A graduate of University of Michigan and Carnegie Mellon University, Goldberg scripted the films Cool Runnings, Little Giants and Snow Dogs. Goldberg died October 2, 2014, of brain and sinus cancer at age 55. His funeral was held on October 6, in Philadelphia.
David Lovgren (born November 4, 1969) is a Canadian actor. He had a recurring role in the espionage series Intelligence. He graduated in theatre at Studio 58, Langara College in Vancouver and began acting at the age of 17. Lovgren appeared in the feature films Cool Runnings (1993), Live Bait (1995) and Antitrust (2001).
Silver Buck (1972–1984) was an Irish-bred racehorse who became a champion steeplechaser when trained in England by the Dickinson family. He was the winner of the 1982 Cheltenham Gold Cup, and the 1979 and 1980 runnings of the King George VI Chase. He was voted National Hunt Horse of the Year in 1982.

Something of an anomaly in Midwestern America, For Against—especially early in its career—has looked to a distinctly British aesthetic for inspiration, most obviously the post-punk scene exemplified by the early rosters of the Factory and 4AD record labels. Featuring members of underground Lincoln bands Cartoon Pupils and Hymn to Joy, the band first called itself Glue, and then D.B.L., finally settling on Four Against One, a name that reflected its status as a quintet at the time. Bassist Liz Panarelli's early departure gave way to keyboardist Jeffrey Runnings' shift to bass, as well as the band's truncation of its name to For Against. By 1985, singer Jon Fynbu had departed as well, leaving the core trio of guitarist Harry Dingman III, drummer Gregory Hill and bassist Jeffrey Runnings.

Thomas Goodisson (1782–1840) was a four times Epsom Derby winning British jockey. He was the son of Dick Goodisson, the jockey who won the first three runnings of The Oaks. Blast of Storm (foaled 1996 in Ireland) was a Barbadian Thoroughbred racehorse who was the first horse to win three consecutive runnings of the Barbados Gold Cup. Trained by William C. Marshall for owner Lady Sally Arbib, Blast of storm was ridden by Jono Jones in all three of his Gold Cup wins. Retired from racing, Blast of storm entered stud in Barbados in 2003.

Mother Goose (foaled 1922 in Kentucky) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who was named the American Co-Champion Two-Year-Old Filly of 1924. From the 128 runnings of the Belmont Futurity Stakes since its inception in 1888, through 2019 Mother Goose is one of only thirteen fillies to have ever won the event. The Mother Goose Stakes at New York's Belmont Park is named in her honor.

Pay Up was sired by Fairway, an outstanding racehorse who won the St Leger, the Eclipse Stakes and two runnings of the Champion Stakes. At stud his other winners included Blue Peter, Watling Street, Garden Path, Tide-way and Fair Trial.

In 1962 Rutan and Riley were on their way for a third place overall, first in class, until the halfshaft of the PV544 broke. The Little Le Mans race folded after the 1962 edition. Riley and Rutan also competed in the first three runnings of the 12 Hours of Marlboro. In 1961 Riley and Rutan led the race but an extra pitstop dropped the Volvo PV544 entry to second place overall.

Howard's Argentine bred Ligorati set a new track record of 1:50 for the miles feature on the dirt track before a crowd of 60,000 at Hollywood Park Racetrack. The event was regularly scheduled for many of its runnings on the Fourth of July holiday attracting massive crowds especially in the 1950s and 1960s. In the early runnings, the event became a main preparatory event for the Hollywood Gold Cup. The event attracted many fine horses who went on to complete the double. These include Argentine bred Kayak II in 1939, the Irish bred Champion Noor in 1950, the 1948 Triple Crown champion Citation in 1951, Irish bred Royal Serenade in 1953, 1953 Kentucky Derby winner Swaps in 1956, Hillsdale in 1959, Prove It in 1962, South African bred Colorado King in 1964, Native Diver in 1965.
To-Agori-Mou was retired to become a breeding stallion in the United States, but appears to have attracted little interest. The most successful of his offspring was the sprinter Answer Do, who won fifteen races including the Grade II San Carlos Handicap and two runnings of the Grade III Phoenix Gold Cup. To-Agori-Mou was sold for $2,000 in 1989 and for $300 a year later. To- Agori-Mou died in 1990.
The 'official' first running of the world's most famous steeplechase, the Grand National, held annually at Aintree in England, took place in 1839. An Irish horse, Lottery, took the honours. The "National", as it is known, was run over , but since 2013 is run over . Notably, the 'Liverpool Grand Steeplechase' (to give its original name) was actually initiated in 1836, although the three earliest runnings have been overlooked in many historical chronicles.

Priam (1827-1847) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career that lasted from April 1830 to July 1832 he ran nineteen times and won seventeen races, including four walkovers. Unraced as a two-year-old he won seven of his eight starts in 1830 most notably The Derby. He continued to win major races, including successive runnings of the Goodwood Cup for the next two seasons before being retired to stud.
The Hurst Park Novices' Chase was a National Hunt novice chase in England. It was run at Ascot over a distance of 2 miles (3,218 metres), and it was scheduled to take place each year in November. The race was first run in 1965 and was run for the last time in 1987. It usually attracted a good quality field but the number of runners was consistently low (total of 50 in last ten runnings).
John Runnings (22 August 1917 – 25 April 2004) was a peace protester also known as the "Wall Walker". Partly inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's work and nonviolent resistance in general, he is notable for his series of one-man protests against the Berlin Wall during the 1980s. These culminated in the construction of a largely symbolic, car-mounted battering ram. This particular action landed him with an 18-month prison sentence from the East German authorities.

The 2003 Cheltenham Gold Cup was a horse race which took place at Cheltenham on Thursday 13 March 2003. It was the 75th running of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and it was won by the pre-race favourite Best Mate. The winner was ridden by Jim Culloty and trained by Henrietta Knight. Best Mate became the first horse to win consecutive runnings of the Gold Cup since L'Escargot in 1970 and 1971.

The nickname was coined by Johan Lange in 2000, while both Lange and Jørgensen were playing for B.93. The win, in the second 100-mile Daytona 500 qualifying race, made him one of the youngest drivers ever to win in NASCAR history, in a full points-paying NASCAR race. Pearlyman (foaled 1979) was a British-bred racehorse who developed into an outstanding steeplechaser over distances of around two miles. The Ben Ali Handicap was an American Thoroughbred horserace run eleven times between 1917 and 1932 at Lexington Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky. An important race usually run in April or early May, it was open to horses age three and older of either sex. The race was run on dirt over a distance of 5 ¾ furlongs for its final two runnings prior to which it had been contested at 1 1/16 miles (8.5 furlongs).
A month later, Sun Stream returned to the July course on 8 June for the Oaks Stakes. Although the race was not run at Epsom Downs Racecourse it was given its traditional name: wartime runnings at Newmarket had been known as the "New Oaks". The relaxation of wartime restrictions on transport resulted in a huge crowd converging on Newmarket, leading to serious traffic congestion at the course. She started the 6/4 favourite in a field of sixteen fillies.

The film was released in the United States on October 1, 1993. It was Candy's last film to be released during his lifetime. It is loosely based on the true story of the Jamaica national bobsleigh team's debut in competition during the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Cool Runnings was loosely based on real life events surrounding the formation of the Jamaican bobsled team. The movie is mainly composed of fictional characters. Some of the incidents that occurred in the film were real, such as the favorites to win the four-man event beating the Swiss team (which they did), and the crash that eliminated the Jamaicans from further competition. However, there were several creative liberties taken by the filmmakers in order to complete the story.
After making his movie debut in the 1965 film A High Wind in Jamaica, Hyatt had notable performances in the films The Bushbaby (1969), Crossplot (1969), Freelance (1971), Love Thy Neighbour (1973), Club Paradise (1986), Milk and Honey (1988), The Mighty Quinn (1989), Cool Runnings (1993) and Almost Heaven (2005). The J J's Dream Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually during the first part of July at Calder Race Course in Miami Gardens, Florida. Open to two-year-old fillies, it is contested on dirt over a distance of six furlongs. Inaugurated in 1976 as the Melaleuca Stakes, it was open to three years old fillies for its first three runnings. From 1997 through 1999, the race was run as the Masao Moriya Stakes.
In 1996, the upstart Indy Racing League tested at the facility, with plans to add it to the schedule in 1997. The first test saw speeds in the 207 mph range, already an unofficial track record. Soon after the test, a night race was added to the IRL schedule starting in 1997. The event was inaugurated in 1968 as the San Simeon Handicap Due to course conditions, several runnings of the event were taken off the turf and run on the dirt track. The event was upgraded to a Grade III event for 1984. In 2013 the race was renamed to the San Simeon Stakes. The event was originally scheduled in April but the Los Angeles Turf Club in 2017 moved the race to the Memorial Day weekend at Santa Anita.
The Gold Cup was switched to the "New Course" in 1959, and this remains the regular track used for the event. In the mid-1960s, the race was dominated by Arkle, who won three consecutive runnings from 1964 to 1966. Grandma's Marathon was held annually for 43 years, making it one of the oldest continually-run marathons in the country. Sandy Bay Primary and Junior High School (previously Sandy Bay All Age) provides education for the children of Sandy Bay and neighboring Mt. Pelier. Mrs. Trenfield is the Principal of the school with Juliet Murray serving as Vice Principal. Students are housed in the old building on the right side of the campus and in the Andrew Kennedy Building on the left, completed in the 1990s. Parts of the movie Cool Runnings was filmed on the campus.

