He was shot and killed while he was on sentry duty on a compound that had recently been secured as part of Operation Panchai Palang, near Char-e-Anjir, just outside Lashkar Gah, in Helmand Province. Corporal Lee 'Scotty' Scott from EGYPT Squadron, 2nd Royal Tank Regiment was killed in Afghanistan on 10 July 2009 near Nad Ali, Helmand province while taking part in Operation Panchai Palang. He died in an explosion as he was travelling in the lead vehicle of a group of BvS 10 Vikings.

Eckford also demonstrated a facility for dealing with labour crises, as demonstrated by an incident on 1 May 1814, when a United States Army soldier on sentry duty at Sackets Harbor shot and killed a carpenter after the launching of USS Superior, provoking an armed confrontation between soldiers and shipyard workers, who threatened to go on strike and go home, crippling American shipbuilding on the Great Lakes; Eckford joined Chauncey and the US Army commander, Major General Jacob Brown, in talking to the men and defusing the situation, avoiding further violence and allowing shipyard work to continue.Selig, p. 49. With both the Browns and Eckford active at Sackets Harbor, it has become a bit murky as to what extent Eckford was involved in the building of some of the ships there.

In the Fortress of Louisbourg in the 18th century, Guardhouses were where sentries were stationed to eat and sleep between periods of sentry duty at the 21 sentry posts around the town. The town had five Guardhouses (the Dauphine Gate, the townside entrance to the King's Bastion, the Queen's Gate, the Maurepas Gate, and the Pièce de la Grave), and whilst not sleeping sentries would be "on call" from those Guardhouses at need. Convolvulus was commanded by Lieutenant Richard Sinclair Connell RNR from January 1942 until August 1942 and formed part of the 36th Escort Group which escorted the notorious convoy HG 76 as well as convoys OG 82 and HG 84. During the escort of the latter, Convolvulus was left on a number of occasions as the convoy's lone escort whilst the other escorts investigated suspected U-boat contact or chased away U-boats caught on the surface. Like other Lebanese militias, the PLA was also involved in the kidnapping of political adversaries. Later on 8 September 1988, the deputy for Jezzine in the Lebanese Parliament, Dr Farid Serhal, was seized by PLA militiamen at a checkpoint also in the Ouza'i district of West Beirut and driven off to the Le Bristol Hotel Beirut in Rue Madame Curie, Ras Beirut, where he was temporarily held hostage.
