One early beneficiary of Raper's research was Robert FitzRoy, whose second expedition was made famous by the work of his travelling companion, Charles Darwin. Raper is primarily remembered, however, for his seminal work The Practice of Navigation and Nautical Astronomy, for which he was awarded the Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1841.
Sirius, commanded by Captain John Hunter, was the flagship of the First Fleet, which under Commodore Arthur Phillip transported convicts from England to New South Wales in Australia. On 30 September 1787, while the First Fleet was sailing from Rio de Janeiro to Cape Town, George Raper became a midshipman. Raper took his paint box with him, containing a larger set of paints than that of his captain, John Hunter, who was also an artist. Raper's charts, and his paintings of ports such as Tenerife and Rio de Janeiro, were part of his evidence of competence for his promotion to midshipman.
At the end of another successful season in 2000 with the Castleford Tigers, Raper was offered the head coaching role at Super League giants the Wigan Warriors for the 2001 season. His first season in charge at his new club proved to be a fruitful one for Raper as the Warriors finished second on the end of season table and made it all the way to the 2001 Super League Grand Final; although they ended up losing to the Bradford Bulls in a somewhat poor performance for the club's usually high standards. He remained with Wigan for a further two seasons in 2002 and 2003 where they finished a respectable third in both seasons though were never able to progress to the Final and obtain a Super League title in either. Raper did however enjoy his first piece of English rugby league silverware in 2002 when he took his Wigan Warriors side to victory in the Challenge Cup.
Five years later, still in that city, she married again, this time to Lieutenant Charles Fraser. The couple had ten children, three of whom were born after they returned to London. Raper died in Lewisham.Profile at the Dictionary of Pastellists Before 1800.
Raper played three seasons with the Western Suburbs Rosellas in the Newcastle competition from 1970–1972. He captain coached the club and took them to victory in the 1970 grand final. He finished his playing career with Kurri Kurri in 1973–1974.

He did not stand for Parliament again.
The Herero called the place Otjozondjii. The name of the town is derived from the Nama word Tsoakhaub ("excrement opening") describing the Swakop River in flood carrying items in its riverbed, including dead animals, into the Atlantic Ocean. However, Professor Peter Raper, Honorary Professor: Linguistics, at the University of the Free State points out that the name for Swakopmund is based on the San language, specifically from xwaka (rhinoceros) and ob (river).[Dictionary of Southern African Place Names by Dr P.E. Raper] The German settlers changed it to Swachaub, and when in 1896 the district was officially proclaimed, the version Swakopmund (German: Mouth of the Swakop) was introduced.
Raper masterminded the side past Wigan Warriors and local rivals Leeds Rhinos and took the Tigers within 80 minutes of the Grand Final at Old Trafford. They were knocked out in the last knock-out stage by St. Helens. The 1999 season still stands as the most successful for the Castleford Tigers in the Super League era and because of it Raper is still highly regarded in the hearts of the club's fans. 2000 was Raper's last season with the Castleford Tigers and his performance somewhat mirrored their previous season as he yet again took his side to a finishing place of fifth and into the finals for a consecutive season.
A. carneus was first placed in section Terrei, along with Aspergillus terreus and Aspergillus nivea, by Thom and Raper (1945) due to its transparent aleurioconidia. In 1965, A. carneus was reclassified to Aspergillus section Flavipedes, along with A. flavipes and A. nivea, by Raper and Fennell because its conidial heads were less columnar than those of A. terreus and its unique thick-walled, yellow hyphae. This taxonomic debate was addressed using modern molecular genetic techniques as they became available. In 2000, sequencing of the D1/D2 region of the 28S ribosomal RNA gene indicated that Thom and Raper's original classification (1945) of A. carneus in Aspergillus section Terrei was likely correct.
On 19 March, Sirius was wrecked while landing supplies at Norfolk Island. All the ship's company were saved and many of the supplies were salvaged; Raper saved his paint box. A number of the landscapes and natural history drawings that he made on the island have survived.
Raper (1970), p. vi. Initially, the aim was to provide a development model of programmes and institutions that could be replicated across the country. Advisory support in this respect was provided by experts from Harvard and Michigan State Universities, the Ford Foundation, and USAID.Yousaf (2003), pp. 370–71.
The documents revealed that Judy Raper, the university's Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research, wrote to Wilyman after the investigation saying that it should not have occurred, that she was "sincerely sorry for this to have happened", and that "academic misconduct processes are not a forum for academic debate".

A promising Lock forward, Selby was held in such high esteem, he came under the personal guidance of the legendary Johnny Raper. With a promising career in front of him, the community was deeply saddened by Selby's premature death just before the start of the 1989 NSWRL season.
He was cremated at Woronora Crematorium, and the Wake was held later at St. George Leagues Club. Club legend, Johnny Raper quoted in the media that "Only Clive Churchill's funeral was bigger than Stoney's".St.George & Sutheralnd Shire Leader.Aug 2005 He was survived by his wife and three children.
Raper identified that the Schizophyllum commune had more than 23,000 mating types. In 2008 there was a celebration of her contributions to science. In 2012 she was elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2017 she spoke at the Burlington Writers Workshop.
Post-playing Broughton coached the St. George Dragons in third grade and reserve grade (three premierships 1962-1964) and went on to become the club's chairman of selectors in 1968. He later worked for the NSWRFL before a season coaching Brisbane's Brothers club in 1974. The following season Broughton returned to Sydney with the Balmain club, whom he coached from 1975 to 1976, then Newtown from 1977 to the fifth game of 1978, after which a major internal upheaval caused him, along with reserve grade coach Dave Bolton, to be dismissed in favour of St. George legend (and ex-Jet) Johnny Raper"Raper takes over the reins"; in Sydney Morning Herald; 28 April 1978; p. 18 and Bob Carnegie.
Red was born October 3, 1911 to Franklin & Julia Crouse Raper on a tobacco farm in Davidson County, just outside Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was the youngest of 8 children. His brother Kenneth was also a mycologist. Beyond mycology and genetics, Red loved music and was an avid trumpet player.
Illustration of a presumably live bird by George Raper, 1790; the junior synonym P. raperi is based on this image. The white swamphen inhabited wooded lowland areas in wetlands. Nothing was recorded about its social and reproductive behaviour and its nest, eggs and call were never described. Presumably it did not migrate.

