Neither team looked better than the other during a fairly uneventful first 10 minutes. in the 18th minute the Rangers captain Barry Ferguson forced Dundee United's goalkeeper, Łukasz Załuska to produce the first real save of the game. It was Dundee United however who became the dominant team as the first half progressed and took a deserved lead in the 33rd minute, the first shot by Noel Hunt was saved by Allan McGregor but the ball wasn't cleared and Hunt somehow managed to get the ball over the line despite the best efforts of Steven Davis. United could have been two goals in front moments later as Saša Papac almost scored an own goal with a pass back but Carlos Cuéllar was there to clear it off the line.

Cha scored an own goal in a UEFA Europa League match against Rennes, which resulted a 1–1 draw, ‘’"after Benoît Costil was making its way harmlessly through to Fraser Forster but there appeared to be no communication between him and Cha Du-ri, who helped it on and then watched in horror as the ball slipped past the Hoops keeper and in to the net."’’ Despite suffering from an injury during the international commitment, Cha was given a handful of first team appearances following Emilio Izaguirre’s injury by the end of the year.
By the last day of the season, after being 13 points adrift at one stage they were off the bottom of the table and had to play the team directly below them, Hereford United — the game was in their hands. If Brighton won or drew, they would be safe. Brighton defender Kerry Mayo scored an own goal in the first half and it looked as though their 77-year league career was over. But a late goal saved the day and Brighton retained their league status on goals scored (despite Hereford's superior goal difference, since goals scored took precedence in the Football League at the time). Robbie Reinelt scored the goal that will write his place in Albion history, and in the process ending Hereford's 25-year league career as it was relegated to Conference.

Roma was founded in 1927 as a result of a merger between three teams: Roman, Alba-Audace and Fortitudo, initiated by Italo Foschi. It was the intention of Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini to create a unified Roman club to challenge the dominance of Northern clubs. Thanks to the influence of Fascist general, Giorgio Vaccaro, Lazio were the only major team from Rome to resist the merger, thus a kind of rivalry emerged from the very early years of the coexistence in the same city. In 1979, Lazio fan Vincenzo Paparelli was hit in the eye and killed by a flare fired by a Roma fan from the opposite end of the stadium, becoming the first fatality in Italian football due to violence. On 17 December 2000, Lazio's Paolo Negro scored an own goal in a 1–0 Roma victory.

In 1995, Patrick Roy was famously kept in net by the head coach as "humiliation" despite allowing nine goals on 26 shots. Eleven goaltenders have scored a total of fourteen goals in National Hockey League (NHL) games. A goalkeeper can score by either shooting the puck into the net, or being awarded the goal as the last player on his team to touch the puck when an opponent scored an own goal. A goal scored by shooting the puck is particularly challenging as the goaltender has to aim for a six-foot-wide net that is close to 180 feet away, while avoiding opposing defencemen; in the case of own goals, the combined circumstance of the own goal itself in addition to the goaltender being the last player to touch the puck makes it a very rare occurrence.
After serving a three match ban, Lowry remained on the bench without playing for four matches Lowry made his first team return on 2 November 2013 when he came on as a substitute for Scott Malone against Burnley. However, his return, after spending two months without playing, was a disastrous when he scored an own goal, which saw Millwall drew 2–2. After this, Lowry was out of the first team, demoted to the substitute bench between mid-November and mid-December until he made his return on 26 December 2013, in a 4–0 loss against Watford. On 28 January 2014, Lowry was sent-off for the second time this season in the late-minutes against Sheffield Wednesday after fighting with Giles Coke, who also was sent-off as well, with both side drew 1–1.

Faulkner joined Sutton United in 1969 from fellow minnows Cray Wanderers and was playing for the non-league side when they met Leeds United in the fourth round of the FA Cup in 1970. He effectively marked Leeds centre forward, Mick Jones, during the game and impressed Leeds manager, Don Revie, sufficiently for Revie to sign him as cover for Jack Charlton who was then in his mid-30s. Faulkner made his debut against Burnley in April 1970, when he scored an own goal, and made his second appearance against Manchester City, two weeks later, when he broke his kneecap in a collision with an opposing player. Charlton retained his place in the first-team in the following seasons and Faulkner made only two more appearances for Leeds against Lierse SK in the Inter Cities Fairs Cup.

Dynamo hosted the first leg in Kiev, and it got off to a bad start for Shakhtar when Dmytro Chygrynskiy scored an own goal to give Dynamo the lead 1–0. The match was tense and thus not many clear cut chances to score were made, but Dynamo were clearly on top and a Shakhtar equaliser was looking unlikely until the 68th minute when substitute Willian crossed and Fernandinho bundled it into the goal to level the score at 1–1. Dynamo's Olexandr Aliyev had a chance to give the Kiev side the lead again in the 78th minute, but Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov saved well and the game ended 1–1. Shakhtar took their crucial away goal to Donetsk and things were looking very rosy when Jadson scored in the 17th minute in the return leg to put the aggregate scoreline at 2–1.
The first match saw Beerschot starting strong, with Kenneth Schuermans nearly deflecting a free-kick by Raphael Holzhauser into his own goal in just the first minute. OH Leuven replied with a long ball to Mathieu Maertens who saw the ball tackled away from him in last instance by Joren Dom, else he would have had a free run on goal. With 20 minutes played, Frédéric Frans also almost scored an own goal, after deflecting a free kick against the cross bar with Mike Vanhamel beaten, but a few seconds later on the other end it was his teammate Tarik Tissoudali opening the score for Beerschot, after first holding off former Beerschot player Jan Van den Bergh and then slotting in the ball past Laurent Henkinet. From that moment, Beerschot took over, forcing Henkinet to several saves, twice through a Joren Dom header, once after a shot by Marius Noubissi.

