To the west of the national motorway is the Cabeço da Bruxinha, a hilltop separated by a depression, some from the castle of Alpiarça. The castle of Alpiarça corresponds to large castro, approximately , encircled by a large wall of stone and sand, covered by vegetation, with zones of discontinuity to the southeast, that may refer to the former entryways to the site.

Man dwarfed by heavy surf near Miami In northern Dade County, being south of the eye, damage was considered minimal and confined mainly to oceanfront structures, plate-glass windows, electrical lines, and vegetation, although large waves piled sand deep in oceanfront streets and tides in northern Biscayne Bay ran above normal. Strong winds unroofed the 11,000-seat Hialeah race track, damaging its barns and paddocks and leaving many of its famed flamingos missing. Miami Beach suffered the greatest losses in the county, estimated at 1947 US$4,000,000, as many of the 334 resort hotels as well as homes and apartments were battered by waves. There, a three-to-four-ft-deep (0.9-to-1.2-m) layer of sand covered many oceanfront grounds, and nearby neighborhoods on the Venetian Islands, like Belle Isle, were flooded to a depth of several feet.

Phallus indusiatus was initially described by French naturalist Étienne Pierre Ventenat in 1798, and sanctioned under that name by Christiaan Hendrik Persoon in 1801. One author anonymously gave his impressions of Ventenat's discovery in an 1800 publication: > This beautiful species, which is sufficiently characterised to distinguish > it from every other individual of the class, is copiously produced in Dutch > Guiana, about 300 paces from the sea, and nearly as far from the left bank > of the river of Surinam. It was communicated to me by the elder > Vaillant,Father of the more famous François Levaillant, explorer and > ornithologist, the elder Levaillant was a merchant of Metz who served as > French consul in Dutch Guiana until 1763. who discovered it in 1755 on some > raised ground which was never overflowed by the highest tides, and is formed > of a very fine white sand, covered with a thin stratum of earth.

After World War I, the U.S. Navy planned a transatlantic crossing by a division of four Curtiss NC seaplanes. Navy Ensign Rodd helped to develop the radio compass for these aircraft. Three seaplanes began the journey on 8 May 1919, but only the NC-4 completed the trip successfully. In the aftermath, he was made a knight of the Order of the Tower and Sword by the Portuguese government on 2 June 1919. As a member of the NC-4 crew, he was awarded the Navy Cross and later received a Congressional Gold Medal in 1929. On 15–16 August 1927, Navy Lieutenants Rodd and Byron James Connell (12 August 1894 – 30 January 1972) flew a PN-10 seaplane for 20 hours, 45 minutes and 40 seconds on a 25-km triangular course until their fuel tanks ran dry. Their flight with Aviation Machinist's Mate Comar Vincent and a cargo of 500 kg of sand covered 2,525.3 km (about 1,568 miles). Lt. Connell had previously been the pilot on Cmdr.

The Beach division, played on a smaller sand-covered surface with fewer players per side than the grass format, was officially added by USA Ultimate in May 2015 with the introduction of a national championship tournament in Virginia Beach, VA. The event returned in 2016, and the division added the US Beach Open event in Santa Monica, CA, in November 2016. In 2017, the division will return both of those events as well as a third new Beach Western Championship event in April in Santa Monica, CA. Four geographic regions have been established for the East Coast, Great Lakes, Gulf Coast, and West, each with an assigned resident Regional Director volunteer staff position. However, regional championships have not yet been presented as viable, until the division grows further in size and popularity. Outreach efforts were established to promote the sand format and point out to organizers that existing sand volleyball courts can be used for modified formats in places that are not coastal or accessible to large public areas of natural flat sand, such as coasts and beaches.
