At Arecibo, the British schooner Robbie Godfrey broke free from its moorings in port while being loaded with sugar. The ship was driven aground and destroyed, along with its cargo, but all hands were able to reach the shore with the assistance of rescue brigades. One crewman was hospitalized for an arm injury.

Once they were in the water it was obvious to all of them that the currents and ocean conditions were going to prevent them from reaching Maui. They realized they were in a life-threatening situation. At this point Billy Mitchell took the long board and headed back to Kaho'olawe to get help. It took him a good part of the day to reach the shore and walk across the island to notify the Navy of the situation and to get the Coast Guard involved in a rescue operation.

Despite earlier setbacks, Young remained committed to completing his intelligence-gathering mission, and on the night of 22/23 April Antrim entered Stromness Bay in order to insert another SAS force. This time, Boat Troop, D squadron, led by Captain Tim Burls, were to be inserted in five Geminis boats. The attempt almost ended in disaster when two boats' engines refused to start and they were swept out to sea by an unexpected gale. One boat was rescued the following morning by Antrims Wessex, while the other managed to restart their engine and reach the shore on the Busen Peninsula.

Reflecting on her loneliness she tries to recite an old song, Issac Watts's Against Idleness and Mischief, but instead ends up reciting a bizarre parody, How Doth the Little Crocodile. After seeing the crocodile from the poem appear, a startled Alice falls into a pool of her own tears, where she meets a mouse who is offended by both cats and dogs. Despite being afraid of Alice's remarks on both subjects the mouse invites her to listen to his history when they reach the shore. On the shore Alice meets several animals who appear quite familiar to her.

Helmholtz pointed out that the sounds of organ pipes must arise from such discontinuity of flow, occasioned by the passage of air past a sharp-edged obstacle; otherwise the oscillatory character of the sound wave would be damped away to nothing.

On 4 February 1899, Malta issued a set of four definitive postage stamps which showed pictorial scenes. This was the first set of Malta stamps which did not feature the portrait of the reigning British monarch (then Queen Victoria). The highest denomination in the set was the 10/-, which depicted the shipwreck of Paul the Apostle on Malta as described in the Acts of the Apostles. The design was adapted from an engraving by the French artist Gustave Doré, which shows St Paul standing on land while other survivors from the shipwreck are in the sea attempting to reach the shore.

On other beaches the commanders realized the danger and brought their DDs much closer inshore before launching allowing them to reach the shore. PC-552 spent the next 45 minutes picking up survivors, but watched many of the soldiers drown in front of them, helpless to do anything about them. Crewmen Ted Guzda described the scene saying, "We were the control vessel for the first wave of the invasion, they all went down, we picked up all the survivors and threw them on deck." Ted Guzda recalled, "Later we had to sink most of [the bodies]," he said.

Ada and Ethel left port on the afternoon of 26 October 1887 under the command of Captain Frederick. They soon found that the ship was taking on water so rapidly that by 19:30 the vessel became unmanageable, and Captain Frederick endeavoured to make for Port Stephens, New South Wales, where he intended to beach her. However, it was soon apparent that Ada and Ethel would not reach the shore, and Captain Frederick and the five members of his crew abandoned ship off Seal Rocks, New South Wales."Foundering of the schooner Ada and Ethel", The Sydney Morning Herald, 29 October 1887.

The water divides of North America By the 1700s, European trade in the Northwest Territories was dominated by two fur-trading companies: the Hudson's Bay Company, based in London, England, and the North West Company based in Montréal. Fur trade explorer Peter Pond lead the way through the Methye Portage into the vast territory of the Northwest where the rivers flowed North rather than East. In 1771, Samuel Hearne was the first European to reach the shore of the Arctic Ocean by an overland route via the Coppermine River. Further west and eighteen years later, in 1789, Alexander Mackenzie reached the Arctic Ocean.

Santiago Tobon Aniquirona: poetry, affluent towards mystery, deity of sounds and language, which can be transmuted into a woman, into magic or into the fire of things, but which will be, essentially, a song of nature. What river to wade, then, to reach the shore, to the transcendent? Travel with the poet through the forests "of winds and honeysuckle" and "very old chestnut trees", join in "the ceremony of flowers" and woo the light "in the breath of the air". Letting "the continuous voice of the rain" hit the road forever and abandon man in "the sap of the trees", in the ancestral shadow of poetry.

The red hand is explained by several legends, with a common theme but of a promise of land to the first man to sail or swim across the sea and touch the shores of Ireland. Many contenders arrive, including a man named O'Neill, who begins to fall behind the others. O'Neill cuts off his left hand and throws it onto the beach before the other challengers can reach the shore, becoming the first to touch land and win all of Ireland as his prize. These legends seem to originate (or to have been written down) in the 17th century, centuries after the red hand device was first used by O'Neill families.

