Roman Hackle's dam Wanoya was a great-granddaughter of the Belgian-bred broodmare Muirninn, whose other descendants included leading National Hunt stallion My Prince and the Belmont Stakes winner Amberoid. During his racing career Roman Hackle was trained by Owen Anthony who had been a successful amateur jockey before taking up training: he had won the 1922 Grand National with Music Hall and trained Thrown In to win the Gold Cup in 1927.

Morrison stated that he bred Lotta Kim to Medaglia d'Oro because he was impressed with the stallion's physical presence and compatibility with the mare: According to Morrison, Rachel Alexandra looked "a little raw-boned and a little scruffy" as a foal. Morrison rarely sells the first couple of foals out of his mares, but he almost made an exception with Rachel Alexandra, entering her in the 2006 Keeneland November Sale as a weanling. " Wysocki was also known as a kick-blocker and had three career touchdowns on blocked kicks. In the 1937 Bacardi Bowl, Villanova was trailing Auburn 7–0 in the fourth quarter, when Wysocki and Valentine Rizzo blocked a kick inside the Auburn 15-yard line, and the kick was recovered by a Villanova lineman for a touchdown that led to the final game score of 7–7. Wysocki repeated as an All- American in 1938 despite suffering injuries that prevented him from playing a full schedule. In November 1938, NEA syndicate sports editor Harry Grayson said the following of the two-time All-American: > "John Wysocki is a raw-boned kid who made more All-America teams last year > than did any other end.
