But the biggest piece of the tennis puzzle was recovering his self-belief under pressure — the ability to hit a small target when you need to hit it most; the knowledge that you can absorb an opponent's big shots and best efforts again and again until the time is just right for you to be bold yourself.

So to talk of a Leicester Effect is a bit of a red herring, given how their own triumph owed so much to external forces, as well as their own magnificence – just as Bannister's four-minute-mile wasn't just the romantic story of unwavering self-belief, but also a rather less romantic one of incremental improvements to track surfaces, training methods and sports science.

This is, of course, rooted in a weird optimism; for Nigeria, unrestrained self-belief and wildly unfounded optimism are just a way of life, while for England, the optimism stems from a mix of a low dosage of that old empire juice in the water supply and good old-fashioned we did it before, dammit (never mind their win was all the way back in 1966; see also: Wimbledon, Virginia Wade, and Andy Murray).

The track is written by a member of the Lightning Seeds, who were famed for writing bittersweet love songs like "Pure" and "Perfect", so while "Three Lions" is explicitly based around football, it's also a forlorn love song that's imbued with nostalgia, the push and pull between reckless self-belief and despair, the sense of feeling worse off, but also the thirst to get up even if you're going to get knocked down again.

And we have been able to do it because, for all the vicissitudes of the Cold War and globalization and the war on terrorism, Americans have broadly understood that great nations, like great institutions and great citizens, lead by example: by inspiring rather than coercing loyalty; by a decent respect for the opinions of mankind; by steadfastness of purpose and evenness of temperament; by the understanding that a policy of magnanimity and benevolence will, if nothing else, provide us with the friends, and the self-belief, needed in times of adversity.
