Charles "The Ox" Reiser (1878 - October 10, 1921) was a safecracker as well as a mentor to many of the organized crime leaders of the early 20th century including Dean O'Banion, George "Bugs" Moran, Earl "Hymie" Weiss , and John Mahoney. He was born in 1878; very little is known of Reiser's early life. However, Reiser quickly started a rap sheet. In 1902, Reiser was arrested for safecracking.

Jeff Sitar was a locksmith living in Clifton, New Jersey who specialized as a safe-cracker and who has won the Lockmaster's International Safecracking Competition eight times. He is known for the opening of a safe on board USS Ling and for opening a highly classified safe on board the SS Bellatrix during the Gulf War. Jeff appeared on the Discovery Channel's show "More Than Human" where he demonstrated his skills. Jeff also appeared on Modern Marvels in 2010 in the episode "Keep Out".

Andrew "The Barron" Von Etter (1940–1967) was a Boston mobster and an associate of loanshark Edward "Wimpy" Bennett and brothers James "Jimmy the Bear" Flemmi and Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi. Born in Palanga, Lithuania, Andrew's immigrated with his parents to the United States in 1947. He soon became involved in criminal activity and, in 1962, was eventually arrested for safecracking while working as a part-time security guard. He would also be arrested in Dearborn Square, Roxbury that same year, an area controlled by Edward "Wimpy" Bennett, Stephen Flemmi and Vincent Flemmi.

In 1989 following a committee decision, the last Communist president of Afghanistan, Mohammad Najibullah had ordered the hoard moved from the museum to an underground vault at the Central Bank of Afghanistan in Kabul. The doors of the vault were locked with keys which were distributed to five trusted individuals. In 2003, after the Taliban was deposed, the new government wanted to open the vault, but the keyholders (called "tawadars") could not be summoned because their names were purposefully unknown. Hamid Karzai had to issue a decree authorizing the attorney general to go ahead with safecracking.
