A8. with two friends off the coast of San Francisco near the Golden Gate Bridge, when a large wave swept him overboard. Searches conducted by the Coast Guard and by a private company hired by friends and family were unsuccessful.
Andrew Friend, a contemporary of Matthews,' also takes an immersive approach to his own seascapes. Matthews original inspiration for his way of working was a 2007 near-death experience. This occurred while he was surfing off Mexico, when the sea became increasingly rough and he became separated from his surfboard. He was eventually hit by a rogue wave; by then he was "floundering in the ocean with a gut-wrenching sense of fear, being completely at the mercy of the ocean," he later recalled.
Her first album, Like the Linen, was released in 2005 and led to a tour as a solo artist supporting Laura Veirs the following year. In 2007 she collaborated with Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards as 'Merrillthaocracy' releasing the "Tuvalu" single. She subsequently signed to the Kill Rock Stars label, releasing the Tucker Martine-produced We Brave Bee Stings and All album in 2008. In 2008 she duetted with Zach Rogue of Rogue Wave at the 'Revenge of the Book Eaters' benefit show in New York City.
Dallas also came upon the Queen Elizabeth 2 on that patrol, which reported taking a rogue wave over the bow that cracked windows on the bridge. The Captain Cosmo was lost with all hands in high seas. In April 1979, as Dallas was wrapping up a patrol and heading into Bermuda for a weekend of R&R;, she received orders to sail south to the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent. Its volcano, La Soufrière, was threatening to erupt and Dallas might be called upon to evacuate islanders.
Brief, short-range radio contact was made with Sunderland, who said she had righted the boat and was uninjured. Despite earlier fears that her sailing yacht had lost its keel and capsized, the boat was upright but dismasted, its rig dragging in the ocean from the broken mast, making satellite phone reception impossible. Sunderland's mother said the pilot of the Australian search plane told her the boat had probably been "rolled by a rogue wave." Her father said his daughter's circumnavigation attempt had come to an end.
On February 25th, 2020 Heringer released "Let Me Into Your Heart : A Tribute To George Harrison." The album consisted of 17th tracks written or recorded by Harrison from his solo albums as well as his time with The Beatles and The Traveling Wilburys. The album was released on what would have been Harrison's 77th birthday. The album featured performances by many of Heringer's frequent collaborators - Madi Diaz, Geographer (Band), Paul McDonald (musician), Cary Brothers, Avid Dancer, Zach of Rogue Wave (band) and Clara-Nova.
She damaged the parking garage support columns and the bow of the ship. In January 2006, a rogue wave was encountered off the coast of Tortola. In March 2011, Norwegian Spirit was over 12 hours late due to a death on the ship and a collision into the pier in Mexico. In October 2019, passengers held protests on a two-week cruise of Europe after planned stops were cancelled, toilets became blocked, and the cruise line offered as compensation a 25 percent discount off future cruises.
Producer Neil Martinson was the first person in San Francisco to book harpist Joanna Newsom, with another MCMAF producer, Jon Fellman doing her sound. Former Mission Creek acts include Devendra Banhart, Deerhoof, Erase Errata, The Oh Sees, Kelly Stoltz, Rogue Wave, and Vetiver, all of whom developed national followings. The producers also have an eye for talented visual artists. Among the local artists who have designed posters for the festival are Jo Jackson, and Andrew Schultz, key artists in the "Mission School", highly centered on "Adobe Books".
While passing near the British Isles on September 6 as an extratropical storm, Danielle produced severe sea conditions on the western part of the isles. Major beach erosion was observed, and many people required rescuing. Coastal portions of Cornwall were evacuated as high waves inundated many homes, and an all-terrain police vehicle was shoved into the sea by a rogue wave in the Isles of Scilly. An 11‑year-old boy and his father were trapped in a sea cave on the north coast of Cornwall due to rough surf.
Radar image of Ivan near landfall After entering the southern Gulf of Mexico, Hurricane Ivan weakened to Category 4 status by 0600 UTC on September 14. When Ivan entered the Gulf of Mexico, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory ocean-floor pressure sensors detected a freak wave, which was caused by the hurricane. The wave was around high from peak to trough, and around long.Hurricane Ivan prompts rogue wave rethink, The Register, 5 August 2005 Their computer models also indicated that waves may have exceeded 130 feet (40 m) in the eyewall.
One of the Jayhawks returned to evacuate the remaining crew and, by 18:15, only the master and a Coast Guard rescue swimmer were still to be lifted off the ship. A rogue wave broke over the ship's bow and the helicopter was engulfed in spray. Its engines flamed out from water ingestion and the helicopter crashed into the sea and sank. Alex Haleys HH-65B Dolphin was airborne and was able to rescue the three members of the Jayhawk's crew but only one of the seven members of the ship's crew.
