Wondering if the ship may be in distress, Delano boards his whale-boat and sets sail towards the suspicious ship. Able to smell them but unable to determine where they are, Snowgoose gets so upset that the Boneless King loses patience with her and has her locked in a storeroom. The tale picks up exactly were the previous volume, The Frigate Captain, left off with Mason at the Sinclair family estate of White Oaks following the death of his wife's treacherous cousin, Benjamin Willis, and Sinclair in New York following the action at Pollepel Island. Mason meets Captain Patrick Franklin and learns that he and Vanessa will be part of the escort for a convoy that will actually be carrying General Lord Cornwallis back to America, where he will take up a new command, aboard his brother Dick's Indiaman Resolute Star. Some days into the voyage, the ship is first becalmed then hit by a simoom (a combination of a sand storm and hurricane) that capsizes the ship and sends everyone except the narrator and an old Swede overboard. Driven southward by the magical simoom towards the South Pole, the narrator's ship eventually collides with a gigantic black galleon, and only the narrator manages to scramble aboard. Once aboard, the narrator finds outdated maps and useless navigational tools throughout the ship, the timbers of which seem somehow to have grown or expanded over time.

As punishment, the Captain-General has Ferdinand executed, confiscates the riflemen's money and weapons and has them deported back to Europe on board the Espiritu Santo. Lord Cochrane, a former Royal Navy officer now in service to the Chilean rebels under Bernardo O'Higgins, ambushes the Espiritu Santo and, with the assistance of Sharpe and Harper, capture it, taking Captain Ardiles prisoner. Cochrane rendezvouses with his flagship the O'Higgins, patches up the rapidly sinking Espiritu Santo, loads Major Miller and his marines aboard the crippled ship, and sets sail for a suicidal attack upon the port of Puerto Crucero. Cochrane and Miller lead the marines ashore, with Sharpe and Harper in tow, and with supporting fire from the O'Higgins capture the citadel.

The Colonel, now a counsel, is imprisoned by the plotters and Jim kidnaps Anna Mae, compelling Rowland to save the king, cabinet, sweetheart, and counsel for the sake of insurance, love, and country.

London journeys onto the SS Tipton with the belief that she is on a vacation, until she is informed otherwise by Mr. Moseby that it is for her to attend Seven Seas High (or as London refers to it, "stupid sea-school") so she can attend school properly without skipping class. London bitterly sees this as more as a punishment than an opportunity. When London finds out later that she has to share a cabin, she bribes her cabin-mate, Padma, with jewelry to leave in "The Suite Life Sets Sail", so she can have her own cabin. At the end of the episode, Bailey Pickett is revealed to be a girl, which prompts her to be assigned in London's half-vacant cabin.

In December 2006, following a request by the crew of the Anzac class frigate HMAS Ballarat (which uses the caricature of "Ballarat Bertie" from the label as a mascotBertie sets sail again (via Internet Archive)) to Catherine King, the Member of Parliament representing the Division of Ballarat, Foster's Group (CUB's parent company) created a limited run of the beer. An initial release of 40 pallets (4,800 slabs, 115,200 individual cans) sold out within days of release, with $1 from every slab donated to the United Way charities. A second run of 50 pallets was released shortly after. In November 2011 another limited edition release of the beer was brewed by CUB, with the 300 kegs being distributed between 26 licensed premises in Ballarat for the Ballarat Cup weekend.

By now, they have learned that the Skangite inner council have come from all over the world, and for the first time, Sarah realises that there must be more than one Skang aboard the ship. Sarah intends to slip aboard the ship herself to investigate while the Brigadier and Chatterjee go through official channels, but the ship sets sail at 2:00 am that night. When the Brigadier, the Doctor and Chatterjee arrive at the compound, they find that the cultists have already gone—leaving behind an emaciated Alex Whitbread, who collapses in despair when he learns that the ship has already sailed. When the Brigadier mentions that they plan to catch up to the cultists in Sri Lanka, Alex reveals that they filed a false shipping report—but refuses to reveal their real destination unless the Brigadier agrees to take him along.