The event was established in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of a new British monarch, King Edward VII. Epsom had staged a similar race, the Epsom Gold Cup, which was open to horses aged three or older. The Coronation Cup was temporarily switched to alternative venues during wartime periods, with runnings at Newmarket (1915–16, 1943–45) and Newbury (1941). The race is contested on the first day of Epsom's two-day Derby Festival meeting, the same day as the Epsom Oaks.
Wheel of Fortune was a small but "beautiful" bay filly standing just over 15 hands high, bred at Mereworth by her owner Evelyn Boscawen, 6th Viscount Falmouth. Her sire, Adventurer won the Gold Vase at Royal Ascot and two runnings of the City and Suburban Handicap at Epsom. At stud, his other winners included the Fillies' Triple Crown winner Apology. Wheel of Fortune's dam, Queen Bertha, won the Oaks in 1863 and went on to become a successful and influential broodmare.
The Endine Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in mid September at Delaware Park Racetrack in Stanton, Delaware. A Grade III six furlong sprint on dirt, the race is open to fillies and mares age three and older. Inaugurated in 1971, the race was named in honor of Endine, a filly owned by Jane du Pont Lunger who won back-to-back runnings of the Delaware Handicap in 1958 and 1959. There was no race run from 1983 through 1995.
Alborada raced only twice as a four-year-old in 1999 as her season was disrupted by injury. On 31 July she started the 15/8 favourite for the Nassau Stakes, (run for the first time as a Group One race) but finished fifth behind the three-year-old Zahrat Dubai. Prescott could offer no explanation for the filly's poor performance. On 16 October, Alborada attempted to become the second female racecourse (after Triptych) to win consecutive runnings of the Champion Stakes.
He then returned to sprinting and won his remaining two races of 1920 and all four in 1921. His successes in this phase of his career included the King's Stand Stakes, July Cup and two runnings of the King George Stakes. At the end of 1921 he was retired from racing and returned to his birthplace in Ireland to become a breeding stallion. The 1994 Snowball Derby winner was female driver, and future NASCAR competitor, Tammy Jo Kirk. From 2011 until 2014, the Snowball was won by teenage drivers who have since won on NASCAR's national series. In the 2010s, only one driver (2015) was in his 20s and one driver (2017) was in his 30s. Over the years, the race format has varied between 100 laps, 200 laps, and a unique 300 laps plus additional laps equalling the number of runnings of this race.
Joseph Widener's father had had business interests in France and like other wealthy elite Americans of that era, maintained a place in fashionable Paris. In addition to racing horses in the United States, Widener also kept a stable of Thoroughbreds in France. Competing in French grass racing, his horses won the 1923 and 1926 editions of the Prix La Rochette and the 1923, 1924, and 1937 runnings of the Prix d'Aumale. Widener also owned English Hackney horses who competed at various shows.
Tide-way was a brown mare bred and owned by Edward Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby. During her racing career she was trained by Colledge Leader at Lord Derby's Stanley House stable in Newmarket, Suffolk. Physically, she was described as "a charming filly, perhaps a little light on the leg, but level of back and of great quality". Tide-way was sired by Fairway, an outstanding racehorse who won the St Leger, the Eclipse Stakes and two runnings of the Champion Stakes.
Kingsway was a big, good-looking bay horse, bred by Marmaduke Furness, 1st Viscount Furness. He was sired by Fairway, an outstanding racehorse who won the St Leger, the Eclipse Stakes and two runnings of the Champion Stakes. At stud his other winners included Blue Peter, Watling Street, Garden Path and Fair Trial. Kingsway's dam Yenna won minor races in France and England and had some influence as a broodmare, being the female-line ancestor of the 1000 Guineas winner Blue Bunting.
The 38 runnings of the Havre de Grace Handicap produced a number of wins by racing's top horses. The 1915 edition saw Life magazine co-founder Andrew Miller win with his future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Roamer. The 1916 winner, The Finn, had won the 1915 Belmont Stakes and earned American Champion Three-Year- Old Male Horse honors. The next year saw the 1917 Kentucky Derby winner Omar Khayyam capture the Havre de Grace Handicap, then two years later Cudgel won.

As a yearling in September 2005 Creachadoir was consigned to the Tattersalls Ireland sale and was bought for €83.000 by the trainer Jim Bolger. For most of his racing career Creachadoir was trained by Bolger in County Carlow and owned in partnership by Jackie Bolger and Ray Corcoran.
The Six Days of New York was a former six-day cycling event, held in New York City, in Madison Square Garden's velodrome. Between 1899 and 1961, a total of 73 editions were held, sometimes three per year.Gabriele, Michael C. Royal Rebel (foaled 29 March 1996) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. A gelding who excelled over extreme distance, he is best known for winning consecutive runnings of the two and a half mile Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 2001 and 2002. In a career which lasted from July 1998 until June 2005 he ran thirty-nine times and won seven races. Apart from the Gold Cup, he also won the Ballycullen Stakes, Saval Beg Stakes, Goodwood Cup and Lonsdale Stakes.
The event was established in 1982, and it was originally called the Grand Prix des Provinces. Instead of having a permanent venue, it was designed to alternate between the main regional racecourses of France. The first three editions were held at Bordeaux le Bouscat, Lyon-Parilly and Marseille-Borély. The early runnings of the Grand Prix des Provinces were contested over 2,000 metres. The event was given Group 3 status in 1984. The race was renamed in memory of André Baboin in 1986.

Birds Nest (1970-1994) was a British-bred thoroughbred racehorse. In a long career as a specialist hurdler he ran six times in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham Racecourse, finishing second to Night Nurse in 1976 and third behind Sea Pigeon and Monksfield in 1980. He won 19 hurdle races including the Fighting Fifth Hurdle and the Bula Hurdle on three occasions each. He also won the Christmas Hurdle and two runnings of the Scottish Champion Hurdle, beating some of the best hurdlers of all time.
Daiwa Major () is a retired Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse and active sire. A horse who excelled at distances of one mile to one and a quarter miles (1600-2000 metres) he won the Satsuki Shō, the first leg of the Japanese Triple Crown in 2004. His greatest success, however, came later in his career when he won several of Japan's most important weight-for-age races including the Tennō Shō, the Yasuda Kinen and two runnings of the Mile Championship. He was twice named Japan's champion miler.
Jim Rathmann (July 16, 1928 – November 23, 2011), born Royal Richard Rathmann, was an American race car driver who won the Indianapolis 500 in 1960. He drove in the AAA and USAC Championship Car series in the 1949–1950 and 1952–1963 seasons with 42 starts, including the Indianapolis 500 in each of those seasons. Rathmann also participated in the two runnings of the Race of Two Worlds at Monza, Italy, winning the 1958 event. He had 6 victories in addition to his Indy 500 win.
Petite Etoile (foaled 1956) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. In a career which lasted from June 1958 until September 1961 she won fourteen of her nineteen races and finished second in the other five. After showing promising, but unexceptional form in 1958, she improved to be the British Horse of the Year in 1959, winning all six of her races including the Classic 1000 Guineas and Epsom Oaks. She remained in training for two further seasons, winning major races including consecutive runnings of the Coronation Cup.
The Gold Cup was abandoned in 1931 (because of frost) and 1937 (flooding), but the five intervening years saw the emergence of the most successful horse in the event's history. All five races from 1932 to 1936 were won by Golden Miller, who also won the Grand National in 1934. During World War II, the Gold Cup was cancelled twice, in 1943 and 1944. The first multiple winner in the post-war era was Cottage Rake, who won the three runnings from 1948 to 1950.
Pilsudski (foaled 23 April 1992) is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse and active sire who was bred in Ireland, but trained in the United Kingdom during a racing career which lasted from 1994 to 1997. In a four-season career he progressed from winning modest handicap races to become regarded as one of the best racehorses in the world. He won eleven races in five different countries, six of them at Group One level. He also finished second in successive runnings of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
On 12 September Estimate started the 11/8 favourite for the Doncaster Cup against eleven opponents headed by Time's Up, who had won the last two runnings of the race. Moore positioned the mare just behind the leaders before moving forward in the straight. She took the lead from Brass Ring approaching the final furlong and held on in the closing stages to win by one and a quarter lengths from the six-year-old gelding Whiplash Willie with the 80/1 outsider Kalann in third.
After an international athletics career, inspired by the film Cool Runnings, he changed from track and field in 2006 to take on the challenge of bobsleigh. During his first year in the sport he became a first team regular in both the two-man and four-man events. His best finish at the FIBT World Championships was fifth in the four-man event at St. Moritz in 2007. Condon's best World Cup finish was tenth in a four-man event at Winterberg in 2008.
Queen's Hussar was a bay horse with a small white star officially bred by G. S. Stephens at the Highclere Stud. He was sired by March Past, a sprinter whose biggest win came in the Wokingham Stakes in 1954. Apart from Queen's Hussar, the best of his progeny was Major Rose, a stayer who won the Chester Cup and the Cesarewitch Handicap as well as being placed in two runnings of the Champion Hurdle. Queen's Hussar's dam Jojo won one minor race before becoming a successful broodmare.
In 2009 the event became a Grade I and after three runnings it was downgraded back to a Grade II stakes. Of the notable winners of the event are Lit de Justice who won in 1995 in stakes record time, the following year he won the Breeders' Cup Sprint. The 1996 winner Alphabet Soup used the sprint event in his campaign which led to a victory in the Breeders' Cup Classic. The 2014 winner Goldencents went on to win his second Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.
The 1991 Australian Touring Car season was the 32nd year of touring car racing in Australia since the first runnings of the Australian Touring Car Championship and the fore-runner of the present day Bathurst 1000, the Armstrong 500. There were 12 touring car race meetings held during 1991; a nine-round series, the 1991 Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC); a support programme event at the 1991 Australian Grand Prix and two long distance races, nicknamed 'enduros' which made up the 1991 Australian Endurance Championship.
Doug E. Doug started off his career as a stand-up comic at the age of 17. Doug was first seen at the Apollo Theater by Russell Simmons, who then asked Doug to write and host a syndicated late-night program Simmons produced called The New Music Report. His entrance into film began when he spoke one line in Spike Lee's film Mo' Better Blues. Doug is known to movie viewers for his starring role as the spirited pushcart operator turned bobsled racer in Cool Runnings.
In the mid 1990s, Gomez's career began to take off. He won back- to-back runnings of the Arkansas Derby in 1994 (with Concern) and 1995 (with Dazzling Falls). Two years later, he captured the "Mid-America Triple" at Arlington Park by winning the American Derby, Arlington Classic, and his first Grade I, the Secretariat Stakes, all aboard Honor Glide. After his triumphs in the Midwest, Gomez moved west to California, and was successful right away, as he won the 1998 Hollywood Park Fall Meet riding title.
Gunner B was a "strong, deep-bodied" chestnut horse with a narrow white blaze bred by Tom Barratt at his Harness Grove Stud in Worksop, Nottinghamshire. He was the best horse sired by the American stallion Royal Gunner, who won the Cornhusker Handicap in 1966 and finished second to Roman Brother and Buckpasser in successive runnings of the Woodward Stakes. Gunner B's dam, Sweet Councillor, was an unraced daughter of Sugarstick, a half sister of the Cambridgeshire Handicap winner Sterope. During his racing career Gunner B raced in the colours of Tom Barratt's wife Pauline.
Goldencents (foaled March 7, 2010) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning consecutive runnings of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. As a two-year-old he ran three times, winning the Delta Jackpot Stakes and finishing second in the Champagne Stakes (United States). In the following year he won the Sham Stakes and the Santa Anita Derby before finishing unplaced in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. He was brought back to sprint distances and ran well without winning before taking the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.
Bred at August Belmont Jr.'s Nursery Stud near Lexington, Kentucky, Watervale's dam was the retrospective American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly for 1892. His British-born sire, Watercress, was a winner of the 1892 Prince of Wales's Stakes who was imported to the United States by prominent breeder, James Ben Ali Haggin. Watercress also sired the very good filly, Rhine Maiden. His grandsire, Springfield, was bred by Queen Victoria and was a winner of the first two runnings of the July Cup in 1876-1877 at Newmarket Racecourse.
The 58th Rally Finland, the ninth rally of the 2008 World Rally Championship season took place between July 31 and August 3, 2008. The event was the first rally held after a six-week mid season break. The rally was based in the city of Jyväskylä in the centre of Finland with the special stages held on fast gravel roads in the lake district area of the country. The winner was the reigning world champion Sébastien Loeb, who became only the fourth non Scandinavian driver to win the event in fifty-eight runnings.
He had two attempts to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup, finishing out of the frame both times, in 1996 (when starting the 11/8 favourite), and 1997. On both occasions he weakened in the later stages of the race. Richards also trained the future, dual Champion Hurdle winner, Sea Pigeon, when the horse began his hurdling career. But owner Pat Muldoon transferred the animal to the Great Habton yard of Peter Easterby, where he won two Chester Cups and an Ebor Handicap, as well as the 1980 and 1981 runnings of the Champion Hurdle .
Moore moved the filly up to challenge a furlong out and she quickened clear, winning by two lengths from Borderlescott who went on to win the next two runnings of the Nunthorpe Stakes. The winning time of 57.15 broke the track record by more than a second. Fleeting Spirit was then made 15/8 favourite for the Group One King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. She again started slowly before producing a sustained late run to finish third, beaten half a length and a neck by Equiano and Takeover Target.
By the time of Aperture's release (delayed due to IPR's distribution woes), Gaskins had left the group; the album credits thank him for his bass playing but do not list him as a band member. Runnings returned to bass, and For Against has remained a trio ever since. For Against recorded two more albums, Mason's California Lunchroom (1995) and Shelf Life (1997), before reemerging on a new label in 2002 with the album Coalesced. Hinrichs soon left the band and moved to Virginia, leaving the group's existence in doubt.
In 1994, the then four-year-old won the Mervyn Leroy Handicap at Hollywood Park Racetrack and the first of his three consecutive runnings of the San Bernardino Handicap. As well, he earned a third place result in that year's Hollywood Gold Cup. In 1995, Del Mar Dennis won the San Pasqual Handicap and his 1996 win of the San Bernardino Handicap marked the first time in the 59-year history of the Santa Anta racetrack that a horse had won a race three years in a row.
When the Susquehanna, Bloomsburg, and Berwick Railroad was first built in 1887, it was intended to be used for the anthracite fields on the North Branch and West Branch Susquehanna River. Starting in 1902, the Susquehanna, Bloomsburg, and Berwick Railroad carried most of the cars manufactured by Berwick's American Car and Foundry Company to their owners. Despite usually running only six days a week, trains would sometimes go along the railroad on Sundays to the Bloomsburg fairgrounds and picnic grounds at Eyers Grove. These runnings of trains were termed "Special Sunday excursions".
Only Royale began her third season of racing by finishing eighth behind Alderbrook when 5/2 favourite for the Festival Stakes at Goodwood Racecourse on 19 May. In June she started a 20/1 outsider for a strong edition of the Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs Racecourse. She finished seventh behind Apple Tree in a field which included Urban Sea, Intrepidity, Monsun, White Muzzle and Environment Friend. After a break of two and a half months Only Royale attempted to become the first horse to win consecutive runnings of the Yorkshire Oaks.