On 28 February 1903, Etruria was leaving New York when she ran aground on sand and mud in the entrance to Gedney Channel. After she was refloated later the same day there was no damage found and she set off on her voyage to Liverpool. On 10 October 1903, Etruria was only four hours out of New York when at 2:30 pm the ship was struck by a rogue wave. The wave was reported to be at least 50 feet (15 meters) high, and struck the ship on the port side.
With knowledge that the ship was certain to be wrecked, Brown ordered those aboard into lifeboats. Before his order could be carried out, a rogue wave swept over Margaret Olwill and capsized the ship, which soon sank at approximately 6 am. Before he was tossed overboard, Luke Schinski had the presence of mind to grab a piece of canvas for assistance in rescue. Four of the crew were rescued by the steamer State of Ohio and the steamer Sacramento, who found the men clinging to the boat's wreckage.
In addition to a new name, the vessel also received a new paint scheme; the overall black scheme was replaced by a grey coloration similar to that of a naval vessel. The ship was damaged by a rogue wave of while pursuing the Japanese whaling fleet off the western coast of Australia on 28 December 2011.The MV Brigitte Bardot was escorted back to Fremantle by the SSCS flagship, . The main hull was cracked and the port side pontoon was being held together by straps. The vessel arrived at Fremantle Harbour on 5 January 2012.
Once over the Gulf of Mexico, Ivan weakened slightly to Category 4 strength, which it maintained while approaching the Gulf Coast of the United States.
On the night of 2 June the ship ran into a gale. In the early hours of 3 June she was hit by a sudden squall and a large wave, possibly a rogue wave, and was knocked down onto her starboard side. Although the ship had been converted to a sail training and charter cruise ship, she had retained the main cargo hatch from her days as a commercial vessel. When she was knocked down the main hatch was breached and water flooded into the interior of the ship.
Mastering symbolic math was a herculean task; but numerical capabilities were critical to get a piece of the much larger engineering and lower-end scientific markets. At MIT Macsyma had a link to the IMSL (now Rogue Wave Software) numerical libraries, but this link was severed when Macsyma moved to Symbolics. Lisp developers at Symbolics generally believed that numerical analysis was an old technology that was not important for Lisp applications, so they declined to invest in it. Double precision arithmetic in Macsyma (on a PC version) was about six times slower than Fortran.
In June, the company announced that CEO Janet Dryer was moving to the role of Chair of the Board, and COO/CFO Mark Ties was taking the role of CEO. In October, the company acquired mobile and web automation testing company Perfecto. In December 2018, Perforce announced the acquisition of Perfecto, a market leader in cloud-based automated mobile and web application test software solutions. In January 2019, Perforce announced the acquisition of Rogue Wave Software, a software company with a focus on development tools for high-performance computing.
Since Rebecca was not found on the ship despite a thorough search, investigators concluded that she went overboard, possibly as a result of a rogue wave. The Coriams and their lawyer say they never received a copy of the final report as they were promised by the Bahamanian police; British detectives who did receive it have refused repeated Freedom of Information Act requests for a copy on the grounds that it contains restricted personal information. A crew member told Ronson that the call was taped. Several others believed it was with a romantic partner.
It was also attributed to at least six fatalities after sending a rogue wave across the steerage of the steamer Campania. The first storm also resulted in two deaths after a schooner wrecked in Barbados. The season's activity was reflected with an accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) rating of 28, the lowest value since 1864. ACE is, broadly speaking, a measure of the power of the hurricane multiplied by the length of time it existed, so storms that last a long time, as well as particularly strong hurricanes, have high ACEs.
Rogue waves have now been proven to be the cause of the sudden loss of some ocean-going vessels. Well-documented instances include the freighter MS München, lost in 1978. A rogue wave has been implicated in the loss of other vessels including the Ocean Ranger, which was a semi-submersible mobile offshore drilling unit that sank in Canadian waters on 15 February 1982. In 2007 the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration compiled a catalogue of more than 50 historical incidents probably associated with rogue waves.
The formal forensic investigation concluded that the ship sank because of structural failure and absolved the crew of any responsibility. Most notably, the report determined the detailed sequence of events that led to the structural failure of the vessel. A third comprehensive analysis was subsequently done by Douglas Faulkner, professor of marine architecture and ocean engineering at the University of Glasgow. His 2001 report linked the loss of the Derbyshire with the emerging science on freak waves, concluding that the Derbyshire was almost certainly destroyed by a rogue wave.
