The distal band light orange, being bright above, very broad on the hindwing, proximally sharply defined and distally tinged with reddish yellow. On the underside the orange band of the forewing contrasts sharply with the black-brown basal area. The hindwing beneath with a broad white median band which is bordered with black proximally. The apical ocellus of the forewing centred with white on both sides.
Die Indo-Australien Tagfalter Grossschmetterlinge Erde 9 The wingspan is about 76–82 mm. The forewings of the males have an apical black area which is sharply defined and does not reach below vein 2, extending to the cell and to half or two-thirds of cellule 3. The submarginal spots are indistinctly marked. The hindwings have a broad blackish marginal border, its inner edge usually nebulous.
HD 202628 is a G-type star in the constellation Microscopium with an elliptical (e=0.18) dust disc, inclined at 64°. The inner edge of the ring, which lies at around 158 AU from the star, is sharply defined. This means that there is a likely planet responsible for this defined edge, and it has been calculated as orbiting between 86 and 158 AU from HD 202628.
EM radiation can have various frequencies. The bands of frequency present in a given EM signal may be sharply defined, as is seen in atomic spectra, or may be broad, as in blackbody radiation. In the particle picture, the energy carried by each photon is proportional to its frequency. In the wave picture, the energy of a monochromatic wave is proportional to its intensity.
In May 2012, the Cassini spacecraft obtained its first close-up photographs of Methone, revealing an egg-shaped moonlet with a remarkably smooth surface, with no visible craters. The moons Pallene and Aegaeon are thought to be similarly smooth. Methone has two different sharply defined albedo regions, one distinctly (~13%) darker centered on Methone's leading point. Its brighter area has an albedo of ~0.70.
When disturbed, it prefers to run rather than fly, but if necessary it flies a short distance on rounded wings. It is very similar to the chukar partridge, but is greyer on the back and has a white, not yellowish foreneck. The sharply defined gorget distinguishes this species from red-legged partridge. The song is a noisy ga-ga-ga-ga-chakera- chakera- chakera.
Buckeye rot lesions may cover half or more of the fruit and the margins of lesions will be smooth but not sharply defined. Finally, a white fungal-like growth may appear within the lesion. While fruit rot is the most common symptom, damping off and stem cankers are possible. The disease does not affect the foliage of the plant, which further helps separate it from late blight .
The genal spines are short or moderately long. Alokistocarids have a relatively large articulating middle part of the body (or thorax), consisting of 12 to 19 segments. The thorax axis is moderately convex and sharply defined, while the areas lateral of the axis (or pleurae) are nearly flat with distinct grooves. The tailshield (or pygidium) is small, with few segments, and lacks a border.
The rim is generally circular, with some terracing of the inner wall. The crater interior is rough and irregular, with a generally bowl-shaped appearance that lacks a sharply defined floor. There is no central peak at the midpoint of the interior, and no craterlets of note mark the surface. This crater lies within the Mendel-Rydberg Basin, a 630 km wide impact basin of Nectarian age.
The forewings are fuscous-black, with conspicuous, sharply defined, yellowish ochreous markings. There is a narrow fascia close to the base, a large round spot at the end of the cell, and a round costal spot on veins nine and ten. The hindwings are fuscous.Bull. ent. Res. 5 : 243 The larvae have been recorded feeding on the seeds of Thespesia danis, Dialium lacourtianum and Gossypium species.
The underside of the abdomen has two series of brown dots. The forewing upperside has a conspicuous strongly curved brown antemedian band, a discal spot, and a dark brown ring with a pale centre. There is also a large sharply defined quadrangular costal patch. The hindwing upperside is brownish-orange, the submarginal line brown, running continuous from the costa to the tornus but more weakly marked between veins.
The rim has been eroded to the point where it is not sharply defined, and both the edge and inner wall are rounded and relatively featureless. There is a small crater along the eastern rim. The interior floor is relatively featureless, except for the ejecta on the western edge. The west rim of the crater rises to a peak whose summit is over 6 km above the crater floor.
The forewings are golden ochreous yellow with a whitish-pink costal streak mixed with fuscous and with a narrow blackish median longitudinal streak from the base to the apex, the upper edge sharply defined, straight, indented before one-fourth, margined with a streak of white suffusion, the lower edge suffused with golden brown. The dorsal area is broadly suffused with pale pink sprinkled with fuscous. The hindwings are light grey.
During Suba's time in Budapest, he painted in a traditional central European style.Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Press Release, March 1964 However, Suba's adopted city impacted a major shift in painting style from countrysides and landscapes to industrial subject matter. The rendering of buildings with clean lines and exact detail caused him to be grouped with Precisionist artists. Suba's work depicts industrialization and modernization, rendered in precise, sharply defined geometrical forms.
Diagnostic traits of Chupkaornis include a finger-like projected tibiofibular crest of femur, deep, emarginated lateral excavation with a sharply defined edge of the ventral margin of the thoracic vertebrae, and the heterocoelous articular surface of the thoracic vertebrae.Tomonori Tanaka, Yoshitsugu Kobayashi, Ken'ichi Kurihara, Anthony R. Fiorillo and Manabu Kano. 2017. The Oldest Asian Hesperornithiform from the Upper Cretaceous of Japan, and the Phylogenetic Reassessment of Hesperornithiformes. Journal of Systematic Palaeontology.
The city also lacks the sharply defined neighborhood divisions and traditional souqs of older Moroccan cities. Very few non-natives live in Midelt. Of these, the longest established are a community of Franciscan nuns and Cistercian monks (namely Trappists) living at the Priory of Our Lady of Atlas in a nearby village. The nuns work with local women and girls to develop handcrafts and teach hygiene, French language, and other skills.
S. hippolyte Esp. (= alcyone F., agave Esp.) (43 b). Similar to the preceding [ S. autonoe ] in size and shape, but the distal band is on both wings broad, sharply defined and yellowish, being distally tinged with yellowish red. In the nymotypical form the hindwing beneath bears 3 distinct dentate lines, the ground-colour being often so darkened between the first two that there appears a dark median band.
Macroglossum dohertyi is a moth of the family Sphingidae. It is known from Queensland and Papua New Guinea. This species is distinguished from other Macroglossum species by the presence on the forewing upperside of two narrow, sharply defined, buffish-white bands in the place of the space between the median lines and the grey postdiscal line. The forewings are brown and the hindwings are dark yellow with a broad brown margin.
Manon walks forward and calmly dispatches all of the aliens. They also rescue a lion-like alien, Antac, who seems friendly. He communicates that he was on his way to a planet, but landed on the planet the same as them. Alex and Manon head to a nearby river to replenish their water and encounter a brief disturbance in the gravity field and a rainstorm, with a sharply defined boundary between.
The Cozumel thrasher is similar in appearance to the long-billed thrasher (26.5–29 cm in length), but is smaller, darker in color, has a blacker bill, and the markings are more sharply defined. No other thrasher species coexist on the island, but is most likely to be confused with the migratory wood thrush. The wood thrush differs in lacking wing bars, a shorter beak, and a different shape.
This 30–32 cm long snipe has a stocky body and relatively short legs for a wader. Its upperparts, head and neck are streaked and patterned with warm brown and buff, and the gold edges to the feathers form lines down its back, which are not as sharply defined as in most snipe species. The belly is white with brown barring. The horn-colored bill is long, straight and fairly robust.
This species occurs in two forms. In the darker, more-common form, the forewing is reddish brown with the maculation (spots) sharply defined by dark-red lines. The medial area is similar in color to the remainder of the forewing and the postmedial line touches, or almost touches, the reniform spot. Superficially this form is most similar to Hypotrix hueco and Xestia bolteri, both of which occur with H. alamosa.
217x217pxRanging from 18–20 cm in length with a wingspan of 32–34 cm, weighing approximately 37 grams, the masked woodswallow is similar in size to the white-browed woodswallow. Sexes differ markedly in colour and also in immature plumage. This difference between sexes is unique only to the masked woodswallow and white-browed woodswallow. Adult males have a sharply defined black face mask with a pale edge.
Erythematous candidiasis can mimic geographic tongue. Erythematous candidiasis usually has a diffuse border that helps distinguish it from erythroplakia, which normally has a sharply defined border. Special investigations to detect the presence of candida species include oral swabs, oral rinse or oral smears. Smears are collected by gentle scraping of the lesion with a spatula or tongue blade and the resulting debris directly applied to a glass slide.
Beta Lyrae systems are sometimes regarded as a subtype of the Algol variables; however, their light curves differ (the eclipses of Algol variables are much more sharply defined). On the other hand, beta Lyrae variables look somewhat like W Ursae Majoris variables; however, the latter are in general yet closer binaries (so-called contact binaries), and their component stars are mostly lighter than the beta Lyrae system components (about ).
Parts of the monastery complex: the bishop's palace (right), mortuary chapel (left), refectory (left, foreground), and tower (right, background). The bishop's palace is a two-storey building, standing a few metres southwest of the church of the Dormition. The windows on both floors have sharply defined horseshoe-shaped arches, an architectural element not in use in Georgia after the 9th–10th century. The rooms are arranged in an enfilade.
The forewings are pale brown to dark gray brown, with darker forms in colder months. There is a longitudinal dark stripe paler and less sharply defined than in other species, the lower margin of stripe blending into darker ground color below it. The wing margin is more rounded than in other species. Adults are on wing from April to August, but it is likely on the wing throughout the year.
These exposures provide excellent data on lateral variation and structure features within the fault zone. The most studied transects include the Moab Canyon, R191 Canyon, Corral Canyon, Courthouse Mine, Bartlett Wash, and Waterfall Canyon. The Moab Fault is a sharply defined brittle shear zone (1–10 m wide). The overall geometry of the southern fault segment is that of a faulted anticline, modified by a minor component of normal drag adjacent to the fault.
The cerebellopontine angle is formed by the cerebellopontine fissure. This fissure is made when the cerebellum folds over to the pons, creating a sharply defined angle between them. The angle formed in turn creates a subarachnoid cistern, the cerebellopontine angle cistern. The pia mater follows the outline of the fissure and the arachnoid mater continues across the divide so that the subarachnoid space is dilated at this area, forming the cerebellopontine angle cistern.
58.4 x 66 cm. Vatican Gallery, Vatican The top and bottom portions of the composition are markedly different, as the figures above are not sharply defined and they blend into each other with sweeping clouds. The figures, rock, and water in the lower portion, in contrast, are clear and have distinct shapes and lines. The merging between the two parts of the canvas is Dalí's depiction of the marriage between heaven and earth.
The shell contains 4 whorls, of which two constitute the protoconch, the last descending, and in slight contact with its predecessor. The protoconch is smooth, helicoid, and sharply defined. The sculpture of the shell shows in the body whorl twenty-four, in the penultimate whorl nineteen, elevated curled and forwardly-directed lamellae, whose broad summits nearly equal their interstices. The lamellae are smooth and glossy, but the interstices are distantly spirally striated.
The forewings are pale brown, tinged with golden and with a dark brown fascia at two-fifths, equidistant from the base at its costal and dorsal extremity, sharply defined externally and edged by a line of silvery white. Toward the base it passes gradually into the ground color of the wing. The extreme costa from the base to the fascia dark brown. There is a large costal patch of dark brown scales, beyond the middle.
Furthermore, the small black spots on the dorsum of the abdomen are somewhat larger. The underside of the abdomen is brown or brownish white. The forewing upperside is also similar to Xylophanes ockendeni but the ground colour is bright green, on which the darker markings stand out conspicuously. The postmedian line is dark green, more conspicuous, straighter and sharply defined and the area around the discal spot is darker, rendering the spot less conspicuous.
Most Anglo-Saxon women, however, worked on the land as part of the agricultural community, or as brewers or bakers.Mate, pp. 14–15. After the Norman invasion, the position of women in society changed. The rights and roles of women became more sharply defined, in part as a result of the development of the feudal system and the expansion of the English legal system; some women benefited from this, while others lost out.
Gender roles were sharply defined. Men were primarily responsible for breaking the land; planting and harvesting; building the house; buying, operating and repairing machinery; and handling finances. At first there were many single men on the prairie, or husbands whose wives were still back east, but they had a hard time. They realized the need for a wife. In 1901, there were 19,200 families, but this surged to 150,300 families only 15 years later.
It differs from the European wildcat by inconspicuous stripes on the nape and shoulders, a less sharply defined stripe across the spine and by the slender tail, which is cylindrical, less bushy and more tapering. Ears are normally tipped with a small tuft. Its fur is shorter than of the European wildcat, and it is considerably smaller. Skins of male wildcats from Northern Africa measure in head-to-body length with a long tail.
In 1967, a membership referendum upheld the board's policy. Brower had come to believe that nuclear power was a dangerous mistake at any location, and he publicly voiced his opposition to Diablo Canyon, in defiance of the Club's official policy. Sierra Club board elections in the late 1960s produced sharply defined pro- and anti-Brower factions. In 1968, Brower's supporters won a majority, but in 1969, anti-Brower candidates won all five open positions.
Some counterfeits were of poor quality, with obviously visible differences (less sharply defined, lacking intricate details, edge milling and markings visibly wrong). Many better counterfeits can be detected by comparing the orientation of the obverse and reverse—they should match in genuine modern UK coins, but very often did not in counterfeit round £1. The design on the reverse must be correct for the stamped year (e.g., a 1996 coin should have a Celtic cross).
The fertile area (the region that produces spores) is often irregularly wrinkled and sometimes notched at apex, and is up to wide; it tapers down the length of either side of the stem (i.e., decurrently) from a half to a third of the total stem length. The division between the head and the stem is sharply defined. The stem is hollow, smooth (glabrous), and has a white to yellowish mycelium at its base.
All leather needs to be prepared a certain way for leather carvers to carve the leather. The leather carver will "case" the leather by soaking it in water, then letting it dry to the proper dampness, thus making the leather easier to tool. If the leather is too dry, impressions will fade over time, or will not be made to a consistent depth. Too wet, it will not hold a sharply defined carving.
Tumefactive demyelination of the spinal cord is rare but it has been reported Damage is not confined to the demyelinating area. Wallerian degeneration outside the lesions has been reported. In general, during the acute phase, the plaques of lesions were characterized by massive demyelination with relatively axonal preservation associated with reactive astrocytosis and infiltration of macrophages. In plaques of chronic lesions, demyelinated lesions with relative axonal preservation and sharply defined margins were major findings.
A new religious movement (NRM) is a religious, ethical, or spiritual group or community with practices of relatively modern origins. NRMs may be novel in origin or they may exist on the fringes of a wider religion, in which case they will be distinct from pre-existing denominations. Academics identify a variety of characteristics which they employ in categorizing groups as new religious movements. The term is broad and inclusive, rather than sharply defined.
Coleotechnites juniperella is a moth of the family Gelechiidae. It is found in North America, where it has been recorded from New Jersey. The wingspan is about 9.5 mm. The forewings are creamy white, a sharply defined narrow band of black raised scales slightly and evenly curved from the base along the median line to the apex of the wing, at the base this black band extends to the costa to one eighth.
It has a sharply defined rim, a hummocky outer rampart, and an irregular interior due to slumping or fall-back. There is a small crater along the northern outer rampart, and a similar crater about 20 km to the west. The crater possesses a small ray system that extends for a radius of about 50 kilometers. It is surrounded by lunar mare that is dusted with ray material from Copernicus to the south.
The rim of this crater has been eroded and rounded due to a history of minor impacts. The terraces are still visible along the inner walls, although they are less sharply defined compared to younger crater formations. A pair of tiny craters form a notch along the eastern rim, and there is a slight inward bulge along the western inner wall. The interior has been resurfaced with lava, leaving a flat and relatively featureless floor.
The Normans adopted many Anglo-Saxon governmental institutions, but the feudal system concentrated more power in the hands of the king and a small elite. The rights and roles of women became more sharply defined. Noblewomen remained significant cultural and religious patrons and played an important part in political and military events. During the twelfth century divisions between conquerors and the English began to dissolve and they began to consider themselves superior to their Celtic neighbours.
E. christi Rätzer (36 c). This species comes nearest to cassiope, being however at least one-third larger. The forewing more elongate than in cassiope, apex and distal margin rounded, also in the hindwing, the apex of the latter being obtusely pointed in cassiope. The brown transverse band of the forewing is of even width and runs parallel with the distal margin, being sharply defined proximally and distally and separated by the veins into spots, usually 6.