The first running took place on August 2, 1930 and was contested at a distance of one mile (8 furlongs). It was won by the Glen Riddle Farm colt Battleship Gray who owned his sire, the legendary Man o' War. Due to government wartime restrictions, the 1943 to 1945 runnings of the Wilson Stakes took place at Belmont Park. In July of 1954, the race was shifted permanently to Jamaica Racetrack in Jamaica, New York where it was renamed the Wilson Handicap and run as a six furlong sprint.
Alborada (8 March 1995 - February 2012) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning consecutive runnings of the Group One Champion Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse. In a racing career which lasted from July 1997 until October 1999 she won six of her ten races. In addition to her wins in the Champion Stakes she also won the C. L. Weld Park Stakes in 1997 and the Pretty Polly Stakes and the Nassau Stakes in 1998. Following her retirement from racing she had some success as a dam of winners.
Milwaukee Appeal was bred and raced by businessman Eugene George under his nom de course, C.E.C. Farms. She was sired by Milwaukee Brew, one of only three horses to ever win back-to-back runnings of the Santa Anita Handicap. Her grandsire, Wild Again, won the 1984 Breeders' Cup Classic. Her dam, Appealing Forum, is a daughter of Open Forum, who won the Risen Star Stakes and is a son of two-time Leading sire in North America and Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee Deputy Minister.
Miller and Reeve would watch the film Cool Runnings and joke about Reeve directing the sequel, Bobsled Two.Reeve, Christopher (1998), pp 98–109 After five months at Kessler, Reeve was able to move back to his home, which had since been modified for accessibility, in Pound Ridge. By two years after the accident, Reeve said that he was "glad to be alive, not out of obligation to others, but because life was worth living." Reeve kept his body as physically strong as possible by using specialized exercise machines.
Watling Street was a tall, leggy bay horse standing 16.1¾ hands high bred by his owner Lord Derby and the colt was named for Watling Street, an ancient trackway in England and Wales. His sire, Fairway, had been a highly successful racehorse for Lord Derby, winning the St Leger and two runnings of the Champion Stakes. Watling's Street's dam, Ranai, won two minor races before producing many good winners including the 2000 Guineas winner Garden Path. Lord Derby sent the horse to his private trainer Walter Earl at his Stanley House stable in Newmarket, Suffolk.
Albertas Run (foaled 23 April 2001) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt races. He won two National Hunt Flat races and became a successful hurdler, winning the National Hunt Novices' Handicap Hurdle Final and the John Smith's Extra Cold Handicap Hurdle in 2007. He became more successful as a Steeplechaser, winning four Grade I races: the Royal and SunAlliance Chase, the Melling Chase and two runnings of the Ryanair Chase. His other wins included the Reynoldstown Novices' Chase, the Amlin 1965 Chase and the Old Roan Chase.

Buckskin (1 April 1973-1995) was a French-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Unraced as a two-year-old, he was trained in France in 1976 and 1977 before being transferred to race the United Kingdom in 1978 and 1979. A specialist stayer, he overcame serious physical problems to win several major long-distance races including the Prix du Cadran (twice), Prix de Barbeville, Prix Jean Prat, Doncaster Cup, Jockey Club Cup and Henry II Stakes. He was also the beaten favourite in three successive runnings of the Ascot Gold Cup.
Several times in the early 1980s he attempted to fly out of New York and Boston airports with this intention. Each time he was arrested for persistent attempts to board commercial jets without a passport. On one occasion, he was sentenced to a period in Deer Island Prison near Boston, but was released early because of his persistence in going on hunger strikes and inspiring other prisoners to do the same. After a number of similar imprisonments, Runnings decided in 1985 that he would apply for a passport.
Since its inception in 2002, it has striven to become a world class race by bringing in some of the best fillies from all over the world, currently offering a purse of US$300,000. The American Oaks was first run as a Grade I event in 2004. It was not eligible for grading during the first two runnings. The race was originally run at miles but in 2016 was cut back to miles to prevent runners from having to race down the Santa Anita hillside turf course and cross the dirt main track.
In all but three runnings since 1988, over 10,000 runners have reached the finish within the allowed 11 or 12 hours. With increased participation since the 1980s, the average finish times for both sexes, and the average age of finishers have increased substantially. Runners over the age of 20 qualify when they are able to complete an officially recognised marathon (42.2 km) in under five hours (4h50 for 2019 onwards). During the event an athlete must also reach five cut-off points in specified times to complete the race.

During boiling, water in the wort evaporates, but the sugars and other components of the wort remain; this allows more efficient use of the starch sources in the beer. Boiling also destroys any remaining enzymes left over from the mashing stage.
Instead, in most instances in print, television, and radio, the race was referred to as the "2009 Indianapolis 500". Since the race was not held during the United States' participation in the two World Wars (1917–1918, 1942–1945), the advertised Centennial Era occurred during the 93rd to 95th runnings. To avoid confusion between the 100th anniversary, and the actual number of times the race has been run, references to the ordinal during the Centennial Era were curtailed. Six years later, in 2016, the race celebrated its 100th running with about 350,000 in attendance.
The next three runnings were all won by Best Mate, who is the most recent of the four horses to have won the race three or more times. In 2009, Kauto Star became the first horse to regain the Gold Cup. He overcame his stablemate and conqueror in 2008, Denman, who had recovered from a heart condition to take his place in the race. Timeform spokesperson Kieran Packman said of Kauto Star's performance, "it is the best Gold Cup-winning figure since the Arkle era in the mid-1960s".
After being discharged from the military, Adams returned to horse racing. In addition to his success with Master Derby, Adams also notably trained Run Dusty Run who finished second in the 1977 Kentucky Derby, third in the 1977 Preakness Stakes and second in the 1977 Belmont Stakes, all to Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew. Among his many stakes wins, Smiley Adams won seven consecutive runnings of the Spiral Stakes at Latonia Race Course in Kentucky. Smiley Adams was retired from training and living in Nicholasville, Kentucky at the time of his passing in 2003.
Sarah A. Lundy (born August 26, 1954) is an American Thoroughbred horse trainer. In 1984 she became the first female trainer to ever saddle a horse in the Belmont Stakes, third leg of the U.S. Triple Crown series.Associated Press Archive - June 8, 2006 From 690 career starts, Sarah Lundy won 85 races. Among her successes, in 1990/91 she won back-to-back runnings of the Ashley T. Cole Handicap at Aqueduct Racetrack in the New York City area where she also won the 1991 Kingston Handicap at Belmont Park.
At first, Lewis was not supposed to have auditioned as the producers originally wanted A-list stars to have portrayed the four leads. According to Lewis, "I came in to this film at first to coach the players in the authentic accents, but then I was asked to do a screen test -- so here I am." He later said in another interview, " I was helping them cast the movie." At the time, Lewis had been participating in play which was viewed by a casting director for Cool Runnings.
The Prix du Palais-Royal is a Group 3 flat horse race in France open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at Longchamp over a distance of 1,400 metres (about 7 furlongs), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late May or early June. The event is named after the Palais- Royal, a palace and an associated garden located in Paris. The race was established in 1968, and with two exceptions — the 1996 and 2016 runnings at Deauville — it has always taken place at Longchamp.
The Jamaican Bobsled Team became a fan favorite at these Games and were later the inspiration of the 1993 motion picture Cool Runnings. In the 1994 Winter Olympics six years later, the Jamaican four-man sled placed a creditable fourteenth, ahead of the United States and Russia, while a Jamaican bobsledder Lascelles Brown won silver for Canada in 2006. The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf is a one-mile turf stakes race for thoroughbred fillies two years old. As its name implies, it is part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, the de facto year-end championship for North American thoroughbred racing. The race was run for the first time in 2008 during the first day of Breeders' Cup racing at that year's host track, Santa Anita Park. Because of technical requirements, it was not eligible for classification as a graded stakes race in its first two runnings.
Speedy Thompson defeated Cotton Owens by three laps at an average speed of . Thompson drove the iconic 1957 Chevrolet during that race; that vehicle went on to win the 1958 and the 1959 runnings of the Southern 500. Owens won the pole position with a speed of during qualifying. Speedy Thompson would record his only Southern 500 victory here even though he would win on other paved superspeedways. T.A. Toomes received the last-place finish due to a problem with his brakes on lap 3 out of 364.
Ted Musgrave won the final 250-mile race ahead of Travis Kvapil in 2001. For the 2002 running of the race, the race's distance was shortened by 50 miles and was moved to November, becoming the last race in the championship season. Ron Hornaday Jr. recorded the win ahead of the defending winner Musgrave. The next five runnings of the race were won by Bobby Hamilton, Kasey Kahne, Todd Bodine, Mark Martin and Johnny Benson, Jr.. In 2008, Bodine became the first driver to win the event more than once.
Will Take Charge is a chestnut colt with a broad white blaze and three high white stockings who stands over , making him an unusually large Thoroughbred. He was sired by the Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Unbridled's Song, whose other major winners included the sprinter Zensational and the Breeders' Cup winners Unrivaled Belle and Unbridled Elaine. Will Take Charge's dam, Take Charge Lady, was a top-class race mare whose wins included the Ashland Stakes and successive runnings of the Spinster Stakes. She is also the dam of the Florida Derby winner Take Charge Indy.
According to legend, the matter was settled in Derby's favour on the toss of a coin, although it seems likely that Bunbury actually deferred to his host. This first Derby was set to be run over only 1 mile, as were the next three. It was not until 1784 that the race was run over its now familiar distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs. Colts were to be allotted a weight of 8 stone, fillies 7 stone 11 lbs, another difference between this first race and subsequent runnings.
Nash Turner (1881–1937) was an American Hall of Fame jockey who competed in Thoroughbred horse racing in the United States and France. A native of Texas, Nash Turner began his professional riding career in 1895 and by 1900 was one of the top ten jockeys in the United States. Although he is best remembered as the jockey of the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame filly, Imp, Nash Turner rode Ildrim to victory in the 1900 Belmont Stakes and captured the first two runnings of the Saratoga Special.
Two mares have won the event, La Zanzara (1975) and the Champion Argentine mare Miss Grillo (1949). The event had showcased many a champion and notable runnings. In 1950 the Irish bred Champion Noor defeated the 1948 Triple Crown champion Citation by a neck before a crowd of about 60,000. The March 12, 1966, edition of the San Juan Capistrano Invitational Handicap was seen by 60,792 fans, the largest crowd of the season, who turned out to say farewell to retiring U.S. Racing Hall of Fame jockey Johnny Longden.
His success in 1963 helped make Prendergast the first Irish-based trainer to ever win the British trainers' title. Bougoure's numerous wins in Ireland include the 1960 and 1963 runnings of the Irish Derby and in England he won three of the Classics, taking the 1963 Epsom Oaks with the filly Noblesse, the 1963 St. Leger Stakes with Ragusa and in 1964 the 1,000 Guineas Stakes aboard Pourparler. Garnet Bougoure returned to Singapore during the second half of the 1960s where he continued to riding until retiring in 1969.
Samuel "Sam" Chifney (c. 1753 – 8 January 1807), also known as Sam Chifney Sr., Sam Chifney the Elder or Old Sam Chifney to distinguish him from his son, was an English jockey. He was a pioneer of professional race-riding, developing a trademark late finishing style, known as the 'Chifney rush' and was the retained jockey of the Prince of Wales. He became the leading horseman of his day, winning four runnings of the Oaks and one of the Derby, but his career ended in ignominy after a scandal around a ride on the Prince of Wales's horse, Escape.
On 21 April, Tontine was scheduled to contest the twelfth running of the 1000 Guineas Stakes over the Rowley Mile course. Seven other fillies had been entered for the race by their owners, at a cost of £100 each, but none of them appeared to oppose Tontine on the day. The Duke's filly was therefore allowed to claim the prize by walking over the course. Although many early runnings of the 1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas attracted very small fields this was the only occasion on which a British classic race was decided without a competitive heat.
In the immediate post-war years he continued to dominate French racing, winning further Arcs with Caracalla and Coronation and winning six runnings of the Prix du Jockey Club in eleven years. Semblat was keen to exploit the opportunities which the end of hostilities brought for international competition. In 1946 he sent his horses to Royal Ascot and won the Gold Cup with Caracalla and the Queen Alexandra Stakes with Marsyas. He won a second Gold Cup with Arbar in 1948 and in the following year sent Djeddah across the English Channel to take both the Eclipse Stakes and the Champion Stakes.

