TWD has made the audience painfully aware that the Saviors have to be fought, so why does it keep wasting our time on a pitifully unlikable character's journey toward that same, tired conclusion?
When one of the Saviors escapes in the truck, there's a momentary sense that there's some real gravity to the situation — perhaps it's Michonne and Rosita's failure that sets Negan's comeback into motion!
But those waiting to find out what's happened to their crossbow-wielding hero -- and get a peek into what life is like for the Saviors -- will finally get some answers in Sunday's episode.

While Maggie is inheriting knowledge that will allow her to rebuild society, Rick goes off on a solo vendetta mission to kill Negan, whom he spots traveling with a small army of Saviors.
Dwight pulled a major assist by leading a group of Saviors into an ambush by Daryl, Michonne, Tara, and Rosita, then shooting at his own people before being discovered and clipped by Laura.
The only real groundwork that was laid for the rest of the season, which will include Rick's departure from the show, is that there are some Saviors who are still loyal to Negan.
The cowardly engineer seems a little too comfortable bossing people around at the Saviors' HQ, but McDermitt doesn't think he's actively trying to betray his friends—or to help them, for that matter.
What we don't often get is a full-on action movie infiltration scene, but when they approach the mysterious compound of Negan and The Saviors (album coming this Christmas), we get exactly that.
Daryl gains the upper hand in the form of a rocket launcher and takes out the bad guys but we know this is far from the last we'll see of the sadistic Saviors.

In the last episode, we saw Saviors tending a herd of walkers, which may or may not be the same herd the Alexandrians loosed from the quarry at the beginning of Season 6.

After he gets shot in the side and tossed off a sniper perch by Jadis, Rick finds himself and Carl at gunpoint as the rest of the remaining survivors are rounded up by the Saviors.

That is on full display in "The Damned," which shows a number of the more mindful characters struggling with the principles of nonviolence and mercy as they plan to clinically neutralize the Saviors' remote outposts.

Even after Gabriel tries to pull a firearm on Negan, the leader of Saviors still refuses to get violent, illustrating that he's willing to go to great lengths to prove that he's capable of pragmatism and mercy.
While Rick, Michonne, and the others hide in some underground sewers to avoid the Saviors' firebombing of Alexandria, Morgan and Carol embark on a quest to free Ezekiel and clear a path to safety for the Kingdom.
It's not the worst move if your plan is to brutally take out all of the remaining Saviors, innocent worker bees included, but it's definitely going to sow the seeds of discord in their previously peaceful community.
It's well-known within Walking Dead fandom that in the comic, Negan concocts a plan to dip the Saviors' weapons in walker guts in order to infect his enemies — even those with just minor nicks or cuts.
Rick, Maggie, Daryl, and nearly every other high-level character on the show walk into a giant field, thinking they're about to turn the tables on the Saviors when they suddenly hear Negan's voice on a loudspeaker.

It was a bleak bummer of an episode that filled in the gaps from last week, depicting Carol and Maggie's capture by a small group of Saviors, followed by their imprisonment in a former (and current) slaughterhouse.
The episode's other loose ends, however, aren't nearly as satisfying Khary Payton's Ezekiel has been a solid scene stealer throughout this season, despite being frequently portrayed as woefully unprepared to deal with the Saviors' hubris and violence.
Several of these artists had what might be called, for lack of a better word, saviors: individuals who encountered their work, recognized its significance and were instrumental in preserving it and bringing it to a broader audience.
Introduced as the shady leader of the Hilltop, usurped by Maggie and ejected when he attempted to sell his comrades out to the Saviors, both his former allies and Negan's forces regard him as persona non grata.
I think the arguments about how white Scorsese's characters are in this movie are interesting (especially since he took some flack in his last film, Silence, for its focus on "white saviors" instead of the Japanese characters).
But first we opened with still more abuse for Richard, the aggro Eeyore of the Kingdom, who went on to squander our sympathies by trying to sacrifice Carol in order to provoke a war with the Saviors.
We arrived at the Sanctuary in the back of a supply truck as Carl quickly revealed just how ill-conceived his invasion was, essentially brandishing a gun and asking the Saviors to let him shoot their leader.
It's clear that this — the Alexandrian alliance's first stand against the Saviors — is where the show has been stashing part of its budget, leading to lots of big confrontations that occurred off-screen, to the show's detriment.
At Alexandria, Dwight (Austin Amelio), who arrived in a cliffhanger last episode, reveals that Negan has learned of Rick's plans to resist, and that he's bringing a group of 20 or so saviors to fight the Alexandrians.
When the Saviors send a booby trapped car into the Hilltop camp, attracting walkers with music and fire, Maggie doesn't sit back and let Sasha and Jesus kick all the ass, despite doctor's orders to take it easy.
Viserion's death reminds us that Daenerys' (Emilia Clarke) dragons are not a deus ex machina — they can be killed just like any other living thing, and can even be used as a weapon against the saviors of Westeros.
Our heroes may not have any sorghum or livestock but they do have muscle, though the fact that they seem so arrogant about it going into a confrontation with the Saviors probably means there's a reckoning coming soon.
Though Daryl is briefly run off the road by gunfire, Rick manages to get close enough to the Saviors' car to jump out his vehicle, where he stabs the driver and sends him full-speed into the asphalt.
It's only when it is too late to alter course that the Saviors realize that Aaron's plan all along was to let those downed men and women turn, creating a zombie threat within their own lines of defense.
And as that infrastructure of the city retreats from us, leaving us with dry faucets, no roads or dial tone, and little in the way of saviors, a new notion of our mortality begins to dawn on us.