The broad flat rocks at the base of the cliff are high enough to be out of most of the surf in stormy seas, yet low enough to be awash in a rogue wave. At the time this photo was taken, the lake was about 1.8 feet below its long term average level. The wind was from the south at about 15 mph, gusting to about 25 mph. In the "Detail of NOAA Chart #14909" (above), Deathdoor Bluff is the point at the far left of the chart.
Now or Never published Mason's first children's book, A Pug Called Poppy, in the fall of 2017. A fourth novel, The Rogue Wave, is to be published in 2021. Mason began a new career in 2015 as a voice-, television- and film-actor. He has roles in the feature films Super Detention, A Witches' Ball, Santa's Castle, Christmas with a Prince, Christmas with a Prince: Becoming Royal, A Christmas in Paris, Hometown Holiday, Love by Accident, A Dog in Paris, The Customer, Behanding, The Mechanical Boy, Bloodslinger, Darts and Speak Your Mind.
In 1999 they wrote the Zend Engine, the core of PHP 4, and founded Zend Technologies, which has since overseen PHP advances, including the PHP 5 and most recent PHP 7 releases. The name Zend is a portmanteau of their forenames, Zeev and Andi. Gutmans served as CEO of Zend Technologies until October 2015 when Zend was acquired by Rogue Wave Software. Before being appointed CEO in February 2009, he led Zend's R&D; including development of all Zend products and Zend's contributions to the open-source Zend Framework and PHP Development Tools projects.
On the night of 24 January 1928, she was struck by a rogue wave in heavy seas, and almost capsized; one woman, already ill when she boarded in Launceston, died.Plowman, p. 65. alt=Black and white photograph of passenger ship with twin funnels, under steam As well as passengers, Nairana regularly carried cargo, including gold bullion, and live animals such as horses and cattle between Tasmania and the mainland. A Tasmanian devil being transported to Melbourne Zoo in a wooden crate placed in one of the ship's four horse stalls escaped by chewing a hole through its box, and was never seen again.Plowman, p. 67–69. In 1934, her code letters were changed to VJGY. Nairana was withdrawn from service in December 1935 as a result of a ship workers' strike, returning to the Bass Strait run in the new year. As she neared Port Phillip Bay on 12 April 1936, on a clear day with apparently calm seas, she was again struck by a rogue wave and rolled onto her port side before swinging back over to starboard and eventually righting. The impact injured most of her 88 passengers and killed four, including a family of three who disappeared after being swept overboard.
A theory advanced to explain the disappearance of the Waratah is an encounter with a freak wave, also known as a rogue wave, in the ocean off the South African coast. Such waves are known to be common in that area of the ocean. It is most likely that the Waratah, with what seems to be marginal stability and already ploughing through a severe storm, was hit by a giant wave. This either rolled the ship over outright or stove in her cargo hatches, filling the holds with water and pulling the ship down almost instantly.
The original lineup consisted of Kevin Corlis on drums, Jim DeLuca and Jamie Matechuk on guitar and vocals, Odie Ouderkirk on keyboard, Eric Krumins on bass, Jasmine Landau on trumpet and violin, and Gabrielle Nadeau on accordion. Since then, The Ghost Is Dancing has gathered considerable speed (and size), playing shows with The Hidden Cameras, Rogue Wave and The Most Serene Republic, and adding multi- instrumentalists Alt Altman, Ben Deschamps and backing vocalist Lesley Davies. Davies, Corlis and Matechuk were all childhood friends from Niagara Falls, Ontario; Ouderkirk and DeLuca also hail from there.Liss, Sarah (April 23, 2009).
In 2011, Donnelly, unhappy with the lack of a books category on Fox-TV's Teen Choice Awards, started Just Add Books on Facebook, in which she appealed to readers to write to Rupert Murdoch and request that a books category be added to the show. In 2012, the Teen Choice Awards added a books category. Fox has never acknowledged Donnelly or Just Add Books. From 2014-2016, Disney published Donnelly's four-book Waterfire Saga (Deep Blue, Rogue Wave, Dark Tide and Sea Spell), which have won numerous awards including the Nature Generation's 2015 Green Earth Book Award.
The band has played shows supporting White Rabbits, Dan Deacon, The Joy Formidable, The Whigs, Holly Miranda, Frightened Rabbit, Rogue Wave, Voxtrot, Hanne Hukkelberg, Har Mar Superstar, Billy Bragg, Tim Fite, French Kicks, The Watson Twins, The Fiery Furnaces, Other Lives, Walk the Moon, Jens Lekman and opened for Sondre Lerche at SXSW 2011. Gram LeBron has been involved in the bands Com Jr, Get Better, The Album Leaf, Port O'Brien, Long and Golden, schrasj, Sad Like Crazy, Conundrum, Jessica Six, All Transistor and has also released solo work as Golden Gram. He currently plays with Outer Embassy and composes for film and commercials. Sonya Westcott was in the band Venus Bleeding before her time with Rogue Wave.
