She took part in the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. In all she made one trip to Calais and seven to Dunkirk rescuing 1,500 refugees and 10,200 allied soldiers. Following which the captain and first and second officers were awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, while the quartermaster received the Distinguished Service Medal. After Dunkirk she saw government service between Gourock and the Isle of Man, transporting prisoners-of-war to camps on the island.

Following this she was despatched to Guernsey to assist in the Evacuation of the Channel Islands. Viking arrived at Saint Peter Port prepared to take off evacuees and consequently evacuated 1,800 schoolchildren, almost the entire juvenile population of the island. The children were safely landed at Weymouth.

In May 1941 RAAF Townsville became Northern Area Headquarters RAAF. In the first twelve months there were changes to the base layout. There were doubts about Townsville City Council's ability to keep up electricity supply in an emergency, so in 1941 a powerhouse with its own diesel-powered generator was built on the base. Australia agreed to train pilots under the Empire Air Training Scheme, and a second Officers Accommodation Block was built at RAAF Townsville to house trainees.

As the Carpathia began to settle by the head and list to port, Captain William Prothero gave the order to abandon ship. All passengers and the surviving crew members boarded the 11 lifeboats as the Carpathia sank. There were 218 survivors of the 223 aboard. The Uruguay Naval Academy (ESNAL) () is an training institute that educates officers for commissioning primarily into the Uruguayan National Navy. It is located at Calle Miramar 1643, Barrio Carrrasco, Montevideo. Initially, Navy officers trained at the Military School (dependent on the National Army of Uruguay) until December 12, 1907, the Naval Academy was founded. It is the only institute in the country that grants the title of Officer of the National Navy or Merchant Navy, graduating as Midshipmen and as Second Officers for each career, respectively; Training and certification courses are also held for seafarers, according to the regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