In motorsport, the Brands Hatch circuit near Swanley has played host to a number of national and international racing events and hosted 12 runnings of the British Grand Prix in various years between 1964 and 1986.
Firstly the electric train passed the home signal at danger. Analysing the previous 110 runnings of the 07:20 train showed that the signal in question had not once been at danger; moreover the distant signal was at caution on 101 occasions. The driver appeared to have therefore missed the home signal as it was always clear in the past, and ignored the distant signal as it was normally at caution anyway and was normally cleared by the time he reached it. The signalman was also at fault for not checking that the electric train had stopped before allowing the steam train through.
The event is named in memory of Auguste de Morny (1811–1865), the founder of Deauville Racecourse. It was established in 1865, and it was originally called the Prix de Morny. The inaugural race was over 1,000 metres, and the prize for the winning owner was 9,150 francs. The second and third runnings of the Prix de Morny were contested over 1,200 metres. It was extended to 1,300 metres in 1868, and to 1,400 metres in 1870. The race became known as the Prix de Deux Ans in 1871, and its distance was cut to 1,200 metres in 1887.
Chanteur was a brown horse with a broad white blaze bred by François Dupré at the Haras d'Ouilly stud farm in Pont-d'Ouilly, Calvados. He was the most notable horse sired by Chateau Bouscaut, a French stallion whose wins included the Prix du Jockey Club in 1930 and the Prix du Cadran a year later. Chanteur's dam La Diva was a half-sister to the Grand Critérium winner Pantalon. La Diva later produced La Divine, the dam of Tanerko, a colt who won two runnings of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and sired the Derby winner Relko.

Tristan (1878-1897) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career that lasted from the April 1880 to October 1884, he ran 51 times and won 27 races. A useful performer at two and three years old, he matured into an outstanding horse in his last three seasons, winning important races at distances ranging from six furlongs (the July Cup) to two and a half miles (Ascot Gold Cup) and defeating three winners of The Derby. Unusually for a 19th-century racehorse, he was regularly campaigned internationally, winning three consecutive runnings of the Grand Prix de Deauville.

Sahpresa (foaled 11 February 2005) is an American-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning three consecutive runnings of the Group One Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse. Sahpresa was unraced as a two-year-old, but raced until the age of six, winning eight of her twenty-two races. Apart from the Sun Chariot Stakes she won the Prix du Pin in 2010 and the Prix du Palais-Royal in 2011. She also competed in Asia, where she picked up large sums in place money when finishing third in Mile Championship (twice) and the Hong Kong Mile.
The 1990 Australian Touring Car season was the 31st year of touring car racing in Australia since the first runnings of the Australian Touring Car Championship and the fore-runner of the present day Bathurst 1000, the Armstrong 500. There were 12 touring car race meetings held during 1990; an eight-round series, the 1990 Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC); a support programme event at the 1990 Australian Grand Prix and a three-round series of long distance races, nicknamed 'enduros', which counted towards both the 1990 Australian Endurance Championship and the 1990 Australian Manufacturers' Championship.
As a two-year-old in 1949, Galcador won his only race, the Prix de Saint- Firmin over 1000m at Longchamp. On his three-year-old debut he won the 1600m Prix Daphnis at Le Tremblay, after which he was identified as Boussac's main Derby contender, and was then moved up to the highest class for the Poule d'Essai des Poulains at Longchamp on 14 May. He finished second, beaten half a length by Tantieme after the two colts had raced together throughout the closing stages. The winner went on to win the next two runnings of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Two decades earlier, the parents of twelve-year-old Jeffrey Lionel Magee (Michael Angarano) are killed by a drunk driver just after his father told him that he would show him his infamous "stop ball." After his parents' funeral, a police officer and a woman named Dottie Freeze (Melissa Bickerton) who runs an orphanage approaches Jeffrey and tells him to "come with them." They both appear to be lunatics, scaring Jeffrey who decides to run out of town and across the country. All of the runnings seem to develop into supernatural-like qualities allowing him to run at a very fast speed.

In 2009 the event was moved to the Aqueduct Fall Meeting and has been held in late October or early November and at times returning to be scheduled at Belmont Park. In 1982 the event was classified as Grade III, upgraded to Grade II in 1985 for five runnings before being downgraded back to Grade III in 1990. In the 1998 running, Kelly Kip, ridden by Jean-Luc Samyn, set an Aqueduct rack record of 1:07.61 for the six furlongs distance. Samyn and Kelly Kip returned the following year to break that record, running the six furlongs in 1:07.54.
The event was renamed to Louisville Breeders' Cup Stakes in 2007, Louisville Stakes in 2008 and Louisville Distaff Stakes in 2009. In 2010 the race was renamed after the famous broodmare La Troienne to the La Troienne Stakes. This event was upgraded to a Grade I for its 2014. Of the more notable runnings of this event was the 2010 edition which saw the heavily favored 2009 US Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra returning to Churchill Downs for the first time since her 2009 Kentucky Oaks victory trying to lead all the way but was defeated by Unbridled Belle by a head.
However, the race was run in a downpour, and unlike Blue Larkspur, Clyde Van Dusen was wearing mud caulks on the sloppy track. As a result, he was never seriously threatened and won by 2 lengths, although his time of 2:10 4/5 was one of the slowest winning times in Derby history. After the race, Blue Larkspur's owner, Colonel Edward R. Bradley, called Clyde Van Dusen "the worst horse to win the Derby in twenty years." Clyde Van Dusen was the seventh gelding to win the Kentucky Derby in the race's first 55 runnings.
The race was originally established in 2008 as part of the annual Breeders' Cup World Championships with its inaugural running on 25 October 2008 at a distance of miles as the Breeders' Cup Marathon. The inaugural running took place on the second day of the Breeders' Cup on the Pro-Ride synthetic dirt at the 2008 host track, Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. In 2009, the distance was extended by 2 furlongs to miles. Due to technical requirements, the race was not eligible for classification as a graded stakes race in its first two runnings.
The race was anticipated to see a battle between the previous winner Belgian Gustaaf Deloor and the second-place finisher of 1935 Spaniard Mariano Canardo. However a crash during the early stages of the race ruled Canardo out of the runnings. While Deloor led the race from the second stage to the finish, his brother Alfons climbed up the classification and when second placed Spaniard Antonio Escuriet suffered exhaustion on the penultimate day, Alfons rode himself into the second place overall. Fifty riders began the race and only twenty four finished the race in Madrid on 31 May.
The Kentucky Futurity is a stakes race for three-year-old trotters, held annually at The Red Mile in Lexington, Kentucky since 1893. In winning the 2016 running of the Kentucky Futurity, Marion Marauder became the ninth horse from 124 runnings to win the Triple Crown of Harness Racing for Trotters.
Following his win in the triple crown, he would manage 2 more wins increasing his win streak to 16 straight before going to the biggest test of his career the Clásico del Caribe. In over 42 runnings of the race and even hosting the race in 1995 the Dominican Republic had never actually won the race. But now was the best shot they had ever had. Sicótico did not take the lead, as jockey Joel Rosario positioned him fifth passing the post of the final 900 meters and wasn't fazed when Defensora and Venezuelan Rey Angelo passed inside.
The current rendition of the race was renewed in 2004 with the first two runnings on the Inner Turf course at a distance of 1 mile with conditions for 4-year-olds and up and was held in August. In 2006, the distance was changed to furlongs on the main turf track, but was still restricted to four- year-olds and up. Beginning in 2011, the race was open to three-year-olds and up. In 2014, an abundance of rain necessitated the move of the race from the turf and onto the main dirt track, where it was run at furlongs.

