This chill zone may represent a chill zone which infers an intrusive origin for the ultramafic, or it may represent a zone of metasomatism and/or contamination. The orebody itself is composed of 2 to 6 metres of massive nickeliferous sulfides, usually banded and foliated pentlandite-pyrrhotite-pyrite. Dodecahedral pyrite crystals to 20 cm are formed within the massive sulfide zones. The massive zone is overlain by a matrix ore zone composed of the above sulfide assemblage and coarse jackstraw textured bladed olivine, now retrogressed to black serpentinite.

The Rhinns complex has been recognised in a series of four outcrops that form inliers within younger cover sequences of the Dalradian Supergroup and the Colonsay Group. The most easterly of these exposures is on the islands of Colonsay, where the complex consists of strongly retrogressed orthogneisses, although the correlation of this outcrop with the Rhinns complex has been questioned on the basis of new radiometric dating and Hf isotope analyses. On the Rhinns of Islay, gneisses of the Rhinns complex lie unconformably beneath the Colonsay Group, which is correlated with the Dalradian Supergroup. The gneisses on Islay consist of two main types, a dominant medium to coarse-grained syenitic gneiss, which is cut by large intrusions of gabbro (now deformed).

In a five-star review, Down Beat journalist Michael Goldberg said the Clash had produced "a classic rock album which, literally, defines the state of rock and roll and against which the very best of [the 1980s] will have to be judged." Some reviewers expressed reservations, including DJ and critic Charlie Gillett, who believed some of the songs sounded like poor imitations of Bob Dylan backed by a horn section. Garry Bushell was more critical in his review for Sounds, giving the record two out of five stars while claiming the Clash had "retrogressed" to Rolling Stones-style "outlaw imagery" and "tired old rock clichés".
