The announcement comes just days after the company recalled some of its Segway Ninebot scooters in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Lake Tahoe due to manufacturing defects that could result in battery explosions.
Although Lime was planning to launch its new model of scooter that it built in partnership with Segway in San Francisco last month, it's now debuting them in the Los Angeles area first.
The company worked with Segway, known for producing the infamous two-wheel scooter, to add a "gravity adaptive system" on the 20-inch suitcase, which helps the bag balance itself as it rolls.
"Our core focus is to create innovative transportation solutions that will help people move around their communities — including solutions for the urban dweller and outdoor adventurer," said Julie Tang, marketing director at Segway.

Formed in 2015 by the combination of Chinese electronics maker Ninebot and US mobility company Segway, the company quietly became a leading provider of electric scooters to rental startups like Bird and Lime.
However, the Segway has since become more identifiable with mall cops and fleets of city tours as its confusing and bulky construction made it difficult for commuters to adopt into their everyday lives.

In May, it rolled out an all-new custom scooter that's supposed to be far more durable than the ones it previously used, which were built by companies like Okai, Xiaomi, and Segway-Ninebot.
When Bird launched in Santa Monica, California, in 193, its fleet was comprised mostly of consumer scooters made by Xiaomi and Segway-Ninebot, which were never intended for heavy fleet use and depreciated quickly.
It's also worth noting that the new Segway miniPRO is not the same product as the Ninebot mini, a lower-cost, less-feature-rich self-balancer built solely by Ninebot for the Chinese market.
Click here to view original GIFGIF: VimeoIt's not uncommon for new technology to spawn a new sport: Drone racing has become hugely popular around the world, and Segway Polo is apparently still a thing.
The company will also sell the systems, which were designed with DEKA Research & Development Corp, a New Hampshire-based company owned by Segway scooter inventor Dean Kamen, according to sources familiar with the arrangement.
To make things a little more confusing, the original Segway (a company launched by inventor Dean Kamen more than a dozen years ago) sued a bunch of hoverboard manufacturers (including Ninebot) over patent infringement.
So one of the things that I thought was interesting about them is they didn't use other people's scooters like a Ninebot/Segway, but they were instead using scooters that they had built themselves.
The scooter's design and overall look really set it apart from the current crop of electric kick scooters made by Chinese companies like Segway-Ninebot and Xiaomi that so far have dominated the market.
Segway-Ninebot has a ton of expertise when it comes to electric kick scooters, as it became the biggest supplier to the many scooter-sharing companies that popped up over the last few years.
Unicorn's all-white vehicles were rebranded Segway ES2 scooters with some high-tech add-ons, including integration with Tile, Evans' other company, which uses Bluetooth to track lost items, like wallets, keys, or phones.
First of all, at 21.5-inch wide x 10.3-inch deep x 20-inch high, with a pair of inflatable 10-inch wheels, the 28 pound Segway miniPRO is considerably larger than any hoverboard model.
A lawsuit filed last week in Los Angeles accuses scooter operators Lime and Bird, along with China's Xiaomi and Segway, of causing a public health crisis by launching its scooters in public places across California.
A few years ago, Apple obtained a Limited Exclusion Order against certain Samsung products, but that falls well short of the breadth and power of the General Exclusion Order that Segway got in this case.
Veloso is already testing out the idea on the CMU campus, building roving, segway-shaped robots called "cobots" to autonomously escort guests from building to building and ask for human help when they fall short.
The Segway miniPRO is now $50 off on Amazon for Prime Day, so you can finally be the envy of all of your friends while rolling through your 'hood on one of these bad boys.
"They are great switching opportunities...We have seen in the past real share-taking opportunity during big iconic phone launches," Sievert said, just as CEO John Legere rolled into his office on a Segway scooter.
Legere is just as well-known for his unconventional demeanor as a tech exec, choosing to frequently wear T-Mobile magenta clothing, littering presentations with curse words, and even riding a Segway around the office.