After Benjamin gives Morgan a painting and Richard brags about his "perfect" life before society's collapse — reminding Morgan of his lost family no doubt — a group from the Kingdom goes to meet the Saviors to make an offering.
In fact, so many people have done the same thing I almost felt sorry for her when Labour MP David Lammy called her out by name for it after pleading for an end to the white saviors complex.
Then two saviors will arise: "the awaited one," or Mahdi, a divinely guided caliph who will unite and empower Muslims, followed by a bygone prophet who will come back to earth to support the Mahdi and defeat evil.

Rick then told Michonne everything he'd been feeling about Glenn's death and going to war with the Saviors, which actually seemed a whole lot healthier than the jingoistic fervor the Grimes Gang felt before their big fight last year.
Despite Rosita's knowledge of the inside of the Saviors' compound (gained from Carl and Daryl) and Sasha's knowledge of the outside (gained from Jesus), the women acknowledged that this would be a one-way trip for both of them.
But just as Carol had regained the mental strength to go to war — knowing she would likely lose people that she loves — Morgan had lost it completely, and was planning to leave town to take on the Saviors solo.
So as Daryl had an emotional conversation with Michonne about how the risk of dying to ensure the defeat of the Saviors was worth it for him, some alarms surely started going off in the minds of comic fans.
It has become easier for candidates such as Patrick and former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg, who has not yet officially entered the race, to pitch themselves as potential saviors to centrists, even as uncertainty ripples through the left.

That's why it's particularly delicious that, although The Kingdom doesn't dare rise up against Negan (yet), they still offer a subtle form of rebellion by fattening the pigs they tithe to the Saviors with rotting walker flesh rather than fresh food.
Maybe Carol will adopt some new, previously explored shades of grey moral philosophy, but the way she disposes of the saviors seems like The Walking Dead just wants her to ping-pong between the only two shades of morality she knows.
But the scene makes it clear that Alexandria knows exactly how to switch gears when necessary and use the kind of threat tactics you'd expect the group to be capable of by now, especially if they're to take on the Saviors.
It's a good question, and a reminder that even though Negan and the Saviors have given Rick and friends more immediate concerns, the larger ethical questions behind The Walking Dead will still need to be answered after the bloodshed ends.
The flashback reveals that Gregory's attempt to get his community to abandon Rick, Maggie, and the others was a sort of peace offering to Negan and the Saviors — though we know from previous episodes that the effort was ultimately futile.
After last week took viewers to The Kingdom and focused the action on Carol (Melissa McBride) and Morgan (Lennie James), this episode followed Daryl as he ventured into The Sanctuary, home to villain Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his Saviors.
However, on "Do Not Send Us Astray," viewers are forced to contend with one of TWD's silliest, campiest, and most illogical plot lines: the infected weapons that Negan and the Saviors have been talking up for a few episodes now.

That purpose appears to be pretty high up in the ranks, as he not only orders reinforcements, but orders the Saviors that are fighting Aaron and the Alexandrians outside to retreat and come take care of Rick and anyone else inside.
Negan, being the clever strategist he is, doesn't want to waste any lives, as he's explained in the past how distasteful he finds unnecessary killing when it's much more resource-efficient to keep people in line and producing for the Saviors.
That's where "Hostiles and Calamities" — the 11th episode of The Walking Dead's seventh season — leaves us: with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) once again strutting around threatening people at the Saviors' compound, while both Dwight and Eugene arrive at simultaneous moral crossroads.
His season-ending plan didn't end in total disaster, but his group still lost a key player in Sasha, and found out that the (literal) garbage people they made a pact with had turned on them and aligned with Negan's Saviors.
At worst, it's a testament to the brutal year that At The Drive-In managed to survive, one they emerged from stronger and reunited with their co-founder Jim Ward, and ready to take their rightful place as emo's volatile saviors.
Of course, everybody's least-favorite Negan of all the Negans pleaded with Sasha to join the Saviors, noting that he himself had only done so because Abraham's death robbed him of all hope that the good guys — the "survivors" — could win.
First and foremost, by the end of the night Rick's crew was in far better shape to take on the Saviors than they were last week, having found a lovely arsenal of 63 military-grade weapons in a hopeless place.

