A coin of this city has been published by (Sicula, pt. ii. tab. 20), but is of very uncertain authority. (Eckhel, vol. i. p.
Note: Grimaldi erronously dates the founding to 1175, not the correct 1275; and uses the spelling Sicula, not Sicola.Delle notizie del bello, dell'antico, e del curioso della citta di Napoli, Volume 6, by Canon Carlo Celano, Salvatore Palermo, San Biagio dei Librai, 1792, page 167-168. In 1722, putatively to the maleficent humors of the region, the orphanage was transferred to the Sanità district, where it mutated the name to Santa Maria Antesaecula.
In 1994 in Florence he founded the school of cinema Imagine, (La di Cinema Immagina) of which he is the artistic director and where he teaches acting, directing, screenplay and editing. In 1998 it realizes in quality of producer the mediometraggio in 35 mm. In 1997, he directed the short film Doppio Petto in Sicily. It was produced in association with Imagine and with the contribution of the Communes of Burgio and Villafranca Sicula.
Later, Aeronautica Sicula repaired many of the ICAF aircraft. Some modifications were adopted during production, such as the removal of the nose machine gun; it was replaced by an enclosed fairing. Some Z.501s were supplied to Romania and to the Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War. Following Italy's surrender in 1943, a few of these flying boats continued to operate with both the Axis Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana and the Allied Italian Co-Belligerent Air Force.
In 1578 Philip II of Spain tried vainly to obtain a formal confirmation of the right from Pope Pius V. In 1597 the King appointed a special permanent judge ("Judex Monarchiae Siculae") to give final decisions in the highest ecclesiastical causes, an appeal from his judgment to that of the Pope being forbidden. The Judex Monarchiae Siculae claimed the general right to visit convents, supreme jurisdiction over the Sicilian Bishops and the Clergy, and the exercise of a number of episcopal rights, such that Papal authority was almost wholly excluded. When Caesar Baronius, in an excursus on the year 1097 in the eleventh volume of his Annales Ecclesiastici (Rome, 1605), produced good reasons against the genuineness of the bull of Pope Urban II and especially against the legality of the monarchia Sicula, a violent feud arose, and the Court of Madrid, Spain forbid the eleventh volume from the whole of the Spanish Empire. Baronius omitted the excursus in the second edition of the "Annales" (Antwerp, 1608), but published instead a special Tractatus de Monarchia Sicula.
Sibilli began his career at hometown club FC Sant'Agnello before moving on to Siracusa. In his sole season with the club, Sibilli found the net five times in 29 appearances as the club secured promotion to Serie C, then known as Lega Pro. In August 2016, Sibilli signed a three-year contract with Catania. After just over half a season with Catania, Sibilli moved to Serie D club Sicula Leonzio, signing a short-term contract until the end of the 2016–17 season.
The second part of the town's name, "Sicura" is thought to be a derivation of "Sicula", with reference to an indigenous people living in the area in the first millennium BC. Surrounding the town are vestiges of Roman Empire and High Middle Ages epochs. Also present are temple ruins, ancient Roman graves, and a mysterious altar dedicated to an unknown deity. One monumental inscription is dedicated to the High Priestess "Numisia" and others speak of the presence of a thermal bathhouse.
The monarchia Sicula (Sicilian monarchy) was a historical but unduly inflated right exercised from the beginning of the sixteenth century by the secular authorities of Sicily (presently in Italy), according to which they claimed final jurisdiction in religious matters, independent of the Holy See. They premised this right on an old Papal privilege. The oldest document advanced in support of their claim was a Papal Bull of 5 July 1098 by Pope Urban II to Count Roger I of Sicily.Jaffé, Regista Rom. Pont., I, 2nd ed.
