The former Ninth Street ("Singing") Bridge was a primitive affair built rather low over the river, and whose creosote-treated wooden deck was fitted with strips of metal plates spaced a tire-track apart to prevent excessive wear. As the tires rolled along, these plates, embossed to provide traction, would give off a high humming note—a note that suddenly would rise by about a fifth as a vehicle crossed from south to north: presumably the embossed pattern changed at that point. Returning to Southside in the other lane, the note would remain the same all the way across. The former Ninth Street Bridge was closed and barely escaped submergence during river flooding resulting from Hurricane Camille in 1969, strengthening the resolve of engineers that the replacement would be high above even flood levels of the river.

The town used to have a school named Pantego High School. The town was hit by a tornado 1991, and another in October 11, 2002, an F2 tornado that was spawned by Hurricane Kyle (2002), and destroyed two houses and a farm. The most recent tornado, rated EF2 was on April 7, 2014. It rolled along Pantego Creek, ran along one of its canals, Cuckold's Creek, and almost hit a railroad bridge and Highway 264, it took a turn, hit through a small marsh, split a house in half, and threw a truck over 40 feet high and threw it in a nearby field, the two occurred 5 feet from each other, the tornado then curved into a forest, destroying a Hardee's billboard, and rolled across the Cuckold's Creek again, and it slid along a field, until it curved into four houses on one side of the road, turned, hit another house across the street, hit another field.
