Just a few months after LIGO's landmark detection, the European Space Agency (ESA) launched LISA Pathfinder, a spacecraft designed to roadtest the technologies needed to build an epic gravitational wave observatory that would trail Earth in its orbit around the Sun.

For four years a series of 'live' shows were played in the Spring ahead of the recording of the televised series. These shows were used to roadtest new event concepts and new Gladiators.

When The Computer Channel was relaunched as .tv in 1998, other shows began to start covering the gaming scene. These included Gear, Roadtest, ExMachina and also Games Republic. The latter show was closest in style and tone to Gamesmaster, featured a themed studio set, studio challenges and the irreverent presenters Trevor and Simon.

The Bridgestone 350 GTR was a standard motorcycle built by Bridgestone from 1967 until 1971. It had an air-cooled two-stroke Straight-twin engine, which produced at 7,500 rpm, and could hit a claimed top speed of . A roadtest article in Motorcycle Mechanics magazine dated April 1968Bounding Bridgestone, Motorcycle Mechanics, April 1968, pp40-42 puts the top speed as 108 mph and the average mpg as 65. Standing start 1/4 mile was 91mph in 15 seconds.

After a chance meeting with Johnny Marr in Portland, OR, the band invited the guitarist to join as a touring member in February 2008, with the prospect of recording together proposed for the future. The remainder of year found the band writing new material in Portland, OR, Manchester and Wakefield, with a short UK tour that took place at the ABC, Glasgow, the Manchester Ritz for two nights, St. George's Hall, Bradford and Heaven, London used to roadtest some of the new songs before recording commenced.

One of the events, Tilt, would be used in the televised series with little modification. Joust was also roadtested in this series with pugil sticks being used but the sybikes were much larger and lower to the ground than the events ultimate appearance in the televised series. A third new event taken from the American series, Breakthrough And Conquer, was also roadtested but would not be taken forward.