Vazakas had written to Williams before the poem had appeared. Williams now wrote Vazakas, praising him for the piece and urging him to collect some of his work into a book. He also asked to see more of Vazakas's work as soon as possible. According to Mariani, the way Vazakas combined "a long prose line" and "a sharply defined, jagged-edged stanza" to stand independent of each other yet remain mutually complementary suggested a formal solution.
The stipe is long by thick, roughly spindle-shaped (fusiform), with red-brown fibrils and a sharply defined zone of white color at the stalk apex, especially in more mature specimens. The flesh is white or cream, smelling strongly of meal, with a bitter taste.Gryzyby―Fungi of Poland Spores have a roughly spherical or ellipsoid shape, are hyaline, smooth, non-amyloid, and have dimensions of 5.5—7.0 x 4.5—5.5 µm. Basidia are 4-spored and cystidia are absent.
The principal advantage over analog storage is that the stored traces are as bright, as sharply defined, and written as quickly as non-stored traces. Traces can be stored indefinitely or written out to some external data storage device and reloaded. This allows, for example, comparison of an acquired trace from a system under test with a standard trace acquired from a known-good system. Many models can display the waveform prior to the trigger signal.
The total cultivable area of the islands is only about 400 hectares. Although rainfall is abundant, wet and dry seasons are sharply defined. Better irrigation and drainage systems are needed to improve food crops. The government has taken various measures to reduce dependency on imported foods, including deregulating production and marketing and reducing the trades tax on fertilizers and equipment. As a result, vegetable and fruit production climbed from 505 tons in 1990 to 1,170 tons in 1992.
The operator would then use the intensity and focus controls to fine tune the signal and provide a sharp display. At the lowest sweep speed, the system also produced a local signal that was fed into the display and produced a sharply defined "pedestal", a rectangular shape displayed along the two traces. The amplified signal from the stations would also appear on the display, highly compressed in time so that it displayed as a series of sharp spikes (blips).
In 2003 The Independent named this play as one of the five best plays. In regards to the 2003 performance at the Traverse Theatre, Billington wrote that "Although Raffo is a fine actress, her transitions from one character to another are not always sharply defined. But aesthetic niggles pale beside the importance of her subject." Twair wrote that the performance in London in the September 2003 season was ranked among the best five plays in London.
C. sifanica from Amdo and the Qinghai Lake, is pale sulphur yellow above in male, with darkened base, diffuse dark marginal and submarginal markings and black middle spot. Antenna red. Underside with lighter ground colour than upper, but dusted with dark, the dark markings very feebly developed, the middle spot of the forewing being black with white centre, and that of hindwing white. The female impure white above, the dark markings more sharply defined, the hindwing being yellowish.
The dorsal lines of the upperside of the abdomen are pale and broad and divided medially by an indistinct, thin olive-green line that becomes broader and more distinct towards the abdomen base. The black basal and yellow lateral abdominal patches are less developed than in Xylophanes eumedon. The pattern of the forewing upperside is similar to that of Xylophanes titana, but darker. The median band of the hindwing upperside consists of sharply defined and distinct pale yellow spots.
This is an uncommon, benign condition which was originally described in the glans penis of older men but has a counterpart in women under a variety of terms (Zoon vulvitis, vulvitis circumscripta plasmacellularis, plasmacytosis mucosae). Most patients are adult, in reproductive age or postmenopausal (age range 26–70 years). Lesions on the vulva are usually asymptomatic, composed of solitary or multiple, sharply defined, red-brown,shiny patches which frequently exhibit a speckled and hemorrhagic surface. Ulceration commonly supervenes.
The hindwings have black marginal vein-spots on veins 2-6, and slight black dusting between them. The forewings of the females have a white proximal half as in Delias momea, but the outer edge is more indented on veins 2 and 3. There is a white postcellular bar of three spots, as well as five small submarginal spots. The hindwings have a broad black marginal border which is not as sharply defined as in momea.
To avoid stress concentrations, the webs form smooth curves rather than sharply defined spokes. Such wheels can be pressed from sheet steel, or cast in light alloy. Casting foundries prefer a disc that has a consistent wall thickness, as this makes shrinkage simpler to control. The Lotus wheel's peculiar shape was arrived at deliberately, by keeping this consistent wall thickness for ease of manufacture, and folding it to achieve the required variation of stiffness across the radius.
The forewings are nearly unicolorous blackish brown with the apical fourth a shade lighter. The two shades are faintly but sharply defined by a transverse line, which is slightly but sharply outwardly curved and pointed on the middle. There are four hardly perceptible darker brown spots, one near the base, one on the middle of the cell, one at the end of the cell and one on the middle of the fold. The hindwings are dark olivaceous brown.
Neutrons and protons (collectively known as nucleons) have comparable dimensions—on the order of —although the 'surface' of these particles is not sharply defined. The neutron was discovered in 1932 by the English physicist James Chadwick. In the Standard Model of physics, electrons are truly elementary particles with no internal structure, whereas protons and neutrons are composite particles composed of elementary particles called quarks. There are two types of quarks in atoms, each having a fractional electric charge.
Evenlode block-printed fabric. Textile printing is the process of applying colour to fabric in definite patterns or designs. In properly printed fabrics the colour is bonded with the fibre, so as to resist washing and friction. Textile printing is related to dyeing but in dyeing properly the whole fabric is uniformly covered with one colour, whereas in printing one or more colours are applied to it in certain parts only, and in sharply defined patterns.
The upper parts are a fairly uniform pale gray, and the underparts white. The head is white, with a black cap and line through the eye to the base of the bill, and a small white forehead patch above the bill; in winter, the white forehead is more extensive, with a smaller and less sharply defined black cap. The bill is yellow with a small black tip in summer, all blackish in winter. The legs are yellowish.
Talking Book is the fifteenth studio album by American singer, songwriter and musician Stevie Wonder, released on October 28, 1972, on the Tamla label for Motown Records. This album and Music of My Mind are widely noted as being the signal recordings of Wonder's "classic period".Some observers count six classic albums, some count five, and others count four. The sound of the album is sharply defined by Wonder's keyboard work, especially with the synthesizers he incorporated.
The most usual color is a dark slate-gray, through which the pearly layer, as through a heavy gauze, faintly shines. But if one still closer follows the color changes, we find upon the pearly layer a thick yellow one, visible also from outside on the base, for it extends over the whole umbilical tract as far as the inner lip. Usually this yellow tract merges into the ground color around its circumference. More seldom it is sharply defined.
The forewings are whitish-ochreous tinged with brownish and irrorated with fuscous. The basal fourth of the costa suffused with dark fuscous. There is a very indistinct irregular line of fuscous suffusion from the costa at one- fourth to the dorsum before the middle. There is a broad oblique fascia of dark fuscous suffusion, sharply defined and pale-edged anteriorly, very undefined posteriorly, from the costa about the middle, reaching more than half across the wing.
Frame overos have sharply defined, irregular, horizontally oriented white patches. As here, they are often bald-faced and white patches seldom cross the topline, creating a "frame" of non-white coat. The frame overo pattern is the most common of the three types of overo patterns recognized in the American Paint Horse breed. A frame overo horse appears to be any solid base color (bay, black, chestnut, etc.) with white irregular patches added, usually with a horizontal orientation.
Nudersher's early oil paintings reflected the vibrant urban atmosphere of St. Louis in the first half of the 20th century. Nuderscher captured industrial scenes, streetscapes, and monuments of urban progress such as the Eads Bridge. Nuderscher painted structures without sharply defined outlines and his tonalistic style conveyed the smoky air, filtered sun, and misty haze of the industrial city.Morrissey, Thomas E. Gateway Heritage. "Cityscapes and Ozark Views, The Art of Frank B. Nuderscher", Winter 1990-91, p. 70.
Testard started his career in Poitiers. His works include a page in a Missal for Poitiers Use, the La Rochefoucauld Hours, and two other Books of Hours. His middle period, characterised by tight compositions and sharply defined colouring, is typified by his Roman de la Rose, the Nouailher Missal and the Book of Hours, probably painted for Charles, Count of Angoulême about 1480. Surprisingly, 17 engravings by Israhel van Meckenem were included in the tome and coloured by Testard.
The expression of the mask shows stubbornness, anger and a mischievous and meddling nature. Sonpi (the teacher/scholar): Another character holding high social status, the mask has flared nostrils and sharply defined cheekbones to show an air of disapproval, conceit and disdain. The mask is wider at the top, coming almost to a point at the chin to represent and mock the large brain of the know-it- all scholar. The mask has a separate jaw attached with a chord or string.
The boundary of the North End is not definite. The darker highlighted area marks the traditional definition of the district, while a modern broad definition includes everything north of the old bridge. The subdivision referred to as the "North End" by Halifax residents was bounded on the east by "The Narrows" of Halifax Harbour and on the north by Bedford Basin. Its other boundaries as not as sharply defined, but the western limit of the subdivision is generally agreed to be Windsor street.
While the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) refers to both sabino and frame patterns as "overo", they are genetically unrelated and visually distinct. The frame spotting pattern is produced by the Ile118Lys mutation on the equine Endothelin receptor type B gene. Frame is characterized by jagged but sharply defined, horizontally oriented white patches on the horse's neck, shoulder, flank and hindquarters. By itself, the frame pattern does not produce white markings that cross the back, or affect the legs or tail.
The forewings are dark fuscous with two rather oblique wedge- shaped whitish-ochreous spots from the costa posteriorly, reaching half way across the wing. The hindwings are blackish fuscous with cloudy light fuscous suffused transverse streaks before and beyond the middle, the second indented in the middle. There is a sharply defined sub-metallic prismatic-fuscous streak from four-fifths of the costa to below the apex and continued along the termen to the middle.Transactions of the Entomological Society of London.
Sunscreen on back under normal and UV light One of the common uses for tanning beds is the option of tanning completely nude to reduce the appearance of tan lines. In contrast, some people prefer to have tan lines, and will wear undergarments or swimwear with the deliberate purpose of creating a sharply defined tan line. Additionally, "tanning stickers" can be purchased that attach to the skin while tanning. Common designs are a heart, Playboy bunny, and dolphins; but many different designs exist.
For a gemstone to show this effect best it must be cut en cabochon (rounded with a flat base rather than faceted), with the fibers or fibrous structures parallel to the base of the finished gem. The best finished specimens show a single sharply defined band of light that moves across the stone when it is rotated. Chatoyant stones of lesser quality display a banded effect as is typical with cat's-eye varieties of quartz. Faceted stones do not show the effect well.
Formerly forested, the landscape has been much affected by overgrazing. Le déclin du Jbel Ayachi - Les moutons marocains sabotent une montagne It is now dominated by sparse brush, loose stony soil, and sharply defined wadis and ravines. Nomadic Berbers have inhabited the mountains for many years, raising sheep and goats and remaining largely isolated from the sedentary farmers and market towns of the plains. The nomads often come into conflict with government foresters over the use of natural resources, especially trees.
What is clear from the evidence is that "Son of man" did not function in pre-Christian messianic expectations as a title for a deliverer expected to come in the last times. It was not even a sharply defined concept, with a specific content and reference. It could simply denote a member of the human race (Ps. 8:4) or be a way of pointing to a prophet's insignificance and finite dependence in the face of God's glory and infinite power.
This 30–32 cm long snipe has a stocky body and relatively short legs for a wader. Its upperparts, head and neck are streaked and patterned with dark brown and buff, and gold edges to the feathers form lines down its back, which are not as sharply defined as in most snipe species.. The belly is buff with brown barring on the flanks. The horn-coloured bill is long, straight and fairly robust. The legs and feet are yellowish-green.
Textile printing is related to dyeing but, whereas in dyeing proper the whole fabric is uniformly covered with one color, in printing one or more colors are applied to it in certain parts only, and in sharply defined patterns. In printing, wooden blocks, stencils, engraved plates, rollers, or silkscreens can be used to place colors on the fabric. Colorants used in printing contain dyes thickened to prevent the color from spreading by capillary attraction beyond the limits of the pattern or design.
In 1916 the internationalists succeeded in convening a second conference in the Swiss village of Kienthal. It is known as the Second Zimmerwald Conference. By this time groups of internationalists had been formed in nearly every European country and the cleavage between the internationalist elements and the 'social-chauvinists' had become more sharply defined. The manifesto drawn up by the Kienthal Conference was the result of an agreement between various conflicting groups; it was an advance on the Zimmerwald Manifesto.
The MWCO typically refers to the smallest average molecular mass of a standard molecule that will not effectively diffuse across the membrane upon extended dialysis. Thus, a dialysis membrane with a 10K MWCO will generally retain >90% of a protein having a molecular mass of at least 10 kDa. Pore sizes typically range from ~10–100 Angstroms for 1K to 50K MWCO membranes. It is important to note that the MWCO of a membrane is not a sharply defined value.
Almost immediately, Kahn was thrown into contact with railroad builder E. H. Harriman. In spite of sharply defined differences in temperament and method, they became as brothers. In opposition to Harriman's gruff, domineering, aggressive manner in business, was Kahn's calm, good-humored, almost gentle deportment. Kahn, although only 30 years old, took an almost equal part with Harriman in the gigantic task of reorganizing the Union Pacific Railroad, a work which in its early stages had been handled by Schiff.
Compared to Hemileuca maia larvae, Hemileuca lucina larvae are in general smaller and exhibit a sharply defined white stripe above the feet that is either faintly present or absent in H. maia larvae. For adult moths, H. maia is darker than H. lucina and also has narrower white forewing bands with circular spots. In contrast, H. nevadensis adults have wider white forewing bands that are more convex than H. lucina adults. In terms of translucence, H. nevadensis are generally more opaque.
The tuft on the second joint is compressed, pointed and longer than the terminal joint. The head and thorax are white. The dorsal half of the forewings from base to tornus is dark reddish-brown, with strong purple reflections, but lighter and more yellowish on the dorsal edge, gradually becoming darker and more purple towards the middle of the wing. Bordering this dorsal part, the edge of which is sharply defined as a straight central line, is a longitudinal pure white streak.
Among those birds that produce the most spectacular visual displays are the lyrebird (which also has an elaborate song), the peacock, and the riflebird (and indeed most other birds of paradise). The bowerbird invites potential partners to inspect its bower: a specially prepared area that contains a hut or walkway augmented by strikingly coloured objects. The intricate dances performed by manakins in Trinidad are also examined. Finally, Attenborough observes the topi's display courts, whose sharply defined boundaries are jealously guarded by rival males.
Botanical sketch of Pulmonaria officinalis showing seeds, from Flora von Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz 1885 Thomé The basal leaves are green, cordate, more or less elongated and pointed and always with rounded and often sharply defined white or pale green patches. The upper surface of the leaves has tiny bumps and it is quite hairy. The leaves of this host plant are eaten by the caterpillars of the moth Ethmia pusiella. In spring, the plant produces small bunches of flowers.
Although percussion instruments were generally rather unimportant in ancient Greek music, two exceptions were in dance music and ritual music of orgiastic cults. The former required instruments providing a sharply defined rhythm, particularly krotala (clappers with a dry, nonresonant sound) and kymbala (similar to finger-cymbals). The cult rituals required more exciting noises, such as those produced by drums, cymbals, jingles, and the rhombos (bull-roarer), which produced a demonic roaring noise particularly important to the ceremonies of the priests of Cybele.Mathiesen 2001; West 1992, 122.
The Datil-Mogollon Section is bounded on the east by basins of the Rio Grande rift, which are part of the Mexican Highland Section of the Basin and Range Province. Along the eastern edge of the Datil- Mogollon, the Mexican Highland extends northward along the Rio Grande depression to the Southern Rocky Mountains. The boundary between the depression and the uplifted Colorado Plateau is sharply defined by the westernmost faults of the depression. The transition has several large structural basins and block-faulted ranges.
Die Indo- Australien Tagfalter Grossschmetterlinge Erde 9 The wingspan is about 60–64 mm. The forewings of the males have a white area extended to beyond the end of the cell, its edge sharply defined, angled in cellule 4, incurved from the angle to vein 3, excurved to vein 2 and curved inwards to the inner margin close to the tornus. The costa is black to the base and connected with a black discocellular bar. There are two white subapical dots in the black distal area.