Researchers at IOActive have found that security oversights in the Ninebot by Segway miniPRO hoverboard could allow an attacker to remotely track hoverboard riders, circumvent safety locks, remotely execute code, and even take over the machine.
After all, most telepresence robots follow the iPad-on-a-Segway formula, which means they can't go up or down stairs, and are usually placed below eye-height, making face-to-face communication a little awkward.
Segway-Ninebot, currently the largest scooter supplier for smartphone-based services such as Bird and Lime, has unveiled a semi-autonomous scooter that can make its way to a charging station when its battery runs low.
And while some startups like Lime and Bird say they're using exclusive Segway-Ninebot scooter designs, Ho clarifies that these customizations are "superficials"—such as specific colors and tweaks to the brakes and lights, for example.
Over the years, Kamen (who also happened to invent the Segway) has made it known that he'd like to see the chair make a comeback, but has thus far been unable to deliver on the promise.
Oh sure, there were plenty of wealthy techies for whom it was a fun toy, and Segway was able to experiment with rental programs and even to explore a partnership with Zipcar, the car-sharing outfit.
GIF: IOActive Earlier this year, a researcher at Washington-based security firm IOActive discovered a way of hacking into these Segway scooters through the app, meaning they could be remotely hijacked while a rider is moving.
For example, Segway will show a whole host of new electric transporters, the most flashy of which is the S-Pod, a two-wheeled chair that can't be tipped over and can turn on a dime.
Its scooters account for one-fifth of its total revenue, almost all of which comes from its range of personal transporters, which include self-balancing unicycles (one is pictured) and e-skates, using Segway-Ninebot's balancing technology.
From the depths of the internet comes to us one clip of an owl in parts unknown, riding what appears to be a Segway miniPRO hoverboard (self-balancing scooter, in the company's parlance) or something like it.