The suppression of the Jesuits was a politically instigated removal of all members of the Society of Jesus from most of the countries of Western Europe and their colonies, beginning in 1759, and ultimately approved by The Holy See in 1773. In 1814, Pope Pius VII restored the Society to its previous provinces and Jesuits began resuming their work in those countries. Jesuits had been serially expelled from the Portuguese Empire (1759), France (1764), the Two Sicilies, Malta, Parma, the Spanish Empire (1767) and Austria and Hungary (1782).

A rich fusion of legend and folklore, science and fantasy, ancient and modern, brings the story to a climax. By the time Aoxomoxoa sets sail for the castle of the Wounded King, in a futuristic yacht called the Lorien, with a mainframe computer in the jewel of a ring borrowed from the female Merlin, the re-imagining, re-vision of the Arthur cycle seems triumphantly complete. Jimi Hendrix was a great fan of science fiction, though probably not as steeped in sf as Gwyneth Jones has proved to be in rock and roll. His lyrics and his music permeate Castles Made Of Sand, but here the ruin of treasured dreams (...and so castles made of sand, fall in the sea...) is not the end of the story; and the violent romanticism of Led Zeppelin is not the last phase of this rock and roll career. There is more of Jones’s "complicated optimism" to come.

Having by this time spent several decades studying mysticism and astrology, Imaginos discovers that Elizabethan England's rise as a superpower coincided with John Dee's acquisition of a magic obsidian mirror from Mexico, which serves as a bridge between Les Invisibles' alien world and ours, and the means to spread their influence on Earth. Some fans see Les Invisibles' actions in favour of England against Spain as a sort of vengeance for the extermination by the conquistadores of their worshippers in Central America, while others view their intervention as only part of the mysterious scheme carried on by the alien entities through the centuries ("In the Presence of Another World"). This revelation in mind, Imaginos decides that the time has come to reattempt his aborted mission to Mexico. On August 1, 1892, he sets sail aboard a "charmed ship" which, despite "storms on land and storms at sea", delivers him faithfully to Mexico.

Before Bob's one night engagement ends, Windbreaker sets sail, kidnapping the Belchers, though only Bob seems disturbed by this. The voyage proves to be deplorable for Bob, as the Captain's current chef Duval proves to be almost unbearable— using vegetables to make vegetable stew that aren't even fresh, and purposefully sweating into the stew to "save on salt." Bob finds this disturbing, but Duval claims that the passengers don't care, and only complain if they run out, which angers Captain Flarty, and insists on serving rotten oysters to the passengers, despite that it could cause them to suffer food poisoning. Bob eventually can't stand the crazy Captain Flarty and disgruntled chef and escapes and soon tries to signal a nearby ship for help, but Captain Flarty drowns Bob out with loud music, and the nearby ship captain thinks that Bob is just messing with him and ignores Bob's drowned out calls for help.

To Hilda's surprise, the reinvigorated Alex is the first to lift his hands to Brother Will's body and initiate the process of Incandescence; just as the Skang chanted Alex back into the fold, now their disharmony burns away the dead Skang's body in a blaze of light. The crew of the Hallaton wake miserable and hung over, and although they notice that the Doctor and Sarah have gone, they prepare to set sail anyway. Meanwhile, Sarah returns to the beach only to find that the acolytes sent out by Brother Will to look for intruders have found their lifeboat and are standing guard over it. She is thus forced to strap her camera to her head and swim out to the Hallaton, but the reefs are close to the surface and it is relatively easy for her to get out to the ship before it sets sail. Even with her photographs, however, the crew find it difficult to accept that they’ve been tricked—until the Hallaton swings around within sight of the rocky beach and they can all see the truth for themselves.

Sydney Ferries allowed the public to name its fleet of Emerald-class ferries through a naming competition. It was announced that the most popular name was Boaty McBoatface but, as it had already been taken, the judges opted to go instead for the second-place choice, and one of the ferries was thus named Ferry McFerryface.
