suction cups with geo-tags to drones fitted with cameras, the researchers are able to monitor and track the movements of the animals, the nursing habits of female whales, their varying methods of communication sonically and physically, and the general health and condition of the southern right whale population.
Sonically speaking, Charli XCX has always gone where there's fun and rebellion to be had, but Number 1 Angel finds Charli collaborating with artists and producers in a manner so intimate it feels like they're passing the mic at a house show, finding fun and rebellion within a world she's created intentionally without compromise.
"Boxes is a vibrant, sonically forward-looking album that manages to retain what their legions of fans love about the Goo Goo Dolls – indelible melodies, intimate, heartfelt lyrics, and the anthemic, uplifting vibe of their songs – while pushing new boundaries in terms of sound and production," the band's label described the LP when it was announced.
Sonically, the song "4 AM" is one of the most interesting things 2 Chainz has ever made, but the true payoff is in empathizing with Chainz's pride in his own rise, from sitting "reminiscin' 'bout the trap, playin' the first Carter" to ending up "in a group with the best rapper that's alive," in Lil Wayne.
It was a lesson in curation: each show I attended—and indeed, each show at the festival—had its own personal stamp, but in bringing together acts for whom feeling has always come first, Robert Smith created a sonically diverse event which brought out the best in everyone who performed, by way of their associations with each other.
Produced by increasingly in-demand studio wizard Blake Mills (Fiona Apple, Alabama Shakes) and featuring a contribution from Santa Monica singer-songwriter Natalie Mering's Weyes Blood alias, the album is the most sonically wide-reaching Perfume Genius album yet, spanning sounds as disparate as skyscraping rock textures, slow-burn trip-hop, airy synth-pop, and Enya.
"Archie, Marry Me" became bigger than they had thought it could be and had co-signs by other prominent bands (Ben Gibbard's cover of the track, comes to mind, as well as Stars' cover at Riot Fest in 2014, to name a couple.) Antisocialites, out this week on Royal Mountain Records, is sonically very much in the band's wheelhouse.
This, obviously, presupposes a lot of insane hopes: that the craft will somehow be found, that the craft will somehow be intact, that the aliens who find it will be vaguely human, that these vaguely human aliens will absorb stimuli both visually and sonically and that these aliens will not still be listening to eight‑tracks.
Her contribution to BBC's sterling Essential Mix series this year is a victory both for Hauff and the Radio 1 program: on Hauff's end, it's the latest evidence of her mind-boggling talents at crafting sets that are as punishing as they are sonically divine, on one of the biggest platforms she's been afforded to date.
In their case though, Nicolas leans heavily on the jangly, borderline-out-of-tune guitar sound favoured by acts like Gus Dapperton in the US, and Rex Orange County in the UK. Like Clairo, Boy Pablo sonically look backwards – Nicolas got bang into 60s pop on YouTube while starting to write his own stuff – while pushing ahead too.
A giddy traipse through clean-as-a-whistle 80s pop, throbbing moonlit R&B, collagist IDM, and John Hughes-ian slow-dance anthems, I love it when you sleep... is the smartest, most sonically sensual record of the year to feature lyrics about leaving your brain in a Tesco's and having an American girl stare at your fucked up teeth for too long.
Secondly, though it's hardly surprising that the man who wrote "Closer" and essentially popularized the industrial genre isn't exactly bumping the top 40 during his commute, it does draw out some interesting ideas about the emotional similarities between the music that the two artists make, and how they can be expressed so sonically differently that one just doesn't 'get' the other.
Arriving September 29 via Wharf Cat, the nine-track LP marks the group's most sonically diverse effort to date (including Honey's first instrumental-only tracks), not to mention their most collectively-minded; Whereas Wise composed the majority of Love is Hard, New Moody Judy is a true group effort, beget from passionate jam seshes and a race against the clock.
Suspended from the ceiling, a sonically-controlled glowing light orb by artist Juan Azulay slowly escalated in visual intensity as, hidden from view behind a black curtain, Sigur Rós, utilizing a computer, a mixer and a mic, embarked on an original ambient score for the evening's ceremony that featured their distinctive blend of ethereal soundscapes and chanting in a made-up language, with the mix busked live.
But the lineup offers a couple of surprises at the margins, too: Regina Belle, a soul star of the 1980s and '90s who has turned to gospel over the last decade; and the youngest singer on the bill, the up-and-comer Casey J, whose appealing take on gospel is more sonically modest and internally complicated than the lions she joins on this tour. Released in September 1997, Dots and Loops was—and continues to be—a major milestone in the world of experimental pop, and within Stereolab's expansive discography (during the band's two decade long career, they released close to a dozen albums and a handful of EPs.) While the album is still a bit more complicated and dense, it is also one of the band's most sonically accessible albums.
King Princess, from Brooklyn, New York, came out swinging with her first single "1950," which had the feel of a private ~bedroom guitar pop~ confessional (and its video indulged in the fuzzy, home video style of the sub-genre, also recently touted by acts like Boy Pablo and, on the rockier side, Pip Blom and Soccer Mommy), though it was also tightly melodious and sonically lush.
A truly Midwestern rap anthem that sonically recalls the cybernetic paranoia of classic Detroit techno and the shuddering trippiness of footwork, Brown calls out regional luminaries like Traxman and DJ Assault while conjuring the image of dancefloor-as-war zone—a place where you duck and cover when danger's present, or because that's the only way to get your ass as close to the floor as humanly possible.
LEGEND Well I think we wanted music that still felt as if it works sonically with the action that's going on, and the action was so energetic and urgent and powerful in the way it's presented — visually it's so powerful — we wanted the music to be able to match that, and we thought it would enhance what you see on the screen if we were able to not just restrict the music to period music.
Given this context, it's not surprising that Louis's music is steeped in solemnity, whether he's nostalgic for an old relationship on "Too Young," or openly grieving the loss of his family on "Two of Us." Unfortunately, Walls feels like a confessional series of diary entries set to drums and tinny acoustic guitar, and while the frank intimacy is a refreshing contrast to, say, Liam, ultimately the album feels lackluster and sonically generic.
Still, Vancouver's emergent hip-hop scene is racially, sonically, and gender diverse, heralded by artists like Brevner and Tommy Genesis, who So Loki have played with on several occasions; collectives like Chapel Sound; bold artists like Horsepowar, who mines Bollywood samples; newbies like Scope and BBNO$; internet famous DJs like Rhi Blossom; and experimental electronic label 1080p, whose cassette runs inspired So Loki to release a physical copy of V as a vacuum sealed USB stick.
The Killers' catalogue is a winding path of sound: Hot Fuss brought electronic elements into the genre—pulling inspiration from Britpop and new wave; they then switched gears to Americana and Bruce Springsteen on Sam's Town; and went back to the 80s for safe, anthemic stadium U2 rock on Day & Age and Battle Born (my theory is that U2 as inspiration serves to cause more musical harm than good.) It's where they found their safest success and what is potentially the best direction sonically to satisfy.
