A portion of the final strategy details a number of UK skills training partnerships, either new or which are being expanded, from companies such as Google, HP, Cisco, IBM and BT. Google, for example, is pledging to launch a Summer of Skills program in coastal towns across the UK. And ahead of the strategy's official publication the government is briefing these partnerships to press as "four million opportunities for learning" being created to ensure "no one is left behind" by the digital divide.

When I look closer to my personal and professional interests and experiences, I would say problems such as the following are worth a look: in healthcare, biotech solutions to common issues that an aging population face; new inexpensive ways to conserve energy; bridging in an innovative inexpensive way the gaps in providing relevant skills training; better transportation and distribution solutions for people, as well as for goods and services; or ways to render massive amounts of information and data in a smart understandable, quick and accessible way.

Examples include cuts to job-training programs seen in rural strip mall storefronts where displaced workers can get new skills training; a 21% cut to the Department of Labor that enforces occupational and mine safety programs meant to protect coal miners; eliminating the LIHEAP program that subsidizes winter home heating costs for low-income Americans (many served are in Great Lakes states like Michigan and Wisconsin that voted Republican for the first time in a generation); and community grant programs that support services like "Meals on Wheels," which delivers hot meals to seniors who are poor or alone.
