Afroedura rondavelica, also known as the Blyde River flat gecko or rondavel rock gecko, is a species of African geckos, first found in the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa. Its specific and common name refers to the rondavel, a southern African hut-type structure.

An undecorated rondavel An African-style hut known in literature as cone on cylinder or cone on drum, but popularly referred to simply as rondavel (from the Afrikaans word rondawel). It has largely undergone Westernization in its recent developments, but it also remains the popular perception of a traditional indigenous settlement.

The rondavel is usually round or oval in shape and is traditionally made with materials that can be locally found in raw form. Its walls are often constructed from stones. The mortar may consist of sand, soil, or combinations of these, mixed with cow dung. The floor of a traditional rondavel is finished with a dung mixture to make it hard and smooth.

The streets remain unpaved. The houses are primarily constructed with modern methods, but there is also a mixture of traditional Rondavel structures. My Darling also has a substantial area dedicated to farming. Throughout the town there are stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

A Southern African rondavel (or banda) The type of structure and materials used for a dwelling vary depending on how permanent it is. Frequently moved nomadic structures will be lightweight and simple, more permanent ones will be less so. When people settle somewhere permanently, the architecture of their dwellings will change to reflect that. Materials used will become heavier, more solid and more durable.

The Mants'ase Children's Home was started in 1979 as home for unwanted girls by Father Patrick M. Maekane, a retired Anglican priest and founder of the Mophato oa Mants'ase Society. After the initial buildings have been built by local women the first child was admitted in February 1980. The Home is located in Qhalasi in the Mohale's Hoek district of the Kingdom of Lesotho. Rondavel which housed orphans at Mants'ase Children's Home before the new dormitory was built.

In 1967, the Lesotho government declared the mountain a national monument. In the 1990s, the United Nation Development Programme in conjunction with the Basotho government, initiated the Preservation and Presentation of Thaba Bosiu, the national monument to preserve this historical landmark. This mountain has become a tourist attraction, with a conference centre, a cultural village and many rondavel type of accommodation. To keep the cultural significance, several political organisations held meetings or rallies at Thaba Bosiu.

Before reaching Shelley Beach the railway traversed several river bridges along the Hibiscus Coast. The train then veered inland and chugged up through banana plantations and cane fields towards Izotsha, passed through lush sub-tropical native forests and rondavel-dotted hillsides, before stopping in Paddock for lunch and then the direct return journey. Although PCNGR had proposals to reopen the line to Harding, in December 2005 Transnet shut the Banana Express, after they decreed a lease did not exist between SAR and PCNGR. On 18 June 2008 a huge storm hit the coast, which resulted in large amounts of flash flooding.

The main roofing elements of a rondavel are spars or poles taken from tree limbs, which have been harvested and cut to length. The roof covering is of thatch that is sewn to the poles with grass rope. The process of completing the thatch can take as little as one weekend or up to a year if made by a skilled artisan, as it must be sewn in one section at a time, starting from the bottom working towards the top. As each section is sewn, it may be weathered and aged to form a complete weatherproof seal.

The principals (wooden poles running radially out from the apex of the roof to the top of the rondavel's wall) are fully supported by the circular purlins: First, the principals do not sag in the middle, because sagging only puts the purlins near the middle of the principals under compression. Second, the principals do not splay at the bottom (push the top of the walls over to the outside) because splaying only puts the purlins near the bottom of the principals under tension. Thus it is possible to build a large rondavel without internal bracing for the roof. Traditional African rondavels range in size depending on the availability of building and construction materials.

He retired early from his job in a shipping office, and with his wife, Margaret, went to live in a pair of rondavel mud huts overlooking the mouth of the Quinera River at Bonza Bay, on the outskirts of East London, where they raised their son, Reggie. Albert Rose-Innes married Margaret Evelyn Foster (born 1885, Wells, Somerset, England and died 1991 in Johannesburg, South Africa). They had one son, Reginald Rose-Innes (born East London, South Africa, 28 February 1915, died Ringmer, East Sussex, England, 16 January 2012); one grandson, Crispin Rose-Innes (born Johannesburg, South Africa 27 January 1949); and one grand-daughter, Joanna Rose-Innes (born Crawley, England 7 December 1954).
