Rocketman has been described as a fantasy musical — even this teaser touts that the story is "Based on a true fantasy" — so it's less a dry re-telling of the artist's life, and more a musically-driven dramatization of true events, jazzed up for a moviegoing audience.
Where Bohemian Rhapsody takes its story beats from Mercury's life — albeit with some dismaying alterations — to paint a straightforward portrait of the artist, Rocketman does away with the cinematic conventions of a more typical biopic, forgoing restaged, famous performances to instead reimagine and recontextualize John's catalog.

Though the trailers for the film make it clear that Rocketman is much more fantastical than your typical biography (we're pretty sure that Elton John has never literally floated off the stage while performing), but there are plenty of real-life people who made it to the big screen.
It was eerie to hear the familiar tones of Elton John—the long and winding vowels, the dying falls, the salty Englishness pepped up with a transatlantic twang—emerge from someone else's mouth, and there are times, during "Rocketman," when you yearn for a snatch of that unmistakable sound.
Check. They even share a fondness for baseball parks as suitable arenas for their skills; "Rocketman" re-creates Elton's triumphant appearance at Dodger Stadium, in 1975, while "Godzilla: King of the Monsters," a new addition to the franchise, shows the title character slugging a rival predator at Fenway Park.
But "Rocketman" is more given to flights of fancy than "Bohemian Rhapsody": When Egerton sings the title track, for example, the song begins at the bottom of a pool as John duets with his childhood self, then culminates with John blasting into space and exploding in a firework.
These dreamy touches also help set Rocketman apart from Bohemian Rhapsody, which it otherwise seems to follow beat for beat, down to the obligatory scene of a foolish record executive who just can't seem to understand that what his oddball artist has brought him is actually the next great masterpiece.
ROCKETMAN Dexter Fletcher, who stepped in to finish filming "Bohemian Rhapsody" after Bryan Singer was fired (and yes, The Washington Post reported, Fletcher was responsible for the scene derided for its terrible editing), now directs a musical biopic he can fully call his own, with Taron Egerton as Elton John.
That said, "Rocketman" star Egerton has campaigned much more extensively than his reticent competitors, and though he's hindered by the fact that his performance as Elton John comes in the shadow of Rami Malek's Globe-winning "Bohemian Rhapsody" turn just last year, I can't underestimate Egerton's willingness to press the flesh.
He's the one who took a show like The Apprentice and made it spectacle TV.  He's the one who saved the dying sports wrestling industry and made it profitable again  — and while he was there, found that naming opponents essentialized them into perceptually defeatable characters (Little Mario, 'Low-Energy' Jeb Bush, Rocketman, Pocahontas…).
Taron Egerton, "Rocketman"Eddie Murphy, "Dolemite is My Name"Daniel Craig, "Knives Out"Roman Griffin Davis, "Jojo Rabbit"Leonardo DiCaprio, "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood"Who will win: Eddie Murphy, "Dolemite Is my Name"I think this one is a toss up between Murphy and DiCaprio, but today I'm going with Murphy.
Snubs this year include Jennifer Lopez, who was expected to get a supporting actress nomination, Taron Egerton, who won the Golden Globe for his portrayal of Elton John in "Rocketman," Beyonce Knowles-Carter in the best song category, "Little Women" director Greta Gerwig, as well as "Uncut Gems," which did not receive any nominations.
Christian Bale, "Ford v Ferrari" Leonardo DiCaprio, "Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood" Adam Driver, "Marriage Story" Taron Egerton, "Rocketman" Joaquin Phoenix, "Joker" Though "The Irishman" is a strong awards contender, it's notable that star Robert De Niro keeps missing out on a best-actor nomination: First the Golden Globes overlooked him, and now SAG.
Although "Rocketman" (which can thank Donald Trump's Kim Jong Un nickname for extra promotion) will evoke inevitable comparisons to "Bohemian Rhapsody" -- basically charting the rise to fame, coming to grips with being gay in the 1970s, and rock-star-sized problems -- it's a very different construct, and not merely because it leans more unflinchingly into that material.
John is also invested in the Rocketman cast, so much so that he recorded a duet with the movie version of himself, Taron Egerton — called "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" — and befriended both Egerton and the actor who plays his former manager/lover John Reid, Game of Thrones and Bodyguard star Richard Madden, in the process.
So while they've probably watched the favorites by now — Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Irishman and Marriage Story and Parasite — a Golden Globes win for an underdog like The Farewell or Rocketman might push a voter to give the film or performance another look in what little time remains before they must submit their ballot.
" It must also be noted that the best-actor category is unusually stacked with contenders this year, from big names like Robert De Niro in "The Irishman," Leonardo DiCaprio in "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood" and Eddie Murphy in "Dolemite Is My Name," to a long list of potential spoilers like Antonio Banderas for "Pain and Glory" and Taron Egerton for "Rocketman.
Still, "An American Saga" is really just a more expansive rendition of a formula that has been much in evidence over the last few years -- following "Bohemian Rhapsody," the box-office mega-hit produced with the blessing of surviving Queen band members Brian May and Roger Taylor; and "Rocketman," a more ambitious musical chronicle of Elton John's life, which the singer produced and helped promote.