Barbados started the match needing to win by a margin of at least two goals to qualify for the final tournament, and after Grenada scored late in normal time to bring the scoreline to 2–1, Barbados deliberately scored an own goal to force extra-time, where they could get the two-goal winning margin they needed courtesy of the unconventional golden goal rule. This resulted in an unusual situation: for the last three minutes of the match, Grenada was trying to score on both goals, as either outcome (3–2 or 2–3) would have advanced them to the finals, while Barbados had to defend both goals. Ultimately, Barbados was able to prevent Grenada from scoring, thus forcing extra-time, and scored the golden goal to win the match. The outcome of the match was criticized by Grenadian manager James Clarkson, who felt that his team had been cheated out of advancing to the finals.
Andy McFarlane scored an own goal when the ball rebounded off the crossbar then into the net off his knee to give West Brom a lifeline, and two early goals in the second leg gave the Baggies the advantage, until midfielder Micky Mellon was sent off. Wins over Plymouth Argyle & Exeter City in the group stage followed by triumphs over Exeter again, Port Vale, Leyton Orient and Wycombe Wanderers over two legs saw the Swans play Huddersfield Town in a final that finished 1–1.

On nine separate occasions Gold conceded four or more goals in a game, and only once did they ever come close to accruing points, conceding an 84th-minute goal to San Fernando Valley Quakes in a close 2–1 defeat. Gold's form got worse and worse as the year progressed: they lost 5–1 to the San Fernando Valley Quakes on the road in mid-June, 6–0 at the San Diego Gauchos, 8–1 at home to the San Francisco Seals, and ended the year with a devastating 12–1 loss to Fresno Fuego – although, ironically, the Gold were 1–0 up after 56 seconds when Fresno scored an own goal! Aaron Billington and Uriel Robledo were Gold's nominal top scorers, with two goals each, Billington having played 7 games in goal and 6 games as a midfielder! Following the conclusion of the 2006 season, in which they were by far the worst team in the PDL, the team withdrew from active competition.

In January 2007, Chelsea confirmed that talks to sign Ben Haim from Bolton were unsuccessful. Following the end of the 2006–07 season, Ben Haim's contract with Bolton had expired and his future at Bolton was in doubt with media reports linking him with a move to Chelsea and Newcastle United, ex-Bolton boss Sam Allardyce admitting that he was ready to make an offer to his former charge to bring him to Newcastle.

At the end of the 2004–05 season, Abdou went on to make thirty–six appearances and scoring two times for the side. In the 2005–06 season, Abdou found himself behind the pecking order in the first team and came on as a substitute bench in number of matches, due to his poor performances. This also combined with his own injury concern. At the end of the 2005–06 season, making fifteen appearances, the club was promoted to Ligue 1 after three seasons in Ligue 2. In the 2006–07 season, Abdou missed the first half of the season, due to being suspended and playing in the club’s reserve side. Born in Porto, Costa made his professional debut with F.C. Penafiel on loan from hometown club FC Porto. The following season he was also loaned, to fellow Primeira Liga side C.S. Marítimo, playing 31 games including a controversial one in the Estádio das Antas where he scored an own goal; despite it being clearly unintentional the accusations of scoring for his team continued, forcing Porto's president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa to forbid further loaned players to play against them, a decision that stood for several decades. In the 1992–93 campaign, Costa finally joined FC Porto, slowly making his way. Five seasons later he switched to jersey No. 2, previously worn by João Domingos Pinto, also being named team captain as the veteran retired. His career three only met four black spots: two serious knee injuries (during 1995–96, which ruled him out of UEFA Euro 1996 and during 1997's pre-season in Sweden) and a feud with coach Octávio Machado early in 2001–02, which forced him into "exile" at Charlton Athletic.

Three days after returning to Coventry, Konstantopoulos was again loaned out, this time to Swansea's local rivals Cardiff City until the end of the season as cover for Finland international Peter Enckelman who was ruled out for up to two months after undergoing knee surgery. With second choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton also being ruled out through injury, Konstantopoulos was handed his debut on 22 February against Wolverhampton Wanderers, a match which ended in a 2–2 draw after Konstantopoulos scored an own goal after dropping a cross from Wolves midfielder Kyel Reid into his own net. Konstantopoulos remained in goal for the following games, but made another error in a 2–0 defeat to Norwich City, when he failed to clear a long pass and was tackled by Dave Mooney to concede the first goal of the game. After Konstantopoulos suffered a foot injury in March, Cardiff manager Dave Jones signed Stuart Taylor on loan from Aston Villa; although Konstantopoulos remained with Cardiff for the rest of the season, he did not play again for the club, and he returned to Coventry at the end of the season having made a total of six appearances.

Prior to making his debut for Brazil, the Portuguese Football Federation had considered calling him up to their own national team. David Luiz was present in every squad during the management of Menezes and was called up to the squad for the Copa América in 2011, but did not make a single appearance at the tournament due to injury. Kane's squad number was changed from 18 to 10, previously worn by Emmanuel Adebayor. In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, he said that he changed the number "to become a club legend". With Adebayor and Roberto Soldado having been put up for sale, he began the season as the club's only forward, and the third-choice captain behind Hugo Lloris and Jan Vertonghen. After a 748-minute drought, he scored his first goal of the season on 26 September 2015 as Tottenham came from behind to defeat leaders Manchester City 4–1. Eight days later, he scored an own goal from Jonjo Shelvey's corner kick away to Swansea City, but Tottenham fought back to a 2–2 draw.
