Fish swimming in the river were identified as grayling, and it is said that the residents preferred the name "Grayling" to the name "Crawford," and renamed the area after the fish.

Edward Hartwick was born in St. Louis, Michigan on September 6, 1871 to Michael Shoat and Jane Augusta (Obear) Hartwick. Among his ancestors was a brother of John Christopher Hartwick, a Lutheran minister who emigrated to the United States from Germany in the early decades of the 18th century. Hartwick, New York, Hartwick Pines State Park, and Hartwick Seminary, now Hartwick College were named after him.

During her visit (later described in her book, The Immortal Adventure, published in 1928), Lindehim was able to attend the opening ceremony of Hebrew University and was introduced to Manya Shohat, who would later become a lifelong friend. Shoat helped Lindheim tour the country, taking her to the kibbutz she called home, K'far Giladi. After touring the Negev, Lindheim was newly energized for the Zionist cause.

The locomotives themselves have personalities and talk in a manner reminiscent of what in real life would be the manner of the men who operate them. Human beings appear in the story only as seen from the perspective of the engines. The story relates a sort of rite of passage. A fast goods train was derailed by hitting a shoat (young pig) which got on the track, and ended up in a farm field. .
