Monocytes/macrophages can undergo epigenetic modifications after a ligation of their pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). This ligation prepares these cells for a second encounter with the training pathogen. The secondary response may be heightened not only against the training pathogen, but also against different pathogens whose antigens are recognized by the same PRRs. This effect has been observed when stimulating cells by β-glucan, Candida Albicans, or by vaccination against tuberculosis with a vaccine containing BCG.

Mregs express high levels of co- stimulatory molecules (CD86) and MHC Class II, they have the highest expression of these molecule in comparison with the other population of macrophages. T cells co-culture with Mregs showed intense activation and proliferation, so Mregs act as sufficient antigen-presenting cells. Nevertheless, in the secondary response these T cells produced high levels of IL-10. Mregs express two markers that might be used to identify Mregs in mouse, they are sphingosine kinase-1 (SPHK1) and LIGHT (TNF superfamily 14).

Rather, it was the concept of a tiered response to medical emergencies. The idea was "that we would get someone out there quickly" – via the fire department's already existing mobile first aid units – "and then a secondary response would come from the mobile intensive coronary care unit." The beauty of the tiered response system was the efficient use of fire department personnel, which allowed aid personnel to reach the scene quickly (on an average of three minutes) to start CPR. Then a few minutes later the paramedics arrived to provide more definitive care such as defibrillation.

In mammals, the question of the net effect of reactive oxygen species on aging is even less clear. Recent epidemiological findings support the process of mitohormesis in humans, and even suggest that the intake of exogenous antioxidants may increase disease prevalence in humans (according to the theory, because they prevent the stimulation of the organism's natural response to the oxidant compounds which not only neutralizes them but provides other benefits as well).. Somatic hypermutation, thus, makes the B cell receptors and the soluble antibodies in subsequent encounters with antigens, more inclusive in their antigen recognition potential of altered epitopes, apart from bestowing greater specificity for the antigen that induced proliferation in the first place. When the memory cells get stimulated by the antigen to produce plasma cells (just like in the clone's primary response), and leave even more memory cells in the process, this is known as a secondary immune response, which translates into greater numbers of plasma cells and faster rate of antibody production lasting for longer periods. The memory B cells produced as a part of secondary response recognize the corresponding antigen faster and bind more strongly with it (i.e., greater affinity of binding) owing to affinity maturation.

While they did not interview any of the adolescent subjects of the inquiry, they estimated through secondary response that as many as 300,000 American youth may be at risk of commercial sexual exploitation at any time. The Center for Court Innovation in New York City had used Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS), Social Network Analysis, capture/recapture, and Markov based probability estimates in 2008 to generate a prevalence estimate for New York City alone and found that there were approximately 3800 children that were identified as commercial sexual exploitation victims.
