D. proteus is known from the late Paleocene and earliest Eocene of Wyoming and the only species present in the Tiffanian and Clarkforkian stages (60–55 Ma). It is slightly larger than D. leptornylus and slightly smaller than D. protenus. named a new subspecies, Didymictis protenus proteus, which reranked as the species D. proteus. described Didymictis dellensis which included in Protictis dellensis.

Within this subfamily is the tribe Giganotosaurini. This tribe was originally its own subfamily, Giganotosaurinae, which was erected by Rodolfo Coria and Philip J. Currie in 2006. In order to keep this clade within the subfamily Carcharodontosaurinae, Brusatte and Sereno renamed and reranked it as a tribe. Giganotosaurini is defined as all carcharodontosaurines that are closer to Giganotosaurus than to Carcharodontosaurus.

The Lituitida are the Lituitidae of the Treatise (Furnish & Glenister,1964), reranked as an order and combined with other orthoceratoids. They are considered to be more closely related to the Orthocerida than to the Ascocerida or Pseudorthocerida which are also included. Lituitids are characterized by smooth to annulate shells in which the juvenile portion near the apex is coiled or cyrtoconic. The adult portion is straight or slightly sigmoidal and may be expanded.

The type genus, Barbourofelis, was originally described by Schultz et al. (1970) and assigned to a new tribe, Barbourofelini, within the felid subfamily Machairodontinae, along with the other sabre-toothed cats. Subsequently, the tribe was reassigned to the Nimravidae by Tedford (1978) and raised subfamily by Bryant (1991). However, a number of studies in the early 2000s identified a closer affinity of the barbourofelines to the Felidae than to the Nimravidae and they were reranked as a distinct family by Morlo et al.