BEIJING/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Segway-Ninebot Group, a Beijing-based electric scooter maker, on Friday unveiled a scooter that can return itself to charging stations without a driver, a potential boon for the burgeoning scooter-sharing industry.
Normally, I'd take the underground train to work, but today I'm on the Segway, which forces me to quickly come to the realization that I have no idea how to get to work when traveling above ground.
Each scooter is water resistant, comes with a trunk in the seat that can fit a full-size helmet, and is equipped with "light-sensing intelligent matrix LED headlights" and a digital display, according to Segway-Ninebot.
As Segway-Ninebot starts moving into new vehicle types — especially ones that go much faster than a kick scooter — it will be crucial that the company gets the durability side of the equation right from the jump.
He considers the Segway a footnote to his career, something of far less import than the advances he pioneered in insulin pumps and dialysis machines, or the students he's encouraged, through his nonprofit FIRST, to pursue engineering.
The company was soon embroiled in a three-way patent war with Segway parent company Ninebot and Seattle engineer Shane Chen, who held a patent for a very similar device that he eventually sold to scooter company Razor.
In addition, I could lock the device through the app; if anyone tried to move it while it was in locked mode, the app would vibrate my phone and the Segway would sound an alarm and tip over.
Previously, the startup was using off-the-shelf-models, namely the Segway Ninebot ES2 and ES4, which aren't explicitly designed to withstand the wear and tear endured by being shared commercially, with multiple users and rides per day.
And unlike vehicles like the Segway, there's no body weight shifting required, with steering designed around that single handle, which is positioned at about stomach height so it can be used in a relaxed position by the rider.
Aside from a smaller form factor, the 28-pound Segway MiniPro differentiates itself from the original, and other hoverboards, with a knee control bar that's used to steer the scooter by simply leaning to the left or right.
Segway-Ninebot says the E200P version can go from 0 to 25 miles per hour in three seconds, and that it uses large disc brakes to help bring the scooter to a stop from that impressive top speed.
Photo: Mario Tama (Getty)The heat is on in an apparent fight between two e-scooter companies after Lime said earlier this week that some of the batteries made by one of its manufacturers, Segway Ninebot, could catch fire.
You can use it to remote control your scooter or shut it off when no one's on it, and you could even use its social GPS tracking feature to show all Segway MiniPros in an area in real-time.
Segway/Ninebot gets credit for building an excellent rideable that, unlike some early competitors, meets all the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) criteria for not catching on fire or blowing up, but they left us vulnerable in an equally dangerous way.
The scooter is a cool $1,299 — Ninebot and other Segway scooters normally start at around $500 — and comes with $100 in Bird ride credit for those times you don't want to deal with your own scooter (whenever that is).
The hoverboard industry suffered another major blow on Wednesday after the International Trade Commission (ITC) announced a ban on certain personal transporter devices being manufactured and imported into the country in response to a patent claim filed by Segway.
BEIJING/HONG KONG, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Segway-Ninebot Group, a Beijing-based electric scooter maker, on Friday unveiled a scooter that can return itself to charging stations without a driver, a potential boon for the burgeoning scooter-sharing industry.
The original scooters deployed by companies like Skip, Bird, and Lime — mostly sourced from Chinese companies like Xiaomi and Segway-Ninebot — weren't built for shared use, so they were prone to breakdowns, often within weeks of being rolled out.
With his new four-wheel chair, which uses a gyroscope similar to that in a two-wheeled Segway and self-stabilizing software, Goffer can maneuver upright over uneven urban terrain and join conversations face to face with people standing up.
But researchers at IOActive figured out how to hack into the Segway miniPRO and trigger remote-control features while someone is riding the board, making it speed up, slow down, and even stop dead in its tracks without the riders' consent.
Using a small joystick at the end of a long handle, the Üo rider can also be spun 360-degrees without the ball moving, making it more maneuverable than the Segway, and easier to navigate crowded areas without bumping into pedestrians.
The import ban applies only to Segway-like "personal transporters" with a handlebar; it does not cover "hoverboards" like the one pictured in your article that consist of two wheels, a platform in between them, and a motor, but no handlebar.

The company already offers an air purifier, water purifier, blood pressure monitor, and smart segway among many other smartphone-controlled products, but a rice cooker is an essential part of any Chinese (/Asian) household so this product has been long anticipated.
Created in partnership with Xiaomi portfolio company NineBot and Segway, the robo-rideable butler can stream video, make cute expressions with its front display, and whatever else you want, really, since it'll be open platform starting second half of the year.
Segway-Ninebot also teased on Tuesday a concept version of a small electric motorcycle, as well as a self-balancing and semi-autonomous version of the eScooter, though the company says it has no plans to bring either vehicle to market.
Skip also argues that while its new scooter costs 210% more upfront than those from vendors like Segway-Ninebot, it expects them to last twice as long, be easier to repair, and ultimately save it more money in the long run.
But that would soon be forgotten, because Ghetts had entered the stage, riding a Segway, gliding back and forth across the platform like a jockey saddling a horse, mic in hand, ready to deliver the finest set of the weekend.
Then, once we returned, a Segway robot equipped with Intel tech greeted us, directed me to enter a pre-parking zone and bade me exit the vehicle as the autonomous parking system ended the trip, reversing the 5 series neatly into its spot.
Every earthling in the game is either an obstacle or a helper in some small concrete way, from the segway-riding mall-cops who butt into you to the carrot-suit-wearing wizards who grant you promotions and allow you to level up.
The Moov responds to the shifting of a rider's weight almost like a Segway, whereas the more typical way to control a hoverboard involved riders twisting their feet together at the ankle to accelerate or decelerate, or separately to turn and pivot.
Formed by the 2015 combination of China's Ninebot and U.S. transportation pioneer Segway, the company was most recently valued by private market investors at $1.5 billion and is now looking to raise $200 million from financiers, Gao told Reuters in an interview.

