In the "Six-Year Plan for People's Economic Development" that started in 1971, Kim Il-sung, under the slogan "자력 갱생" (Charyŏk Kaengsaeng, "Self-Reliance"), declared that everything - economy, scientific advance, and development of industrial technology - should be made entirely domestically. Though a considerable amount was achieved through domestic effort, a fair amount of the advances that were made came from foreign sources and were simply relabelled as North Korean. On 14 February 2013, the French government stated that French meat processing company À la Table de Spanghero knowingly sold horse meat labelled as beef, and that their licence was suspended while an inquiry took place. Spanghero imported meat from Romania and sold it on to another French company, Comigel, which made frozen ready meals at its factory in Luxembourg. French Consumer Affairs Minister Benoît Hamon said the meat had left Romania clearly and correctly labelled as horse and that it was afterwards that it was relabelled as beef by Spanghero. The investigation also said some blame may rest with Comigel, claiming the staff there should have noticed anomalies in the paperwork, and realised from the smell and look of the meat once it was defrosted that it was not beef.

On 31 May 2016, the channel launched on Freeview, broadcasting via COM7 which is available to around 75% of the UK.Keep It Country makes Freeview debut From 26 January 2017 to 1 February 2017, Keep It Country was temporarily removed from Sky channel 389. On 1 May 2018, following another EPG reshuffle, Keep It Country moved from Sky channel 389 to 376. On 21 January 2019, the channel changed Freeview multiplex and increased its reach from 75% of the UK to 90%Keep It Country announces Freeview expansion but it was removed from the platform in June 2019.