Having received favorable press for the melodic post-punk of Echelons, For Against released follow-up December the next year, to equally rave reception. The band lost considerable momentum, however, when Hill left, followed shortly thereafter by Dingman after a brief attempt at a retooled, four-piece lineup. Hill and Dingman would soon form the Millions, a melodic alt-rock outfit with more mainstream leanings than For Against. Runnings, who had by this time switched from bass to guitar, continued on with bassist Jeff Gaskins and drummer Steve Schultz, playing under the name Stahlversion for a time before returning to the For Against handle.
On 2 August Battaash started the 1/4 favourite as he attempted to become the first horse to win three runnings of the King George Stakes with the best fancied of his eight opponents being the French-trained pair El Astronaute and Big Brothers Pride (Prix Sigy). He raced in second place before taking the lead two furlongs out and was "always in command" thereafter, winning by three quarters of a length from Houtzen. Crowley commented "He's all speed. He's the fastest five furlong horse around and he doesn’t really get much further. If there were four and a half furlong races around he’d be unbelievable".
Pall Mall (1955-1978) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire, best known for winning the classic 2000 Guineas in 1958. Owned and bred by Queen Elizabeth II, Pall Mall was one of the leading British two-year-olds of 1957, when he won the New Stakes at Royal Ascot and was placed in three other important races. In the following spring, he performed moderately in two trial races before creating a 20/1 upset by winning the 2000 Guineas. He later won the first two runnings of the Lockinge Stakes before being retired to stud, where he had some success as a sire of winners.

On his first appearance of the new season Selkirk won the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on May 15 by 2 1/2 lengths over Lahib (1m 36.99s). In July he finished second to Marling by only a head in the Sussex Stakes, and on August 29 he won the Celebration Mile (1m 41.72s) by 2 1/2 over Steinbeck, the latter two races at Goodwood. Selkirk was set to become the first horse since Brigadier Gerard in 1972 to win consecutive runnings of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, but his regular jockey Ray Cochrane had been suspended. Former jockey John Reid and Selkirk finished third.
Prince's Polly was a "lengthy, deep-girthed" bay filly with a broad white blaze bred in Ireland by Tom Nicholson, a farmer from County Kilkenny. Nicholson, who also owned and trained her during her two- year-old season, had been successful in National Hunt racing and had trained Bigaroon to win three runnings of the Irish Cesarewitch. Her dam Suspicious Polly was also owned and trained by Nicholson and had some success on the track, winning three minor races in Ireland. Her sire English Prince won the Irish Derby in 1974 and stood as breeding stallion in Europe before being exported to Japan in 1980.
Bindilatti took up bobsleigh after being approached by Eric Maleson in 1999: Bindilatti was unfamiliar with the sport, and agreed to take it up after Maleson asked him to watch the film Cool Runnings. He competed for Brazil at the 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics. He competed for Brazil at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the four-man competition where he placed in 29th position out of 30 teams along with Fábio Gonçalves Silva, Edson Martins and Odirlei Pessoni.Final 4 man bobsled results at Sochi 2014 Bindilatti was selected as flag bearer for the Brazilian team in the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
Oh So Sharp, described by Timeform as "a big, lengthy filly and a grand mover with a raking stride" was bred in Ireland by her owner Sheikh Mohammed. She was one of two classic winners sired by Kris the leading British miler of 1979: the chestnut Oh So Sharp came from his first crop of foals. Her dam was the American-bred mare Oh So Fair, making her a half-sister to Roussalka a filly which won the Coronation Stakes and two runnings of the Nassau Stakes when trained by Henry Cecil in the mid-1970s. She later became a successful broodmare, whose descendants include Collier Hill and Ameerat.
The 1843 Grand Liverpool Steeplechase was the fifth official annual running of a handicap steeplechase, later to become known as the Grand National Steeplechase handicap horse race which took place at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool on Wednesday 1 March 1843 and attracted a field of 16 runners. Although recorded by the press at the time as the eighth running of the Grand Liverpool, which was renamed the Grand National in 1847, the first three runnings were poorly organised affairs and are not currently officially recognised. This year the race was run as a handicap, with horses weighted according to their ability. In previous years they had all carried the same amount.
The New Zealand St. Leger is a major thoroughbred horse race run at Trentham Racecourse in New Zealand on New Zealand Oaks day in March each year. Run over 2500m up until 2018 and 2600m from 2019 onward, it is a test of a horse's staying ability. Originally open just to three-year-old horses, the race is now open to both three- and four-year-olds. Although it has suffered a loss in prestige in recent years, it is still a good race for up and coming stayers, with the likes of Kerry O'Reilly and Ring Of Fire taking part in recent runnings.
Jonathon C. "Jono" Jones (born April 30, 1976 in Cascade, Trinidad and Tobago) is a Barbadian-born Canadian jockey in Thoroughbred horse racing who has won each of the Canadian Triple Crown races. The son of the renowned Barbadian jockey/trainer Challenor Jones MBE, Jono Jones began his riding career at the age of fourteen at Garrison Savannah Racetrack in his native Barbados. In addition to winning important races at home, including five runnings of the Barbados Derby, he was also the leading rider in Martinique in 1994 and again in 1995. In May 2001, Jono Jones went to compete in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

In the spring of 2009, the series returned after a five-year hiatus and started off with the 2006 Food City 500 at Bristol where Kurt Busch earned his first win with car owner Roger Penske and remembered when Jeff Gordon pushed Matt Kenseth after being spun out late in the race. Several months later, Gordon took out Kenseth at Chicagoland Speedway, which was shown later in 2009. Since its return, they have shown recent runnings of the weekend's race (such as 2008 Sharpie 500 shown during the 2009 Sharpie 500 weekend), which expands from 2003 to 2008's event. Speed now shows races from Fox, TNT, ESPN, ABC and NBC.
He planned to first visit Moscow during 1985 and the following year, he would use a passport to visit Berlin. Once convinced to get a passport, Runnings went on to Moscow and leafletted all around Red Square for nearly a week. The Soviet authorities would have him taken to a police station about once every day or two and they would try to convince him to quit his leafletting. In his words, he would not say either "yes sir" or "no sir", but each time they released him, he would go back to leafletting, sometimes near Red Square, and sometimes he would take a subway to the suburbs.
Finally, after nearly two weeks of "playing this police station game", the Soviet authorities got "really tired" of Runnings' persistence. One day they told him they wanted to move him to another "more convenient" hotel. They came with an Intourist vehicle, picked him up (he co- operated because he believed them) and took him to the Moscow airport where they put him on board a jet with no passengers, only stewardesses - about 150 seats and he was the only passenger. The plane took off and the next thing he noticed was they were coming in for landing over an expanse of what seemed like endless forests and lakes.
Born in West Medford, Massachusetts as one of ten children, Kelley ran track and cross-country at Arlington High School in Massachusetts. He did not finish his first Boston Marathon in 1928, but eventually competed in a record 61 Boston Marathons. A legend of the marathon, Kelley won the 1935 and 1945 runnings of the Boston Marathon. He finished in second place at Boston a record seven times. Between 1934 and 1950, he finished in the top five 15 times at Boston, consistently running in the 2:30s. He ran his last full marathon at Boston in 1992 at the age of 84, his 61st start and 58th finish there.
The Havre de Grace Handicap was an American Thoroughbred horse race first run on the August 26, 1912 opening day of the new Havre de Grace Racetrack in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Although most of its runnings would take place in early fall, its final edition was run there on April 30, 1949. Due to Federal government wartime regulations, the 1943 edition was held at Laurel Park and in 1945 at Pimlico Race Course. A race for horses age three old or older, it was run on dirt over a distance of 1 1/8 miles with the exception of 1918 when it was set at 1 mile and 70 yards.
Long Look was bay mare with a small white star bred in Kentucky by her owner James Cox Brady, a financier who served as chairman of the NYRA from 1961 to 1969. She was sent to race in Europe and entered training with Vincent O'Brien at Ballydoyle. She was sired by Ribot, the undefeated, Italian-trained champion who won consecutive runnings of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1955 and 1956. As a breeding stallion he was an outstanding sire of middle-distance and staying horses including Ragusa, Ribocco, Ribero, Molvedo, Prince Royal, Boucher, Tom Rolfe, Arts and Letters, Graustark and His Majesty.

