On August 5, 2005 AS-28, under the command of Lieutenant Vyacheslav Milashevskiy, became entangled with the aerial of a hydrophone array off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, in Berezovaya Bay, 70 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Kamchatka Oblast. The aerial, anchored by 60-tonne concrete blocks, snared the propeller of the submarine, and the submarine then sank to the seafloor at a depth of 190 m (600 ft). This was too deep for the ship's complement of seven to leave the submarine and swim to the surface. British rescuers and Russian officials stated that fishing nets also had entangled the vessel.

In 1705 the panel of merchants which had arbitrated in the case of the Ouzel Galley was formally established as a permanent arbitration body to deal with similar shipping disputes that might arise. Instructed by Baranov to leave "secret signs" (possession plates), Kuskov buried possession plaques at Trinidad Harbor, Bodega Head (or Tomales Point) and on the north shore of San Francisco Bay, indicating the company's intention to claim this section of northern California for Russia. Temporary buildings were erected to house the ship's complement of 190 crew (130 native Alaskan males, 20 native females, and 40 Russians)Adele Ogden, The California sea otter trade, 1784-1848, pg.58 The Kodiak remained in Bodega Bay until October, 1809, returning to Alaska with more than 2,000 otter pelts.

U-5 launched two torpedoes at the French cruiser, hitting with both. The ship was rocked by the explosions of the two torpedoes and went down in ten minutes, taking down with her the entire complement of officers, including Rear Admiral Victor Baptistin Sénès.Gibson and Prendergast, p. 69. Of the French ship's complement, 648 were killed in the attack; there were 137 survivors.Gardiner, p. 193. Léon Gambetta was the largest ship of any kind sunk by U-5. In June, U-5 helped search for the lost Austro-Hungarian seaplane L 41, and in July, received an upgrade of her deck gun to a QF gun. In early August, U-5 was sent out from Lissa when the Austro-Hungarian Navy received word from a reconnaissance aircraft that an Italian submarine had been sighted at Pelagosa.von Trapp, p. 41. On the morning of 5 August, the was on the surface, moored under a cliff in the island's harbor.

Rezkiy displaced standard and full load. Overall length was , with a beam of and a draught of . Power was provided by a combination of two M38K and two M62 gas turbines installed as a COGAG set named М7K, which enabled the ship to achieve a design speed of . Range was at , at , at and at . The ship's complement was 196, including 23 officers. The ship was designed for anti-submarine warfare around four URPK-4 Metel missiles (NATO reporting name SS-N-14 Silex), backed up by a pair of quadruple torpedoes and a pair of RBU-6000 Smerch-2 anti-submarine rocket launchers. The main armament was upgraded to URPK-5 Rastrub (SS-N-14B) from 1984, which provided a much increased anti-ship capacity. Defence against aircraft was provided by forty 4K33 OSA-M (SA-N-4 Gecko) surface to air missiles which were launched from four ZIF-122 launchers.

Operation Hannibal was the naval evacuation of German troops and civilians as the Red Army advanced. Wilhelm Gustloff's final voyage was to evacuate German refugees, military personnel, and technicians from Courland, East Prussia, and Danzig-West Prussia. A Memorial to the Wilhelm Gustloff The ship's complement and passenger lists cited 6,050 people on board, but these did not include many civilians who boarded the ship without being recorded in the official embarkation records. Heinz Schön, a German archivist and Gustloff survivor who extensively researched the sinking during the 1980s and 1990s, concluded that Wilhelm Gustloff was carrying a crew of 173 (naval armed forces auxiliaries), 918 officers, NCOs, and men of the 2 Unterseeboot-Lehrdivision, 373 female naval auxiliary helpers, 162 wounded soldiers, and 8,956 civilians, for a total of 10,582 passengers and crew.

The 647 tonne ships were long overall, in the beam, and had a draught of . They were powered by two Sulzer diesel engines, delivering to two shafts, which gave a top speed of . The 105 tonne fuel capacity gave them a maximum range of at . The ship's complement was 88 in peacetime, but 106 during the war. The ships were originally designed to be armed with twin Model 1933 /45 DP guns, one quadruple and two twin Hotchkiss 13.2 mm AA machine guns, and minesweeping gear. In fact the five ships completed before the outbreak of the war (Annamite, Chamois, Chevreuil, Gazelle and Surprise) were fitted with either a Model 1892 or a Model 1932 /45 gun or twin Model 1926 /50 guns, the machine guns as designed, two depth charge projectors and racks. The three vessels that survived the war (Annamite, Chevreuil, Gazelle) were rearmed in 1948 and received twin Model 1926 90 mm/50 guns, a single 40 mm/60 Mk.3 gun and six single 20 mm/70 Mk.2 guns, two depth charge projectors and racks. The ships that were completed about the same time (Bisson, Cdt Amyot d'Inville, Cdt de Pimodan) were fitted with twin /45 SK C/32 guns, but were otherwise the same.