"In 2004 scientists using three weeks of radar images from European Space Agency satellites found ten rogue waves, each or higher." A rogue wave is a natural ocean phenomenon that is not caused by land movement, only lasts briefly, occurs in a limited location, and most often happens far out at sea. Rogue waves are considered rare but potentially very dangerous, since they can involve the spontaneous formation of massive waves far beyond the usual expectations of ship designers, and can overwhelm the usual capabilities of ocean-going vessels which are not designed for such encounters. Rogue waves are, therefore distinct from tsunamis.
While Chub enjoys the praise, his walkup flat and New York life in general, he simply isn't writing. He is distracted by illness, and the return of B.J. Peacock into his life, now divorced with a young daughter Jesse, and aware that she inspired Chub's first story. They fall in love, marry and Chub is blissfully happy as both husband and father. However, B.J.'s jealousy extends to his relationship with Jesse, and during a Hawaii trip designed to recapture their happiness, Jesse is drowned by a rogue wave while in Chub's care, which leads to divorce, and a long, dark period for Chub.
Many disappearances occurred before wireless telegraphy became available in navigation applications in the late 1890s, which would have allowed crew to send a distress call. Sudden disasters such as military strike, collision, rogue wave, or piracy could also prevent a crew from sending a distress call and reporting a location. Among the many missing ships on the list are submarines, which have limited communication, and provide the crew almost no chance of survival if struck by disaster under water. The advancement of radar technology by the end of World War II and today's Global Positioning System make it more likely that a distressed vessel will be located.
As he and Pete laugh, Dr. Terminus makes one more effort to harpoon him, but his leg is caught in the rope and he is sent catapulting through the ceiling and screams as he goes through it, ending up dangling upside down near a utility pole. In a last-ditch effort, he tries to offer buying Elliott's "spare parts"; Elliott declines and proceeds to destroy Dr. Terminus' traveling wagon, ending his scamming business. Elliott then saves the Mayor, Miss Taylor, and the members of the Town Board from a falling utility pole, revealing himself to them. Back at the lighthouse, the lamp has been extinguished by a storm-driven rogue wave.
Rogue Wave is featured on the Stubbs: The Zombie Soundtrack performing a cover of Buddy Holly's "'Everyday'". Their cover of Buddy Holly's "Everyday" was also plagiarized for a television commercial for the movie Rachel Getting Married. A live version of their Out of the Shadow track, "Every Moment", appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Napoleon Dynamite, but not in the movie itself. The song "Eyes" was featured in the movie Just Friends, the sixteenth episode of season two of 90210, the pilot of television series Heroes, and a 2010 commercial for LG Rogue Wave's songs have also appeared in episodes of Heroes, Friday Night Lights, Scrubs and Chuck.
Labour MP Chris Matheson, who has represented the City of Chester constituency since the 2015 election, believes Coriam was a crime victim, possibly murdered or sexually assaulted. "The more you look into this the more it smells rotten; the more it smells like a crime has taken place", he told the Echo the year of his election. He claims to have a copy of the original police report with "compelling" evidence to that effect. John Anderson, a private investigator who has worked with both the Coriams and Matheson, says records show the seas around the Wonder were normal that night, casting doubt on Disney's "rogue wave" claim.
On the single's release, Smash Hits described it as "attractive left field pop" that had "sparse guitaring reminiscent of early Cure and plenty of deadpan melodic bite". The single was reissued as a limited edition 7" single on 4 December 2006 on the same label and with the same catalogue number, KOW 1, and reached number 177 on the UK Singles Chart. A promo 7" version was also released by Korova in January 1983. The song was covered by the Scottish rock group Idlewild on the b-side of their 2000 single "These Wooden Ideas," and by the American band Rogue Wave on the 2016 album of 80s covers, Cover Me.
Anecdotal evidence from mariners' testimonies and damages inflicted on ships have long suggested rogue waves occurred; however, their scientific measurement was positively confirmed only following measurements of the "Draupner wave", a rogue wave at the Draupner platform, in the North Sea on 1 January 1995. During this event, minor damage was inflicted on the platform, confirming that the reading was valid. In modern oceanography, rogue waves are defined not as the biggest possible waves at sea, but instead as extreme sized waves for a given sea state. Many of these encounters are only reported in the media, and are not examples of open ocean rogue waves.
