In 1984 Living Death released their rough-sounding debut album Vengeance of Hell which, despite poor production quality, sold well in all independent charts. Living Death then went on tour in support of Warlock; after which they fired drummer Harald Lutze and replaced him with Andreas Overhoff. In January 1985 they released the EP Watch-Out! with three remixed songs from the first LP and the self-titled track.

Arthroleptella rugosa is a species of frog in the family Pyxicephalidae. It is endemic to South Africa and only known from the Klein Swartberg Mountain, an inselberg near Caledon, Western Cape. The specific name rugosa is Latin for wrinkled or rough and refers to the rough appearance of this species (caused by distinct glandular tubercles ) as well as its rough sounding advertisement call. Accordingly, common name rough moss frog has been suggested for it.

Described by Leng as "growled", Harrison's rough-sounding singing on "Ding Dong" shows the effects of a long-standing throat problem. In tigers, it has been found that low-pitched vocalizations, such as prusten, originate from vibrations of thick vocal folds in the larynx of the cat. Sound production is facilitated by the low threshold pressure required to oscillate the vocal folds, and low glottal resistance. The rough-sounding quality of the low-pitched vocalizations is likely generated by the complex pattern of vocal vibrations, caused by the excitation of multiple modes of oscillation simultaneously. Prusten also involves air being exhaled through the nose at the same time as through the mouth.

Gospel is overtly represented on "Belongs to God", while Saadiq's vocals throughout the album are characterized by gospel-style shouts, along with crooning and whispered singing. The album's soul songs have uniform rhythms overall, although "Kings Fall", "My Walk", and "I'm Feeling Love" feature dissonance in the form of clashing electronic sounds and erratic vocals, reflecting themes of distress in their narratives. Saadiq sings over rough-sounding synthesizer sounds in a bluesy, soulful cadence on "My Walk", which is "his biggest musical departure, and also the album's most frankly autobiographical track", says Gaillot. According to Nashville Scene writer Stephen Trageser, Jimmy Lees literary narratives about cycles of poverty, addiction, and incarceration are placed in the framework of "futuristic soul" and "warped, swirling beats", resulting in a tone that Greg Kot describes as murky throughout.

Then, in July/August/October 2012, he released his seventh studio album Mirage of Bliss in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK, Ireland, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Japan and the USA, again on his own record label Blue Soldier Records, and in autumn of the same year, the album was released in Mainland China (by this time on Gold Typhoon Music), Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea (by this time on Leeway). On the album, produced by British producer Martin Glover a.k.a. Youth, who had previously worked with Paul McCartney, The Verve and Embrace, Hecker once more plays all instruments, except for the bass guitar which is contributed by Glover. With its lush Britpop sound, Mirage Of Bliss could be regarded as the opposite of its rough sounding predecessor I Am Nothing But Emotion, No Human Being, No Son, Never Again Son.