The event was inaugurated on 29 October 1979 at Aqueduct Racetrack and was run over the mile distance in split divisions as the sixth and eighth race on the card that day. The race is named for Joseph E. Widener's horse, Pilgrim, winner of the 1919 Remsen Stakes. In 1982 the event was classified as Grade III, upgraded to Grade II in 1988 for two runnings before being downgraded to Grade III. From 2001-2007 the race was not graded as in 2009 when the event was moved off the turf track due to the inclement weather and held over a shorter one mile distance.
The Juvenile Stakes was run at four different tracks: Jerome Park Racetrack (1874–1888) Morris Park Racecourse (1889–1904) Belmont Park (1905–1959, 1968–1973, 1975, 1977–1984) Aqueduct Racetrack (1960–1967, 1974, 1976) A field of fifteen competed in the inaugural edition won by Meco, a colt owned and trained by South Carolina native Thomas Puryear. In 1888, French Park and Fides finished in a dead heat for first. It would remain as the only such occurrence in the 109 runnings of the event. With the implementation of the Graded Stakes system in 1973, for that first year and again in 1974 the Juvenile Stakes was given Grade 3 status.
Screen Hero is a chestnut horse with a white star and two white socks standing 15.3½ hands high, bred by the Yoshida family's Shadai Farm. He is one of the best horses sired by the Kentucky-bred stallion Grass Wonder whose wins included the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes, the Takarazuka Kinen and two runnings of the Arima Kinen. Screen Hero's dam Running Heroine (a daughter of Sunday Silence) finished unplaced in both of her races in 1996. Running Heroine's dam Dyna Actress was a top-class racemare who won the Sprinters Stakes and was the JRA Award for Best Older Filly or Mare in 1987 and 1988.
The event is named in honor of the outstanding breeding stallion and notable sire of sires Mr. Prospector who held the 6 furlongs track record at Gulfstream Park. The race was inaugurated in 1946 and the event was run as the Hallandale Handicap. The conditions of the race were open for three years old over a distance of miles. The following two runnings were extended to three years olds and older and the distance extended to 9 furlongs. The race was not run in 1949 and was resumed in 1950 under the name Hallandale Purse. In 1956 the event was run under the original naming of Hallandale Handicap.
The event attracted a strong field of nineteen including the Derby winner Arctic Prince and the previous season's Arc winner Tantieme, as well as the winners of the most recent runnings of the 1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas and St Leger. Elliott restrained Supreme Court, a 100/9 chance, towards the rear of the field as a strong pace was set by Mossborough. As the leaders tired in the straight, Supreme Court challenged on the outside, together with Zucchero, ridden by Lester Piggott. The two British-trained three-year-olds drew clear of the field inside the final furlong, with Supreme Court prevailing by three quarters of a length.
Sadeem began his seven-year-old season in the Douglas Stakes over fourteen furlongs at Salisbury Racecourse on 3 May. He successfully conceded ten pounds to the four-year-old colt Ashal, winning by a neck after taking the lead half a mile from the finish. On 21 June, Sadeem attempted to become the second horse, after Sagaro to win three consecutive runnings of the Ascot Gold Cup. Starting at odds of 5/1 he was among the leaders until six furlongs from the finish, when he dropped back and finished eighth of the eleven runner, more than forty lengths behind the winner Ashal.
The 2001 V8 Supercar season was the 42nd year of touring car racing in Australia since the first runnings of the Australian Touring Car Championship and the fore-runner of the present day Bathurst 1000, the Armstrong 500. There were 22 touring car race meetings held during 2001; a thirteen-round series for V8 Supercars, the 2001 Shell Championship Series (SCS), two of them endurance races; a six-round second tier V8 Supercar series 2001 Konica V8 Supercar Series (KVS) along with a non-point scoring race supporting the Bathurst 1000 and V8 Supercar support programme events at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix and 2001 Honda Indy 300.
The event was established in 1920, and it was initially called the Prix des Maréchaux. It was named in honour of the French and Allied marshals (maréchaux) who served in World War I. The race was originally staged at Saint-Cloud, and it was open to horses aged three or older. The early runnings were contested over 3,100 metres, and the distance was cut to 2,800 metres in 1928. It was shortened to 2,600 metres in 1936. The Prix des Maréchaux was cancelled in 1940, and for a period thereafter it was held at Longchamp (1941–42, 1944–45), Le Tremblay (1943) and Maisons-Laffitte (1946).
After two runnings of the event was classified by the American Graded Stakes Committee as Grade III and was upgraded to Grade II status in 1996. In 2007 the event was upgraded to Grade I. After the 2009 running, it was announced that the race would be renamed the Zenyatta Stakes, on the assumption that Zenyatta (who had won the race in 2008 and 2009) would retire at the end of 2009. That change, however, was held off for 2010 at the behest of the mare's connections. For 2010, it was again run as the Lady's Secret Stakes because Zenyatta was in the field, winning the race for the third time.
The Antarctic Ice Marathon was established by Richard Donovan / Polar Running Adventures to enable marathon runners to complete a marathon on all seven continents. It also enables athletes to complete the marathon grand slam - a marathon on all seven continents and the North Pole. Runnings of the Antarctic Ice Marathon and 100 km race have taken place at 80° south just a few hundred miles from the South Pole at the foot of the Ellsworth Mountains. Participants are flown from Punta Arenas, Chile to the race location in the interior of the Antarctic and experience subzero temperatures and 24 hours of daylight while there.
The story of the Jamaican bobsleigh team at the 1988 Winter Olympics was turned into the 1993 movie Cool Runnings. However, the film was only loosely based on actual events, with real life coach Pat Brown later saying that the team had never experienced any of the animosity from the other teams as depicted in the movie. All of the team members returned for the 1992 Winter Olympics, however Harris only competed in the two-man event, with his place in the four-man team taken by newcomer Ricky McIntosh. Harris and the Stokes brothers would continue to compete at the Winter Games in the bobsleigh events until the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano.
The 1842 Grand Liverpool Steeplechase was the fourth official annual running of a steeplechase, later to become known as the Grand National Steeplechase, a horse race which took place at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool on 2 March 1842 and attracted 15 runners. Although recorded by the press at the time as the seventh running of the Grand Liverpool, which was renamed the Grand National in 1847, the first three runnings were poorly organised affairs and are today regarded as unofficial. The race was not run as a handicap chase and therefore all the runners were declared to carry 12 stone with the exception of the winner of the 1840 Cheltenham Steeplechase who had to carry 13 stone 4 lbs.
In May 2000, as Chicagoland Speedway was under construction, it was announced that the track would hold a NASCAR Winston Cup Series race beginning in the 2001 season. Tropicana served as the race's sponsor from 2001 to 2004, followed by USG Corporation from 2005 to 2007, LifeLock.com from 2008 to 2010, GEICO from 2011 to 2013, Johnson & Johnson's Janssen Pharmaceutica from 2014 to 2015, and Nickelodeon has sponsored the race through the network's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series since 2016. Kevin Harvick won the first two runnings of the race in 2001 and 2002, while Tony Stewart has the most wins in the race's history, having won it three times, in 2004, 2007 and 2011.
Catalano has held American road records in the marathon, half marathon, 30 kilometers, 15 kilometers, 10 miles, and 5 mile (now 8 kilometers). Described as "one of the most dominating American female road runners of the 1970s" and "the queen of U.S. women distance runners", she was inducted into the National Distance Running Hall of Fame in 2006. Catalano won five of the first six runnings of the Ocean State Marathon (1976-1979, 1981) and four consecutive at the Honolulu Marathon (1978-1981). Included among the many races she has won are the Montreal International Marathon (1980), Crim 10 miler (1980, 1981), the Crescent City Classic 10 km (1980, 1981), and the Rio de Janeiro Marathon (1985).
British horses had performed well in the first two runnings of the race: Madam Gay had finished third in the inaugural running, and a year later Be My Native and Motovato had finished second and third behind Perrault. The "home team" was headed by the eight-year-old John Henry, supported by Majesty's Prince, Nijinsky's Secret and Erins Isle. Tolomeo was ridden by the Irish jockey Pat Eddery and started at odds of 38/1 in a fourteen-runner field, although British bookmakers were much more cautious and made the colt the 5/1 second favourite. In a slowly run race, Eddery tracked the leaders John Henry and Nijinsky's Secret before making his challenge in the straight.
The Canada Olympic Park bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track is a bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track located in Calgary, Alberta. Part of Canada Olympic Park, it hosted the bobsleigh and luge competitions at the 1988 Winter Olympics. This track is one of only two of its type in the world to be featured in a non-documentary film when it was part of the 1993 American film Cool Runnings which loosely followed the Jamaican Bobsled Team during their competition in bobsleigh at the 1988 Games (The other was the 1981 British film For Your Eyes Only which included scenes from the bobsleigh track in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.For Your Eyes Only production notes featuring the Cortina track).
Isla Bonita (, foaled 21 May 2011) is a Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a juvenile in 2013 he showed very promising form as he won three of his four races including the Icho Stakes and the Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai Stakes. In the following year he took the JRA Award for Best Three-Year-Old Colt after winning the Tokino Minoru Kinen, Satsuki Sho and St Lite Kinen as well as finishing second in the Tokyo Yushun and third in the autumn edition of the Tenno Sho. He failed to win in the net two years but ran well in several major races, being placed in the Tenno Sho and two runnings of the Mile Championship.

On his final prep race for Cheltenham he finished third to Airgead Sios and Macauley. In the Cheltenham Gold Cup on 10 March he faced Airgead Sios and Macauley again but most of the attention was focused on the eleven-year-old Golden Miller who had won five consecutive runnings of the race from 1932 to 1936. Ridden by Danny Morgan he started the 13/2 fourth choice in the betting in an eight-runner field with Golden Miller going off the 7/4 favourite. The race was run at a slow pace and as the horses approached the second last fence Airgead Sios, Morse Code, Golden Miller and Macauley were closely grouped.
The Fall Handicap was an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Sheepshead Bay Race Track in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, New York from 1894 thru 1909 for horses of either sex age three and older. For easier identification purposes, the race is sometimes referred to as the Coney Island Fall Handicap. For its first two editions, the Fall Handicap was run on the track's short futurity course at 5¾ furlongs then for the next twelve runnings at 6 furlongs and the final two years at 6½ furlongs. The Fall Handicap was the first of the track's autumn serials, preceding the Ocean Handicap at 6½ furlongs and the Omnium Handicap at 1⅛ miles.
In 2003, Fallon was no longer available, having been appointed the stable jockey to the Ballydoyle team, and Johnny Murtagh took over as Motivator's regular rider. Motivator was expected by some to run in the 2,000 Guineas but after an important exercise gallop in April, the decision was made to concentrate on middle-distance races. Michael Bell chose to start Motivator's three-year-old campaign with a run in the Dante Stakes at York, for which he was made even-money favourite. The Dante is one of the most important trial races for the Derby, having been won in runnings prior to 2005 by the Epsom winners Erhaab, Benny the Dip and North Light.
He went on to record a notable hat-trick at Arlington Park, winning the Citation Handicap in July, the Arlington Classic in August, and the American Derby in September (breaking the track record). His performances were enough to earn him American Champion 3-Year-Old Male Horse honors. His sire, Ribot, won back-to-back runnings of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and Tom Rolfe was shipped to Longchamp Racecourse in Paris, France to contest the 1965 Arc. He disputed the lead until the closing stages and finished sixth on the grass course to Sea- Bird, but that result remains one of the best by an American-trained entry in that championship race.
The victory was Buddy Lazier's first win in championship-level Indy car competition. Lazier had won races, and a championship, in the American Indycar Series, a minor league series that utilized CART machines, but his previous best finish in CART competition had been a 7th place at Michigan in 1992. In fact, he had never seen the checkered flag in his three previous Indy 500 runnings, having failed to qualify for the race four times. Lazier became the first American to get his first Indy car win at the Indy 500 since Troy Ruttman in 1952, and the third driver ever since, following in the footsteps of Formula 1 legend Graham Hill (1966) and Arie Luyendyk (1990).
Lido Palace (September 27, 1997 - July 16, 2020) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who competed successfully in Chile and the United States. In 2000 he was elected as Horse of the Year in his native Chile, after become the first Chilean Triple Crown winner (Dirt). He continued his career in the United States, where he most notably won back-to-back runnings of the prestigious Grade I Woodward Stakes, defeating the 2000 Horse of the Year and two-time Breeders Cup Classic winner Tiznow in the 2001 edition, as well as the Whitney Handicap, defeating the multiple graded stakes winner Albert the Great. Retired to stud duty, Lido Palace began his stallion career at Lambholm South near Ocala, Florida.
Probably trained by A. Jackson Minor (the facts are unclear), Kentucky won his only two-year-old start. At age three, racing for John Hunter, William R. Travers and George Osgood, he lost his second start in the inaugural Jersey Derby – coming in fourth to Norfolk. After that he won 20 consecutive races, including the first Travers Stakes in 1864 and the first two runnings of the Saratoga Cup at a distance of 2¼ miles. He also won the first Inaugural Stakes in four mile heats at the newly opened Jerome Park Racetrack. For three seasons (1864, 1865 and 1866), when races were two, three and four miles long, he was the undisputed champion of East Coast racing.
Oscar Schindler (4 February 1992 - after 2005) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and stallion best known for being the second horse to win two runnings of the Irish St. Leger. In a racing career which lasted from October 1994 until November 1997 he competed in five different countries and won five of his twenty starts. After winning his only race as a two-year-old in 1994, he failed to win in the following year but ran prominently in several major races. He reached his peak as a four-year-old in 1996, winning the Ormonde Stakes, Hardwicke Stakes and Irish St. Leger as well a finishing third in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
By this stage, the leading group contained fourteen runners, but Chelimo soon increased the pace and split the pack up. A group of four runners broke away at the front: Chelimo; Kiplagat; Amy Cragg of the United States; and Kenya's Flomena Cheyech Daniel. Kiplagat made the next push, and led with just over to go; Canadian Runnings Sinead Mulhern compared the finish to that of the Boston Marathon earlier in the year, when Kiplagat had beaten Chelimo in a sprint finish. On this occasion, Chelimo counter- attacked and moved back ahead of Kiplagat, who could not respond; and Chelimo held on to claim the gold medal by seven seconds, in 2:27:11.
NY 21 departs the bypass, following NY 332 into downtown, while US 20 and NY 5 continue onto the four-lane, median separated Eastern Boulevard, the original section of the US 20 and NY 5 bypasses of Canandaigua. The roadway acts a centre of commerce for the city, sporting restaurants, hotels, and supermarkets along its length within the city limits. Upon exiting the city, the establishments become a pair of shopping plazas centred around the intersection with the northern terminus of NY 364\. Across the town line in Hopewell a quarter-mile to the east, a third plaza, anchored by Runnings, formerly a Walmart, dominates the northeast corner of CR 10 and Eastern Boulevard.