Ken Christianson is an American musician and artist living in Los Angeles, California, U.S, and co-founder of Père Music. He is the composer of the score to the short film Better Left Alone (2005), resident composer for the Samantha Giron Dance Project, bass player for the Los Angeles funk-jam band The Three Trees, violinist for The Jimmy Lifton Group, and former keyboard player for the indie rock band, Rogue Wave. Ken earned his BFA in Sculpture from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and his MFA in Music Composition from CalArts. Christianson also completed portions of his undergraduate studies at Carleton College and Parsons Paris.
The rowboat proved very capable in rough seas and was only capsized once in crossing three oceans. On 20 December 2007 in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a large rogue wave tipped the boat about 120 to 150 degrees in the estimation of Eruç. The wave hit while he was asleep in the cabin and threw him to the ceiling and then back to the floor as the boat righted itself due to its ballast. The only losses of any value from the open deck were energy gels and fluid replacement packets, with all other valuables being either tied down or stowed securely.
Rogue waves present considerable danger for several reasons: they are rare, are unpredictable, may appear suddenly or without warning, and can impact with tremendous force. A wave in the usual "linear" wave model would have a breaking pressure of . Although modern ships are designed to tolerate a breaking wave of , a rogue wave can dwarf both of these figures with a breaking pressure of . In oceanography, rogue waves are more precisely defined as waves whose height is more than twice the significant wave height (Hs or SWH), which is itself defined as the mean of the largest third of waves in a wave record.
Recent research has focused on optical rogue waves which facilitate the study of the phenomenon in the laboratory. A 2015 paper studied the wave behavior around a rogue wave, including optical, and the Draupner wave, and concluded that "rogue events do not necessarily appear without a warning, but are often preceded by a short phase of relative order".Predictability of Rogue Events, Simon Birkholz, Carsten Brée, Ayhan Demircan, and Günter Steinmeyer, Physical Review Letters 114, 213901, 28 May 2015 A 2012 study confirmed the existence of oceanic rogue holes, the inverse of rogue waves, where the depth of the hole can reach more than twice the significant wave height.
The RMS Poseidon, a luxury ocean liner, is making a transatlantic crossing. Former New York City Mayor and firefighter Robert Ramsey (Kurt Russell) is traveling with his daughter Jennifer (Emmy Rossum) and her boyfriend Christian (Mike Vogel) to New York, soon to be engaged. Also on board is former Navy submariner-turned-professional gambler Dylan Johns (Josh Lucas), architect Richard Nelson (Richard Dreyfuss), Maggie James (Jacinda Barrett) and her son Conor (Jimmy Bennett), stowaway Elena (Mía Maestro), and waiter Marco Valentin (Freddy Rodriguez). As the passengers are enjoying a New Year's Eve party, officers on the bridge see a huge rogue wave bearing down on the ship.
Puckett has written and produced for artists including Rogue Wave, The Mowgli's, Jeremy Jordan (actor, born 1984), Kris Allen, Abraham Mateo, Shawn Hook, Royal Tongues, Glen Phillips, Jessica Mitchell (Canadian Idol (season 2)), Clementine and The Galaxy, Danny Fingers, Ryan Innes (The Voice (U.S. season 4)), Mama Casio, BEGINNERS, Nikki Webster, The Unlikely Candidates, Garrison Starr, Adrianne Gonzalez and Kyler England (The Rescues / Universal Republic). Puckett wrote the ASCAP Award Winning theme song "Skyline" for NY MED on ABC as well as "Everything I Want" for the Peabody Award-winning ABC show Boston Med. His musical REBEL GENIUS was a finalist for the 2017 Jonathan Larson Award presented by Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation and American Theater Wing.
With his electronics business failing, he saw a successful adventure, and the attendant publicity, as the solution to his financial troublesessentially the mirror opposite of Moitessier, who saw publicity and financial rewards as inimical to his adventure. Crowhurst planned to sail in a trimaran. These boats were starting to gain a reputation, still very much unproven, for speed, along with a darker reputation for unseaworthiness; they were known to be very stable under normal conditions, but extremely difficult to right if knocked over, for example by a rogue wave. Crowhurst planned to tackle the deficiencies of the trimaran with a revolutionary self-righting system, based on an automatically inflated air bag at the masthead.
After an argument with his father, 14-year-old Ikuto Tōhōin runs away from home and out to sea, only for a massive storm to send him adrift and eventually strand him on an uncharted tropical island named . Half-drowned, he is found by a kindhearted but naive girl named Suzu, who (clumsily) resuscitates him and takes him into her care. Soon after, Ikuto learns that Airantou was settled 130 years ago by a group of Japanese that had been shipwrecked during a voyage to Europe. Though their Meiji-era village survived and prospered to modern day, its entire male population was claimed by a rogue wave during a fishing tournament some twelve years before.