After a difficult start in season 2017–18, in which Leonzio had won only three out of 16 matches, on December 5, 2017, Rigoli was replaced by Aimo Diana as manager of the club. With Diana as a manager, Sicula Leonzio achieved a final tenth place, which meant participating in the promotion playoffs that the club, however, lost against Cosenza Calcio. For the new season, Leonzio appointed Paolo Bianco as a new manager starting in July 2018. However, Bianco resigned in December 2018, replaced by Vincenzo Torrente.
Giovanni Villani, in his Nuova Cronica, calls him "almost an imbecile" (Italianate Latin: quasi un mentacatto) and Nicola Speciale, in his Historia Sicula, calls him "pure and simple" (purus et simplex). Under Peter, the Neapolitans conquered the Lipari Islands and took the cities of Milazzo and Termini in Sicily itself. He died after a short illness on 8 August 1342 in Calascibetta and was buried in the cathedral of Palermo. He was succeeded by Louis, his eldest son, who was only four years old.
Lescano in the september 2016 go to Igea Virtus Barcellona P.G. in Group I of Serie D and in his first match find also first goal with new team against Sarnese. On 14 August 2018 Lescano joined Telstar in the Netherlands on a season-long loan from Parma, Telstar held a buyout option at the end of the term. On 12 January 2019, Lescano joined on loan to Potenza. On 2 August 2019, he returned to Sicula Leonzio on a permanent basis, signing a 2-year contract.
The Italian wall lizard or ruin lizard (Podarcis siculus from the Greek meaning 'agile' and 'feet') is a species of lizard in the family Lacertidae. P. siculus is native to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, France, Italy, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovenia and Switzerland, but has also been introduced to Spain, Turkey, the United States and Canada. P. siculus is the most abundant lizard species in southern Italy. P. siculus gained attention in 2008 following the publication of a research study that detailed distinct morphological and behavioral changes in a P. sicula population indicative of "rapid evolution".
New Phytologist 103 (1): 269–273 AbstractFlora of North America: History of North American Vegetation Species of Zelkova were important elements of the vast forests that prevailed throughout the Northern Hemisphere during much of the Cenozoic Period. Autumn foliage Today, the genus comprises six species with disjunct distribution patterns: three in eastern Asia [Zelkova serrata (Thunb.) Makino; Zelkova schneideriana Hand.-Mazz.; and Zelkova sinica C. K. Schneid.], one in southwestern Asia [Zelkova carpinifolia (Pall.) C. Koch] and two on the Mediterranean islands of Sicily (Zelkova sicula Di Pasq.
Zelkova abelicea is endemic to Crete (Greece); it has a fragmentary distribution in the four main mountain regions of Crete (Lefka Ori, Psiloritis, Dikti and Thrypti), between 900 and 1800 m above sea level, which corresponds to the upper timberline. It grows mainly on north-facing slopes or in and around rocky river-beds and gullies which remain moist during dry summers. The species is highly endangered through habitat fragmentation and destruction, overgrazing, fire and water stress. The Sicilian Zelkova Z. sicula, only discovered in 1991, is listed as an endangered species.
The species in this subfamily differ in a radical way from other species in the Ovulidae by the morphology of the first and second marginal teeth in their radula. While these are symmetrical (and even palmaceous) in the Ovulidae, they are asymmetrical, as can be seen in Pseudocypraea adamsonii Sowerby, 1832 (formed like a swatter) or in Jenneria pustulata and Pedicularia sicula (formed like a whip). Dolin L. & Ledon D. (2002). "Nouveaux taxons et discussion de la systématique des genres correspondents d’Ovulidae (Mollusca, Caenogastropoda) de l’Éocène inférieur de Gan, (France)".
Octopoteuthis is a genus of squid. It is one of two genera in the family Octopoteuthidae, the other being Taningia. Both Octopoteuthis and Taningia are characterized by their lack of tentacles for the majority of their life cycle, and have traits characteristic of both squids and octopods. The species limits of the genus are in need of further research, for example some authorities have stated that the Mediterranean species Octopoteuthis sicula is apparently the senior synonym of Octopoteuthis danae and that it is very closely related to, or possibly conspecific with, Octopoteuthis megaptera.