But AMC has taken pity on us and released an intriguing new synopsis for the next batch of episodes in which Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and his group prepare to take the fight to Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his Saviors.

During season eight of the "Walking Dead," as Rick's people were killing groups of Saviors, actor Juan Gabriel Pareja, who reprised his role as Morales briefly, also questioned whether or not Rick's group were the good guys in the zombie apocalypse.
But since no one at Hilltop listens to Gregory now that Maggie, Sasha, and Jesus are their unofficial ruling triumvirate, a small group of them quietly approached Rick's team and promised to fight the Saviors if given proper training. Great!
But the significance of the sequence, aside from reuniting Daryl with his precious, was that it revealed that the Saviors know all about Alexandria and convinced Carol that if she didn't want to kill anymore, she'd have to leave town.
His encounter with the Oceansiders in the woods feels a bit remote from the main plot, and in this week's episode it plays more like a skipped beat in the steady escalation of the enmity between the Saviors and the coalition.
Meanwhile, enjoying the government's discomfort is a veritable who's who of the worst days of post-Soviet, mujahideen factionalism in the early 1990s — a time that gave rise to and led many Afghans to initially embrace the Taliban as saviors.
The Walking Dead After eight weeks of subjugation by the Saviors, Alexandria began its rebound on Sunday's "Walking Dead," as Rick resumed his hero's mantle and embarked on a campaign of coalition building, explosives commandeering, zombie mowing and enigmatic smiling.
The Saviors are still a little vague as a threat, but "The Same Boat" shades their internal dynamics and community in a way that makes them feel more important, just as what might be the last of their ranks are destroyed.
The Hilltoppers and the Kingdomers finalize their decision to join the Alexandria alliance, but Morgan (Lennie James) has his own ideas; he outfits himself in the combat gear of a dead friend in preparation for a solo ambush against the Saviors.
After the holiday sales and seasonal releases comes all the 2019 newness, and we've had our eyes on upcoming products since last month — so we couldn't wait to try out some of the innovations, cheap thrills, and winter saviors on our lists.
Later in the episode he pulls out a map and asks to be driven somewhere, which can only mean he's headed to the Saviors to take Simon up on his offer to help him out should there be any unrest at Hilltop.
Now, I don't want to get too tinfoil hat here, but it just seems awfully convenient that Simon would set up such a deal, particularly when everybody watching the show is expecting some sort of showdown between Team Rick and the Saviors.
Not only does his "maybe we don't need to kill anyone" philosophy feel a little starker in the face of what Rick and company do to the Saviors, but his commitment to what he believes has weathered that earlier test and stood firm.
While Daryl (Norman Reedus) attempted to let Dwight (Austin Amelio) live, that decision ultimately proved costly as the guy who left the Saviors — only to be recaptured and see half his face burned off by Negan — returned and killed Denise (Merritt Wever).
In a scene spliced straight out of a Hollywood action blockbuster, Rick and Daryl manage to intercept the Saviors' truck just as Carol lets them get away, with Daryl on his bike and Rick in the jeep they commandeered in last week's episode.
And the last time Rick involved Jadis in a showdown with the Saviors his son almost died, so why he thinks it's such a great idea to include her – instead of, say, just killing the Scavengers and taking their guns — is beyond me.
Cunning: We still don't know how Negan came up with his plan to infect the Saviors' weapons using zombie guts or why in the world it suddenly works out of the blue without any explanation or past story-world evidence to support it.
Meanwhile, the show cuts back to the Saviors, where a conversation between Negan and Gabriel reveals that map Rick has just found is also a fake, a backup decoy just in case the original plan to use Dwight to spread disinformation didn't take.
Still, it wasn't until this past June when another baby in Georgia was heartlessly abandoned in a plastic bag in the woods, with her bloody umbilical cord attached to her body, that Jones became inspired to start searching for her saviors, Yahoo!
Rick knows it's impossible for all of them to survive the Saviors, and he feels like total crap about it, but he knows it's worth it if Carl, Judith, and the other youngsters can one day enjoy a happier future sans Negan.
The group is out of ammo and without anyone willing to stand up to aggressors, Gregory has agreed to the terms of Negan's protection racket, which appears to be the Saviors' main way of subsisting without doing any cultivation of its own.
However, this often tempts fans to play towards the unfortunate tendency of framing Japandroids as saviors or avatars of rock music itself; branding their fans as prima facie rockist reactionaries, even though they likely listen to Migos or Frank Ocean like Japandroids do.
But, of course, neither does Amazon really want to promote progressive values beyond the superficial ones, and the lesson of the HQ2 scramble is that cities shouldn't put quite so much hope on Amazon or other large companies as a capitalist saviors.