Irritator challengeris holotype is unique in that it is one of the few non-avian (or non-bird) dinosaur fossils found with a preserved stapes. Closeup of Irritators upper jaw and Irritator had straight or only faintly recurved conical teeth, bearing sharply defined but unserrated edges. Flutes (lengthwise ridges) were present on its tooth crowns, a common dental trait among spinosaurids. Both sides of Irritators teeth were fluted, as in Spinosaurus, whereas Baryonyx exhibited them only on the lingual (inward facing) side of its teeth.
Fender used denser wood for this model, resulting in a significantly heavier instrument (nine pounds versus the average Telecaster's seven). The resulting sound is much thicker and less sharply defined. Few well-known players of the time picked up on the Custom apart from Keith Richards, who used one as his main guitar from 1975 until 1983, and Mick Green (guitarist for The Pirates, Johnny Kidd, David Monteverde (guitarist for Goutucucha), Bryan Ferry, Van Morrison and Paul McCartney) who wielded a natural-finish 'second-version' Custom.
Much of his work was townscapes or landscapes with a melancholic feeling, often with a setting sun or a rising moon and typically done in autumn or winter. The landscapes are usually bare, skeletal and stylized, betraying the fact that he was a skilled etcher, but never detailed. Human or animal figures are not sharply defined but appear to dissolve into the background. As a result of his illness, from 1889 he did more work in the studio, such as portraits and still life.
The entire dorsal edge is white, reaching up the fold except right at the base and slightly crossing the fold with an upward projection at the apical third of the wing. Beginning at the basal one-fourth of the costa and reaching the costal white part is a sharply defined outwardly directed white fascia. At the apical fourth of the wing and nearly perpendicular on the costal edge is another narrower white fascia, somewhat dilated on the costal edge. The hindwings are silvery pale grey.
In German strongholds such as Fort Wayne, opposition to prohibition and women's suffrage was strong until World War I. As one historian notes, "within German working-class family traditions, women in particular were sharply defined in terms of family responsibilities. Suffrage and women's rights ran counter to deep social and religious traditions that placed women in a subservient relationship to men." Renewed interest in women's suffrage did not occur until the end of the century,Phillips, p. 500. while prohibition crusaders continued to press for legislative action.
Demuth's works often depicted a specific range of forms in a quasi-Cubist, sharply defined manner, a characteristic of Precisionism. Frequently occurring scenes within Demuth's works are urban and rural landscapes, often consisting of industrial features such as bridges, smoke stacks, and skyscrapers. Demuth's "Aucassin and Nicolette," which can be viewed below, is an exemplary work of Precisionist art. Notable features include the highly structured scene lacking figures, depiction of an industrial setting, and sharp linearity created by geometric figures with no hint of abstraction.
Cantharellus lateritius is pinker than the golden chanterelle (C. cibarius), and has thicker flesh in addition to the smoother hymenial surface. C. odoratus is also similar in appearance, and is distinguished by a thinner flesh and a hollow stem. The poisonous "Jack O'Lantern" mushroom, Omphalotus olearius, is roughly similar in stature and color, but can be differentiated from C. lateritius by its true gills with sharply defined edges, and growth on decaying wood (although the wood may be buried in the soil), usually in large overlapping clusters.
Instead they chose to adopt various—in some cases academic—styles of realism in depicting American urban and rural scenes. Grant Wood, Reginald Marsh, Guy Pène du Bois, and Charles Sheeler exemplify the realist tendency in different ways. Sheeler and the modernists Charles Demuth and Ralston Crawford were referred to as Precisionists for their sharply defined renderings of machines and architectural forms. Edward Hopper, who studied under Henri, developed an individual style of realism by concentrating on light and form, and avoiding overt social content.
In the common law, judicial estoppel (also known as estoppel by inconsistent positions) is an estoppel that precludes a party from taking a position in a case that is contrary to a position it has taken in earlier legal proceedings. Although, in the United States, it is only a part of common law and therefore not sharply defined, it is generally agreed that it can only be cited if the party in question successfully maintained its position in the earlier proceedings and benefited from it.
Sandwiched between the release of Music of My Mind and Innervisions, Talking Book saw Wonder enjoying more artistic freedom from Motown. Guest musicians appearing include Jeff Beck, Ray Parker Jr., David Sanborn, and Buzz Feiten. The sound of the album is sharply defined by Wonder's keyboard work, especially with the synthesizers he incorporated, giving a funky edge to tracks like "Maybe Your Baby". His use of the Hohner clavinet model C on "Superstition" is widely regarded as one of the definitive tracks featuring the instrument.
This is one of several such valleys that radiate away from the southeast edge of the Mare Orientale impact basin, the other two being Vallis Inghirami and Vallis Baade. Shaler has been affected by its location on the southern edge of the Montes Cordillera, as the floor is rough and irregular, particularly toward the southwest where several small, parallel clefts appear in the surface. The rim is nearly circular, although slightly flattened along the south edge, and the edge remains sharply defined with little appearance of erosion.
View from Apollo 15 Lunar Orbiter 4 image Anuchin is a lunar impact crater that lies on the southern hemisphere on the far side of the Moon. It is located to the south of the larger crater Lamb, and to the north-northwest of Kugler. The rim of Anuchin remains relatively sharply defined, although it has been subject to wear due to subsequent impacts. The satellite crater Anuchin L lies astride the southern rim, but the otherwise the outer wall is not significantly incised.
Die Indo-Australien Tagfalter Grossschmetterlinge Erde 9 The wingspan is about 50 mm. Males are white, the forewings with the distal half black to the end of the cell, its edge not sharply defined, and the costa black at the base. The hindwings have a narrow black margin becoming merely a line below vein 4. Females usually have a slight yellow tinge, the forewings with the black area broader on the inner margin and usually extended into the end of the cell, leaving a white discocellular dot.
Bjerknes was part of a group of meteorologists led by his father, Vilhelm Bjerknes, at the University of Leipzig. Together they developed the model that explains the generation, intensification and ultimate decay (the life cycle) of mid-latitude cyclones, introducing the idea of fronts, that is, sharply defined boundaries between air masses. This concept is known as the Norwegian cyclone model.Jacob Aall Bonnevie Bjerknes (1897–1975) (American Geophysical Union) Bjerknes returned to Norway in 1917, where his father founded the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen in Bergen.
Pocock's The Fauna of British India, including Ceylon and Burma - Mammalia Vol 2 The steppe polecat does not hold sharply defined home ranges. During warm seasons, especially in areas rich in ground squirrels, aged polecats hold relatively stable territories until they have extirpated their prey. Younger polecats are less sedentary, and will sleep overnight in the burrows of ground squirrels they have killed. Females nursing their litters are the most settled, but will begin roaming once the kits are old enough to accompany them.
Buck Creek, a well-watered and dependable spring-fed stream rising in the mountains north of Whiterock Mountain, flows through a sharply-defined valley north of Moyers to its confluence with the Kiamichi. Ten Mile Creek—also spring-fed but more seasonally-dependent—flows east and south of Moyers. Two significant manmade structures are nearby, and due to their size and permanence have become a part of local topography: the elevated beds of the rail spur winding around the base of Parker Mountain, and the Frisco Railroad.
The forewings are snuff brown. From the basal third of the costa a broad scarlet fascia curves inwardly and broadens to the base of the wing. The scarlet band is mixed with orange and a few sepia scales across the fold and the fascia is bordered outwardly by an ill-defined sepia line. On the costa, just beyond the apical third, is a sharply defined, small white triangle from which arises an ill-defined, outwardly curved, narrow, sepia fascia which extends to the dorsum at the tornus.
The Martinengo Pietà is an oil painting on panel of by Giovanni Bellini, signed on the rock to the left of the Virgin. It was previously in the collections of the Martinengo family and of Donà delle Rose and is now in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. One of Bellini's last works, it still shows him adapting to innovations by Titian and Giorgione and incorporating elements of the Vesperbild, the German variant on the pietà. Albrecht Dürer was in Venice at this time and the work's contorted hands and sharply defined drapery recall his work.
Patterns of root traces including their shape and size, is good evidence for the vegetation type the former soil supported. Bluish colours in the soil tend to indicate the plants have mobilized nutrients within the soil. The horizons of fossil soils typically are sharply defined only in the top layers, unless some of the parent material has not been obliterated by soil formation. The kinds of horizons in fossil soils are, though, generally the same as those found in present-day soils, allowing easy classification in modern taxonomy of all but the oldest soils.
Its surface appearance resembles that of the northern kermi bogs. From its central plateau which lies near the higher edge of the bog in the north, where the peat is up to 8 metres thick in places, the surface of the terrain falls away on all sides. The central plateau forms an almost rectangular area with a length of about 800 metres from northwest to southeast and a width of about 400 metres. On the steepest slopes there are hollows running parallel to the contours: elongated, sharply defined troughs known as flarks (Schlenken).
Mawson Corridor () is a sea passage between grounded icebergs on the approach to Mawson Station at Holme Bay, Antarctica. It is about long and wide, opening out at the southern end to give the feature a funnel shape. The northern end at 66°45′S 63°20′E is sharply defined and coincides with the edge of the continental shelf; from there it bears 202°. The passage was discovered by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) in 1954, and was used regularly by ANARE relief ships in their approach to Mawson Station.
There is a large dark brown patch on dorsal edge near the base. The costal base is of the general color of the wing and there is a blackish ill- defined costal spot at the apical third, which runs out in a dark shade across the wing. Just before this spot is another smaller, more sharply defined costal blackish spot. Along the veins and in the disk are longitudinal dark lines, sharpest and darkest in the apical part of the wing, and each terminating at the base of the cilia in a deep black spot.
The Court in Tellier stated that only in extremely limited circumstances would a deduction that meets the requirements of § 162 be disallowed where Congress is silent. Specifically, the Court decided that a deduction that otherwise meets the requirements of § 162 will be disallowed where allowance would "frustrate sharply defined national or state policies proscribing particular types of conduct… evidenced by some governmental declaration". The state policy at issue in Tank Truck Rentals v. Commissioner356 U.S. 30 (1958), provides an example of the type of policy evidenced by some governmental declaration that would limit deduction.
The ground colour of the main form is purer and more extended white than in Parnassius delphius, bands of forewing rather sharply defined, but narrow, no black shading on disc in male, hindmarginal spot present; hindwing with narrow grey margin, a submarginal band of halfmoons, two rather large blackish anal spots, small ocelli, filled in with deep red. Female with stronger markings, disc of forewing dusted with black, submarginal band broader, ocelli of hindwing larger, the margin of hindwing more strongly blackened. From Sarafshan (Samarkand), Alai and Transalai mountains.Stichel in Seitz, 1906 (Parnassius).
18 Hubbard and his collaborators decided to announce Dianetics in Campbell's Astounding Science Fiction instead. In an editorial, Campbell said: "Its power is almost unbelievable; it proves the mind not only can but does rule the body completely; following the sharply defined basic laws set forth, physical ills such as ulcers, asthma and arthritis can be cured, as can all other psychosomatic ills."Quoted in Miller, p. 145 The birth of Hubbard's second daughter Alexis Valerie, delivered by Winter on March 8, 1950, came in the middle of the preparations to launch Dianetics.
Specimens from south Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina differ so little that they cannot be separated. This form is in the male dark orange yellow, specimens with violet reflections are not rare; the black-brown distal margin is not sharply defined proximally. The under surface with the exception of the reddish middle of the forewing is vivid yellow with the usual Colias marking. The ground colour of the upper surface in the females is very variable: orange yellow, yellow, yellowish or white with grey dusting; greenish-grey specimens also occur.
The wrap-around blaze, tapered stocking, all-over roaning and roaned edges of the white patches suggest that this is a frame- sabino blend. Horses carrying both frame and sabino genes can be expected to show characteristics of both patterns. While frame alone is seldom responsible for white leg markings, a frame-sabino blend might have frame body markings and white markings on the legs. Similarly, while frame alone usually produces markings with jagged but sharply defined white patches, the addition of sabino can be expected to have roaned edges and roaning on the body.
The spirals on the later whorls are stronger, consisting of primaries with alternating finer, secondary threads in pairs; transverse ribs stronger and more numerous on the later whorls (25 on the last) and more sharply defined. The intersecting ribs and spirals form a beautiful cancellation ornamenting the whorls up to the margin of the groove, where the ribs end abruptly. In the groove, lines of growth and fine, subequal spirals form the only sculpture. The upper margin of the groove is marked by a sharp carination sloping steeply to the suture.
Perhaps the best example of narrowcasting are electronic mailing lists where messages are sent only to individuals who subscribe to the list. Narrowcasting is also sometimes applied to podcasting, since the audience for a podcast is often specific and sharply defined. Dr. Jonathan Sterne of McGill University stated, "Narrowcasting is a form of broadcasting, if the latter term is understood as the 'wide dissemination of content through mechanical or electronic media'". Other one-way, traditional media approaches to narrowcasting, such as Internet Talk Radio, can be contrasted with broadcast radio programs.
The forewings have a greenish- yellow proximal area extended to vein 3, its edge not sharply defined and there is a subapical row of four chrome-yellow patches, often also a subcostal streak and a fifth spot in 2. The patches in 4 and 5 are larger than the others. The hindwings have the proximal three-fourths of the costa white, and there is a proximal greenish-yellow area extending to the end of the cell, its edge diffuse. There are usually two yellow submarginal dots in 5 and 6.
Pine tree rings One commonly cited date for the end of the Younger Dryas and the start of the Pre-Boreal is 11,500 Before Present calibrated. The start of the period is relatively sharply defined by a rise of 7 °C in 50 years in South Greenland. The date is based fairly solidly on Greenland ice cores, which give 11,640 BP for the late Younger Dryas and 11,400 BP for the early Pre-Boreal. Varves But estimates of other dates vary by up to 1000 years, for a number of reasons.
Munn's view of the library as "educational, informational, and cultural" sparked controversy. His preference for a high- quality collection over popularly requested materials led to a "revised book selection policy that sharply defined and limited the purchase of 'light, recreational fiction' and effectively eliminated the acquisition of books that he categorized as 'shopping bag fiction'." This choice significantly benefited the reputation of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, but brought into question problematic and complex issues that still affect the field today, e.g., neutrality in acquisitions, the role of the librarian in acquiring popular vs.
Up to the middle 20th Century the upper crust in continental regions was seen to consist of felsic rocks such as granite (sial, for silica- aluminium), and the lower one to consist of more magnesium-rich mafic rocks like basalt (sima, for silica-magnesium). Therefore, the seismologists of that time considered that the Conrad discontinuity should correspond to a sharply defined contact between the chemically distinct two layers, sial and sima. However, from the 1960s onward this theory was strongly contested among geologists. The exact geological significance of the Conrad discontinuity is still not clarified.
Sexes are similar, the female slightly smaller in size and lacking the spur. The tail has 14 feathers, the third primary is the longest while the first is level with the fifth and sixth primaries. It is very similar to the rock partridge (Alectoris graeca) with which it has been lumped in the past but is browner on the back and has a yellowish tinge to the foreneck. The sharply defined gorget distinguishes this species from the red-legged partridge which has the black collar breaking into dark streaks near the breast.
The forewings are dark fuscous with a whitish-ochreous antemedian fascia, straight and sharply defined anteriorly, broadly suffused posteriorly, followed by a blackish-fuscous discal dot. The posterior area is lighter and somewhat sprinkled with whitish ochreous, with a whitish-ochreous line running from the costa about three-fourths to the dorsum before the tornus, angulated inwards above the middle and outwards in the middle, well- defined anteriorly but more or less suffused posteriorly, forming a spot or patch on the costa. The hindwings are whitish ochreous, more or less infuscated (darkened) towards the apex.
He found Rhapsody in Blue to be the second-best in the film with its witty, hyper-kinetic evocation of the melting pot with sharply defined characters. He found the segment with the flamingos cute and the one with the tin soldier to be romantic. James Berardinelli found the film to be of uneven quality. He felt Symphony No. 5 was "dull and uninspired", the yo-yoing flamingos "wasteful", and the New York City-based story of Rhapsody in Blue interesting but out of place in this particular movie.
In: Mannheimer Morgen 2012, 4th of April His stays abroad, e.g. 1995 in Katwijk aan Zee in the Netherlands, 2005 on the Isle of Skye and 2006 to La Ciotat he perceives as research expeditions concerning light and colors. Katwijk has already had an international artists' colony in the 19th century. La Ciotat in southern France has also always attracted artists, because of the sharply defined contrasts in the southern light conditions by the sea, and the harbor atmosphere, which fascinated the artists already at the beginning of the 20th century.