Pappalardo was born in Villafranca Sicula in Sicily. He was ordained as a priest in Rome on 12 April 1941, and was a Counsellor of the Vatican Secretariat of State from 1947 to 1965, receiving in 1951 the title of Privy Chamberlain to Pope John XXIII, and in 1961 that of Domestic Prelate. He was appointed titular archbishop of Miletus and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Indonesia on 7 December 1965. He was appointed President of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome on 7 May 1969. He was named Archbishop of Palermo on 17 October 1970.
The company, formed with mainly foreign capital by a banking group based in Rome, took the place of the previous companies that ran the island railway lines including the failed Vittorio Emanuele Company, which at the time of taking over had not yet completed the construction programme expected. In 1885 the Sicula Network covered a total of 597 km. The network was gradually integrated with the sections from Palermo to Catania and, in 1895, those between Messina and Fiumetorto of the Palermo - Messina line. At the end of 1896 it had reached 1,093 km.
On 27 July 2017, Padovan was loaned to Serie C side Casertana on a season-long loan deal. On 26 August he made his debut in Serie C for Casertana in a 2–1 away defeat against Catanazaro, in the 81st minute he was sent off with a double yellow card. On 23 September he played his first entire match for Casertana, a 1–0 home defeat against Akragas. On 18 November, Padovan scored his first goal for Casertana, as a substitute, in the 87th minute of a 1–1 away draw against Sicula Leonzio.
Chitinozoa may have been immature graptolites. The graptolites are colonial organic walled fossils which also occurred from the Ordovician to the Devonian; only part of their life cycle is known and it is not clear how they reproduced. It has been suggested that the Chitinozoa may represent the pre-sicula stages of graptolites - the period between the colony's sexual reproduction, and the formation of a new colony. This hypothesis appears to be supported by the co- occurrence of graptolite and chitinozoan fossils, whose abundances appear to mirror one another.
New orders were placed with the manufacturer Aeronautica Sicula. At the end of 1941, there were Z.501s in 15 of the 27 squadrons dedicated to naval reconnaissance. Strangely, the number of operational aircraft increased to an average of 100, rising six months later to 108 in 11 squadrons, probably due to the arrival of new aircraft. They were responsible, in collaboration with Italian ships, for the destruction of and damaged three other submarines. But their effectiveness was limited by their bombload of only four 50 kg (110 lb) or two 160 kg (352 lb) bombs.
Although the Italian language in the United States is much less used today than it has been previously, there are still several Italian-only media outlets, among which are the St. Louis newspaper Il Pensiero and the New Jersey daily paper America Oggi and ICN Radio. Il Progresso Italo Americano was edited by Carlo Barsotti (1850–1927). Arba Sicula (Sicilian Dawn) is a semiannual publication of the society of the same name, dedicated to preserving the Sicilian language. The magazine and a periodic newsletter offer prose, poetry and comment in Sicilian, with adjacent English translations.
Mafia boss Vito Cascio Ferro with his son and a hunting dog. Back in Sicily, Cascio Ferro rose to the position of a local notable. He was the capo elettore (ward heeler) of Domenico De Michele Ferrantelli, the mayor of Burgio and member of Parliament for the district of Bivona, as well as on good terms with the Baron Inglese. He exercised influence over several Mafia cosche (clans) in the towns of Bisacquino, Burgio, Campofiorito, Chiusa Sclafani, Contessa Entellina, Corleone, and Villafranca Sicula, as well as some districts in the city of Palermo.
A few phylogenetic and biogeographical studies have been carried out on Zelkova, but these studies had small sample sizes or weak representation of wild populations. A more comprehensive phylogeographical analysis, based on trnH–psbA, trnL and internal transcribed spacer regions 1 and 2 (ITS1 and ITS2), was the first to use a wide sampling of natural populations from nearly all the disjunct regions where Z. abelicea, Z. carpinifolia and Z. sicula presently grow. It aimed to assess the diversity within and among species using DNA from two cellular compartments that have different modes of inheritance and trace different histories.
