A giddy traipse through clean-as-a-whistle 80s pop, throbbing moonlit R&B, collagist IDM, and John Hughes-ian slow-dance anthems, I love it when you sleep... is the smartest, most sonically sensual record of the year to feature lyrics about leaving your brain in a Tesco's and having an American girl stare at your fucked up teeth for too long.

Secondly, though it's hardly surprising that the man who wrote "Closer" and essentially popularized the industrial genre isn't exactly bumping the top 40 during his commute, it does draw out some interesting ideas about the emotional similarities between the music that the two artists make, and how they can be expressed so sonically differently that one just doesn't 'get' the other.

Suspended from the ceiling, a sonically-controlled glowing light orb by artist Juan Azulay slowly escalated in visual intensity as, hidden from view behind a black curtain, Sigur Rós, utilizing a computer, a mixer and a mic, embarked on an original ambient score for the evening's ceremony that featured their distinctive blend of ethereal soundscapes and chanting in a made-up language, with the mix busked live.

But the lineup offers a couple of surprises at the margins, too: Regina Belle, a soul star of the 1980s and '90s who has turned to gospel over the last decade; and the youngest singer on the bill, the up-and-comer Casey J, whose appealing take on gospel is more sonically modest and internally complicated than the lions she joins on this tour. Released in September 1997, Dots and Loops was—and continues to be—a major milestone in the world of experimental pop, and within Stereolab's expansive discography (during the band's two decade long career, they released close to a dozen albums and a handful of EPs.) While the album is still a bit more complicated and dense, it is also one of the band's most sonically accessible albums.

King Princess, from Brooklyn, New York, came out swinging with her first single "1950," which had the feel of a private ~bedroom guitar pop~ confessional (and its video indulged in the fuzzy, home video style of the sub-genre, also recently touted by acts like Boy Pablo and, on the rockier side, Pip Blom and Soccer Mommy), though it was also tightly melodious and sonically lush.

A truly Midwestern rap anthem that sonically recalls the cybernetic paranoia of classic Detroit techno and the shuddering trippiness of footwork, Brown calls out regional luminaries like Traxman and DJ Assault while conjuring the image of dancefloor-as-war zone—a place where you duck and cover when danger's present, or because that's the only way to get your ass as close to the floor as humanly possible.

Given this context, it's not surprising that Louis's music is steeped in solemnity, whether he's nostalgic for an old relationship on "Too Young," or openly grieving the loss of his family on "Two of Us." Unfortunately, Walls feels like a confessional series of diary entries set to drums and tinny acoustic guitar, and while the frank intimacy is a refreshing contrast to, say, Liam, ultimately the album feels lackluster and sonically generic.

Still, Vancouver's emergent hip-hop scene is racially, sonically, and gender diverse, heralded by artists like Brevner and Tommy Genesis, who So Loki have played with on several occasions; collectives like Chapel Sound; bold artists like Horsepowar, who mines Bollywood samples; newbies like Scope and BBNO$; internet famous DJs like Rhi Blossom; and experimental electronic label 1080p, whose cassette runs inspired So Loki to release a physical copy of V as a vacuum sealed USB stick.

The Killers' catalogue is a winding path of sound: Hot Fuss brought electronic elements into the genre—pulling inspiration from Britpop and new wave; they then switched gears to Americana and Bruce Springsteen on Sam's Town; and went back to the 80s for safe, anthemic stadium U2 rock on Day & Age and Battle Born (my theory is that U2 as inspiration serves to cause more musical harm than good.) It's where they found their safest success and what is potentially the best direction sonically to satisfy.