The British ships were largely untouched, but the second French flûte was struck by a large piece of flaming timber, which ignited her mainmast and destroyed her as well. The operations successfully completed, the British ships embarked their landing parties, who had demolished the fortifications around the bay, and returned to open water. In total the British had lost eight killed and 16 wounded on Blonde, six wounded on Thetis, and an uncertain number lost in the amphibious operation, although casualty figures are not known. French losses in the engagement are also uncertain, although most of the crews of Loire and Seine were able to quite easily reach the shore.

Map of D-Day beaches with Utah to the left The first troops to reach the shore were four companies from the 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry, arriving at 06:30 on 20 LCVPs. Companies B and C landed on the segment code- named Tare Green, and Companies E and F to their left on Uncle Red. Leonard T. Schroeder, leading Company F, was the first man to reach the beach. The landing craft were pushed to the south by strong currents, and they found themselves near Exit 2 at Grande Dune, about from their intended landing zones opposite Exit 3 at Les Dunes de Varreville.

To repel the invaders, the inhabitants, hurled rocks (their only defense) from the cliffs at the English privateers attempting to reach the shore. During the battle, one Portuguese soldier, Simão Gote was able to rob the ensign of their flag, and escape with it victoriously. In the 18th century, the French corsair René Duguay-Trouin pillaged the settlements in São Jorge, and in 1816 an Algerian pirate, while attempting to hunt and capture a merchant clipper was shelled by the cannons in the local fort in Calheta. The sheltered cove was elaborated in 1755, and a lighthouse constructed in 1873 to improve navigation and shipping.

The final chapter begins with the men's resolution to abandon the floundering dinghy they have occupied for thirty hours and to swim ashore. As they begin the long swim to the beach, Billie the oiler, the strongest of the four, swims ahead of the others; the captain advances towards the shore while still holding onto the boat, and the cook uses a surviving oar. The correspondent is trapped by a local current, but is eventually able to swim on. After three of the men safely reach the shore and are met by a group of rescuers, they find Billie dead, his body washed up on the beach.

"Global Security""Sino Defense" Because of continuing tension with Taiwan, the PRC felt the need to upgrade its fleet of amphibious tanks as the original Type 63 was rapidly becoming obsolete and incapable of facing modern tanks. To prepare for a possible amphibious assault on Taiwan Island, the PLA requested a new amphibious tank that can be launched from tank landing ships over 10 kilometres offshore and reach the shore at a high swimming speed of 14 kilometres per hour. This improved mobility would reduce the risk to PLA Navy ships from enemy missiles, aircraft, ships, speedboats and mines and increase the survivability of the tank in the amphibious assault stage. The new version was designated Type 63A.

Hawkmoon, Oladahn, and D'Averc reach the shore and find the Warrior in Jet and Gold awaiting them. Once again the Warrior informs Hawkmoon that he is a servant of the Runestaff, and that as well as saving the kidnapped Yisselda he must also recover a Red Amulet – an artefact linked to the Runestaff which bestows power on its servants but madness to others. Hawkmoon, Oladahn, D'Averc, and the Warrior in Jet and Gold head deeper into Ukrania, along the way crossing the mysterious Throbbing Bridge and encountering signs of the Dark Empire's forces. They reach the Mad God's Castle and defeat a group of warrior women, but elsewhere the castle is already filled with corpses.

They managed to put a 1,400 feet long line between the ship and the cliffs allowing all the crew to safely reach the shore as the storm raged. Finally, after several more delays due to storms passing through the area, Chippewa was finally refloated on August 4 and towed to New York for repairs. It took a little over a month to finalize the repairs, and the steamer arrived at Boston on September 28 to resume sailing on her regular route. An inquiry was held into grounding in late September 1908 and both captain Macbeth and second officer Googins were reprimanded for inattentive navigation and failure to use sounding machine and had their licences suspended for 30 days.

Michel Trudeau, third son of Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau and Margaret Trudeau-Kemper and younger brother of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, had been working for about a year at Red Mountain Resort and living in Rossland when on November 13, 1998 during a backcountry skiing trip with some friends in Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park, he was swept into Kokanee Lake by an avalanche and unable to reach the shore and drowned at age 23. In the summer of 2013, a third peak was added, Grey Mountain, adding of terrain and 22 named runs. A new, fixed-grip, Poma quad-chair is intended to be in service for the 2013/14 winter season.