The class was designed by the Sicula Network Research Office led by engineer Guglielmo Cappa as part of a renewal and unification programme to replace obsolete rolling stock inherited from the previous management. It was designated as a group F, according to the custom that was then to define with letters the group of locomotives according to their function, and numbered from 301 to 325. When they passed to FS, they were registered as Class 420. They had some technical differences from other FS 0-8-0 locomotives, notably the use of Walschaerts valve gear instead of Stephenson.
In 1885, the SFAI became part of Rete Mediterranea and in 1891 Bianchi was appointed head of the Maintenance and Works Department and, in 1900, Director of the Movement and Traffic Service. On 22 July 1901 he became General Manager of Rete Sicula where he remained until the establishment of the FS in 1905. With the coming of nationalization, Bianchi was appointed General Manager of the Ferrovie dello Stato by Giovanni Giolitti. Bianchi was respected as a man of great moral integrity and an enlightened and progressive manager, who paid great attention to technological innovation and efficiency.
In 1871 he was hired by the Società per le Strade Ferrate Meridionali and was engaged in the construction of the difficult line between L'Aquila and Sulmona. He later became Head of the Traction Division of the Società per le Strade Ferrate Calabro-Sicule. In 1885 when the Sicilian railroads were broken up with the establishment of Rete Sicula, headed by Riccardo Bianchi, Cappa became the director of the Material and Traction Service. He was one of the main promoters of the establishment of the ferry in the Strait of Messina that began at the end of 1899.
The abandonment of the "Apostolic Legation" in Sicily, for eight centuries an apple of discord between the Holy See and the Kingdom of SicilySentis, "La Monarchia Sicula", Freiburg im Br., 1864, and the endowment granted the pope, were truly but slight compensation for all that had been taken from him. Consequently neither Pius IX nor his successors ever touched the aforesaid annual endowment, preferring to depend on the offerings of the faithful throughout the Catholic world. It may be added that the endowment was not sufficient to meet the needs of the Church, nor with their multiplication could it be increased.
They also used it to extend their pretensions that, by virtue of an old Papal privilege, they possessed ecclesiastical authority in spiritual matters independent of the Pope. Despite doubts expressed concerning the authenticity of the document, Ferdinand declared on 22 January 1515: "As for the Kingdom of Sicily, where we exercise the supervision of spiritual as well as of secular affairs, we have made sure that we do so legitimately". In consequence of such an exorbitant claim, disputes arose between the Popes and the Sicilian monarchs. Pope Clement VII negotiated with Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor concerning the "monarchia Sicula" ("Sicilian monarchy"), but without success.
Maria a Sicola - Roman Catholic medieval chapel The chapel and adjacent monastery were commissioned in 1275 by the High Protonotary of King Charles I of Anjou, Pier Leone or Peronelle Sicola or Sicula. This nobleman also founded the adjacent church of San Nicola de' Caserti. This chapel was favored by the Angevin kings, and was also later endowed by King Ladislaus. The nunnery, called a conservatory for aristocratic women, housed an order that took care of orphans.Memorie Storiche della città di Napoli dal tempo della sua fondazione sino al presente, by Francesco Ceva Grimaldi, Stamperia e Calcografia Vico Freddo Pignasecca, Naples, 1857; page 113.
The first known record of the phrase is in the writings of Suetonius (here with apices for legibility): > ...quín [Claudius] et émissúrus Fúcinum lacum naumachiam ante commísit. Sed > cum próclámantibus naumachiáriís: "Have imperátor, moritúrí té salútant!" > respondisset: "Aut nón," neque post hanc vócem quasi veniá datá quisquam > dímicáre vellet, diú cúnctátus an omnés igní ferróque absúmeret, tandem é > séde suá prósiluit ac per ambitum lacús nón sine foedá vacillátióne > discurréns partim minandó partim adhortandó ad pugnam compulit. Hóc > spectáculó classis Sicula et Rhodia concurrérunt, duodénárum trirémium > singulae... The same incident is described in the writings of Cassius Dio, a Roman consul and historian who wrote in Greek.