Future U. S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Exterminator won the first three runnings of the Pimlico Cup beginning with the inaugural edition on November 13, 1919. The race of November 15, 1924, won by Altawood, was run in a snowstorm so heavy at times that the horses were barely visible and the colors undistinguishable. The Pimlico Cup was not run from 1931 through 1943 as a result of cutbacks necessitated by the Great Depression. Restarting was delayed further by the December 1941 entry of the United States into World War II. On its return in 1944, Megogo set a new track record for 2½ miles with a time of 4:20 1/5.
The 1998 Australian Touring Car season was the 39th year of touring car racing in Australia since the first runnings of the Australian Touring Car Championship and the fore-runner of the present day Bathurst 1000, the Armstrong 500. Two major touring car categories raced in Australia during 1998, V8 Supercar and Super Touring. Between them there were 23 touring car race meetings held during 1998; a ten-round series for V8 Supercars, the 1998 Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC); an eight-round series for Super Touring, the 1998 Australian Super Touring Championship (ASTC); support programme events at the 1998 Australian Grand Prix and 1998 Honda Indy 300 and three stand alone long distance races, nicknamed 'enduros'.
Anzum was a bay gelding with no white markings bred by the Herefordshire-based Cobhall Court Stud. He was sired by Ardross, an outstanding stayer who won thirteen Group races including two runnings of the Ascot Gold Cup and was British Horse of the Year in 1982. As a breeding stallion he made an impact as a sire of National Hunt horses including the Champion Hurdler Alderbrook, Young Kenny (Scottish Grand National), Avro Anson (Dipper Novices' Chase) and Burgoyne (West Yorkshire Hurdle): he is also the paternal grandsire of Coneygree. Anzum's dam Muznah was a fairly useful racehorse, winning two of her nine races and achieving a Timeform racing of 92 in 1983.
He remained in his position of play-by-play announcer for University of Kentucky basketball for 39 years. His last game as an announcer for a Kentucky basketball game was in 1992, when Kentucky fell to Duke 104-103 in overtime in the NCAA East Regional Final, a game widely considered to be the greatest college basketball game ever played. In a gesture of appreciation, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski walked to the broadcast area immediately after the game's conclusion and congratulated Ledford on his career. He also worked as the play-by-play announcer for national radio broadcasts of the NCAA Men's Final Four on the CBS Radio Network, and called many runnings of the Kentucky Derby for CBS Radio.
Risk Me was a tall, leggy chestnut horse, with a broad white blaze and a white sock on his left hind leg bred in France by Padovest Inc. In 1985 he was consigned to Deauville Yearling sale and was sold for 220,000 francs (£18,600). During his racing career the colt was owned by Lewis Norris and trained by Paul Kelleway at his Shalfleet stables on the Bury Road in Newmarket. Kelleway was a former National Hunt jockey who had great success as a trainer with cheaply-bought horses including African Song, Swiss Maid and Madam Gay He was from the first crop of foal sired by Sharpo, a sprinter whose wins included three consecutive runnings of the William Hill Sprint Championship.
Molvedo was a brown horse standing 1.68 metres bred near Varese in Italy by the Razza Ticino. He was from the first crop of foals sired by Ribot, the best horse ever trained in Italy, who was unbeaten in a career of 16 races including two runnings of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and the 1956 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Molvedo's dam, Maggiolina, was a descendant of the British broodmare Pearl Maiden and therefore from the same branch of Thoroughbred family 16-b which produced the Prix de l'Ard de Triomphe winner Pearl Cap and The Derby winner Pearl Diver. The colt was owned by Egidio Verga and trained throughout his career by Arturo Maggi near Milan.
His recording of "You Can Get It If You Really Want" was used as a campaign anthem by the Sandinista National Liberation Front in the 1990 election in Nicaragua. In 1991, he performed at the second Rock in Rio festival in Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He continued to sell well in Jamaica and, to a lesser extent, the UK, returning to the mainstream pop charts in the U.S. and elsewhere (#1 in France) with a version of Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now" on the Cool Runnings film soundtrack in 1993. In 1995, Cliff released the single "Hakuna Matata", a collaboration with Lebo M, a song from the soundtrack of the film The Lion King.
They performed at NYC Summer Stage and The International Music and Arts Festival in New Orleans, LA. and other Reggae festivals in the United States. In 2007 they appeared alongside reggae artists Beres Hammond and Marcia Griffiths for the "For The Love of It Tour", playing many sold out dates including House of Blues in LA, San Diego and Atlantic City, the Roxy in Boston, BB Kings in NYC and Hard Rock Live in Orlando. Robinson travels back and forth to Jamaica as an actor, and has portrayed Jamaicans in some of his movie roles such as Derice Bannock in Cool Runnings. He has worked with the charity Upliftment Jamaica, which is a social service organization aimed at providing recreation, education, and health services for St. Thomas.
Landau and her twin brother, Paul, were born in Brooklyn, New York, to Sidney Landau, a studio executive at United Artists, and Bea Landau. She attended Springfield Gardens High School in Queens, New York, and received a bachelor's degree political science from Brandeis University in 1974. She executive produced 1983's Tiger Town, the first television film produced by the Disney Channel, which won a 1984 CableACE Award for Best Dramatic Film, as well as the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color: Young Harry Houdini in 1987, which earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Children's Program. Landau was best known for producing the 1993 comedic film, Cool Runnings, which was loosely based on the Jamaica national bobsleigh team's 1988 Winter Olympics debut.
Shoot A Line was a "lengthy, lightly-made" bay filly with a white star and white socks on her hind legs bred by her owner Arthur Budgett. She was not a particularly attractive filly, being described by Timeform as resembling "a bag of bones", during the summer of her three-year-old season. Her dam, Death Ray, was a half-sister to the July Cup winner Daylight Robbery and produced several other winners including More Light, a colt who won the Gordon Stakes and the Jockey Club Stakes. Shoot A Line's sire High Line was a specialist stayer who won three runnings of the Jockey Club Cup before becoming a very successful breeding stallion whose other progeny included Master Willie.
One of the most fictionalized parts of Cool Runnings is the competition itself. The bobsled competition in the film consists of three individual runs held on three consecutive days, whereas in reality, the Olympic bobsled competition consists of four runs - two runs a day held over two consecutive days. In the film, the Jamaicans are regarded as unwelcome outsiders to the Games by other countries (particularly East Germany) and ridiculed. In reality, the Jamaicans were treated as equals and there was no real animosity between the team and their competitors; in fact, the Jamaicans were aided by the United States team who lent them one of their backup sleds so they could qualify, so they did not have to buy another team's spare sled.
He captured back-to-back runnings of the Kentucky Oaks in 1894 and 1895, the latter a year in which he won 144 races and finished in the money sixty percent of the time. In 1895 he won the Arkansas Derby and in 1896 finished third in the Preakness Stakes aboard the filly, Intermission. Alonzo Clayton, circa 1898 However, by the start of the 20th century, racism began to raise its ugly head and opportunities to ride soon vanished as stable owners switched to using white riders only. Within a few years, African-American jockeys, who had dominated racing for centuries and who had played a major role in bringing Thoroughbred racing to the forefront of American sport, were forced out of the business.

On 22 October, Sanedtki attempted to become the first horse in twenty-four years to win consecutive runnings of the Prix de la Forêt, and started 11/10 favourite in a field which included King of Macedon, Faraway Times and Polyponder. She recorded her third Group One win, beating the British-trained outsider Green Girl by two lengths. On her final race in Europe, Sanedtki was brought back in distance for the Vernons Sprint Cup over six furlongs at Haydock Park Racecourse and started favourite ahead of the Ayr Gold Cup winner Vaigly Great. She looked likely to win entering the last quarter mile but was unable to sustain her challenge and was beaten three-quarters of a length by the 20/1 outsider Absalom.
The 2010 New Zealand Derby was a horse race which took place at Ellerslie Racecourse on Saturday 6 March 2010. It was the 135th running of the New Zealand Derby, and it was won by Military Move. The race was one of the most highly anticipated runnings of the New Zealand Derby in years, with a dual Group 1-winning colt seeking to win the VRC Derby-New Zealand Derby double and two high-class fillies entered to take on the males in an attempt to secure a rare win for a filly in New Zealand's most prestigious three-year-old race. The favourite was Zarzuela, a daughter of Zabeel who in an impressive Derby campaign won the Great Northern Guineas, Waikato Guineas and Championship Stakes.

It has been covered by many artists throughout the years, including a hit version by Lee Towers where it reached the Top 20 in 1982 charting at No. 19 and another hit version in 1993 by Jimmy Cliff, who re-recorded the song for the motion picture soundtrack of Cool Runnings, where it also reached the Top 20 at No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The 2010 V8 Supercar season was the fourteenth series in which V8 Supercars have contested the senior Australian touring car series. It was the 51st year of touring car racing in Australia since the first runnings of the Australian Touring Car Championship, known today as the V8 Supercar Championship Series, and the fore-runner of the present day Bathurst 1000, the Armstrong 500. The season began on 18 February at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi and finished on 5 December at the Homebush Street Circuit. 2010 featured the fourteenth V8 Supercar Championship Series, consisting of 14 events covering five states and the Northern Territory of Australia as well as events in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and New Zealand.
Younger audiences were introduced to Nash's music with the appearance of Jimmy Cliff's cover of "I Can See Clearly Now" in Disney's 1993 hit film Cool Runnings, and Nash's original version appeared over the opening scene of John Cusack's 1997 film, Grosse Point Blank. In May 2006, Nash was singing again at SugarHill Recording Studios and at Tierra Studios in his native Houston. Working with SugarHill chief engineer Andy Bradley and Tierra Studios' Randy Miller, he began the work of transferring analog tapes of his songs from the 1970s and 1980s to Pro Tools digital format. On June 25, 2019, The New York Times Magazine listed Nash among hundreds of artists whose material was reportedly destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire.
In the spring of 1996, Soviet Line finished unplaced in the Abernant Stakes and was then beaten a short head by Gabr (to whom he was conceding six pounds) in the Sandown Mile. On 18 May the gelding was ridden by Richard Quinn as he attempted to become the first horse in 25 years to win back-to-back runnings of the Lockinge Stakes and started the 13/2 third favourite behind Spectrum and Charnwood Forset. The other four runners included Gabr and the three-year-old Smart Alec. He raced in second behind Gabr before going to the front a furlong out and got the better of Charnwood Forest to win by a neck with a four length gap back to Spectrum in third.

