The very fact of extreme inequality threatens what political philosopher John Rawls calls "the fair value of the political liberties:" the idea that political freedoms like freedom of speech and association should be available to all citizens in roughly equal fashion, that everyone should be able to have a reasonable chance for their voices in democratic political deliberation.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote on this blog that "politics has broken out in Germany" after a relatively depoliticised period in the country's post-war history: a more fragmented Bundestag should prove a more vibrant one; the grand coalition deal commits its signatories to more open disagreement and debate; a minority government would generate even more of that; Andrea Nahles, the SPD's pugilistic incoming leader, stands a reasonable chance of putting the fight back into Germany's struggling left.

Whether you believe that the aliens are likely to be warriors or Zen masters, if you think that METI has a reasonable chance of making contact with another intelligent organism somewhere in the Milky Way, then you have to accept that this small group of astronomers and science-fiction authors and billionaire patrons debating semi-prime numbers and the ubiquity of visual intelligence may in fact be wrestling with a decision that could prove to be the most transformative one in the history of human civilization.

AT THE SAME POINT WITH ECONOMIC ACTIVITY ACTUALLY IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE I THINK THERE'S A REASONABLE CHANCE IT CAN CONTINUE FOR SOME PERIOD OF TIME THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT COULD KNOCK IT OFF BUT THERE'S NO QUESTION THAT WE HAVE PRETTY GOOD VISIBILITY ON STRONG CORPORATE EARNINGS HEADING INTO 2019 ALSO SOME CONTINUING TECHNICALS THAT I THINK CAN SUPPORT THE MARKET IF THE UNDERLYING ECONOMY CONTINUES TO BE STRONGER FROST: I GUESS THE PRESIDENT FEARS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT COULD KNOCK THE ECONOMY OFF THIS PATH IS THE FED AND INTEREST RATES HE SAID I THINK THE FED IS MAKING A MISTAKE THEY'RE SO TIGHT I THINK THE FED HAS GONE CRAZY IS HE RIGHT?