In one example, in 1974 Sorcery took both first-to-finish and first on corrected time in the biennial Los Angeles-to-Tahiti Race sponsored by the Transpacific Yacht Club. Sorcery finished the race in 18 days, 11 hours, and 13 minutes even, finishing almost two whole days ahead of the nearest competitor. Socery was rolled by a rogue wave in the North Pacific in 1976 while returning from Japan, and while she was dismasted, she survived with little other damage. On arrival in Victoria, British Columbia she was fitted with a new mast and departed immediately, competing in the Victoria to Maui Yacht Race, where she took third in class, ninth overall.
Smith's blue butterfly was recorded in the scientific literature in the mid-1950s. Rudi Mattoni collected the first specimen of Smith's blue on a trip to the Big Sur region with his friend Claude I. Smith: that collection occurred in the vicinity of Dolans Creek in the year 1948 when both men were undergraduates at the University of California, Berkeley. Smith was killed in a freak accident, being swept to sea by a rogue wave while fishing from a rock at Half Moon Bay. Only thereafter did Mattoni analyze his specimen carefully, which he knew was previously undocumented; then he proceeded to publish a treatise on Smith's blue as his Ph.D. dissertation.
The band opened for Rilo Kiley on their tour from September to November 2007 and for Rogue Wave in spring 2008, as well as for Yeah Yeah YeahsSan Diego News Network in spring 2009. They were voted "Best Alternative" band in the 2007 San Diego Music Awards.San Diego Music Awards In the January 2008 issue of San Diego Magazine they were chosen as one of the "50 People to Watch in 2008" San Diego Magazine On 2009, Grand Ole Party was rumored to have broken up,Grand Ole Party: Is GOP really DOA? which they did.. Kristin Gundred now performs as "Dee Dee" in the Sub Pop-signed band Dum Dum Girls.
He has participated at Zend in its corporate financing and has also led alliances with vendors like Adobe, IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle. Gutmans served on the board of the Eclipse Foundation (October 2005 - October 2008), is an emeritus member of the Apache Software Foundation, and was nominated for the FSF Award for the Advancement of Free Software in 1999. In 2004 he wrote a book called "PHP 5 Power Programming" together with Stig Bakken and Derick Rethans. Gutmans was recognized by ComputerWorld magazine in July 2007 in their article “40 Under 40: 40 Innovative IT People to Watch, Under the Age of 40.” In March 2016, Gutmans left Rogue Wave to join Amazon Web Services.
Comparing the album to artists as diverse as Beck, Willie Nelson, and Rogue Wave, Pitchfork stated, "their sophomore effort shouldn't be dismissed as fluff -- Field Rexx is an earnest crack at bluegrass, country, and folk that's young and brazen enough to incorporate elements from multiple genres." Blitzen Trapper struggled with their follow-up to Field Rexx. Eric Earley recorded a new album, simply titled Trapper, on a two-track reel-to-reel in his bedroom; like the Garmonbozia records, Trapper was not released. As a band, Blitzen Trapper recorded a full album of tracks titled Waking Bullets at Breakneck Speed (alternately titled BT3 and All Saints at various stages of its production).
The usual method of preparing for bad weather involved hanging-off the drill pipe at the sub-sea wellhead and disconnecting the riser from the sub-sea blowout preventer. Due to surface difficulties and the speed at which the storm developed, the crew of Ocean Ranger were forced to shear the drill pipe after hanging-off, after which they disconnected the riser in the early evening. At about 19:00 local time, the nearby Sedco 706 experienced a large rogue wave which damaged some items on deck and caused the loss of a life raft. Soon after, radio transmissions were heard from Ocean Ranger, describing a broken portlight (a porthole window) and water in the ballast control room, with discussions on how best to repair the damage.
Despite the erection of a massive storm wall to protect the lighthouses, one of the lighthouses was destroyed by the severe storms and its remains still litter the ground it used to stand on. Although the lighthouse sites sit almost above the high water mark, during a severe storm on 17 January 1836, a rock was thrown up the cliffs and smashed the glass in a window high up in the tower building. On 11 March 1861 at midday the light room of the East tower was struck by a rogue wave, smashing 23 panes, washing some of the lamps down the stairs, and damaging the reflectors with broken glass beyond repair. The light was restored the following night with a reduced number of lamps and reflectors.