Callionymus reticulatus, the reticulated dragonet, is a species of dragonet native to the northeastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea where it is found at depths of from . This species grows to a length of TL. This species has a flattened head and body, the head has a triangular shape with the eyes placed on the top of the head. It has two dorsal fins with the first one being triangular in shape. It has blue spots along the flanks and four saddle-like markings on their backs which have sharply defined outlines.
It is similar to the common dragonet but is distinguished by its smaller size and the sharply defined border around the saddle markings on the back. The reticulated dragonet is found only in the eastern Atlantic Ocean from Norway Morocco, including the Azores, and into the western Mediterranean Sea at least as far as Malaga. In the North Sea it has been recorded as far east as the Kattegat. The reticulated dragonet is a demersal species that occurs in inshore waters, even in the intertidal zone, over sandy substrates.
It is the only part of Albuquerque where the water table often lies close to the surface, sometimes less than . The last significant area of Albuquerque geologically is the West Mesa: this is the elevated land west of the Rio Grande, including "West Bluff", the sandy terrace immediately west and above the river, and the rather sharply defined volcanic escarpment above and west of most of the developed city. The west mesa commonly has soils often referred to as "blow sand", along with occasional clay and caliche and even basalt, nearing the escarpment.
By 1912, this deflecting force was named the Coriolis effect. Just after World War I, a group of meteorologists in Norway led by Vilhelm Bjerknes developed the Norwegian cyclone model that explains the generation, intensification and ultimate decay (the life cycle) of mid-latitude cyclones, and introduced the idea of fronts, that is, sharply defined boundaries between air masses. The group included Carl-Gustaf Rossby (who was the first to explain the large scale atmospheric flow in terms of fluid dynamics), Tor Bergeron (who first determined how rain forms) and Jacob Bjerknes.
According to biographer Shirley Mangini, "Although historians of Spanish avant-garde art locate the origins of the movement in the activities of Salvador Dalí, Luis Buñuel, Federico García Lorca, and another student at the Residencia, José Bello, Mallo's artistic vision was an important catalyst in the Spanish avant-garde movement." Her paintings of the 1920s represent urban entertainments and sports, composed in complex overlapping arrangements that express the dynamism of modern life. These works, such as La Verbena (The Festival) of 1927, combine sharply defined, smoothly modeled forms with bright colors.
Depiction of Chiron with rings. Chiron possibly has rings, similar to the better-established rings of 10199 Chariklo. Based on unexpected occultation events observed in stellar- occultation data obtained on 7 November 1993, 9 March 1994, and 29 November 2011, which were initially interpreted as resulting from jets associated with Chiron's comet-like activity, Chiron's rings are proposed to be in radius and sharply defined. Their changing appearance at different viewing angles can largely explain the long-term variation in Chiron's brightness and hence estimates of Chiron's albedo and size.
Before signing with Paramount Pictures in the 1930s, Nussbaum had already changed his last name to Ankrum. Upon signing with the studio, he chose to use the name "Stephen Morris" before changing it to Morris Ankrum in 1939. Ankrum's stern visage and sharply defined features helped cast him in supporting roles as stalwart authority figures, including scientists, military men (particularly army officers), judges, trail hands, bankers, and even psychiatrists in more than 270 films and television episodes. Among his best remembered parts are his numerous villainous roles in Paramount's highly popular Hopalong Cassidy film series.
In winter, Lake effect snowfall occurs. In spring and summer, lake breezes can penetrate inland, creating narrow boundaries more inland causing cloudy conditions, severe thunderstorms, and convective rainfall events. This is known as the "lake breeze front" or "lake breeze thunderstorms" phenomenon, in which intense, sharply defined squall lines develop quickly on summer afternoons amplified by localized wind patterns between the Great Lakes. This is seen by the tendency for thunderstorms from the west to weaken/dissipate as they approach Toronto Pearson Airport, located in the southeastern part of the region.
Each sporangium bears 64 spores. The plants are diploid, with a chromosome number of 2n = 54. Within the heart of its range, in Mexico, A. incana is both the most widespread member of the genus and the most variable. Some of the characteristics observed to vary are the size of segments (reduced to wide), the density of adaxial farina, the shape and color of the blade axes (zigzag rather than straight, and dark purplish rather than black), and the joint at the base of leaf segments (more sharply defined).
Each depressed segment within the interior of the barrel is the equivalent of a groove in a conventional barrel. Thus, the interior of the barrel consists of smooth arcs of steel rather than sharply defined slots. Instead of using a traditional broaching machine to cut the rifling into the bore, the hammer forging process involves beating a slowly rotating mandrel through the bore to obtain the hexagonal or octagonal shape.Kasler, 138 As a result, the barrel's thickness in the area of each groove is not compromised as with conventional square-cut barrels.
Species that belong to this genus typically reach lengths of 60–80 cm, while B. aurifer, B. bicolor and B. lateralis are known to grow to 1 m or more. General characteristics include a sharply defined canthus rostralis, an unelevated snout, a rostral scale that is not as high as it is broad, and a prehensile tail that accounts for at least 15% of the body length. The color pattern usually consists of a green ground color that may or may not include pale or dark markings. B. schlegelii is an exception to this rule.
The best known type of artwork that has survived is the marble figurine, most commonly a single full- length female figure with arms folded across the front. The type is known to archaeologists as a "FAF" for "folded-arm figure(ine)". Apart from a sharply- defined nose, the faces are a smooth blank, although there is evidence on some that they were originally painted. Considerable numbers of these are known, though unfortunately most were removed illicitly from their unrecorded archaeological context, which seems usually to be a burial.
The tail shield is dominated by a pair of large segmental marginal spines, reminiscent of large (or macropleural) spines in the thorax and of pygidial spines of certain trilobites. The one node it carries is larger and more sharply defined than the nodes on the segments. The frontal border of the tail shield is convex and curves laterally into the large spines which extend postero-laterally, constituting half the total body length. The back margin of the spines is concave and merges into a second pair of short, broad, triangular spines.
If irradiated with select projectile nuclei at kinetic energies Ekin, target solid thin-film chemical elements can undergo a nuclear reaction under resonance conditions for a sharply defined resonance energy. The reaction product is usually a nucleus in an excited state which immediately decays, emitting ionizing radiation. To obtain depth information the initial kinetic energy of the projectile nucleus (which has to exceed the resonance energy) and its stopping power (energy loss per distance traveled) in the sample has to be known. To contribute to the nuclear reaction the projectile nuclei have to slow down in the sample to reach the resonance energy.
Thus, a dialysis membrane with a 10K MWCO will generally retain greater than 90% of a protein having a molecular mass of at least 10kDa. It is important to note that the MWCO of a membrane is not a sharply defined value. Molecules with mass near the MWCO limit of the membrane will diffuse across the membrane more slowly than molecules significantly smaller than the MWCO. In order for a molecule to rapidly diffuse across a membrane, it typically needs to be at least 20- to 50-times smaller than the MWCO rating of a membrane.
It advances on the body whorl, then retreats so as to form a feeble sinus, bending at the same time shortly but sharply to the right into the umbilicus and then advancing straight forward, but a little toward the left, to its junction with the outer lip at the base. The funnel-shaped umbilicus is open- mouthed, oblique edged, straight-sided, deep and contracted internally. Its edge is sharply defined by a spiral thread, and is obliquely scored by the longitudinal ribs. Farther in, its walls are marked by hair-like lines of growth and faint spirals.
Occasionally one sees through flowers in the foreground to focus upon a blossom sharply defined. No other flower photographs have captured their subjects with such sensitivity to colour and form.” Such framing-in-depth is evident in his picture City Child which in 1953 had won a $2,000 award,Newsweek, Volume 42, 1953, Page 60 and was chosen in 1955 by Edward Steichen for MoMA's world-touring The Family of Man exhibition that was seen by 9 million visitors; Grehan's camera candidly observes through broken fence palings a young girl alone and lost in her thoughts in an overgrown, neglected city garden.
Retrieved July 7, 2017.Moth Photographers Group at Mississippi State University The wingspan is about 7 mm for males and 8.2 mm for females. The forewings are bright golden brown, with a dark, rich, velvety brown, broad fascia at one-third from the base, sharply defined on both sides, darkest, nearly black, and somewhat broader at the dorsal edge, where it terminates in slightly raised scales, projecting outside the edge of the wing in a dorsal tooth, and forming (at rest) a curious hump on the back. This fascia is still more thickly scaled than the rest of the wing.
Seen from the west, Watson's Dodd is a noticeable shoulder on the Helvellyn ridge, north of Sticks Pass. The summit stands on the main ridge of the Helvellyn range at the point where the south-west ridge of Great Dodd and the north-west ridge of Stybarrow Dodd meet and merge. From this point a shoulder drops into the valley of the How Beck at Legburthwaite. This shoulder, part of the High Fells of St John's Common, is sharply defined by the deep valleys of Mill Gill to its north and Stanah Gill to its south.
The genus Polygala was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1754. Phylogenetic studies showed that, as traditionally circumscribed, the genus was not monophyletic. It had become a "wastebasket taxon"; almost all species with a flower apparently similar to those of the Papilionoideae – two petaloid lateral sepals forming 'wings', two petals forming a 'standard', and one petal forming a 'keel', plus a bilocular fruit capsule – were placed in Polygala, while species with more obviously specialized features, particularly those of the fruit, were placed in other genera. In 2011, John Richard Abbott separated some more sharply defined genera from Polygala.
Against the background of greenery, with its sprinkling of butterflies, pinks and columbines, the profile is sharply defined. Her hair is styled to create the appearance of a high, round forehead, an attribute of beauty in Renaissance Italy. Women of this era frequently plucked their eyebrows, hairlines, and drew hair tightly away from the face to accentuate this quality. The only solid basis for a hypothesis of identification is the embroidery on her sleeve, representing the two-handled vase of the Este family; this is also found on the reverse of a medal which Pisanello designed for Lionello d'Este.
Dawn at an altitude of 272 km, shown in the context of the image at left taken from 700 km. Claudia is a small (700 meter) crater that defines the prime meridian of asteroid 4 Vesta in the coordinate system used by the Dawn mission team, NASA, and the IAU Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature, though it is not accepted by the IAU as a whole. It is located at 1.6°S and 4.0°W.Claudia crater, Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature, retrieved 2012-09-15 Claudia was chosen because it is small, sharply defined, easy to find, and near the equator.
This sharply defined edge of geest runs northeast through the parish of Ritterhude and the county town of Osterholz-Scharmbeck as far as the region of Bremervörde. There the Osterholz Geest borders on the Zeven Geest near Karlshöfen. The Joch, which forms both ridges of geest at this point, dates back to a Saale glaciation water outlet (Gletschertor) and is the northern end of the Hamme glacial valley, in whose depression the Teufelsmoor ("Devil’s Bog") was formed. The northern and western edge of the geest are, by contrast, flat and transition in the northwest into the Beverstedt Moorgeest region around Bremerhaven.
The receiver beam pattern of the two aerial system was still approximately 40° across, but this was now divided into seven sharply defined lobes, with a central lobe only about 4° across. The motion of the vehicle driving slowly was used as the scanning mechanism and a rotation sensor on the speedometer drive provided the X-axis scanning signal for the display. A manual pushbutton was pressed as each house boundary was passed. The ideal detection display was thus a series of seven peaks, centred on the position between the two house markers for the target house.
Depending on the definition, the term may apply only to isolated atoms, or also to atoms in condensed matter, covalently bonding in molecules, or in ionized and excited states; and its value may be obtained through experimental measurements, or computed from theoretical models. The value of the radius may depend on the atom's state and context. Electrons do not have definite orbits, or sharply defined ranges. Rather, their positions must be described as probability distributions that taper off gradually as one moves away from the nucleus, without a sharp cutoff; these are referred to as atomic orbitals or electron clouds.
Low mass axions could have additional structure at the galactic scale. If they continuously fall into galaxies from the intergalactic medium, they would be denser in "caustic" rings, just as the stream of water in a continuously-flowing fountain is thicker at its peak. The gravitational effects of these rings on galactic structure and rotation might then be observable. Other cold dark matter theoretical candidates, such as WIMPs and MACHOs, could also form such rings, but because such candidates are fermionic and thus experience friction or scattering among themselves, the rings would be less sharply defined.
The term settlement archaeology initially referred to a research methodology whose most important exponent was Gustaf Kossinna, who developed his "settlement archaeology method" beginning in 1887. According to Kossinna and his disciples, cultures, cultural areas and, ultimately, settlement areas of ethnic groups can be deduced through types and their assemblages. This equation of "archaeological culture", ethnicity, and race led, especially during National Socialist rule, to a fateful and alarming combination of archaeological research with racial ideology. One of the core tenets of Kossinna's teaching was that sharply defined archaeological cultural areas coincide at all times with particular peoples (Völkern) or tribes.
Oblique Lunar Orbiter 5 image Störmer is a lunar impact crater that is located on the far side of the Moon from the Earth, named after Carl Størmer, a Norwegian mathematician and aurora researcher. It lies in the northern part of the lunar surface, to the southeast of the crater Olivier and to the north of van Rhijn. This is a relatively young formation with features that have not received a significant amount of wear or erosion from subsequent impacts. The edge of the rim is sharply defined, and the inner wall is terraced along the northwestern side.
Troughs and ridges are present throughout the quadrangle. Where the troughs are not clearly radial to crater or basin centers, they may be grabens; however, in most places they are difficult to distinguish from linear gouges produced by impact ejecta at low-angle ballistic trajectories. Some ridges resemble those on the lunar maria, but generally they are less sharply defined. Ridges interpreted to be buried rim crests of two ancient basins are partly visible almost due north of Beethoven basin; the probable centers of the basins are near latitude 11° S., longitude 127° and latitude 2° N., longitude 124°.
Division of labor within the nests of V. pensylvanica is not sharply defined and is seemingly age-dependent. Within four days of emergence, workers begin foraging for fiber, nectar, water, and prey, larval feeding, construction of envelope and cells, nest sanitation, guarding and colony defense, thermal regulation; and “mauling” or aggressive behavior. Workers that emerge from the nest after the first 20–30 since its development express more variable behavior. Queens exhibit the same range of behavior with the exception of mauling; however, after four to seven workers emerge in mid-June, workers take over foraging.
It became a fashionable residential street, with elegant terrace houses overlooking the maturing Hyde Park.Mackaness & Butler-Bowden, 2007, 58 left The eastern boundary was not sharply defined when the Macquaries departed in 1821. A map of that year shows a vegetable garden of 11 acres allocated to the Barracks and a site marked out for the Roman Catholic Chapel... "near the rubbish dump". The foundation stone for what would become St. Mary's Cathedral was laid in 1821 on a site adjoining Hyde Park's north-eastern side, the first site granted to the Roman Catholic Church in Australia.
The costa, except the spots, is edged with ocherous and there is a brown dot at the end of the cell. In females, the forewings are ocherous heavily shaded with brown, with three costal spots, the basal one indistinct, small, others larger, more sharply defined. From the apical costal spot extend two outwardly curving, indistinct parallel, dark, transverse lines to the tornus and from the middle costal spot extends an outwardly curving, indistinct, transverse line. The costa is narrowly dark brown basally, edged with ocherous beyond, except the spots and there is a small faint dot at the end of the cell.
The wingspan is 21–24 mm. The forewings are light greyish ochreous with a broad blackish brown oblique fascia, this begins on the costa from the basal fourth to the middle of the costa and reaches to the middle of the dorsum. The edges are not even but reasonably parallel and sharply defined against the lighter basal and apical parts of the wing. At the apical third is an indistinct and ill-defined dark fuscous cloud parallel with the fascia and mainly noticeable by its outer edge, which appears as a dark, thin, undulating line from a small costal spot to the tornus.
The forewings are light fuscous, the costa anteriorly darker, with a slight blackish subcostal mark at the base and a triangular sharply defined blackish blotch in the disc about one-third, its apex resting on the fold anteriorly, the base direct-transverse posteriorly. There is a blackish mark on the costa before the middle and a sharply marked transverse blackish spot in the disc at three-fifths, rather widened upwards. An indistinct pale greyish-ochreous transverse line is found at four-fifths parallel to the termen, edged anteriorly with dark fuscous suffusion, indented above the middle. The hindwings are pale ochreous grey.