Gaetano Cipolla has been the president of Arba Sicula (and editor of the journal and magazine) for the last 18 years. He was also a professor of languages at St. John's University, New York for many years, having recently retired. He has written books on Sicilian culture and language and has translated some of the most important Sicilian poetry into English, including the verses of the celebrated poets: Giovanni Meli and Nino Martoglio, along with the works of many modern poets and writers. While dedicated mainly to the Sicilian diaspora in North America, the organisation is also recognised amongst the various cultural and political institutions of Sicily itself.
Many species of lark live on the steppe, including the rare Dupont's lark (Chersophilus duponti) and there are also little bustards (Tetrax tetrax) and stone curlews (Burhinus oedicnemus). Sea birds include yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis), terns, razorbills (Alca torda), shags, the occasional puffin (Fratercula arctica) and Cory's (Calonectris diomedea) and Balearic shearwaters (Puffinus mauretanicus). The wealth of animal life provides prey for a number of raptors: ospreys (Pandion haliaetus), peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus), kestrels (Falco tinnunculus), and eagles. Approximately 15 species of reptile are found in the park, including Italian wall lizards (Podarcis sicula), ocellated lizards (Timon lepidus), grass snakes (Natrix natrix), and Lataste's viper (Vipera latastei).
On 17 September 2019 he signed with Serie C club Viterbese on a free-transfer. On 6 October he made his debut for the club as a 80th-minute substitute replacing Mario Pacilli in a 3–0 away defeat against Potenza. Two weeks later, on 19 October, Sibilia played his first match as a starter for Viterbese and he also scored his first goal in the 48th minute of a 6–1 home win over Rende, he was replaced by Mario Pacilli after 66 minutes. One more week later, on 27 October, he played his first entire match for the club, a 2–0 home win over Sicula Leonzio.
On 11 July 2018, Seminara joined another Serie C club Reggina for the entire 2018–19 season. Almost five months later, on 2 December, he made his Serie C debut for Reggina in a 3–2 home win over Rieti, he was replaced by Leonardo Mastrippolito in the 55th minute. One week later, on 9 December, Seminara played his first entire match for the club, a 2–1 away win over Sicula Leonzio. Seminara ended his season-long loan to Reggina with only 8 appearances, including 7 as a starter, however he played only one entire match and remaining an unused substitute for 17 other matches.
Ventral view of the viscera of Chtenopteryx sicula showing the position of the ink sac An ink sac is an anatomical feature that is found in many cephalopod mollusks used to produce the defensive cephalopod ink. With the exception of nocturnal and very deep water cephalopods, all Coleoidea (squid, octopus and cuttlefish) which dwell in light conditions have an ink sac, which can be used to expel a cloud of dark ink in order to confuse predators. The ink sac is a muscular bag which originated as an extension of the hind gut; it is a modified hypobranchial gland.Nair, J.R., D. Pillai, S.M. Joseph, P. Gomathi, P.V. Senan & P.M. Sherief (2011).
With the conventions of 1885, Rete Sicula took over the lines of Società per le Strade Ferrate Calabro-Sicule and had to face the problems of constructing new lines and introducing modern locomotives. The engineer Guglielmo Cappa designed the Class 400 steam locomotives which were re-registered as FS Class 910 on nationalization in 1905. The locomotive was designed to tackle steeply- graded lines, such as Messina - Palermo with its pass of the Peloritani Mountains and its long tunnel. It also had to be suitable for minor local or commuter services and to have the characteristic of bidirectionality, to gain time at terminal stations by avoiding the need for turntables.