"Every day since I put Negan in that cell, I have this moment, usually right when I wake up, this feeling that I should go down there and kill him, [and] to keep going and finish them all [the Saviors]," Rick said.
Our villains take the form of angry landlords, bills, social anxiety, and guilt, but deep in a VR demo of fantasy fighting game Circle of Saviors, she sees only problems that can be solved with a quick dodge and a firm horizontal slash.

It didn't get any better from there, as Rick and the Gang (along with the rest of us) endured seven more weeks of misery and subjugation by the new baddie Negan and his Saviors, before finally seeming to rebound in the midseason finale.
What we're left with, in the current plot in which Rick tries to unite various survivor groups against Negan's predatory Saviors, are platitudes about community building and the ethics of self-preservation, swathed in the show's always evocative cinematography and high production values.
It is here that Husain's "Lightning" reminds us of not only social history but contemporary politics, where democratic leaders of the country exercise massive agency that can either elevate their status as saviors of the land or forever malign them as war-mongers.
Given how seriously the decision to attack the Saviors was treated by the group last season, it seems as though they've now just become largely callous versions of the thing they're trying to defeat, and they kinda know but don't really care.
But the point is that The Walking Dead has done a good job of suggesting that maybe "Negan" is just a name the various Saviors use to plant the idea of a terrifying, monstrous figure who does horrible things without receiving comeuppance.
Nick: While Gregory is off losing his doctor to Simon and the Saviors, Daryl and Maggie are hiding in an underground food storage locker, having run of out of time to make it to the same secret passageway Sasha and Rosita used to escape.
The show batted around the idea of turning him into a villain, giving him a crisis of conscience with the Dwight storyline and having him push the boundaries of the group's use of violence in the lead-up to and during the Saviors war.
Rick's plan to preemptively kill off the Saviors seems to have backfired, with the large numbers of them who keep pouring out of the woods, and he may have found himself stuck with a conflict that he started but didn't expect to run this long.
But little does he know that another group is marching dozens of captured fighters toward the Hilltop, setting up a potential conflict between the mourning Aaron, who just lost his partner to the Saviors, and the merciful Jesus who wants to keep them safely imprisoned.
The Saviors and Rick's group clash, Rick's group ends up in trouble, and to send a message, Negan randomly picks one person from Rick's group to kill: Negan's dark game of "eenie meenie" ends on Glenn, whom he then beats to death with Lucille.
That aspect of his character has been more or less dormant since the showdown with the cannibals at Terminus in season 5, but here Rick convinces the Saviors that he, like Maggie, wants to integrate them into the Hilltop and create a better community.
It appears he intends to surprise Simon, but those plans will undoubtedly be complicated by yet another reveal: Daryl and Rosita are shown off in the distance, hatching a plan to kill Eugene in order to bring the Saviors' bullet-making operation to a halt.
He knows that killing the Saviors is necessary, but the trauma of Glenn's murder has him losing sleep — and trying to put off the fight for as long as he can, so he can spend what might be his final days with his loved ones.
When Richard failed to inform Ezekiel of his role in Benjamin's death or of his plan of attack before their drop the next day, Morgan re-gained the Saviors' trust himself — by brutally beating and strangling Richard to death in front of the entire group.
Among the elite we see a rise of one flavor of authoritarianism, with "the generals" (Chief of Staff John Kelly, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, and National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster) being praised as saviors who will preserve the government from Trump's dereliction of duty.
It's a telling moment for Negan's character, as it seems the man is not interested in growing his reach and ruling over more of the post-apocalypse, but rather he seems to earnestly want to keep and maintain the stability the Saviors enjoyed before Rick.
To briefly recap: The finale ended with 11 members of Rick's team captured by the group known as the Saviors and kneeling before its leader, Negan, who menaced them with his signature weapon — a barbed-wire-wrapped bat named Lucille — before selecting his target.
Like always, Carol did whatever necessary to survive and protect her cohorts, and did so in particularly brutal fashion, shooting Bizarro Maggie at close range and flambéing other Saviors with that cigarette-flicked-into-gasoline trick that only works in movies and TV shows.
He assures them this fight with The Saviors is inevitable, that even if they hadn't made a deal with Gregory that Negan and his cronies would eventually find them and try to jack all their supplies, not to mention kill them along the way.
This was merely one of hundreds of small last ditch efforts being undertaken by would-be saviors of humanity in the face of burning out and all that feeling seemed to well up in me as I prepared to leave the comfort of the vessel.