Of the two Khok Kruat Formation tooth morphotypes assigned by Kamonrak and colleagues in 2019, morphotype I, the Khok Kruat morphotype, is on average in total length, of which the crown takes up , with a wide base. They are oval in cross section, have well-defined carinae, and a smooth enamel surface, which becomes wrinkled at the base of the crown. They bear fine, sharply defined flutes, of which there are about 21 to 32 on each side. Morphotype II, the Siamosaurus morphotype, is on average long, with a tall crown that is wide at the base.
Continuous ejecta deposits are less extensive, and secondary craters are more sharply defined and clustered nearer their primary crater. Also on Mercury, accentuated secondary craters form prominent crater chains radial to large craters. Craters within the Kuiper quadrangle increase in complexity as they increase in size from simple bowl-shaped craters to complex craters with central peaks to multiringed basins. Kuiper (11° S., 31.5°) is a moderate-size crater with a central peak cluster; Brunelleschi (9° S., 22.5°) exhibits an incomplete ring of peaks; and Rodin (22° N., 18°) is a well-developed double-ringed basin.
South Guthrie, which grew up alongside Guthrie, was known historically by the nicknames "Squiggtown" and "Niggertown", the latter being a pejorative used by white residents of Guthrie. In the early decades of the 20th century, residents of South Guthrie found industrial employment in a broom factory and a plant that made railroad ties. South Guthrie also had a small middle class of African-American professionals and benefited economically from African-American tobacco farmers in the surrounding "Black Patch" region. South Guthrie is still predominantly black, while Guthrie is predominantly white, although the divisions are not as sharply defined as they were historically.
From the figure of the artist, the viewer's eye leaps again diagonally into the pictorial space. Another man stands, echoing and opposing the form of the artist, outside rather than inside, made clearly defined and yet barely identifiable by the light and shade. The positioning of such an area of strong tonal contrast right at the rear of the pictorial space is a daring compositional tactic. The shapes of bright light are similar to the irregular light shapes of the foreground Maid of Honour, but the sharply defined door- frame repeats the border of the mirror.
This emission was detected where a previous survey found gas streaming from the outer disk to the inner disk, so it was assumed that the emission resulted from mass falling from the inner disk to the outer disk. Observations taken in 2014 showed similar results. Indeed, observations of the circumstellar disk around GG Tauri found "sharply-defined features" around the disk: simulations of GG Tauri's disk indicate that these are likely due to the gravitational forces from the two stellar components. A "gap" in the larger circumstellar disk has been detected at the three-o'clock position, at a position angle of about 268°.
The first dredge-up occurs during hydrogen shell burning on the red-giant branch, but does not produce a large carbon abundance at the surface. The second, and sometimes third, dredge up occurs during helium shell burning on the asymptotic-giant branch and convects carbon to the surface in sufficiently massive stars. The stellar limb of a red giant is not sharply defined, contrary to their depiction in many illustrations. Rather, due to the very low mass density of the envelope, such stars lack a well-defined photosphere, and the body of the star gradually transitions into a 'corona'.
Summer heat episodes are usually broken by cooler, drier periods if only for brief periods. Thunderstorms are also a regular occurrence and can pop up quickly, especially west and north of the city in areas more prone to the "lake breeze front" or "lake breeze thunderstorms" phenomenon, in which intense, sharply defined squall lines develop quickly on summer afternoons amplified by localized wind patterns between the Great Lakes.Lake Breeze Weather These storms sometimes, but not always move into the city causing localized flooding resulting from downpours with high rainfall amounts, intense lightning but less often severe winds knocking down trees and powerlines.
Scyllarus arctus may reach up to long, although sizes of are more typical. It is reddish-brown in colour, with a dark brown spot in the centre of each abdominal somite, although this is not sharply defined. The pereiopods have a dark blue ring around each segment. It can be told apart from its close relative Scyllarus pygmaeus, which lives sympatrically with S. arctus, chiefly by its larger size, but also by other features such as the shape of a tubercle on the last thoracic sternite; this is flattened in S. arctus, but conical in S. pygmaeus.
Ackery P.R. (1975) A guide to the genera and species of Parnassiinae (Lepidoptera:Papilionidae). Bull. Br. Mus. nat. Hist. (Ent.) 31, 4 pdf P. apollonius is recognizable especially by the sharply defined black submarginal spots of both wings; moreover, in males there is hardly a distinct greyish vitreous marginal band, the edge being however a little more sparsely scaled with white than the disc and only anteriorly shaded with grey. Arrangement of spots as in the allied species; three costal spots beyond the cell, the central one being usually vestigial, the proximal or the distal one or both centred with red, the hindmarginal spot rarely quite black.
A large rose garden (with more than 400 bushes (there are only a few remnants of roses in this area.) of Floribunda, Grandiflora and Rugosa varieties), broken into four sections, surrounds a central, fish-filled lily pond. (No roses exist in this area, the central pond has a large fountain in it, no fish or lilies exist.) The English Garden is open free of charge to the public every day of the year. The Formal Garden, located at the southeast park entrance, was designed in 1907 by Frederick Todd as part of the original park. It features flower beds in sharply defined geometric shapes that stand out from the grassy areas.
During this phase, Hagibis maintained a pinhole eye across, encircled by a highly compact and sharply-defined eyewall. The rate of intensification was among the fastest observed in the Western Pacific. According to the JMA, Hagibis reached its peak intensity at 09:00 UTC on 7 October with a minimum pressure of 915 mbar (hPa; 27.02 inHg) and 10-minute sustained winds of 195 km/h (120 mph); Hagibis would maintain this intensity for 72 hours. The JTWC classified Hagibis as a super typhoon early on 7 October, and later assessed peak 1-minute sustained winds of as Hagibis passed just south of Anatahan in the Northern Mariana Islands.
The forewings are dark fuscous, mixed with blackish and with dull ochreous markings. There is a moderately broad outwardly oblique fascia, anteriorly edged with fuscous, from just beneath the costa at one-fifth to the dorsum at about one-quarter continued along the dorsum to the middle. There are also three or four apical spots, sometimes confluent into two, as well as a small reddish-ochreous or ferruginous patch, beyond the posterior end of the cell, edged above and below with a small spot of ochreous white. A sharply defined black dot is found in the middle of the patch, sometimes edged with whitish.
Tycho is a relatively young crater, with an estimated age of 108 million years (Ma), based on analysis of samples of the crater ray recovered during the Apollo 17 mission. This age initially suggested that the impactor may have been a member of the Baptistina family of asteroids, but as the composition of the impactor is unknown this remained conjecture. However, this possibility was ruled out by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer in 2011, as it was discovered that the Baptistina family was produced much later than expected, having formed approximately 80 million years ago. The crater is sharply defined, unlike older craters that have been degraded by subsequent impacts.
The impact of a meteorite or comet is today widely accepted as the main reason for the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. As with other older geologic periods, the rock beds of the Cretaceous are well identified but the exact age of the system's base is uncertain by a few million years. There is not yet a globally-defined lower stratigraphic boundary representing the start of the period. However, the top of the system is sharply defined, being placed at an iridium-rich layer found worldwide that is believed to be associated with the Chicxulub impact crater, with its boundaries circumscribing parts of the Yucatán Peninsula and into the Gulf of Mexico.
These include the relatively long anteroposterior facial length of the premaxilla, the elongate and strongly anteromedially directed dorsomedial process of the premaxilla, and the sharply defined and elevated margin of the perinarial fossa. There are differences between the two taxa such as differences in the relative thickness of dorsal osteoderms and the absence of a denticulate mesial carina on the first premaxillary tooth in Peirosaurus, but not in Uberabasuchus. However, these characters are considered to be minor and their taxonomic value may be individually variable. As postcranial materials of both Peirosaurus and Uberabasuchus are known but are not yet formally described, they are tentatively considered to be valid taxa.
Shell moderately thick, slightly translucent; surface glossy above and often strongly glossy below. Ground-colour pale brown throughout, or whitish beneath; upperside nearly always with brown to blackish-brown markings that are very variable in extent, but form sharply defined bands on only a minority of shells, consisting instead of interrupted bands or rows of irregular blotches, often with whitish rib crests; underside also with very variable dark markings, often in several thin interrupted bands; underside some- times mainly dark brown. Transverse ribs on upperside of shell ± regular on higher whorls of spire, becoming weak or partly absent on body whorl; on underside generally weaker. Xeroplexa arrabidensis Serra da Arrábida.
When Lekima was tracking along the southwestern periphery of a deep-layered subtropical ridge late on the same day, JTWC upgraded the system to a super typhoon with category 5 strength on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale, as an anticyclone was providing very favourable dual-channel outflow. Early on October 23, JMA reported that Typhoon Lekima had reached peak intensity, with 10-minute maximum sustained winds at 115 knots (215 km/h, 130 mph) and atmospheric pressure at . Since then, the typhoon has maintained its peak intensity for over one day, with a larger and sharply defined eye surrounded by a thick eyewall of deep convection.
The degree to which the chain was affected by the erosion depended mainly on the structure of the terrain, which explains the diversity in the topography of the area. The topography of Sarek, similar to that of Kebnekaise, is divided into sharply defined zones, particularly in respect to the two neighbouring national parks. This is mainly due to the existence of diabase and diorite dikes which are more resistant to erosion. The park is intersected by a tangle of dikes created 608 million years ago, an era that probably corresponds with the first appearance of the rift during the formation of the Iapetus ocean.
The forewings are white, somewhat sprinkled with dark fuscous and with the costal edge ochreous-tinged. There are slight dark fuscous costal marks at one-fifth and before the middle and a rounded-triangular dark fuscous blotch darker and more sharply defined on the upper half, extending along the dorsum from one-sixth to beyond the middle, and reaching two-thirds across the wing. There is also a broad rather dark fuscous fascia from three-fourths of the costa to the tornus, enclosing two pale ochreous costal dots, the anterior edge undefined, concave, the posterior edge sharper and straight. A dark fuscous terminal line is extended around the apex.
One of the visually evident features the renderer included is a penumbra in the shadowing (soft edges), by using shadow maps. In contrast, id Tech 4, which featured volume-based shadows, had very sharply defined shadows. Numerous other advanced graphical effects such as various materials for lighting, high dynamic range rendering- centric effects, bloom, crepuscular rays (volumetric lighting), radiosity, soft particles, pixel shader effects, alpha to coverage, post processing, Screen Space Reflection, dynamic water surfaces, procedural animation, cloth simulation, depth of field, and motion blur, are contained. Multi-threaded processing on the CPU is done for many of its tasks, including rendering, game logic, AI, physics, and sound processing.
Retrieved July 7, 2017.Moth Photographers Group at Mississippi State University The wingspan is 20–24 mm. The coloration and pattern of the forewings are very similar to Gnorimoschema gallaesolidaginis, with the rather sharply-defined basal light area extending along the dorsum and spreading out over the apical third of the wing, and with the large costal chocolate-colored area as in this species, but with ill-defined blackish markings on the dorsal edge near base, and with irregular, longitudinal blackish markings in the interior and apical part of the dark costal area, not found in G. gallaesolidaginis. The hindwings are light ochreous-fuscous.
Before him on Tiananmen Square, honor guards and members of patriotic organizations are assembled in orderly ranks, with some holding banners. Qianmen, the gate at the south end of the square, is visible, as is Yongdingmen gate (seen to the left of Mao). Beyond the old city walls that at the time enclosed the square (they were torn down in the 1950s), the city of Beijing is visible, and in green is represented the nation of China, with those further scenes under bright sunlight and sharply defined clouds. October 1 had been an overcast day in Beijing; Dong took artistic license with the weather.
Explosive intensification then ensued over the following 36 hours as the eye became sharply defined, and Jelawat attained its peak intensity later that morning, with estimated 10-minute sustained winds of 195 km/h (120 mph) and a central pressure of 915 hPa (27.02 inHg). At the same time, the JTWC assessed it as peaking with 1-minute sustained winds of 240 km/h (150 mph), making it a Category 4 super typhoon. Immediately after peaking in intensity, Jelawat began weakening rapidly, due to a sharp increase in wind shear and dry air, and the storm fell below typhoon strength late on March 31.
Roman Dictator Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus In addition to holding a military command and carrying out the actions decreed by the Senate, a dictator could summon the Senate or convene one of the legislative assemblies of the Roman people. The full extent of the dictatorial power was considerable, but not unlimited. It was circumscribed by the conditions of a dictator's appointment, as well as by the evolving traditions of Roman law, and to a considerable degree depended on the dictator's ability to work together with other magistrates. The precise limitations of this power were not sharply defined, but subject to debate, contention, and speculation throughout Roman history.Lintott, p. 112.
The main urban area is to the north of the Worcester Road and the Link Common that marks a sharply defined boundary on the south of the settlement between the railway station and the area's western limit at Newtown Road in Link Top. The urban development takes a gentle transition through the neighbourhoods of Upper Howsell and Lower Howsell to the farms and communities of Leigh Sinton in the north and Newland and Madresfield in the west. To the south along the main axis of Pickersleigh Road, an unbroken built up area merges seamlessly into Barnards Green, a suburb of the former independent town of Great Malvern.
In these works, still- life objects overlap and intermingle barely maintaining identifiable two- dimensional forms, losing individual surface texture, and merging into the background—achieving goals nearly opposite to those of traditional still life.Ebert-Schifferer, p. 338 Fernand Léger's still life introduced the use of abundant white space and coloured, sharply defined, overlapping geometrical shapes to produce a more mechanical effect.David Piper, The Illustrated Library of Art, Portland House, New York, 1986, p. 643, Rejecting the flattening of space by Cubists, Marcel Duchamp and other members of the Dada movement, went in a radically different direction, creating 3-D "ready-made" still-life sculptures.
Three garments form accents of warm colour, the brown dress of one of the ladies, the orange fur of the Lieutenant's collar and the blood- red hose of the executioner. The colour of Lady Jane's red-gold hair is picked up in the straw beneath the block. Against the darkness, Lady Jane, with her pallid flesh, her white bodice and satin petticoat, makes a splash of light. The artist seizes the eye of the viewer by placing the most intense patches of white on Jane's blindfold and the area of her skirt just between her outstretched hand and the sharply defined edge of the block.
Fruit-bodies are mostly epigenous (above ground), rarely hypogeous (underground), more or less spherical in shape, without a stem or with an irregular root-like stem. The peridium (outer wall) is mostly simple, rarely 2-layered, firm, rarely thin, membranous, breaking open irregularly or in lobes or decaying, revealing the gleba. The gleba typically has sharply defined basidia-bearing sectors, which are partitioned from one another by sterile veins, and in which the basidia are regularly scattered through the tissue. The gleba, which is brown or white in young specimens, turns dark purple to brownish purple in age, and crumbles to a powder of spores and disintegrating tissues at maturity.
X-ray of a giant-cell bone tumor in the head of the fourth metacarpal of the left hand On X-ray, giant-cell tumors (GCTs) are lytic/lucent lesions that have an epiphyseal location and grow to the articular surface of the involved bone. Radiologically the tumors may show characteristic 'soap bubble' appearance. They are distinguishable from other bony tumors in that GCTs usually have a nonsclerotic and sharply defined border. About 5% of giant-cell tumors metastasize, usually to a lung, which may be benign metastasis, when the diagnosis of giant-cell tumor is suspected, a chest X-ray or computed tomography may be needed.
Werner Heisenberg formulated the uncertainty principle at Niels Bohr's institute in Copenhagen, while working on the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics. Werner Heisenberg and Niels Bohr In 1925, following pioneering work with Hendrik Kramers, Heisenberg developed matrix mechanics, which replaced the ad hoc old quantum theory with modern quantum mechanics. The central premise was that the classical concept of motion does not fit at the quantum level, as electrons in an atom do not travel on sharply defined orbits. Rather, their motion is smeared out in a strange way: the Fourier transform of its time dependence only involves those frequencies that could be observed in the quantum jumps of their radiation.
A sumptuously decorated pentagonal spinet from 1577 by Annibale dei Rossi; 49 keys The pentagonal spinet was not a spinet in the sense given above, but rather a virginal; its strings were parallel to the keyboard. Typically, the pentagonal spinet was more compact than other types of virginals, as the pentagon shape arose from lopping off the corners of the original rectangular virginal design. More generally, the word spinet was not always very sharply defined in former times, particularly in its French and Italian cognate forms épinette and spinetta. Thus, for example, when Bartolomeo Cristofori invented a new kind of virginals in 1688, he called it the "spinetta ovale", "oval spinet".
