They have helped us to understand that there are billions of solar systems beyond our own, that moons of the outer solar system could harbor life beneath their icy surfaces, that monitoring our sun is critical to protecting our infrastructure and way of life, and that our planet is changing in unprecedented ways due to human activity.

People who install solar systems benefit from the reliability provided by the grid — they consume conventional power at night and at other times that the sun fails to shine — but because they pay only for their "net" power consumption, they get a free ride on the cost of the generation equipment and other capital that yield the reliability upon which they depend.

Models of planet formation suggest that interstellar objects such as A/2017 U1 are likely to be icy rocks known as comets, formed on the periphery of distant solar systems, rather than dry rocks, known as asteroids, dislodged from such systems' interiors, which are places where any comet-like volatiles will have been driven off by the heat of their parent stars.

And as a physicist at heart, I also can't resist the bigger picture: Here we are on our little planet, quibbling about the next election cycle, when we actually have the potential for life to flourish for billions of years here on Earth and throughout the cosmos, with hundreds of billions of solar systems and hundreds of billions of galaxies.

And by Jehovah, we might need to be controlled soon, since humans are getting smart enough to do some serious damage to the universe's real estate—see Stephen Hawking's warning that humans could theoretically destabilize the Higgs Boson, affecting the entire solar systems and even swallowing the universe whole (though he notes we would need a particle accelerator larger than Earth to do it).