The US International Trade Commission banned of hoverboard imports entirely for violating Segway patents, and last February, the CPSC wrote a letter to importers and manufacturers asking them to pull all hoverboards from shelves until they could be considered safe for US consumers.
Other features that Whill hopes will allow it to stand out from competitors (like the iBot, which Toyota and Segway inventor Dean Kamen recently announced plans to bring back) include technology that will allow devices to drive autonomously and be managed remotely.
Abacus reports that Segway-Ninebot could be introducing the go-kart kit as early as July 24th in Los Angeles — just a little over a month before it's scheduled to show off the Drift W1 e-skates at IFA 2018 in Berlin.
Bieber performed in China in 2013 when media coverage centered on him stripping on stage in Beijing to reveal his bare torso, being carried up the steps of the Great Wall of China, and riding a segway, again shirtless, through the streets.
Segway is not necessarily known as the coolest of tech companies, with a name that evokes the idea of superfluous, touristy technology, but the brand is now trying to remedy with that with something unexpected: a robotic butler that users can ride.
With a growing demand from scooter-sharing services, Segway-Ninebot says it's developing an "Intel Inside" approach to its business as a commercial supplier, developing a few products that can be slightly modified for customers, global sales VP Tony Ho tells Axios.
"Upon reading The Washington Post news article pertaining to Lime's recall, we contacted Segway Ninebot to obtain their verification that all scooters purchased by Bird are free of any manufacture defects found in Lime's earlier model scooters," a Bird spokesperson told TechCrunch.
Now if that isn't the best journalistic segway you've ever read, you are most likely the sort of person who dresses up like a clown to scare strangers' children; someone who understands neither humour nor decency, an undesirable in the eyes of society.
And I'll tell you what: looking cool was the last thing on my mind when I got to drive the S-Pod around at Segway-Ninebot's booth at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show, because this thing is actually a lot of fun.
And if you're worried about the researchers involved in the making of this hack, IOActive told me it kept Segway speeds slow for their proof-of-concept, lest it would sensationalise the research or put anyone in actual physical danger in shooting it.
In the future, when everyone has Segway wheels instead of feet, and when we communicate only via physical emojis which we spit out of our mouths, the story of Drake and Rihanna will be studied in schools as a classic 21st century love story.
They'll go up against the four in Fantastic Four, Johnny Depp and his glued-on mustache in Mortdecai, Kevin James and either his Segway or glued-on mustache in Paul Blart Mall Cop 2, and Adam Sandler and any pair of shoes in The Cobbler.
It's an impressive feat, one that gets even more impressive when you realize that Synchanta wasn't taken down by a SWAT team or even just regular ol' cops, but bike cops—the least intimidating version of cops save for maybe the elusive Segway cop.
Called the Segway Drift W1s, they sorta look like what would happen if you took a hoverboard (as in the trendy 2016 hoverboard-that-doesn't-actually-hover "hover"board, not Marty McFly's hoverboard), split it in two and plopped one half under each foot.
It was developed with the help of engineer Dean Kamen, who previously created the Segway and stair-climbing upright wheelchair, iBot, and you can see the legacy of Kamen's work in FedEx's robot, which uses multiple pairs of wheels to climb up steps and curbs.
I obviously cannot tell the future, but do expect to see consolidation, additional market launches, and scooter companies looking to improve their unit economics by relying more on custom-built scooters rather than off-the-shelf ones from the likes of Segway and Xiaomi.
Segway chose the companies because of the range of opportunities they'll be building with Loomo, which include autonomous driving for BMW; personal robotics and depth capabilities for Intel; medical and elderly care for MIT; and enterprise and consumer safety and retail for Stibo Accelerator.
For what it's worth, a child-friendly go-kart might be the safest thing Segway's encouraged anyone to ride on in years given its track record for injuries, which includes former Segway owner Jim Hedelsen who died after accidentally riding the scooter off a cliff.