Teleprompter again finished unplaced on his seasonal debut but then failed by only a short-head against Prismatic in Lockinge Stakes (then a Group Two race) at Newbury Racecourse. In July he was ridden by Tony Ives as won his second Pacemaker International, beating Northern Plain by six lengths and then finished second to Parliament in the Land of Burns Stakes. In August Teleprompter was accompanied by his fellow British challengers King of Clubs and Free Guest as he was sent to contest the fifth running of the Arlington Million in Chicago. British-trained horses had had considerable success in the race: Tolomeo had won in 1983 after Madam Gay had run third and Be My Native had finished second in the first two runnings.
Freedman later reflected that it was a 'funny feeling' in that, while he would have preferred to win, he was 'happy' that the O'Sullivans (trainers Paul and Dave and jockey Lance) had won because he had always had friendly relations with them and they had finished second in three previous runnings of the race - with Shivaree (1979), (Our) Waverley Star (1986), and Horlicks (1988). Surfers Paradise became the third New Zealand Derby winner - after Bonecrusher (1985) and Castletown (1989) - to pass $2 million in prizemoney. After this preparation, Surfers Paradise had a further 22 starts in New Zealand, and won six races, including the Hawke's Bay Cup. In three subsequent visits to Australia, however, he finished near the tail of the field in each of his six starts.

After retiring to stud in 1991, he sired 153 individual stakes winners of 350 stakes races, including Vengeance of Rain, who won the Dubai Sheema Classic and holds the earnings record in Hong Kong. Zabeel has also sired the Australian champions Octagonal and Might And Power, who won 17 Group One races between them, including the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, two Cox Plates, three runnings of the Mercedes Classic, and the Sydney three-year-old triple crown. One of Zabeel's half-brothers, Baryshnikov (by Kenmare), also won the Australian Guineas (in 1995) and retired to stud, while another winning half-brother, Break The Vault (by Redoute's Choice), entered stud in 2006.Break The Vault at stud Zabeel died in his paddock at Cambridge Stud on 25 September 2015.
The event was inaugurated on 10 August 1991 with a purse of US$1 million and immediately became the premier event of the racing season at Del Mar. The first running was won by the 1990 California Horse of the Year three year old Best Pal in a time of 1:59.. Best Pal would run two more times finishing third to Bertrando in 1993 and second to Tinners Way in 1994. The event was classified as Grade I for the third running in 1993 and has held that class since. Notable among the runnings of the race was the 1996 renewal that saw champion Cigar attempt to best Citation's mark of 16 straight victories, but fall to a shocking upset by the unheralded 39-1 Dare And Go and jockey Alex Solis.

James Chambers OM (born 1 April 1948), known professionally as Jimmy Cliff, is a Jamaican ska and reggae musician, multi-instrumentalist, singer, and actor. Along with Bunny Wailer he is one of only two living musicians to hold the Order of Merit, the highest honour that can be granted by the Jamaican government for achievements in the arts and sciences. Cliff is best known among mainstream audiences for songs such as "Wonderful World, Beautiful People", "Many Rivers to Cross", "You Can Get It If You Really Want", "The Harder They Come", "Reggae Night", and "Hakuna Matata", and his covers of Cat Stevens's "Wild World" and Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now" from the film Cool Runnings. He starred in the film The Harder They Come, which helped popularize reggae across the world, and Club Paradise.

Oscar Schindler began his fourth season of racing by finishing second to the filly Dance Design in the Tattersalls Gold Cup on 25 May but twelve days later in the Coronation Cup at Epsom Racecourse he ran poorly when coming home last of the five runners behind Singspiel. The horse was off the course for over two months before returning in the Royal Whip Stakes in August when he finished a close third behind King Alex and Rayouni. On 20 September, Oscar Schindler attempted to become the first horse to win two runnings of the Irish St. Leger and started the 2/1 joint favourite alongside his old rival Classic Cliche. The other five runners were Persian Punch, Whitewater Affair (John Porter Stakes), Samraan (King George V Stakes), Family Tradition (Debutante Stakes) and the undefeated Stage Affair.
After a break of almost three months, Grass Wonder returned for the Grade II Mainichi Okan over 1800 metres at Tokyo on 10 October and won from Meisho Odo and Embrasser Moi. On 26 December at Nakayama, Grass Wonder attempted to become the fourth horse following Speed Symboli, Symboli Rudolf and Oguri Cap to win back-to-back runnings of the Arima Kinen. His main opponents in the fourteen runner field included Mejiro Bright, Narita Top Road (Kikuka Sho), Phalaenopsis, Special Week, Stay Gold, Symboli Indy (NHK Mile Cup) and T M Opera O (Satsuki Sho). The race produced a dramatic finish with the lead changing hand several times in the last 200 metres, but Grass Wonder prevailed by a nose and a neck from Special Week and T M Opera O with Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi half a length away in fourth.
On his first appearance of the next season, Bacchanal returned to the smaller obstacles for the Long Distance Hurdle over three miles at Newbury on 30 November and started 7/2 third favourite behind Deano's Beeno who had won two of the last three runnings of the race and the West Yorkshire Hurdle winner Brother Joe. Despite repeatedly jumping to the right, he led for most of the way and stayed on in the closing stages to win by five lengths and three lengths from Native Emperor and Deano's Beano. In December, Bacchanal moved back to fences and started 100/30 second favourite as he made his second attempt to win the King George VI Chase. He led in the early stages and was in contention for most of the race before finishing third behind Best Mate and Marlborough.

In 1983, he was commissioned to direct Cool Runnings: The Reggae Movie, a 105-minute concert film, at the 1983 Sunsplash Festival in Montego Bay, Jamaica. In 1983/1984, with funding from Britain's Channel 4 Television, he directed Gospel According To Al Green, a 94-minute portrait of soul singer and gospel preacher Al Green. In 1985, with funding once again from Britain's Channel 4, he directed The Return Of Ruben Blades, an 82-minute portrait of actor-lawyer-singer-songwriter Ruben Blades. In 1986, with funding from Britain's Channel 4, Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun, Fantasy Records, and others, he directed Saxophone Colossus, a 101-minute portrait of jazz great Sonny Rollins. In 1987, with funding from the State of Hawaii, Sony Video Software, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, he directed Hawaiian Rainbow, an 85-minute film on the history of Hawaiian music.
In July the mare was dropped to Group Three class and sent to Ireland for the Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh add started 5/4 favourite ahead of five opponents including Sole Power, G Force (Haydock Sprint Cup) and Brando (Sprint Stakes). She race close behind the leaders, took the lead two furlongs out and drew away to win by three lengths from Brando. Explaining the mare's improvement from her previous start, Dods said that Mecca's Angle had been in season at Ascot as well as being unsuited by the ground conditions. On 19 August Mecca's Angel attempted to become the first horse to win back-to-back runnings of the Nunthorpe Stakes at York since Sharpo recorded his third consecutive success in 1982 (Borderlescott had won the race in 2008 and 2009 but the first of his victories came when the race was run at Newmarket).
John Franklin Candy (October 31, 1950 – March 4, 1994) was a Canadian actor and comedian known mainly for his work in Hollywood films. Candy rose to fame as a member of the Toronto branch of the Second City and its related Second City Television series, and through his appearances in such comedy films as Stripes, Splash, Cool Runnings, Summer Rental, Home Alone, The Great Outdoors, Spaceballs, and Uncle Buck, as well as more dramatic roles in Only the Lonely and JFK. One of his most renowned onscreen performances was as Del Griffith, the talkative shower-curtain ring salesman in the John Hughes comedy Planes, Trains and Automobiles. In addition to his work as an actor, Candy was a co- owner of the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League from 1991 until his death, and the team won the 1991 Grey Cup under his ownership.
The 2007 V8 Supercar season was the 48th year of touring car racing in Australia since the first runnings of the Australian Touring Car Championship and the fore-runner of the present day Bathurst 1000, the Armstrong 500. There were 15 touring car race meetings held during 2007; a fourteen-round series for V8 Supercars, the 2007 V8 Supercar Championship Series (VCS), two of them endurance races and a seven-round second tier V8 Supercar series 2007 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series (FVS), all bar one of those was a double-header with a V8 Supercar Championship Series round. This season saw a change of television broadcaster; the Seven Network having picked up the broadcasting rights to V8 Supercars from Network Ten and Fox Sports which had broadcast the past nine seasons in succession. However, the Seven Network had lost the rights to V8 Supercars in 2014.
In the early summer of 1999, French Holly was sent to compete in France where he was based with Murphy's daughter in Normandy and reportedly enjoyed excursions to the beach at Deauville. In the Prix La Barka 4300 metres on soft ground at Auteuil Hippodrome on 30 May, he was matched against some of the leading French hurdlers including Bog Frog and Earl Grant, the winners of the last two runnings of the Grande Course de Haies d'Auteuil (French Champion Hurdle). He took the lead at the final hurdle and won by three lengths from Kimbi, with a gap of eight lengths back to Mon Romain in third. A reportedly "ecstatic" Murphy said that "the whole purpose of bringing him here and running him over the bigger obstacles was to give him the experience he needs for a chasing campaign next season and we want to win the Millennium Gold Cup".

Visions of Dennis Brown was given a wider distribution via a deal between Lightning Records and WEA and topped the UK reggae album chart in September 1978, this chart run lasting for five months.Reel, p. 84. In August 1978, Brown returned to the UK, bringing Junior Delgado with him, and DEB Music released a series of singles, although they sold moderately compared to the label's earlier successes, but in the same month, Brown's breakthrough single was first released. Initially released as a discomix featuring a new version of "Money in my Pocket" and the deejay version "Cool Runnings" by Price Mohamed, which became unavailable for a time after quickly selling out its first pressing, this single gave Brown his first UK Top 40 hit, reaching number 14 the following year and becoming one of the biggest international hits in Jamaica's history,Roberts (2006), p. 81.

Corruption, veniality, sectarianism, and other elements forming what Rastafarians call the 'politricks' of Jamaica are noted, but the principal force for evil is squarely diagnosed as the international cocaine trade, in its facilitation of material corruption, in the morally deadening toleration of violence it promotes, and in the appalling opportunity cost it imposes on national infrastructure, education, and business. From this history a series of vignettes emerge, of profits turned, of a needless death on the operating table caused by a substandard generator, of extrajudicial killing by a special police squad, and of events in the life of a principal cocaine baron—Adam's sometime friend, Nathan. Eventually an enforcer named Blaka, spurred by religious conversion, becomes an informer for Adam, whose journalism begins to expose too many secrets of the 'runnings', or details of shipments and transactions.
