Some systems exist that automatically choose chords to accompany a vocal melody in real-time. A user with no musical experience can create a song with instrumental accompaniment just by singing into a microphone. An example is a Microsoft Research project called Songsmith, and which trains a Hidden Markov model using a music database and uses that model to select chords for new melodies.

Kim Ljung started his musical career as bass player and songsmith in the band Klisne Seigmenn in 1989. Wallichs Music City was located on the northwest corner of Sunset & Vine and operated from 1940 to 1978. Owner Glenn E. Wallichs, along with Tin Pan Alley songsmith Johnny Mercer and ex-Paramount movie producer Buddy De Sylva, had founded Capitol Records, starting in a small office on Vine Street in 1942 and then moving to larger offices above the store in 1946. After Capitol Records moved to the Capitol Tower in 1956, the offices became the home of Dot Records. In an era when most recorded music was sold through mom and pop stores, Wallichs Music City became the premier record store in Southern California and the world's largest specialty record store.

He also tours as part of the Highway Three Roots Revue, a songwriters tour with Juno- nominated roots artist John Wort Hannam and alt-rock songsmith Leeroy Stagger.

Feeling that this was unfair, Campion formed "Music Epicenter", with partner and mentor songsmith, Chris Falson in 2003. Campion shifted focus from song placement to finding a solution for an industry in rapid decline. Lack of stable distribution channels for new artists, inspired Campion, along with ME partner Chris Falson and James Langteaux to create "PeaPod Music", where he raised capital and filed a patent on this unique distribution and discovery process.

Swell Maps have been cited as an influence by bands including Dinosaur Jr., R.E.M., Nirvana and Pavement. Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth acknowledged the influence of the Swell Maps in 1981, writing "As soon as that Nikki Sudden guitar comes slicing slabbing and all out fuzzifying off that crackling vinyl groove you know you’re gonna rock. It’s the best of both whirls: fist-in-the-heart guitar burnin’ rock and ahead-of- its-time songsmith awareness ... The Swell Maps had a lot to do with my upbringing". Scott Kannberg of Pavement acknowledged "Swell Maps was a big influence on our early records ... they had these songs they fucked up somehow to make sound really dirty and low frequency, but they had these great songs underneath all this mess".

While Lindisfarne without them had become a harder rocking outfit, Jack the Lad retained much of the folksy spirit, warmth and good humour of the original group. Though his talents had previously been overshadowed by the more prolific songsmith Alan Hull, Clements, who had penned Lindisfarne's first hit single 'Meet me on the Corner', continued to write most of their material, which in the view of some fans and critics was the equal of anything Lindisfarne produced at around the same time. Lindisfarne's record label, Charisma Records, decided to keep the band under contract and the first line- up of Jack the Lad recorded one album for them, It's Jack the Lad which was released in 1974, and two singles, 'One More Dance' (1973), and 'Why Can't I Be Satisfied' (1974). (This album was released in the US by Elektra Records, which had been Lindisfarne's American label.) Neither charted, though they received positive reviews for their records and live performances which began to gain a reputation for outlandish entertainment.

Upon its release, The Red received positive reviews from critics for the group embracing their "quirky" side. Billboards Jeff Benjamin called The Red "an impressive, solid debut album" and stated that it "indicates big things for the act that needs to follow in the footsteps of their beloved female label mates Girls' Generation and f(x)." while Noisey stated that it's "perhaps the strongest top-to-bottom K-pop album to date," praising its "daredevil song forms, harmonies richer and smarter than anything on western dials in a quarter-century, and nonstop virtuoso songsmith hooks—without so much as a single English inflection out of place." A review from Seoulbeats stated that The Red did "live up" to the expectations of the group's earlier "Red" releases, while praising the potential of the group's vocal. In a mixed review from IZM, writer Kim Do-hyun commented that the album "should have been accompanied with more careful judgments", giving the album two and a half stars, though highlighting tracks like "Campfire", "Oh Boy", "Day 1" and "Cool World".

"Don't Go Out into the Rain (You're Going to Melt)" is a 1967 hit single by Herman's Hermits. The song was written by Brill Building songsmith Kenny Young who himself made the original recording of the song – as "Don't Go Out into the Rain (You're Gonna Melt)" – leading a session group credited as the Seagulls. This version broke in the Miami area in December 1966 and was consequently picked up for national release by Date Records failing to garner enough regional attention to reach the Billboard Hot 100. Herman's Hermits – who had scored a 1965 hit with Kenny Young's "Just a Little Bit Better" – recorded "Don't Go Out into the Rain (You're Going to Melt)" for single release in June 1967; the followup to the million-seller "There's a Kind of Hush", "Don't Go Out into the Rain..." just reached the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 with a No. 18 peak evidencing the eclipsing of the "British Invasion" acts with the shift in the American musical focus punctuated by the "Summer of Love".