Close-up of the event, taken from Paul Taylor's paper. The Draupner wave or New Year's wave was the first rogue wave to be detected by a measuring instrument, occurring at the Draupner platform in the North Sea off the coast of Norway on 1 January 1995. In an area with significant wave height of approximately , a freak wave with a maximum wave height of occurred (peak elevation above still water level was ). Prior to that measurement, no instrument-recorded evidence for rogue waves existed – only anecdotal evidence provided by those who had encountered them at sea, although ships such as the British weather ship Weather Reporter had recorded very large waves that did not differ quite enough from their neighbors to be considered rogue.
In November 1997 the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted new rules covering survivability and structural requirements for bulk carriers of and upwards. The bulkhead and double bottom must be strong enough to allow the ship to survive flooding in hold one unless loading is restricted. It is now widely held that rogue waves present considerable danger for several reasons: they are rare, unpredictable, may appear suddenly or without warning, and can impact with tremendous force. A wave in the usual "linear" model would have a breaking force of . Although modern ships are designed to (typically) tolerate a breaking wave of 15 t/m2, a rogue wave can dwarf both of these figures with a breaking force far exceeding 100 t/m2.
Extreme phenomena have been observed in single-shot studies of the temporal dynamics of optical beam filamentation in air and the two-dimensional transverse profiles of beams forming multiple filaments in a nonlinear Xenon cell. In the former studies, spectral analysis of self-guided optical filaments, which were generated with pulses close to the critical power for filamentation in air, showed that the shot-to-shot statistics become heavy-tailed at the short wavelength and long wavelength edges of the spectrum. Termed optical rogue wave statistics, this behavior was studied in simulations, which supported an explanation based on pump noise transfer by self-phase modulation. In the latter experimental study, filaments of extreme intensity described as optical rogue waves were observed to emerge due to mergers between filament strings when multiple filaments are generated.
Located deep inside the jungle is the Black Rock, a sailing ship from the mid-19th century. In "Ab Aeterno", the Black Rock set sail in 1867 and was captained by Magnus Hanso and had Richard Alpert, full name being Ricardo and last name being unknown, as a prisoner. Jacob, the protector of the island, does not deny when asked by his fraternal twin brother if he brought the ship to the island, as the two watch it approaching. Eventually, it is swept inland by a colossal rogue wave, destroying all but one foot of the coastal statue of Taweret on its way, but a mystery remains as to how the Black Rock had landed on almost the other side of the Island from where the statue of Taweret was.
Born in Grimsby, England to a family of fishermen, Hills grew up sailing the bleak and turbulent North Sea. In 1940 he enrolled as a cadet in nautical school and joined the British Merchant Navy during World War II. At sea, Hills had several life and death experiences that formed his views on karma, divinity and destiny. On one occasion a rogue wave swept him off the deck hundreds of yards (metres) away from the vessel, but another wave picked him up and threw him back onto the ship,The Movie of Life – Early Morning Meditations series, volume MM3 cutting open his forehead but saving him from freezing to death. As German U-boats sank 2,828 merchant ships, he watched tanker crew colleagues incinerated in the flaming oil-slicked Atlantic.
Il Gato is an indie/baroque/folk band from San Francisco, California. The core ensemble of musicians consists of guitarist/vocalist Daimian Holiday Scott, bassist/vocalist Andrew Thomas and drummer/vocalist Johnny Major. Their debut studio album, All these Slippery Things (July, 2010), and follow-up EP from the same sessions, All those Slippery Things (July, 2011) were recorded and mixed at San Francisco studio, Tiny Telephone, engineered by Ian Pelicci (Deerhoof, Rogue Wave, Hauschka, etc.) and mastered by Roger Seibel at SAE Mastering (Broken Social Scene, Death Cab for Cutie, Bon Iver, The Dodos, Cat Power, The Decemberists, Modest Mouse, etc.). Overdubs were recorded in the apartment of bassist, Andrew Thomas. Il Gato’s first release, conversationmusic (2007), was a solo singer/songwriter bedroom recording by lead singer, Daimian Holiday Scott.
In the 2006 film Poseidon, the ship is not a cruise ship, but a British ocean liner registered in Southampton, which is sailing from an unnamed port in the United Kingdom (presumably London as one of the characters mentions it briefly) to New York City. While the first film used Queen Mary as a stand-in for Poseidon, the ship in the 2006 film has an original exterior design not based on any real-life vessel, although the interior was inspired by the modern ocean liner RMS Queen Mary 2. The lower part of the hull is loosely based on the Queen Mary 2, but the superstructure is not. This Poseidon is also struck by a huge wave just after midnight on New Year's Eve and capsizes, but unlike the original, the wave is not a tsunami caused by an undersea earthquake or landslide but a rogue wave.