Although Messina Centrale was inaugurated on 12 December 1866, it was not connected with the Port of Messina until 20 June 1889, when a long extension of the line from Palermo Centrale was opened to a new station, which was named Messina Marittima. The delay in making this connection was due to financial difficulties affecting the Società Vittorio Emanuele, which was taken over by the Società per le strade ferrate della Sicilia (better known as la Sicula) in 1885. Both stations were severely damaged in the Messina earthquake of 1908 and later reconstructed. A new station, incorporating both Messina Centrale and Messina Marittima, was built between 1937 and 1939 to replace the two old stations.
He was born in the ancient town of Licodia Eubea, near Catania, Sicily, in 1949, Caldiero immigrated to the United States at age nine and was raised in Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York. He attended Queens College in Flushing, New York, and was apprenticed to the sculptor Michael Lekakis and the poet-bard Ignazio Buttitta. Caldiero has traveled through Sicily, Sardinia, Turkey, and Greece collecting proverbs, tales, and folk instruments. He is co-founder of Arba Sicula, the society for the preservation of the Sicilian language and traditions, and is the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Utah Performing Arts Tour, and the Best Poetry Award from the Association for Mormon Letters.
The changes in foraging style may have contributed to a greater population density and decreased territorial behavior of the Mrčaru population. Another difference found between the two populations was the discovery, in the Mrčaru lizards, of cecal valves, which slow down food passage and provide fermenting chambers, allowing commensal microorganisms to convert cellulose to nutrients digestible by the lizards. Additionally, the researchers discovered that nematodes were common in the guts of Mrčaru lizards, but absent from Kopište P. sicula, which do not have cecal valves. The cecal valves, which occur in less than 1 percent of all known species of scaled reptiles, have been described as an "adaptive novelty, a brand new feature not present in the ancestral population and newly evolved in these lizards".
On 20 July 2017, Minelli was loaned to Serie C club Trapani on a season-long loan deal. Five weeks later, on 26 August, he made his Serie C debut for the club as a substitute replacing Manuel Marras in the 74th minute of a 1–0 home win over Siracusa and five more weeks later, on 30 September, he scored his first professional goal, as a substitute, in the 63rd minute of a 2–1 home win over Casertana. On 21 January 2018, Minelli was sent- off, as a substitute, a red card in the 93rd minute of a 1–0 away defeat against Sicula Leonzio. Minelli ended his season-long loan to Trapani with 17 appearances, including only 1 as a starter, and scoring 1 goal.
Despite this situation, in 1884 the Italian Parliament issued a commission study in which it was declared preferable a private administration of railways. The Convenzioni (concessions) between Italy and the three main remaining private companies were signed on April 23, 1884, for a period of 60 years. SFM was assigned the lines on the Adriatic Sea (Rete Adriatica, Italian for Adriatic Network), while the Società per le Strade Ferrate del Mediterraneo and the Società delle Ferrovia della Sicilia received, respectively, the Rete Mediterranea (Mediterranean Network, lines facing the Ligurian, Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas) and the Rete Sicula (Sicilian Network). The companies received in total 8,510 km of railways, under the vigilance of the Ministry of the Public Works, through a General Inspectorate for Railroads, which replaced the previous position of the General Royal Commissariate.
Benthic species of importance are Pilumnus inermis, previously considered to be exclusively Atlantic; Errina aspera (Hydrozoa), a famous endemic species of the Strait of Messina, on which lives a parasitic sea snail (Pedicularia sicula); found between 80 and 110 m. Other species are Ophiactis balli, the crustaceans Parthenope expansa and Portunus pelagicus and the giant barnacle, Pachylasma giganteum. Great biological and ecological importance is also ascribed to the already cited Laminariales of the Strait Sacchoryza polyschides and Laminaria ochroleuca, of Albunea carabus and to the conspicuous Pinna nobilis, the calcareous presence of red algae and immense prairies of Posidonia oceanica which covers wide areas and has a wide vertical distribution. Of extreme importance because they are found only in small areas elsewhere in the Mediterranean are Phyllariopsis brevipes, Phyllariopsis purpurascens, Desmarestia dresnayi, Desmarestia ligulata, Desmarestia ramose and Cryptopleura species.
