West Indies Mahogany is native to southern Florida, and is protected by state, federal and international conservation laws. Among various provisions, the Lacey Act of 1900 prohibits trade in plants that have been illegally taken, transported or sold, and requires a documented chain of possession for plant products sold in the United States. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) lists S. mahagoni in Appendix II (only saw-logs, sawn wood and veneers). The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies S. mahagoni as Endangered.

Olympian collided with the tug Virgil T. Price at 8:50 p.m. on December 6, 1891, in Seattle. Olympian, running under Captain Ole A. Anderson (1843-1912), was coming to the City dock, but somehow veered into the coal bunkers at Colman Dock, at the foot of Madison Street. Precisely how the accident happened was not immediately clear, but it seemed that the wind had shifted and carried the Olympian straight into the Virgil T. Price at a speed of about , breaking two floating saw logs and cutting the Price completely in two.

McLaren sued Caldwell's firm, B. Caldwell & Son, to restrain them from passing or floating timber and saw logs through his slides. Caldwell claimed that McLaren was unable to prevent the use of the river for the passage of his logs because of the statutes in force in Ontario. McLaren, however, asserted that he had the right to do so under the common law. In support of Caldwell, Ontario Premier Oliver Mowat arranged the passage of the Rivers and Streams Act, 1881 which required the unobstructed passage of logs, timber, rafts, etc.

Although smaller firewood splitters are intended for home, there are now many commercial units available. Some commercial splitters are part of a 'firewood processor' that saw logs of timber into lengths, split them, and then carry the wood up an inclined conveyor onto a pile or into a bag, truck or trailer. Specialty producers such as those producing maple syrup use units that split 4 foot lengths. Machines that split and point wood for fence post also exist though they are few in number as it is generally safer and more convenient to saw the posts.

At 3:00 a.m on January 5, 1891, after the elite sternwheeler Telephone, with William E. Larkins (1857-1908) in command, sank following a collision with the breakwater at the mouth of the Willamette River, the eighty-five passengers of Telephone were taken off by Bonita, transferred to Undine and then carried into Portland. When Telephone did not arrive on time in Portland, there were concerns that the boat had been sunk, perhaps in the middle of the river by colliding with one of the many large snags or saw logs that were common at that time. When Undine came into the dock at Portland at 10:15 a.m.
