Doncourt was born in Flushing, Queens on December 10, 1955. His father was Carlton R. Doncourt, who served as a captain in the Homicide Bureau of the New York City Police Department, and his mother was Ruthene Staples Doncourt. His sister was Carol Doncourt DeFrancesco. They moved to Islip Terrace, Long Island in 1963.

In the southern area, the majority of the population are Romanians. There are also some Hungarians, Rusyns (Ukrainians), Zipser Germans, Jews, and Roma. In the northern area, the majority are Ruthenes, with smaller Romanian, Hungarian and German communities. In the northern area most people speak the Ruthene language, while in the southern area most speak Romanian, which is why the region was split into two parts.

Mon Talisman was a bay horse with a narrow white blaze bred in France by Guillermo Ham. He was sired by Craig an Eran, the winner of the 1921 2000 Guineas and Eclipse Stakes, His grandsire Sunstar won the 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby in 1911 before becoming a successful stud; apart from Craig an Eran, notable offspring included the 1917 Epsom Oaks Sunny Jane. Mon Talisman's dam Ruthene was a half-sister of the leading sprinter Ethnarch and a great-granddaughter of Scene, an influential broodmare whose other descendants have included Animal Kingdom. During his racing career, Mon Talisman was owned by the Argentinian Miguel Edouard Martinez de Hoz and was trained in France by Frank Carter.

With the Bull Sollemni Conventione of June 5, 1930, Catholic Hierarchy of both rites was established all over the territory of the Romanian Kingdom; it was then that the creation of a new Diocese, of Maramureș was decided. Its centre was to be at Baia Mare and it was suffragan of the Metropolitanate of Alba Iulia and Făgăraș. The Diocese of Maramureș included 201 Romanian parishes and all the 38 Ruthene parishes existing on Romanian territory. It was laid under the temporary administration of Dr. Iuliu Hossu, the Bishop of Cluj-Gherla. The first Bishop of this Diocese, appointed by the Holy See on October 16, 1930, with the approval of the Romanian Government, was Dr. Alexandru Rusu, consecrated on January 30, 1931 and enthroned in his Cathedral on February 2, 1931.

The term Rusyns (rusyny) is derived from Rus' (Ruthenia) and has been widely used for centuries for East Slavs inhabiting Carpathian Rus'. Since the 18th century, after the Partitions of Poland the term Ruthenian "came to be associated primarily with those Ukrainians who lived under the Habsburg monarchy" (since 1843 used as an official designation in the Austrian Empire) and since early 20th century "became even more restricted: it was generally used to refer to the inhabitants of Transcarpathia and to Transcarpathian emigrants in the United States", for whom the terms Rusyn and Carpatho-Rusyn are more commonly used since the 1970s. In the Kingdom of Hungary, officially the term Ruthenians was used for the Rusyns of Transcarpathia until 1945. The terms Rusyn, Ruthenes, Rusniak, Lemak, Lyshak, and Lemko are considered by some scholars to be historic, local and synonymical names for the inhabitants of Transcarpathia; others hold that the terms Lemko and Rusnak are simply regional variations of Rusyn or Ruthene.