Not everyone is convinced: One scientist told the Guardian that Schmidhuber is setting up AI to disappoint, much like the vaunted Segway, which was promoted as an invention as important as the PC, but ended up at best a niche product, and at worst a laughingstock.
Apparently known as the "most beautiful wild stretch of the Great Wall," it had many weathered towers and crenelations — mosaics of stone, earth, brick, and other material — that have now vanished under smooth slab, making it perfect for segway tours or Kanye West's next fashion show.
It's certainly interesting to see an image projected as a fairly seamless addition to the world, and you can imagine how cool this would be for the tourism industry, especially if you jacked it into a Segway tour, but not exactly what I'd call a deep experience.
Product placements are a staple of the modern music video, with Miley Cyrus applying EOS lip balm in "We Can't Stop," Migos prominently displaying (and singing about) 19 brands like Chanel and Segway in "Bad and Boujee," and just about everyone shilling for Beats by Dre.
In April of this year, another spot parodied tourist behavior — selfie sticks, Segway tours — and set it against the "authentic" activities — falling asleep on the couch reading a book or watching your child build a pillow fort — enabled by a stay with one of the platform's hosts.

The scope of GEOs is often very confusing and both the ALJ and Segway carefully chose to identify only the '048 patent in the GEO precisely because infringement of it "can be determined by a simple physical inspection of a personal transporter," for example by reference to the handlebar.

Even as Swagway and Segway (which works differently than the former, but shares the hoverboards' balancing and lean-to-go technology) do their best to revive the craze and show people that there can be fun and utility in this still-new mode of intelligent transportation, public interest has evaporated.
"This decision was based not only on a superior quality scooter and the ability to maintain this quality at scale, but also our ability to work side-by-side with the Segway team in Changzhou, China and remotely here in Austin," GOAT co-founder Jennie Whitaker told TechCrunch in an email.
Digit too is likely not prepared for the specific challenges involved in the fairly simple human task of moving a box from point A to a very close point B. It's predecessor bot, Cassie, was impressive, but from a robotic mobility perspective (it can ride a segway, sort of) rather than a practical, commercial one.
For internet-goers, Boston Dynamics is that company that uploads insane videos of the humanoid Atlas robot doing backflips, of four-legged SpotMini opening doors and fighting off stick-wielding men, and as of last week, of a Segway-on-mescaline called Handle jetting around picking up and stacking boxes with a vacuum arm.

But riding on the busiest roads now can feel like a slowed-down scene from "Mad Max: Fury Road," a churning cavalcade of cars, motorcycles, pedal and electric bikes, scooters, skateboarders, battery-powered microcars, Segway-like transporters and pedestrians who rely on the brute force of numbers to push through intersections — even if the traffic light is red.
The "mi" startups were belting out products like Wi-Fi routers (like a much cheaper version of Apple's AirPort), wireless weighing scales, selfie sticks, a pen to test water quality, a Segway-like Ninebot Mini hoverboard, in-ear and over-the-ear headphones, smart TVs, movement and occupancy sensors for homes, surveillance and web cameras, and much more.

As a result of the discovery, Lime has put in effect the following changes: all Segway Ninebot scooters must be charged at Lime's own facilities and can't be charged by Juicers (Lime's program to pay freelancers who charge scooters) until the battery issue is resolved; Lime is staffing all of its charging facilities with people specifically trained to handle the batteries; it has implemented a new daily testing program for its entire fleet of scooters to check battery health.
In the battle royal to become the last dock-less scooter startup standing (and un-besmirched by poop), Bird has inked what it is characterizing as exclusive deals with Ninebot (the parent company of Segway) and Xiaomi (yes, that Xiaomi), for rights to their supply of scooters for ride-sharing in the U.S. Ninebot and Xiaomi are the current champions in the scooter manufacturing market, and locking in their supply may cut off a big source of hardware for competitors Spin and LimeBike, both of which used Ninebot and Xiaomi for scooters.
