At the end of the Sui dynasty, the rebel ruler Li Mi conquered Zhang's home region, and Zhang followed him. Initially, he was not regarded highly by Li Mi, but after he revealed a treasonous plot to Li Mi, Li Mi believed him to be faithful, and so made him a general and had him serve under the general Xu Shiji. In 618, Li Mi was defeated by the Sui general Wang Shichong, and he fled to Tang territory and surrendered to the Tang Empire. The parts of the territory formerly under Li Mi's control was still under Xu's control, and Xu, because Li Mi had already submitted to Tang, decided to submit to Tang as well — a decision that Zhang supported.

Also during his youth, Sun passed the imperial examinations in the Jinshi class. (It is unclear whether this was in the late Tang Dynasty or early in its successor state Later Liang.) At that time, however, the intelligentsia at then-capital Luoyang favored men who paid attention to details and appearance, and Sun did not pay attention to such things, and therefore was not regarded highly. He thus left the capital scene and journeyed to Mount Lu to become a Taoist monk at Jianji Temple (). However, his custom of hanging up a portrait of the Tang poet Jia Dao and offering sacrifices to the portrait caused fellow monks to believe that he was a sorcerer, and they chased him out of the temple.

Macarius is a saint in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. In the Methodist Churches, Macarius is regarded highly for writing on the topic of entire sanctification. Macarius of Egypt founded a monastery that bears his name, the Monastery of Saint Macarius the Great, which has been continuously inhabited by monks since its foundation in the fourth century. St. Macarius’ face used to be enlightened with grace in an amazing way to the extent that many fathers testified that his face used to glow in the dark; and thus appeared his name as “the glowing lantern.” This description was transferred to his monastery, and thus it was called “the glowing lantern of the wilderness” or “the glowing monastery,” which meant the place of high wisdom and constant prayer.

Essentially, what makes the film fascinating is the theme of children growing up and their contact with a world of adults (the pirates) who act as if they are grown-up children.

Leahy, who Geelong had regarded highly enough to call him "a second Jack Dyer", was signed by South Melbourne in 1942, on loan from Geelong, which were sitting out of the competition due to the war. He was unable to play for South Melbourne at that time as the hours he worked at a munitions factory wouldn't allow for training, but he appeared in 11 games for the club in 1943. When Geelong returned to the league in 1944, South Melbourne were forced to return Leahy to Geelong, although he was reluctant to play for the club again, due to past differences and the fact that he had just bought a house in Kew. An agreement was reached that Leahy could train in Footscray, so he spent the 1944 season with Geelong and played 15 league games.