In 2010 Christianson joined indie rock band Rogue Wave for their North American tour promoting their fourth full-length album, Permalight, playing synthesizers and violin, and singing backup vocals. Christianson finished a tour at the end of August 2008 with the Samantha Giron Dance Project, with performances at the new Santa Fe Complex in Santa Fe, NM, the 2008 Boulder Fringe Festival in Colorado, as well as the 2008 Celebrate Dance Festival in San Diego, California. His compositions for the tour included pre-recorded music as well as live electronic and acoustic performance. Christianson again composed and arranged music in collaboration with the Samantha Giron Dance Project for eight performances at the Unknown Theater in Los Angeles in April 2009 with a piece entitled Mongrels, a multi-form modern dance performance capturing the spirit of the underground dance community synthesizing classical violin-driven music with club and modern dance.
However, what caught the attention of the scientific community was the digital measurement of a rogue wave at the Draupner platform in the North Sea on January 1, 1995; called the "Draupner wave," it had a recorded maximum wave height of and peak elevation of . During that event, minor damage was inflicted on the platform far above sea level, confirming the validity of the reading made by a down-pointing laser sensor. Their existence has also since been confirmed by video and photographs, satellite imagery, radar of the ocean surface, stereo wave imaging systems, pressure transducers on the sea-floor, and oceanographic research vessels. In February 2000, a British oceanographic research vessel, the RRS Discovery, sailing in the Rockall Trough west of Scotland encountered the largest waves ever recorded by scientific instruments in the open ocean, with a SWH of and individual waves up to .
In this film, Finley combines footage of a wrecked sailboat with an original sound score developed and voiced by media artist Pamela Z. The film tells of the rogue wave that hit the sailboat, and includes an interview from one of the fathers piloting the boat before the accident. He testifies to the power of the documentary footage, which helped him move away from guilt, and towards the acceptance of the death of his friend’s son, an incident beyond his control. The use of language as a weapon or tool of resistance has been a focus of a number of Finley's films, as seen in Involuntary Conversion, 1991., Language Lessons, 2002, and Book Report, 2017 Several projects, such as Journeys Beyond the Cosmodrome, 2017, Falsework, 2015, and Threshold, 2012, use public and participatory singing to harness the fissures between the physicality of Finley's subjects and their often disembodied voices, a result of her often utilized format of the voice-over.
No record of any seismic event in the Caribbean on 29 August 1916 that could have triggered a tsunami has been found, and the rate of advance of the large wave Castine and Memphis reported—about an hour to cross the distance from the horizon to the ships—matches that of a wind-generated ocean wave (possibly a rogue wave); a tsunami, in contrast, would have covered the distance in only a few minutes. The periods of the three large waves that struck Castine and Memphis also are characteristic of large wind-generated waves rather than tsunamis. For a discussion of the lack of evidence for a tsunami and the more compelling evidence for freak wind-generated waves having wrecked Memphis, see Smith, pp. 68–69. A likely source for such large, wind-generated waves in Santo Domingo Harbor on 29 August 1916 does exist, in that three hurricanes active in the Caribbean between 12 August and 2 September 1916, (the first struck Corpus Christi, Texas, on 18 August 1916) passed westward just to the south.
Crowhurst's last log entry was on 1 July 1969; it is assumed that he then either fell or jumped overboard and drowned. The state of the boat gave no indication that it had been overrun by a rogue wave, or that any accident had occurred which might have caused Crowhurst to fall overboard. From his apparent state of mind as indicated by his most recent logbook entries and philosophical statements, it seems likely that he deliberately decided to take his own life, possibly in an effort to become a "second generation cosmic being" according to his own delusion (and thereupon have no further need for his earthly body), although the possibility that he met with some sort of accident, intending to return to continue writing in his logbook, cannot be completely dismissed. Three log books (two navigational logs and a radio log) and a large mass of other papers were left on his boat to communicate his philosophical ideas and to reveal his actual navigational course during the voyage.
Judicial proceedings would come to find that the university was guilty of not supervising such events on campus grounds and award the parents of the deceased student 90,000 euros. Two suspects were arraigned as defendants but in 2004 the case would be closed due to insufficient evidence to proceed any further. On the night of 15 December 2013, six members of an academic troupe of the Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias would drown after being caught by a rogue wave on the Meco beach with the sole survivor, João Gouveia, Dux Veteranorum of the Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias of Lisbon alleging temporary amnesia regarding the events, over allegations of the students having been caught by the wave while performing a ritual related to praxe and academic tradition João Gouveia would go on to be judged as to whether he was guilty of reckless endangerment. On 23 April 2014, during an in praxe course face off between Informatics Engineering students and Medicine students at Gualtar Campus, part of Universidade do Minho, vetern students ordered four freshmen of Informatics Engineering to climb a 4 meter wide by one and a half meter tall concrete wall.