A government paper published pictures of four men that were killed during the military operations that they claim were downloaded from Palestinian websites. The men are identified in the different pictures as both policemen and members of al-Qassam Brigades. Israeli Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center (ITIC) alleged that the distinction between the internal security forces and Hamas military wing is not sharply defined and cites Gaza police officials who said that police were instructed to fight the enemy in case of an invasion into the Gaza Strip. Many security force members were reported to "moonlight" with the militant group, Izzidin al-Qassam Brigades.
By timing the total round trip time from broadcast to reception and then dividing by twice the speed of light (the signal travels to the aircraft and back again) the distance to the aircraft could be determined. This was essentially identical to radar, with the exception that the transponder greatly amplified the signals for the return journey, which aided accuracy by providing strong, sharply defined signal pulses. A practical problem was using these range measurements to guide a bomber towards its target. In the case of Y-Gerät, a single beam was used that produced a natural path for the bomber to fly along.
Only certain in the known middle dorsals, the (ridge on posterior surface of spine) extends below the spine itself. Like more basal sauropods Europasaurus and Euhelopus, the dorsal vertebrae have a notch on the top of the posterior centrum face, giving it a heart-shaped appearance, contrasting more derived titanosaurs or Giraffatitan which possess flattened centra. Although differing in centrum shape, Opisthocoelicaudia and Diamantinasaurus are the only titanosaurs to share a ventral keel set within a sharply defined depression under the dorsals. Dorsal prezygapophyses are linked to the spine by a , which is absent in Opisthocoelicaudia and most dorsals of Rapetosaurus, and the found in Diamantinasaurus is also absent in most derived titanosaurs.
The white-browed tit (Poecile superciliosus, formerly Parus superciliosus) is a species of bird in the tit family Paridae. It is endemic to the mountain forests of central China and Tibet. It is 13.5–14 cm long, with a weight of 10–12 g. The plumage pattern is very similar to that of the western North American mountain chickadee P. gambeli (of which it has on occasion been considered a subspecies, despite its being on a different continent), differing in the breast and cheeks being rusty brown, not white, and having a longer and more sharply defined white eyebrow; the back is also a richer brown, not greyish-brown (del Hoyo et al. 2007).
The principle behind photoionization microscopy is to study the spatial distribution of electrons ejected from an atom in a situation in which the De Broglie wavelength becomes large enough to be observed on a macroscopic scale. In photoionization microscopy experiments, an atom in an electric field is ionized by a laser with sharply defined frequency, the electron is drawn toward a position- sensitive detector, and the current is measured as a function of position. The application of an electric field during photoionization allows confining the electron flux along one coordinate. Multiple classical paths lead from the atom to any point in the classically allowed region on the detector, and waves travelling along these paths produce an interference pattern.
The wingspan is 15–20 mm. The forewings are snow-white with a broad fuscous streak from the base along the costa to one-third, which then proceeds a fuscous fascia, slightly outwardly oblique, to the inner margin before the middle, its anterior edge sharply defined, the posterior edge suffused. There is a darker dot on the fold on the posterior edge of this fascia and a broad fuscous fascia from the costa near the apex, narrowing abruptly to a point at the anal angle. Between the two fasciae are some obscure fuscous markings in the costal portion of the disc and there is a fuscous spot on the hindmargin below the middle.
The forewings are bronzy brown, sometimes partially suffused with pale ochreous towards the dorsum and with the markings variable in development, dark brown partially mixed with blackish on the margins and the dorsum, irregularly edged whitish, between them some blue-leaden mixture. There is a moderately broad basal fascia, with the edge oblique. There is a moderate less oblique antemedian fascia, its posterior edge forming a sharply defined irregular upwards-oblique pointed projection in the disc and there is also a flattened-triangular blotch extending on the costa from the middle to three-fourths, the apex blackish, narrowly separated by ochreous whitish from a fasciate blotch along the upper half of the termen. The hindwings are dark grey.
Characteristic features of the tyrannosauroid pelvis include a concave notch at the upper front end of the ilium, a sharply defined vertical ridge on the outside surface of the ilium, extending upwards from the acetabulum (hip socket), and a huge "boot" on the end of the pubis, more than half as long as the shaft of the pubis itself. These features are found in all known tyrannosauroids, including basal members Guanlong and Dilong. The pubis is not known in Aviatyrannis or Stokesosaurus but both show typical tyrannosauroid characters in the ilium. The hindlimbs of all tyrannosauroids, like most theropods, had four toes, although the first toe (the hallux) did not contact the ground.

LED backlights are often dimmed by applying pulse-width modulation to the supply current, switching the backlight off and on more quickly than the eye can perceive. If the dimming-pulse frequency is too low or the user is sensitive to flicker, this may cause discomfort and eyestrain (similar to the flicker of CRT displays at lower refresh rates). This can be tested by a user simply by waving their hand in front of the screen; if it appears to have sharply- defined edges as it moves, the backlight is pulsing at a fairly low frequency. If the hand appears blurry, the display either has a continuously-illuminated backlight or is operating at a frequency too high to perceive.
The tidal force is proportional to the average density inside the radius of the ring, or to the mass of the planet divided by the radius of the ring cubed. It is also inversely proportional to the square of the orbital period of the ring. Sometimes rings will have "shepherd" moons, small moons that orbit near the inner or outer edges of rings or within gaps in the rings. The gravity of shepherd moons serves to maintain a sharply defined edge to the ring; material that drifts closer to the shepherd moon's orbit is either deflected back into the body of the ring, ejected from the system, or accreted onto the moon itself.
The crown is brown on juveniles rather than blackish as in adults. The tail is similar to that of the adult but more brownish and sometimes shows an additional fourth band. The juvenile has more pale white to cream base color showing than older birds, with variable dusky throat striping and mid-brown streaks, which appear as sharply defined from about the lower throat to the lower breast. The juvenile may have brown to black spots or bars on the thighs with thin black streaks mostly ending at the belly and conspicuous white crissum and undertail coverts. Juveniles can tend to appear more “disheveled” and less compact than adults in feather composition.
As a candidate mechanism for long-term memory, LTP has since been studied intensively, and a great deal has been learned about it. However, the complexity and variety of the intracellular signalling cascades that can trigger LTP is acknowledged as preventing a more complete understanding.Malenka & Bear, 2004 The hippocampus is a particularly favorable site for studying LTP because of its densely packed and sharply defined layers of neurons, but similar types of activity-dependent synaptic change have also been observed in many other brain areas.Cooke & Bliss, 2006 The best-studied form of LTP has been seen in CA1 of the hippocampus and occurs at synapses that terminate on dendritic spines and use the neurotransmitter glutamate.
Promoting the music of the present has always been one of the publisher's guidelines, along with the cultivation of the masters of the past. In 1933, together with Richard Baum, he founded the Kasseler Musiktage, initially a gathering of amateur musicians, then after the war soon an event with a sharply defined content profile that attracted many interested people to Kassel. Between 1933 and 1945, as director of the Bärenreiter publishing house, he continued to publish (also contemporary) Christian music, but also published national sozialistic songs and choral works, among them an SS- Treuelied,Fred K. Prieberg: Handbuch Deutsche Musiker 1933-1945, Kiel 2004, . as well as choral books with system-conform prefaces.
A Madí work is non-figurative and non-representational; it has a cut-out or irregularly-shaped form, which takes away the viewer's perception of spatial depth that a rectangular frame provides; its colors are flat and sharply defined; it is often three-dimensional and sometimes articulated and/or mechanical; and it is playful in spirit. Madí artists were concerned with creating artworks that were autonomous with functions that naturally transcend the physical features that constitute the work. Introducing elements of transformation and ambiguity were techniques commonly employed by these artists to avoid representation as well as avoid the fixity of representations. In painted works, some artists would intentionally lower the legibility of the design.
Seen from about , Earth appears as a tiny dot within deep space: the blueish-white speck almost halfway up the light band on the right. The technological developments of the latter half of the 20th century are widely considered to have altered the public's perception of the Earth. Before space flight, the popular image of Earth was of a green world. Science fiction artist Frank R. Paul provided perhaps the first image of a cloudless blue planet (with sharply defined land masses) on the back cover of the July 1940 issue of Amazing Stories, a common depiction for several decades thereafter. The first photograph ever taken of an "Earthrise," by astronaut Frank Borman on Apollo 8 in late 1968.
In Anostoma depressum the external reproductive pore, located on the right side of the head, leads into a small atrium with which the penis, hermaphroditic duct, and seminal receptacle attach. The first named is a heavy, muscular organ, accompanied by the usual slender vas deferens, their union being effected at some distance from the distal end of the penis, which thus forms a flagellum. The penis and flagellum are both sharply defined and appear to be without muscular attachments, though bound to the body wall by delicate connective tissue strands. In the neighborhood of the outer opening, however, the penis sheath affords attachment for three or four slender muscle bands that Heath inclined to regard as penis retractors.
There is a similar connection between the female dwarf and the figure of Velázquez himself, both of whom look towards the viewer from similar angles, creating a visual tension. The face of Velázquez is dimly lit by light that is reflected, rather than direct. For this reason his features, though not as sharply defined, are more visible than those of the dwarf who is much nearer the light source. This appearance of a total face, full-on to the viewer, draws the attention, and its importance is marked, tonally, by the contrasting frame of dark hair, the light on the hand and brush, and the skilfully placed triangle of light on the artist's sleeve, pointing directly to the face.
Version of the arms of Barcelona with two bars on the ancient main façade of the City Hall Before the Royal grant of 1345, that set the number of paletts to four, where periods when four pallets were alternated with three or two. Later the shield charged with two bars was recurrent source of discussion as a proper variant of Barcelona. In 1996 was adopted a monochrome logotype as official emblem of Barcelona, a rhombus or lozenge with the cross two bars impaled, sharply defined edges and without the crown. A secondary version, for ceremonial use and shown in the seal of the city with four pallets, quartered, and a former royal crown.
Significant gender inequities persisted throughout the period, as women typically had more limited life-choices, access to employment and trade, and legal rights than men. After the Norman invasion, the position of women in society changed. The rights and roles of women became more sharply defined, in part as a result of the development of the feudal system and the expansion of the English legal system; some women benefited from this, while others lost out. The rights of widows were formally laid down in law by the end of the twelfth century, clarifying the right of free women to own property, but this did not necessarily prevent women from being forcibly remarried against their wishes.
The forewings are yellow ochreous, sometimes obscurely streaked with whitish ochreous between the veins, the veins more reddish ochreous or brownish ochreous. There is a straight, slender, reddish-brown streak from the middle of the base to the disc at two-fifths, terminating in a small blackish spot, cloudy beneath, above sharply defined and sometimes margined with an ochreous-whitish streak. There is a more or less distinct reddish-brown streak from the disc before the middle to the costa before the apex, terminating in some black scales and there are two black dots transversely placed in the disc at two-thirds, as well as some black scales on the hindmargin. The hindwings are light grey.
The forewings are dark fuscous, very closely strewn with very elongate whitish scales. All veins and extreme the costal margin are slenderly whitish and there is a clear dark fuscous streak above the cell from the base to before the middle, then obscurely continued between the veins to the costa before the apex. There is a dark fuscous-streak beneath the cell almost from the base to the middle and a sharply defined dark fuscous streak from the middle of the disc to the hindmargin beneath the apex. There is also a slender dark fuscous streak along the inner margin from near the base to the middle of the hindmargin, broader on the anal angle and then attenuated, sharply interrupted by the veins.
The marsh is a re-constructed and managed wetland, designed for the creation of a waterfowl breeding and migratory habitat. Water levels in the marsh are carefully controlled. It is common during wet years (when waterfowl have an abundance of alternative nesting sites) for the water level in one or more of the compartments to be lowered for the summer, creating an extensive area of dried mudflats. This drying and later reflooding promotes the growth of emergent marsh plants such as bulrush and cattail, and therefore maintains the vegetation cover of the marsh; otherwise, the natural tendency would be for the marsh to become over several years simply a shallow lake, with a sharply defined shoreline and little nesting cover.
As a reflection of categories of sexuality so sharply defined by the government and society at large, lesbian subculture developed extremely rigid gender roles between women, particularly among the working class in the U.S. and Canada. Although many municipalities had enacted laws against cross-dressing, some women would socialize in bars as butches: dressed in men's clothing and mirroring traditional masculine behavior. Others wore traditionally feminine clothing and assumed a more diminutive role as femmes. Butch and femme modes of socialization were so integral within lesbian bars that women who refused to choose between the two would be ignored, or at least unable to date anyone, and butch women becoming romantically involved with other butch women or femmes with other femmes was unacceptable.
Upperside dark umber brown. Forewing with a large, white- centred, fulvous-ringed black median ocellus and a white-centred preapical much smaller black spot. Hindwing uniform, a post-median series of from two to four white-centred fulvous-ringed black ocelli, sub-equal and smaller than the posterior ocellus on the forewing. Underside: ground colour similar, but irrorated (sprinkled) with obscure transverse striae of a deeper brown; the terminal margins of both forewings and hindwings very broadly paler; the dark basal portion of the wings sharply defined by a very dark brown line; a postmedian series on both wings of rather small white-centred fulvous-ringed black ocelli—two on the forewing, a median and a preapical; seven, placed in a slight curve, on the hindwing.
Christian, Jewish, Hindu and Muslim followers have historically been aligned with ethnicities (and later nations) speaking different languages and having different cultures that arise on the basis of the languages that followers of each religion historically favoured: (Latin and Greek, Hebrew, Sanskrit and Arabic, respectively). The sources of religious differentiation are contested among sociologists and among anthropologists, as much as between the faith groups themselves. The line between a well-defined religious sect and a discrete ethnicity cannot always be sharply defined. Sects that most observers would accept as constituting a separate ethnicity usually have, as a minimum, a firm set of rules related to maintenance of endogamy, censuring those who 'marry out' or who fail to raise their children in the proper faith.
Paxton and several other Bostonian artists were inspired by Johannes Vermeer. The Metropolitan Museum of Art says of Paxton's Tea Leaves (1909) in their collection: Paxton employed a technique where only one area in his compositions was entirely in focus, while the rest was somewhat blurred, something he called "binocular vision" and credited to Vermeer. He began to employ this system in his own work, including The New Necklace, where only the gold beads are sharply defined while the rest of the objects in the composition have softer, blurrier edges. Paxton is one of the key figures in the Boston School of painting and a co-founder of The Guild of Boston Artists with Frank Weston Benson and Edmund Charles Tarbell.
Shrdak carpets (Turkmenistan) use a form of this method wherein two pieces of contrasting color are cut out with the same pattern, the cut-outs are then switched, fitting one into the other, which makes a sharply defined and colorful patterned piece. In order to strengthen the joints of a mosaic style felt, feltmakers often add a backing layer of fleece that is felted along with the other components. Feltmakers can differ in their orientation to this added layer—where some will lay it on top of the design before felting and others will place the design on top of the strengthening layer. The process of felting was adapted to the lifestyles of the different cultures in which it flourished.
Up to 23:00, there seemed to be three periods of brilliant display: the first, and perhaps the best, at 19:45 when a bright red glow in the north-north-east was traversed by many sharply defined green and white shafts, at 20:30 especially in the east; and again at 21:45, when diffuse and rapidly fluctuating green streamers appeared between north-east and north-west, directed towards the Zenith. Thereafter, the luminosity decreased, but as late as 23:00 a broad green arc stretching from north-west to north-east was still clearly visible. About midnight, a fourth display began with red streamers in the north-west, which extended until a broad red band was formed passing through the zenith to the north-east.
The forewings are ochreous fuscous with a broad shining white sharply defined median streak from the base to beyond five-sixths, the apex acute, the lower margin prominent beyond the middle of the wing and sending a fine branch along the fold almost to the tornus. There is a narrow shining, white subdorsal streak from the base to the tornus and a whitish line along the costa from about one-fourth to the middle, then obliquely to above the apex of the median streak. An oblique white striga is found from the costa at about three-fourths to near the termen, the apex leaden grey. There is also a suffused leaden-grey mark along the upper part of the termen.
