(Portpatrick had been reduced in importance in favour of Stranraer as the port for the north of Ireland.) The Bill was passed by Parliament and became the Portpatrick Railway Act (No. 1) on 29 July 1864, and the working arrangement with the CR took effect on 4 December 1864.

Tel Miqne-Ekron (Khirbat al- Muqanna') is one of the largest Iron Age (12th century - 586 BC) sites in Israel. Archaeologists have discovered over 100 7th-century BC oil presses there, as well as the Ekron Inscription from that same century, which identifies the site as Philistine Ekron. The tell shows signs of occupation in the Chalcolithic period (4500–3100 BC) and throughout the Bronze Age (3100–1200 BC), but only becomes an important city in the 12th century BC with the arrival of the Philistines, one of the Sea Peoples. Once the Kingdom of Judah managed to take over the dominant position from the Philistines in the 10th century BC, Ekron was reduced in importance and size (from 10 acres to 5 acres, with the abandonment of the Lower City).

Although the Soviet Union poured resources into building up the Northern Fleet and the Pacific Fleet, both of which had easy access to the open ocean, the Twice Red-Banner Baltic Fleet assumed the very important position of supporting the northern flank of the European Theatre in case of a confrontation with NATO. This role was under-rated from the blue water navies perspective, but was seen as a highly valuable one from the strategic perspective of the Soviet General Staff planning. The Twice Red- Banner Baltic Fleet remained a powerful force, which in the event of war was tasked with conducting amphibious assaults against the coast of Denmark and Germany, in cooperation with allied Polish and East German naval forces.