Official map showing the V US Corps objectives for D-Day, Port-en-Bessin is on the eastern flank of Omaha Beach 47 RM commando embarked on transport ships for the invasion on 3 June 1944 and left the Solent in two ships on 5 June. At on 6 June, off the Normandy coast, they were loaded into 14 Landing Craft Assault (LCA), each carrying 30 marines and headed for Gold Beach. Soon the big guns at Le Hamel and at Longues were able to target the approaching LCAs. As a result of this one LCA was hit and sank, twelve marines were killed or drowned, eleven were seriously injured but they were still able to reach the shore.

This angers Bhakta and he destroys the boat, and then buys an old leaky boat from the money he had saved, but, before he can repair it, the owner of the destroyed boat calls the police and they arrive and arrest him. As they leave, his wife Manu sees her husband taken away and decides to follow him on the leaky old boat despite him telling her not to. Suddenly, the boat starts sinking and she jumps into the lake; seeing this, Bhakta jumps in as well to save her but as they reach the shore his wife dies. The film closes as Batase watches his brother Bhakta as he leaves his home with his baby on his back.

Two Friends was carrying around 80 passengers, 40 soldiers, 30 crew and all the baggage and heavy equipment of the 100th Regiment. Early in the morning of 22 October, the ship was driven ashore by high winds and in dense fog on the south coast of Cape Breton Island close to Louisbourg. Two Friends lost her masts and frantic efforts were made to prevent it drifting off into deep water, where it would have sunk with all hands. Some hours after it was wrecked, local people spotted the disaster and made dozens of trips in small boats to the battered ship, managing to rescue all but three of those aboard, who had drowned in an effort to reach the shore some hours before.

All of this changed as part of the Thirlmere reservoir scheme in 1894, when a water race was constructed to carry most of the water into the lake. To the east the fell is also squeezed out at height by its neighbours, failing to reach the shore of Ullswater. Raise has a short eastern ridge, Stang, descending between Sticks Gill (East) and Glenridding Beck, but these streams combine above the site of the old Greenside Mine to leave Sheffield Pike and Birkhouse Moor overlooking Glenridding. To the north of Raise the pedestrian route of Sticks Pass crosses the ridge at a height of 2,445 ft (745 m), this being the highest pass in the District crossed by a regular bridleway.

The time they had spent at Scapa Flow was used getting acquainted with the transport ships and the Landing Craft Assault they would be using to reach the shore. The problems the navy perceived providing gunfire support were also discussed, as the destroyers would not be able to approach closer than to shore owing to the shallows. Because of this, the commandos were trained to rely on their own weapons to provide covering fire and support each other from their landing craft. Plans were also made for them to look after themselves in case the destroyers were called away to deal with a naval threat, which included every man being ordered to take enough rations to last for 48 hours ashore.

Of the in the landing, killed and many of the rest were wounded. River Clyde grounded just before the tows and to connect the collier to the shore, the steam hopper Argyll a flat-bottomed boat, was to beach ahead of it to provide a floating bridge, connecting the gangplanks in the bow of River Clyde to the beach but Argyll swung out to port and ended up broadside to the beach. The captain of River Clyde, Commander Edward Unwin, led men outside to manhandle three lighters (transport boats) on the starboard side forward instead. Two companies of Munsters emerged from the sally ports, covered by the machine- guns on the bow and moved down the gangways to reach the shore but many were hit by bullets.

Following a heavy Luftwaffe air attack on Malta and ships entering Valletta Harbour, Lieutenant Copperwheat (a torpedoes and explosives officer) commanded a squad of men from sent to scuttle a Norwegian merchantman Talabot (survivor of the convoy MG1), which was laden with ammunition and burning in the busy harbour. As the men laid scuttling charges, the fires caused ammunition stored on the deck to explode all around them and prevented the charges being laid in the ships hold. Therefore, the charges had to be draped over the sides of the stricken vessel. The ship lay forty yards from the shore and, as the electric cables required to fire the charges could only just reach the shore, Copperwheat took it upon himself to fire the charges after seeing his men safely to cover.

Approximately twenty men, women, and children were killed; this would be known as the Massacre at Bloody Falls. > ... a young girl, seemingly about eighteen years of age, [was] killed so > near me, that when the first spear was stuck into her side she fell down at > my feet, and twisted round my legs, so that it was with difficulty that I > could disengage myself from her dying grasps. As two Indian men pursued this > unfortunate victim, I solicited very hard for her life; but the murderers > made no reply till they had stuck both their spears through her body ... > even at this hour I cannot reflect on the transactions of that horrid day > without shedding tears. A few days later Hearne was the first European to reach the shore of the Arctic Ocean by an overland route.