Subsequent imaging showed there were no objects of 20 Jupiter masses or greater between the disk and the brown dwarf, leading the researchers Neuhäuser and colleagues to postulate that the brown dwarf had an eccentric orbit – if 200 AU were its furthest distance from the primary, then it could come as close as 71 AU with an average distance of 136 AU. Eta Telescopii is in fact a triple star system; further away, separated by 7', is the common proper motion companion HD 181327, a yellow-white main sequence star of spectral type F6V and apparent magnitude 7.0, which has its own debris disk. This disk has a sharply-defined inner edge at 31 AU, indicating a likely planet between 19 and 31 AU from the star.
On the distal side of the shadowy band, near the costa, there is an elongate whitish double spot, above and below the middle of the anterior median branch two small more indistinct light spots, and near the apex a small rounded white spot with a white dot below it. Both wings have a small indistinct ocellus in the anal area. The hindwing bears a dark edge to the outer margin and a feebly marked submarginal row of spots. Beneath paler, the basal half of both wings somewhat darkened, these spots with sharply defined S-shaped edges, otherwise the light spots as above, the ocelli with blue centre, at the distal margin of both wings a narrow dark shadowy band and indistinct submarginal spots.
The rights and roles of women became more sharply defined, in part as a result of the development of the feudal system and the expansion of the English legal system; some women benefited from this, while others lost out.; The rights of widows were formally laid down in law by the end of the twelfth century, clarifying the right of free women to own property, but this did not necessarily prevent women from being forcibly remarried against their wishes. The growth of governmental institutions under a succession of bishops reduced the role of queens and their households in formal government. Married or widowed noblewomen remained significant cultural and religious patrons and played an important part in political and military events, even if chroniclers were uncertain if this was appropriate behaviour.
Central Otago is a land of extremes: it is the coldest, driest part of New Zealand. The seasons are sharply defined: summers are hot and low in humidity; winter mornings are often misty, the days cloudless and windless and the nights freezing. Alexandra, for example, has the lowest average annual rainfall (340mm) recorded anywhere in New Zealand, is the least windy and has 148 frosts annually (only Lake Tekapo, with 149, has more). Ophir, 27 km away, holds the record for the lowest air temperature recorded - minus 21.6 deg C in mid-1995 - but it also held the highest reading (35.2 deg C in 1959) until 42.4 deg C was recorded at Rangiora, in Canterbury in 1973. Spring warms the soil and fruit tree blossom dominates the district’s orchard areas.
Prince Wilhelm of Sweden. Visited Guatemala in 1920, during the time Estrada Cabrera was overthrown and wrote his observations in his book Between two continents, notes from a journey in Central America, 1920, maybe the most objective account of the situation. In 1920, prince Wilhelm of Sweden visited Guatemala and made a very objective description of both Guatemalan society and Estrada Cabrera government in his book Between two continents, notes from a journey in Central America, 1920. The prince explained the dynamics of Guatemalan society at the time pointing out that even though it called itself a "Republic", Guatemala had three sharply defined classes: # Criollos: a minority comprised originally by ancient families descendants of the Spaniards that conquered Central America and that by 1920 comprised both political parties in the country.
In colour prints, contours of most colour areas are sharply defined, usually by the linework. The aesthetic of flat areas of colour contrasts with the modulated colours expected in Western traditions and with other prominent contemporary traditions in Japanese art patronized by the upper class, such as in the subtle monochrome ink brushstrokes of zenga brush painting or tonal colours of the Kanō school of painting. Wabi-sabi aesthetic in a 16th-century tea bowl The colourful, ostentatious, and complex patterns, concern with changing fashions, and tense, dynamic poses and compositions in ukiyo-e are in striking contrast with many concepts in traditional Japanese aesthetics. Prominent amongst these, wabi-sabi favours simplicity, asymmetry, and imperfection, with evidence of the passage of time; and shibui values subtlety, humility, and restraint.
In Los Angeles, Kisch enrolled at the Otis College of Art and Design where she studied alongside artists such as Bas Jan Ader and Barry Le Va and went on to attain both a BFA and an MFA in 1969. While at Otis she embarked on a series of hard-edge paintings, described by the critic Naomi Baker in the San Diego Evening Tribune as "geometric paintings, vivid and sharply defined with color areas and shapes." Beginning in 1971, while living in Venice Beach, Kisch's work became increasingly sculptural, described by the critic Melinda Terbell Wortz in Artweek in 1974 as "more like wall sculptures than paintings." Her early sculptures were observed to be in a post-Minimalist vein and were compared to works by Eva Hesse, Bruce Nauman, even Constantin Brancusi.
The Jews in France, whether they were Israélites or immigrant Juifs, had begun the occupation discouraged and isolated, cut off and forced to become "absent from the places they lived in. Now, as the threat of absence become brutally literal, their choices were more sharply defined, more urgent even than for other people in France." As an example of the "differing fates" open to French Jews from 1942 onward, Ousby used the three- part dedication to the memoir Jacques Adler wrote in 1985: the first part dedicated to his father, who was killed at Auschwitz in 1942; the second to the French family who sheltered his mother and sister, who survived the Occupation; and the third to the members of the Jewish resistance group Adler joined later in 1942.
Forewings and hindwings with subterminal and terminal pale lines. Underside pale brown, much paler in female than in male; the basal area of the wings irrorated with transverse brown striae up to a common transverse inwardly sharply-defined discal white band; beyond this, a series of ocelli similar to the ocelli on the upperside, four on the front wing, the median ocellus being the largest, seven on the hindwing, the third from the tornus and the apical ocelli being the largest; terminal margins of wings slightly purpurescent, crossed by an inner and an outer subterminal and a terminal slender dark brown line, the subterminal lines being more or less zigzag and sinuous. Cilia of both forewing and hindwing pale. Antennae, head, thorax and abdomen brown; antennas ochraceous at apex.
Behind Deep Blue: Building the Computer that Defeated the World Chess Champion, Princeton University Press. The groundbreaking paper on computer chess, "Programming a Computer for Playing Chess", was published in 1950 by Shannon. He wrote: > The chess machine is an ideal one to start with, since: (1) the problem is > sharply defined both in allowed operations (the moves) and in the ultimate > goal (checkmate); (2) it is neither so simple as to be trivial nor too > difficult for satisfactory solution; (3) chess is generally considered to > require "thinking" for skillful play; a solution of this problem will force > us either to admit the possibility of a mechanized thinking or to further > restrict our concept of "thinking"; (4) the discrete structure of chess fits > well into the digital nature of modern computers.Shannon, Claude E. Charles Demuth, I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold, 1928, Metropolitan Museum of Art Influenced by Cubism and Futurism, Precisionism took for its main themes industrialisation and the modernization of the American landscape, the structures of which were depicted in precise, sharply defined geometrical forms. Precisionist artists considered themselves strictly American and some were reluctant to acknowledge their European artistic influences.Metropolitan Museum of Art Yet it was readily apparent at the time that the fracturing of planes in many Precisionist paintings originates in the Cubism of Picasso and Léger; similarly, Precisionist renderings of shafts of light as rigidly drawn "lines of force" is a clear borrowing from Futurism. In the end, Precisionism was less about pure originality of expression and more about an energetic American use and amalgamation of certain European modernist techniques.
When Sibilla is first introduced among the other dancers on stage, a partial blurring of the image places her out-of-focus while those around her are sharply defined, an effect repeated in her subsequent dance to suggest that she herself is not fully focussed on her surroundings because her mind is preoccupied with the plight of her son. Distortion of close-up images of customers in the cabaret reflect their intoxication and lust. A similar technique is used later to introduce a note of visual horror into the scene when Joao tries to rape Sibilla. A different use of optical distortion in the scenes of Hedwick at work in the Alhambra shows how the actual settings of his paintings are transformed in the painter's imagination.Richard Abel, French cinema: the first wave 1915-1929.
The Chairman of Ways and Means said it was impossible that the Bill could be considered by an ordinary Private Bill Committee, and suggested that it should be referred to a Hybrid Committee, where "persons might be examined who have not those sharply-defined interests which are usually represented before a Private Committee. Such a Committee might consider this question through all its bearings, public as well as private; and they might, at all events, lay down a principle for the guidance of the House in dealing with future questions connected with the water supply of populous districts." Only if this was promised could he vote for the Second Reading; other speakers followed his lead, and it was on this basis that the Bill then passed its Second Reading.
The whip-like tail bears two very slender stinging spines on the upper surface; it is fairly broad and flattened at the base and tapers evenly past the stings. Behind the stings are well-developed dorsal and ventral fin folds; the dorsal fold is smaller than the ventral fold, which is deep and short relative to the tail's total length. The only dermal denticles are four or five small, closely spaced thorns in a midline row behind the spiracles. The upper surface of the disc is yellowish brown, deepening in color towards the margins, with numerous dark orange and light blue spots; the orange spots are smaller, more sharply defined, and densest at the center of the disc, whereas the blue spots are larger, less well defined, and evenly distributed over the disc.
The long-term evolution of the virus may be influenced in that it may be a better evolutionarily stable strategy to generate a broad quasispecies with members of approximately equal fitness than to have a sharply defined 'most fit' single genotype (with mutational neighbours substantially less fit). This has been called 'survival of the flattest' - referring to the fitness profiles of the two strategies respectively. Over the long-term, a flatter fitness profile might better allow a quasispecies to exploit changes in selection pressure, analogous to the way sexual organisms use recombination to preserve diversity in a population. At least in simulations, a slower replicator can be shown to be able to outcompete a faster one in cases where it is more robust and the mutation rate is high.
De Havilland Memorial Stone near Seven Barrows Field and Beacon Hill from A34 View of Beacon Hill with the tomb of George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon Gravestone of George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon The hill fort on the top of the hill has never been systematically excavated, but the land and ditch are sharply defined and well preserved. The Beacon Hill camp, (scheduled ancient monument number 7) built around 1000 BC, was probably inhabited by around 2–3000 people according to calculations from similar camps. It is one of a number of hillforts, which are strung out along the north-facing scarp of the Hampshire Downs, overlooking the Kennet valley to the north. When originally built, these structures must have looked spectacular even from a distance as their white chalk ramparts caught the sun.
Such interfaces form vertical chemical gradients, i.e. vertical variations in chemical composition, which make different levels suitable for different types of bacteria and thus divide microbial mats into layers, which may be sharply defined or may merge more gradually into each other. A variety of microbes are able to transcend the limits of diffusion by using "nanowires" to shuttle electrons from their metabolic reactions up to two centimetres deep in the sediment – for example, electrons can be transferred from reactions involving hydrogen sulfide deeper within the sediment to oxygen in the water, which acts as an electron acceptor. The best-known types of microbial mat may be flat laminated mats, which form on approximately horizontal surfaces, and stromatolites, stubby pillars built as the microbes slowly move upwards to avoid being smothered by sediment deposited on them by water.
According to Wraight, it is not straightforward to determine what Cristofori's pianos sounded like, since the surviving instruments (see above) are either too decrepit to be played or have been extensively and irretrievably altered in later "restorations". However, in recent decades, a number of modern builders have made Cristofori replicas, and their collective experience, and particularly the recordings made on these instruments, has created an emerging view concerning the Cristofori piano sound. The sound of the Cristofori replicas is as close to the harpsichord as it is to the modern piano; this is to be expected given that their case construction and stringing are much closer to the harpsichord than to the piano. The note onsets are not as sharply defined as in a harpsichord, and the response of the instrument to the player's varying touch is clearly noticeable.
All these three lirations are orname ted with little tubercles or blunt spines, which are strongest on the highest thread, and there number about twenty-five on the body whorl, on the second thread there are about twenty-eight. The base, which is rather flatly arched, has round the outside a flat surface hardly deep enough to be called a furrow, defined on the inner side by a clear narrow line, within which the curve of the base rises a little and has some faint spirals. The edge of the umbilicus is sharply defined by a fine line, outside of which is a broad shallow furrow bordered externally by a slight spiral. There is another narrower furrow, the outer side of which is the most projecting part of the base, but beyond this is rather flat and has some obsolete spirals.
P. gamma Forewing purplish grey, with darker suffusion in places; the lines pale silvery edged on both sides with dark fuscous, the outer line indented on vein 2 and submedian fold, as in circumflexa; the oblique orbicular and the reniform conversely oblique and constricted in middle, both edged with silvery: the median area below middle blackish, containing a silvery gamma; the subterminal dentate and indented, preceded by a darker shade; hindwing brownish grey with darker veins and a broad blackish terminal border: aberrations due to difference in ground colour are ab. pallida Tutt, in which the ground colour is whitish grey, with the markings appearing darker and more sharply defined; ab. rufescens Tutt where it is yellowish red, with the gamma mark pale golden, also the lines and edges of stigmata, and the whole underside reddish: and ab. nigricans Spul.
Lighter or deeper yellow above, with well developed and sharply defined black marginal and submarginal markings and black middle spot on the forewing; the hindwing with reduced marginal marking, sometimes without any, the light-coloured middle spot being very feebly developed; upperside of forewing sometimes more or less dusted with black along the veins. Underside light yellow, with large black middle spot, and more or less developed black submarginal spots posteriorly on forewing; hindwing dusted with dark on the inner area, this scaling sometimes extended to the margin, the middle spot being whitish. The ground colour of the female is lighter, the black markings are less developed, being very diffuse especially at the distal margin of the forewing; the black middle spot, however, large. Beneath, the apex of the forewing bright yellow and the hindwing dusted with grey greenish.
Santschi (1914) initially associated Promyopias with Myopias, the latter a moderately sized genus widespread in the Oriental, Malesian and Austral regions, because of supposed overall similarities in the form of the mandible and clypeus. It now seems certain that these similarities are the result of convergence through the development of similar predatory behaviors and life styles in the two genera. Major characters of Myopias that differentiate it from Promyopias include: eyes usually present in worker (absent in one species); scape not flattened; mesonotum sharply defined; spiniform setae entirely absent from middle and hind tibiae and basitarsi; helcium located at base of first gastral segment; posterodorsal margin of helcium with a median emargination; prora an anteroventral tooth; stridulitrum present. During its history Promyopias has been regarded as a separate genus or as a subgenus of two other ponerine genera.
Magic realism may be literary work marked by the use of still, sharply defined, smoothly painted images of figures and objects depicted in a surrealistic manner. The themes and subjects are often imaginary, somewhat outlandish and fantastic and with a certain dream-like quality. Some of the characteristic features of this kind of fiction are the mingling and juxtaposition of the realistic and the fantastic or bizarre, skillful time shifts, convoluted and even labyrinthine narratives and plots, miscellaneous use of dreams, myths and fairy stories, expressionistic and even surrealistic description, arcane erudition, the element of surprise or abrupt shock, the horrific and the inexplicable. It has been applied, for instance, to the work of Jorge Luis Borges, author of Historia universal de la infamia (1935) is considered a bridge between modernism and postmodernism in world literature.
Very similar to Charaxes mycerina but antennae much darker, the blue scaling in the cell of the forewing denser and more extended, forewing with admarginal blue spots, band of hindwing of male not interrupted at R1. On the underside the cell-bar of forewing more straight, more obliquely placed, its upper end being only 1.5 mm. distant from base of R1, median bars also straighter, the bistre brown outer marginal band more sharply defined, the clay coloured area between it and the disco-postdiscal line divided by a band of bistre brown patches; median bar M2 SM2 straight or distally convex; costal median bar of hindwing 3 or 4 mm. more distal than bar C- SC2; the white borders of the bars of both wings much more prominent than in Charaxes mycerina; anal angle less produced.
Anatomical studies had shown that different sectors of the entorhinal cortex project to different levels of the hippocampus: the dorsal end of the EC projects to the dorsal hippocampus, the ventral end to the ventral hippocampus. This was relevant because several studies had shown that place cells in the dorsal hippocampus have considerably sharper place fields than cells from more ventral levels. Every study of entorhinal spatial activity prior to 2004, however, had made use of electrodes implanted near the ventral end of the EC. Accordingly, together with Marianne Fyhn, Sturla Molden and Menno Witter, the Mosers set out to examine spatial firing from the different dorsal-to-ventral levels of the entorhinal cortex. They found that in the dorsal part of medial entorhinal cortex (MEC), cells had sharply defined place fields like in the hippocampus but the cells fired at multiple locations.
