During cold season, it's healthy to have warm company, and at this new Tribeca bar there's much to be had—it's busy even on a Thursday night in a neighborhood that's usually dead by 9 P.M. With sumptuous wood grain, plush velvet seating, and the floor tiling of a dated, smoke-filled European café, the space radiates a nostalgic Art Deco luxury.

In his op-ed he writes, "…the party has come a long way from the days of candidates being selected in smoke-filled back rooms by party bosses…" I'm not so sure; those bosses may not smoke any more, but they still may end up picking the winner — and it could be Mike Bloomberg, based almost entirely on his ad campaign.

Thankfully, Governor Andrew Cuomo came along and installed wireless internet in all 279 underground subway stations, so when someone is stuck on an F train with no air-conditioning for over an hour, or is forced to evacuate through the rat- and smoke-filled tunnels after an A train derails, they can do what they've always wanted to: tweet their complaints directly at Cuomo.

While millennials and Zs have the fresh ideas and energy that are destined to extract decision-making from the smoke-filled rooms of the past and place it squarely in the sunlit arena of democracy and competing ideas, our generation owes them and their children our attention, support and the opportunity for them to perfect the skills that will help turn their dreams into the laws of our land.

Ridley Scott's 1982 film may now be viewed as a crucial, even epochal vision of 21st-century dystopia, but upon its release, Blade Runner was a financial letdown, not to mention a movie that generated far-from-warm feelings from its creators: Harrison Ford was famously miserable throughout the wet, smoke-filled, delay-riddled shoot—as was Scott, who had to face off with not only anxious financiers, but also irritated crew members.

Bud Glick, an American photographer, spent three years capturing life in New York's Chinatown, and his careful and respectful approach towards his subjects is evident from the range of spaces to which he was given access: smoke-filled back rooms in which men play mahjong next to stacks of imported beer, steamy garment factories, barber shops, kitchens and the neat living rooms of apartments, such as the one belonging to the elderly Chows.
