Flanagan High School’s World Guard was named the 2008 and 2012 WGI Scholastic World Champions after competing at the WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio and beating all other competitors in their division. In 2008 they performed their show "Post Secret" based on the community mail art project, PostSecret, earning a score of 96.9. They became the first color guard in Florida to be crowned champions in the Scholastic World Class. In 2012, they again earned the Scholastic World Championship title with their show "Project Innocence", derived from the Innocence Project, earning a 95.5. That year they also became the first ever Scholastic World Guard to take home the Fans’ Favorite Award in Dayton, Ohio at the 2012 WGI World Championships.

In 2009, it won the silver medal in the ADLA Scholastic World Championship with a show entitled "Imagine", and in 2010 took the gold again with its show "From the Ashes".

The Winter Percussion Ensemble won the Scholastic World Gold Medal at the Winterguard International World Championships in 2004, finishing 2nd in 2005. In 2006, Centerville was the only high school to produce two finalist lines, the World Line (5th, Scholastic World) and the A-Line (10th, Scholastic A). The Centerville Jazz Band is the subject of a film documentary From the 50 Yard Line. The orchestra program at CHS consists of its Symphonic Orchestra, as well as the Concert Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra (Quartet), and an Alternative Strings program (which plays bluegrass, jazz, and electronic music).

The Winter Drumline was also a Scholastic World Class Finalist at WGI World Championships in 2012. They were the 2008 WGI Scholastic A Troy Regional Champions and the 2010 WGI Scholastic Open Troy Regional Champions. The WBHS Winter Guard were the 2014 MCGC Scholastic AA State Champions.

In many places there is also a middle school class, often called Cadet. Scholastic A teams tend to be a step above the regional level and are the lowest level to compete in WGI. Scholastic Open teams are an intermediate level for competition. The Scholastic World division includes the highest caliber of winter guard teams.

Because not every color guard has the same skill level, population, or resources available, WGI uses a class division system to help remedy this. There are two divisions, Scholastic and Independent. These divisions include the classes (in descending order) Independent: Independent World Class, Independent Open Class, Independent A Class. Scholastic: Scholastic World, Scholastic Open, Scholastic National A Class, Scholastic Regional A, AA, and AAA.

The Jazz Ensemble is the 2002 and 2005 Lakeside Jazz Festival Grand Champions and has achieved 12 years of consecutive straight Superior ratings at The Florida Bandmasters Association district and state Jazz Festival. The Winter Guard/Dance Ensemble are Winter Guard International World Championship Finalists for 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2011 in the Scholastic World division. The Winter Guard is the first scholastic World Class Winter Guard in the history of Pinellas County to make the Finals at the World Championship in Dayton, Ohio. In 2012, the Outdoor Performance Ensemble was selected to be 1 of 10 bands marching in the 2013 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City One of 15 high school jazz ensembles in the nation to be selected to participate in the Essentially Ellington festival at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Homestead's Winter Percussion (also known as Indoor percussion ensemble) has competed in the California Color Guard Circuit (CCGC), WGI, the Northern California Percussion Alliance (NCPA), and San Joaquin Valley Color Guard and Percussion Review (SJVCGPR) circuits. Homestead's percussion ensemble is the CCGC 2010 Scholastic World Division Champion, and placed 15th, 7th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 8th in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019 respectively at WGI world championships in Dayton, Ohio.

There are many colleges and universities that sponsor their own winter guards as well, but these guards typically compete as Independent guards. Scholastic guards vary greatly in their ability and resources because they are more dependent on support from sources other than the members themselves, such as their school's band and school funding. In the Scholastic division, there are three classes: Scholastic A, Scholastic Open, and Scholastic World. More divisions may exist at the local/regional level, such as Regional A, or Novice.

When the guard competed at world championships, they placed 4th with a 93.3, missing the bronze by three tenths of a point. In 2010, the guard began to compete in Scholastic World, the highest class of competition. Locally, the Color Guard has dominated the Keystone Indoor Drill Association's Blue Class for years, however recently a new Platinum Class has been created for colorguards of this caliber. In 2011, Sal Salas, Joe Heininger, Kristy Templin and Jeff Kahley joined together to design the shows.

Leigh High School Winter Percussion was formed in 2005 and started performing in the California Colorguard Circuit (CCGC) percussion competitions. The ensemble was temporarily disbanded in 2008 midway through the season by the administration for unknown reasons, but members continued to perform in conjunction with students from nearby Branham High School in 2009 with a combined winter percussion ensemble. In 2010, the Leigh Winter Percussion ensemble was re-formed, performing in Percussion Scholastic A class competition. In 2013, under the direction of new Caption Head Daniel Recoder, the ensemble started competing in the Percussion Scholastic Open class. In 2014, the ensemble began competing in the Northern California Percussion Alliance (NCPA) circuit and took their first trip to Winter Guard International (WGI) Percussion World Championships in Dayton, Ohio, performing in the Percussion Scholastic Open. In 2016, the ensemble returned to Dayton, OH for the WGI Percussion World Championships where they finished 14th in Percussion Scholastic World class.