Initially, Tilly maintains, Secher completed a thoughtful dissertation-style thesis about the revolutionary experience in his own village, La Chapelle-Basse-Mer, which lies near Nantes. In the published version of his thesis, he incorporated some of Tilly's own arguments: that conflicts within communities generalized into a region-wide confrontation of anti-revolutionary majority based in the countryside with a pro-revolutionary minority that had particular strength in the cities. The split formed with the application of the Civil Constitution of the Clergy and the oath to support it, in 1790–1792. From then, the local conflicts grew more sharply defined, over the choice between juring and non-juring priests. The conscription of March 1793, with the questionable exemption for Republican officials and National Guard members, broadened the anti-revolutionary coalition and brought the young men into action.Tilly, p. 60.
Lobate scarps are the most common structural landforms in the Bach region. Almost all have convex slope profiles, rounded crests, and steep, sharply defined lobes. Three types are seen in the map region: (1) very small (<50 km long, ~100 m high), irregular scarps that commonly enclose topographically depressed areas; they are restricted to the intermediate and smooth plains units in the eastern part of the map region; (2) small (~100 km long, ~100 m high), arcuate or sinuous scarps, also confined primarily to the intermediate and smooth plains units in the eastern part of the map region; and (3) large (>100 km long, ~1 km high), broadly arcuate but locally irregular or sinuous scarps whose faces are somewhat steeper. Several of these scarps (lat 83° S., long 80°) deform craters and offset preexisting features vertically (FDS 166751).
Whilst the males before me from Rio de Janeiro,Parana and Blumenau show inter se no differences worth mentioning, the males of bisanthe from Rio Grande do Sul can be at once separated from their more northern representatives by the predominantly white-grey instead of purple-brown under surface, which in addition is traversed by more sharply defined, i.e. more strongly black-bordered and consequently more distinct, grey-white or pale yellow longitudinal bands. Also the bisanthe females are paler yellow beneath and in the form pseudocypris with more prominent light areas than in mellinia. Thus in the north Espírito Santo with an almost uniform hot, damp climate all the year round, which produces a continuous, vast forest area covering the still almost unknown interior of the province, has a deep-coloured, one might say rainy-season form.
There are two longitudinal coordinate systems in use for Vesta, with prime meridians separated by 150°. The IAU established a coordinate system in 1997 based on Hubble photos, with the prime meridian running through the center of Olbers Regio, a dark feature 200 km across. When Dawn arrived at Vesta, mission scientists found that the location of the pole assumed by the IAU was off by 10°, so that the IAU coordinate system drifted across the surface of Vesta at 0.06° per year, and also that Olbers Regio was not discernible from up close, and so was not adequate to define the prime meridian with the precision they needed. They corrected the pole, but also established a new prime meridian 4° from the center of Claudia, a sharply defined crater 700 meters across, which they say results in a more logical set of mapping quadrangles.
The two other major manuscripts of the group are the sacramentaries named for Hornbach and Petershausen. In the group of four presentation miniatures in the former described above "we can almost follow ... the movement away from the expansive Carolingian idiom to the more sharply defined Ottonian one".Dodwell, 134, quoted; Beckwith, 92–93; compare the St John portraits in the Gero Codex and the Lorsch Gospels the Annunciation to the shepherds from the Pericopes of Henry II, "Liuthar group" of the "Reichenau school" A number of important manuscripts produced from this period onwards in a distinctive group of styles are usually attributed to the scriptorium of the island monastery of Reichenau in Lake Constance, despite an admitted lack of evidence connecting them to the monastery there. C. R. Dodwell was one of a number of dissident voices here, believing the works to have been produced at Lorsch and Trier instead.
HRW points out that under international humanitarian law, police are presumed to be civilian - and thus immune from attack - unless formally incorporated into the armed forces of a party to a conflict or directly participating in the hostilities. HRW representative stated that a decision that police and police stations are legitimate military targets depends on whether those police play a role in fighting against Israel, or whether a particular police station is used to store weapons or for some other military purpose. IDF stated that it perceives police in Gaza as equivalent to the enemy's armed force and as such legitimate targets. Israeli Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center (ITIC) alleged that the distinction between the internal security forces and Hamas military wing is not sharply defined and cites Gaza police officials who said that police were instructed to fight the enemy in case of an invasion into the Gaza Strip.
The forewings are dark fuscous with a broad shining white stripe covering the median third from the base to near the termen, sharply defined above, beneath suffused into a pale yellow-brownish stripe which covers the dorsal third along the extreme edge. There is a fine suffused whitish-ochreous streak along the costa from one-fourth to two-thirds, sending a branch from the middle to above the apex of the median stripe. There is an oblique dark fuscous line splitting the apex of the median stripe and there are five white wedge-shaped marks on the posterior third of the costa, partly in the cilia, the first two more oblique and slender, the first terminating in a short fine metallic mark. The apical area beneath these is suffused with ferruginous yellowish, which extends also along the terminal area, except a leaden- metallic terminal streak.
Usually, the term "pits", when used in the context of information media, refers to features with sharply defined edges and discrete lengths and depths, such as the pits on digital optical media such as CDs and DVDs. In order to maintain an extremely light tracking force, the stylus arm is surrounded by coils, which sense deflection, and a circuit in the player responds to the signals from these coils by moving the stylus head carriage in steps as the groove pulls the stylus across the disc. Other coils are used to deflect the stylus, to finely adjust tracking. This system is very similar to—yet predates—the one used in Compact Disc players to follow the spiral optical track, where typically a servo motor moves the optical pickup in steps for coarse tracking and a set of coils shifts the laser lens for fine tracking, both guided by an optical sensing device, which is the analogue of CED stylus-deflection sensing coils.
Hindwing with two black spots, the upper bearing often, the posterior more rarely, a red central dot; the posterior spot sometimes altogether wanting or only indicated by a dot; in the abdominal area usually a black band-like spot, and beyond the cell along the edge of the wing black dusting. The female more sharply and extendedly marked with grey; the forewing bearing beyond the cell a more or less complete median band, which is however sometimes indicated also in the male, and a submarginal band which is more sharply defined than in the male being, moreover, separated from the vitreous edge only by a row of white halfmoons. Hindwing of female more extendedly blackish; the eyespots mostly without red pupil, sometimes however also the anal ocellus bearing a red spot; near the distal margin a distinct blackish and somewhat undulate band, which is occasionally vestigial in the male. Often both wings more or less densely dusted with black.
The latter in later times acknowledged Schlatter's sharp mind and penetrating ability to critique his work, even expressing sorrow when Schlatter left Berlin for Tübingen. One significant event in the Berlin years that caused great tension, not just in Berlin, but in the whole of liberal Germany is worth mentioning. Robert Yarbrough describes this event as follows: "In 1895 Adolf Schlatter took part in a Protestant convention producing a declaration decrying the overwhelming dominance of theological liberalism on theological faculties in Germany at the time. To Schlatter’s surprise a storm of protest arose among his Berlin colleagues, who felt that the declaration was damaging to the status and high honor of the professional office. Even after a lively faculty meeting, however, Schlatter could not bring himself to regret his involvement in the convention saying: ‘For me the choice stands sharply defined: God’s believing community or professional colleagues? And my decision was as clear as the choice ... faith is more than knowledge, and church more than faculty’". p100.
A Māori chief with tattoos () seen by James Cook and his crew Julius von Haast incorrectly interpreted the earliest archaeological remains as belonging to a pre-Māori Paleolithic people; later researchers, notably Percy Smith, magnified such theories into an elaborate scenario with a series of sharply-defined cultural stages which had Māori arriving in a Great Fleet in 1350 and replacing the so-called "moa-hunter" culture with a "classic Māori" culture based on horticulture.Howe (2006), pp 25–40 However, the archaeological record indicates a gradual evolution of culture..Howe (2003), p. 161 In the course of a few centuries, the growing population led to competition for resources and an increase in warfare and an increased frequency of fortified pā. Various systems also arose aimed to conserve resources; most of these, such as and , used religious or supernatural threats to discourage people from taking species at particular seasons or from specified areas.
Pixel for pixel, the monochrome monitors produce sharper text and images than color CRT monitors. This is because a monochrome monitor is made up of a continuous coating of phosphor and the sharpness can be controlled by focusing the electron beam; whereas on a color monitor, each pixel is made up of three phosphor dots (one red, one blue, one green) separated by a mask. Monochrome monitors were used in almost all dumb terminals and are still widely used in text-based applications such as computerized cash registers and point of sale systems because of their superior sharpness and enhanced readability. Some green screen displays were furnished with a particularly full/intense phosphor coating, making the characters very clear and sharply defined (thus easy to read) but generating an afterglow-effect (sometimes called a "ghost image") when the text scrolled down the screen or when a screenful of information was quickly replaced with another as in word processing page up/down operations.
The result was paintings that had a strong sculptural quality, but within the tradition of the shallow picture plane of modernism, particularly as it was understood by Cézanne, although Uglow's work has also been compared to the simple classicism of the Renaissance artist Piero della Francesca particularly for the way he would make his life models pose in ways to emphasise simple geometric shapes.Unsigned obituary, 'Euan Uglow', in The Daily Telegraph (London newspaper), 1 September 2000 Planes are articulated very precisely, edges are sharply defined, and colours are differentiated with great subtlety. Uglow preferred that his canvas be a square, a golden rectangle, or a rectangle of exact root value, as is the case with the Root Five Nude (1976).Lambirth, Andrew, "A State of Emergency", Modern Painters, Summer 1993 He then carried out careful measurements at every stage of painting, a method Coldstream had imparted to him and which is identified with the painters of the Euston Road School.
Instead, the sharply-defined lip marks the former level of the (undulating) soil surface, below which solution by soil water (pH 6.0) occurred. In contrast, the ‘wavestone’ at Creevagh (Plate 2), which occurs inside a meander of the river Shannon (pH 8.3), seems an obvious candidate for formation in a lake since its lip is horizontal. The lake surface, though, would have to remain at exactly the same height for a remarkably long period to create such a lip, while wave-splash would lead to a rounding of its edges. It is probable that sub-soil solution (pH 5.4) is occurring beneath the coarse grass that abuts the limestone in the foreground. If this is long-continued it would eventually lead to the formation of a dipping lip akin to that on the ‘wavestone’ at Gortlecka. The ‘wavestone' at Cornaseer (Plate 3) is regarded as being the ‘type’ model,Parkes, M., Meehan, R. & Préteseille, S. (2012): The Geological Heritage of Roscommon.
A. levana L. (64d) has on a reddish ochreous ground a characteristic pattern of spots, some whitish subapical and distomarginal spots on the forewing and a row of blue bars near the distal margin of the hindwing. The underside of the forewing on the whole agrees with the upper, but the apical area bears violet dusting, the ground-colour is paler, and there are sharply defined white lines at the cell- spots; the hindwing is for the greater part red-brown, bearing in the centre a pale transverse band which widens behind, in places light lines traverse the wing and there is a dull violet smear in the distal area; the margin of both wings bears thin black lines. This is the first brood, which flies early in the spring (April—May). There occur among the ordinary form occasionally specimens in which the black basal and costal markings are confluent and both wings dark-margined, while the other markings of the wings (in the centre) are quite or nearly obsolete, these areas therefore being nearly uniformly red- brown.
March 28–May 10: Inauguration of MADI: Dopo Il Rettancolo show at Arte Struktura Gallery in Milan, focused on the works of three MADI artists: Arden Quin, Salvador Presta and Roitman. 20 September, at the Albuquerque Museum, Roitman gave a conference in which he introduced his philosophy of MADI-Ludico architecture, the ideas for which grew out of his works with 3-dimensional collages and laser-cut sculpture: "Strictly polygonal design of asymmetric façades ...geometric forms with sharply defined colors and contours, tri- dimensional surfaces, a clearly 'ludico' (playful) spirit...the same basic computer program can produce an almost inexhaustible series of different exterior panels. This system provides us with the means to overthrow the tyranny of the module which has, with few exceptions, ruled architecture from the time of ancient Egypt..." The same day, in the same city, he inaugurated a solo show at the Arte Struktura Gallery. In October 1996, Roitman obtained a commission to design and build a model for his project of a MADI-Ludico building designated for a site in downtown Dallas.
In 1920, prince Wilhelm of Sweden visited Guatemala and made a very objective description of both Guatemalan society and Estrada Cabrera government in his book Between two continents, notes from a journey in Central America, 1920. The prince explained the dynamics of the Guatemalan society at the time pointing out that even though it called itself a "Republic", Guatemala had three sharply defined classes: # Criollos: a minority conformed originally by ancient families descendants of the Spaniards that conquered Central America and that by 1920 conformed both political parties in the country. By 1920, they were mixed to a large extended with foreigners and the great majority had Indian blood in their veins. They led the country both politically and intellectually partly because their education, although poor for European standards of the time, was enormously superior to the rest of the people of the country, partly because only criollos were allowed in the main political parties and also because their families controlled and for the most part owner the cultivated parts of the country.
Upperside very dark Vandyke brown, the cilia conspicuously white, the transverse white discal band of the underside showing through on both forewing and hindwing, but very plainly on the latter. Forewing with a white-centred, fulvous-ringed, median, and a similar but much smaller subapical eyespot, the latter very often absent; broad but faint and ill-defined sub-terminal and terminal white lines. Hindwing: a subtornal ocellus (eyespot) similar to those on the forewing and much more conspicuous; subterminal and terminal whitish lines. Underside: ground colour similar; basal half of wings closely irrorated (sprinkled) with pale transverse stripe; a conspicuous white discal band, inwardly sharply defined, outwardly diffused, followed by series of ocelli similar to the ocelli on the upperside, a median and two subapical on the forewing, three subapical and three tornal on the hindwing: the number of these ocelli is variable, sometimes one or more additional ocelli are present, often one or more are lacking on the hindwing; finally, the subterminal and terminal white bands as on the upperside but better defined.
The Western Ore Mountains transition gradually towards the (south)west into the "historic" Vogtland region and even includes several of its villages, whilst the official boundary with the natural region of Vogtland, which has to be sharply defined, largely follows the watershed between the Ore Mountain rivers of the Zwickauer Mulde and, in the extreme south, the Zwota, with the Vogtland river of the White Elster, the central and southern part of this boundary lying somewhat to the east, so that the source regions of the eastern Elster tributaries are still counted as being in the Ore Mountains. The Vysoký kámen (Hoher Stein) near Erlbach is the southernmost mountain of the Ore Mountain range. To the north the Western Ore Mountains descend to the gently rolling Ore Mountain Basin and the town of Zwickau, whilst the mountain range continues to the south on the far side of the border with the Czech Republic. The state border largely follows the ridgeline of the mountains, which continues southwest on both sides of the border into the Elstergebirge and the natural region of Vogtland.
Józef Stanisław Łobodowski (born 1909, Pruwiszki – died 1988 Madrid) was a Polish poet and political thinker. His poetic works are broadly divided into two distinct phases: the earlier one, until about 1934, in which he was sometimes identified as "the last of the Skamandrites",By Wacław Iwaniuk, who called him "ostatni skamandryta"; cited in: Jadwiga Sawicka, Wołyń poetycki w przestrzeni kresowej, Warsaw, DiG, 1999, p. 55\. . and the second phase beginning about 1935, marked by the pessimistic and tragic colouring associated with the newly nascent current in Polish poetry known as katastrofizm (catastrophism). The evolution of his political thought, from the radical left to radical anticommunism, broadly paralleled the trajectory of his poetic oeuvre. To the contemporary reading public Łobodowski was also known as the founder and editor of several avant-garde literary periodicals, of a newspaper, translator, novelist, prose writer in the Polish and Spanish languages, radio personality, and preeminently a prolific opinion writer with sharply defined political views active before, during and after the Second World War in the Polish press (since 1940 only in the émigré press).
Edgar Allan Poe alluded to Fanny Kemble's writing in his description of a beautiful Wissahickon valley in his 1844 essay "Morning on the Wissahiccon", in which he wrote: > Now the Wissahiccon is of so remarkable a loveliness that, were it flowing > in England, it would be the theme of every bard, and the common topic of > every tongue, if, indeed, its banks were not parcelled off in lots, at an > exorbitant price, as building-sites for the villas of the opulent. Yet it is > only within a very few years that any one has more than heard of the > Wissahiccon ... the brook is narrow. Its banks are generally, indeed almost > universally, precipitous, and consist of high hills, clothed with noble > shrubbery near the water, and crowned at a greater elevation, with some of > the most magnificent forest trees of America, among which stands conspicuous > the liriodendron tulipiferum. The immediate shores, however, are of granite, > sharply defined or moss-covered, against which the pellucid water lolls in > its gentle flow, as the blue waves of the Mediterranean upon the steps of > her palaces of marble.