Two weeks later, on 2 December, Elia scored his first professional goal in the 85th minute of a 2–0 home win over Bisceglie. On 14 April 2019, Elia scored his second goal in the 71st minute of a 3–2 away win over Sicula Leonzio. On 18 May he scored his third goal in the 78th minute in a 2–2 home draw against Virtus Entella in the Supercoppa di Serie C. Elia helped Juve Stabia to win the championship, the promotion in Serie B and he ended his loan with 32 appearances, 3 goals and 6 assists. On 11 July 2019, his loan was extended for another season. One month later, on 11 August, he played his first match of the season, a match lost 3–2 at penalties after a 1–1 home draw against Imolese in the second round of Coppa Italia.
Malespini and Boccaccio said she married at 50 and 55 respectively, and Brantôme argued that she married at 50 and gave birth at 52, while none was true. Florentine chroniclers said that Tancred annoyed the Pope so he and Archbishop of Palermo arranged the marriage of Constance to dethrone Tancred, and Tommaso Fazello said that according to decrees Celestine III absolved her from her vows, which contradicted the fact that Constance was betrothed during the reign of William II who would reign the next five years and Celestine was elected 7 years later; the chroniclers also said that it was wicked for the Pope to force Constance to give in her vows to marry, so Papal States was punished by the Heaven as the son born of the marriage of Constance would become its thorn. An anonymous Vatican said in his Historia Sicula that the reason Constance did not marry before 30 was that she was too ugly, which could not be taken seriously, as political marriages seldom considered the looks of the parties.
In general, external temperature does not influence endothermic animal behavior or circadian rhythm because of the ability of these animals to keep their internal body temperature constant through homeostatic thermoregulation; however, peripheral oscillators (see Circadian rhythm) in mammals are sensitive to temperature pulses and will experience resetting of the circadian clock phase and associated genetic expression, suggesting how peripheral circadian oscillators may be separate entities from one another despite having a master oscillator within the SCN. Furthermore, when individual neurons of the SCN from a mouse were treated with heat pulses, a similar resetting of oscillators was observed, but when an intact SCN was treated with the same heat pulse treatment the SCN was resistant to temperature change by exhibiting an unaltered circadian oscillating phase. In ectothermic animals, particularly the ruin lizard Podacris sicula, temperature has been shown to affect the circadian oscillators within the SCN. This reflects a potential evolutionary relationship among endothermic and ectothermic vertebrates, in how ectotherms rely on environmental temperature to affect their circadian rhythms and behavior and endotherms have an evolved SCN to essentially ignore external temperature and use photoreception as a means for entraining the circadian oscillators within their SCN.
At the same time, his statement on the "Return of the teaching of the Arabic language and literature to the University of Palermo" outlined a budget and an operational project aimed at encouraging participation by the younger generation. Through tireless research, Rizzitano shaped this project assuming the role of bridge between Italian and Arab cultures. In 1949 he participated in the first translation into Italian, for Einaudi, of the complete Arabic version of One Thousand and One Nights,Originally in 4 volumes, Rizzitano's is the fourth, of VII + 787 pp. – together with his fraternal friend Francesco Gabrieli, Antonio Cesaro, Virginia Vacca and Costantino Pansera and in that same 1944, he translated the novel Zaynab by Mohammed Hussein Heikal. In 1965 he published for the Institute for the Orient the masterpiece of Ṭāhā Ḥuseyn, al-Ayyām (‘The Days’) and between 1975 and 1977 he participated in the first world edition of the manuscript of the geographical work of al-Idrisi sponsored by the Università degli Studi di Napoli "L'Orientale" of Naples and by the Istituto italiano per il Medio ed Estremo Oriente of Rome and updated the Biblioteca arabo-sicula by Michele Amari, in view of the National Edition of the works of the great Sicilian scholar.