Although it is about from the shore of Morecambe Bay, the town of Ulverston was declared to be a port in 1774, which allowed certain goods to be shipped to other canals without the payment of sea duty. Ships of up to 150 tonnes could reach the shore at high water, and 70 vessels were registered there. Trade in slate and ore was growing, and canal mania was gripping the country. A local solicitor, William Burnthwaite. organised a meeting in July 1791 to consider ideas for a canal to improve access to the town. He estimated the cost at £2,000. This sum had been raised by May 1792, but by then the engineer John Rennie had produced proper plans for a ship canal, estimated to cost £3,084, including the construction of a sea lock. By October 1792, around £3,800 had been raised, and the proposers decided to proceed.

When the tide went out, the PLA landing vessels became beached and were unable to return to the mainland to transport the second wave of reinforcements. Although these Communists were initially supported by artillery fire from the mainland, it had to cease firing once the infantry disembarked. Some of the troops, stranded in their vulnerable landing craft still far from shore, had to swim or wade some 650 yards (600 meters) in order to reach the shore, also rendering them without cover and extremely vulnerable to the defenders' fire. The beached PLA vessels were destroyed shortly afterwards by gunfire from two ROC Navy vessels patrolling off the northwest coast of Guningtou, as well as by ROC troops who burned the mostly wooden boats using flamethrowers, grenades, gasoline, and oil. The advancing PLA forces were met by the ROC 18th Army and US-made M5A1 tanks of ROC 1st Bn, 3rd Tank Regiment.

The next year he was senior officer on the coast of Guinea, and, having crossed over to the Leeward Islands, brought home a large convoy in August 1758. The Lichfield was then placed under the orders of Commodore Augustus Keppel, as part of the squadron destined for the capture of Gorée, and sailed with it on 11 November. On the 28th a heavy gale scattered the fleet; at night, the Lichfield by her reckoning was twenty-five leagues from the African shore. At six o'clock on the following morning she struck on the coast near Masagan; it was rocky and rugged; the sea was extremely high, and swept over the wreck, which beat violently, but by good fortune held together till the gale moderated, when those who had not been washed overboard or drowned in premature attempts, managed to reach the shore, distant only about 400 yards; the saved amounted to 220 out of a crew of 350.

In February, he was promoted to captain."Lieutenant Promoted", The Weekly Times [Melbourne], 13 February 1915, p. 31. Training continued until 3 April when they left for Lemnos, and then, on 24 April, departed in readiness for the Gallipoli landing. The engineers were among the first to reach the shore, preparing the area so that the infantry could land, building roads, creating gun emplacements, digging trenches and building ammunition depots. On 7 May, the commander of the 1st Australian Division, Major-General William Bridges, inspected the area near the 'Pimple', a salient at the southern end of the ANZAC lines, and devised a plan to take some of the Turkish trenches there. Bage's orders were to take a small party in support of Major Edmund Drake- Brockman of the 11th Battalion, and, in broad daylight, get to an exposed area about 150 yards beyond the front line and peg out the position of the new trench line so that the infantry could dig in that night.

It is as they hear a lion's roar and a horrorized Tom (who had been enslaved in his youth) finds several implements, that Dick realizes they are in Africa: Dick further learns, from eavesdropping into Harris, that they are in Angola, that Harris is Negoro's partner in crime, and that he was leading the group in to weaken them and make it easier for him to take Tom and the others into slavery. Dick and Tom's group decides to keep the truth from Mrs Weldon and her family, knowing that it will cause undue stress in them: instead, they tell Mrs Weldon that Harris lied to them, and Dick tries to lead the group to a river, which he hopes will allow them to reach the shore. A great storm leads the group to take refuge in a large ant nest, but the nest becomes flooded and the group barely manages to escape alive. This time, though, they encounter a group of slave traders led by Harris, who takes them prisoners: only Hercules and Dingo manage to escape, killing several traders and getting into the thicket to avoid detection.

Despite the Royal Commission, its findings and its various recommendations, losses of 'sixty-milers' and the lives of their crew members continued up to 1956. In 1924, the small wooden 'sixty-miler' Austral (157 tons), laden with coal, foundered off Barrenjoey Head. One life was lost. The survivors rowed for six-hours to reach the shore. Galava, in 1924, run aground at Cannae Point near the North Head Quarantine Station, while carrying coal bound for the nearby Manly Gasworks wharf; her crew managed to refloat her under her own power.Later, in 1927, en route from Catherine Hill Bay, she foundered off Terrigal, due to water entering the holds through hull plates in the bow; seven of her crew died. In April 1927, grave fears were held for the Stockrington, until she arrived in Sydney—her crew safe but in a state of exhaustion—after having taken 40-hours to complete the trip from Newcastle during a violent gale. In 1928, the Malachite—a regular on the Sydney- Newcastle run that had been idle for about five months—was sent to Blackwattle Bay for an overhaul.