He left the club at the end of the season. In 1989 Raper signed on with Sydney's Western Suburbs Magpies on a one-year deal with the club. His opportunities though were yet again limited and after only a mere five appearances for the season his contract was not renewed and his first grade career came to an end.
In it he asks that his painting case 'be delivered...to my dearest and beloved Mother'. In May 1796, Raper was given his first command, as master and commander of the cutter HMS Expedition. He was despatched to Gibraltar and then the West Indies, bringing his ship through a hurricane near Barbados with much damage but no lives lost.

This was seen as unacceptable by the Wigan board, and Lindsay in particular who had in total seven coaches at the club after his return with Andy Goodway, Frank Endacott, Stuart Raper, Denis Betts & Ian Millward all losing their jobs due to poor performances. (Mike Gregory was given leave due to an illness from which he later died).
She spent 2006 on secondment at the National Science Foundation. Her research considers the characterisation of particulates and their impact on pollution control. She has focussed on pharmaceutical and medicinal applications of aerosol powders. Raper was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation at the University of Wollongong in July 2008, a position she held until December 2018.
Carlene Allen "Cardy" Raper (January 9, 1925 - September 5, 2019) was an American mycologist and science writer. She identified that certain species of mushroom bearing fungi have over 23,000 mating types. She is regarded as one of the first women taxonomists in mycology. She was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Edward Raper (1806 - 29 March 1882) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was born in Dublin and migrated to Australia around 1832. In 1834 he married Jane Feeney, with whom he had seven children. He worked as a butcher in Sydney, and in 1860 was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Canterbury.
The English mycologists Howard Florey and Norman Heatley had been isolating penicillin at the University of Oxford, but were looked for ways to improve the quantities produced. The National Academy of Sciences directed them towards Raper's laboratory. Through collaborations with other groups across the United States, more efficient strains were identified – the best coming from a moldy cantaloupe brought in by a Peoria housewife in 1943 – and enough penicillin was produced to be made available to the Allied troops in time for the D-Day landings. After the war, Raper stayed at Peoria, which he combined with teaching at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, but in 1953, he and his family moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where Raper had accepted a position at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
They were honourably acquitted. Raper then served on and . In June 1793 he received his commission as lieutenant and moved to . In September that year he moved to the former French ship Commerce de Marseille, one of the vessels which had defected to the British during the Siege of Toulon; his presence is recorded in that ship's muster as 'Rapert ... Lieut't anglais'.
In their 1949 monograph of the genus, Raper and Thom treated P. commune and P. lanosum in subsection Lanata. P. commune (Thom) was included in the series along with . Since then, there has been two additional species added: P. echinosporum (Nehira) and P. giganteum (Roy and Singh). The species is presently treated in Penicillium subgenus Penicillium section Viridicata series Camemberti.
The organ is a large four manual instrument. The oldest parts of the organ date from 1622 by the builder John Raper. There was further work in 1756 and 1758 by John Snetzler and 1788 by Ryley. Forster and Andrews worked on the organ in 1845, 1854, 1876, 1900 and 1908, with John Compton providing the last restoration in 1938.
Charles Raper Jonas (December 9, 1904 – September 28, 1988) was a U.S. Representative from North Carolina for ten terms (1953–1973). At the time of his election in 1952, he became the first Republican to represent his state in either house of the U.S. Congress since his own father, Charles A. Jonas, and George M. Pritchard left office in 1931.
Tyrosinase is an oxidase that is the rate-limiting enzyme for controlling the production of melanin. The enzyme is mainly involved in two distinct reactions of melanin synthesis otherwise known as the Raper Mason pathway. Firstly, the hydroxylation of a monophenol and secondly, the conversion of an o-diphenol to the corresponding o-quinone. o-Quinone undergoes several reactions to eventually form melanin.
The species was the subject of an illustration by Sydney Parkinson, artist on HM Bark Endeavour's voyage to the Pacific from 1769 to 1771. A colour botanical engraving based on Parkinson's work is part of Banks' Florilegium. First Fleet midshipman and artist George Raper depicted the species in two works: an untitled watercolour study (c. 1788) and Bird Of Point Jackson (1789).
Barber houses have provided inspiration for Christmas cards, wall hangings, and at least one dollhouse model. Dykes returned to the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in 2005 under the influence of coach Stuart Raper. Dykes played 22 games for Cronulla in his return year for the club as they qualified for the finals but were eliminated in the first week by rivals St. George. Dykes spent two further years at Cronulla-Sutherland as the club failed to qualify for the finals on both occasions.
Raper played 168 games for Canterbury and scored 333 points during his career. He was awarded the Canterbury 'player of the year' in 1967. In 1973, Ron moved to Brisbane to play for the Redcliffe Dolphins. He represented Queensland in two appearances that year and was unlucky to miss selection on the 1973 Kangaroo tour after breaking his arm in Redcliffe's BRL grand final loss to Valleys.

He married Cordelia Raper of Bedale, North Yorkshire and lived at 53 High Street, Portsmouth. They had no children and his legacy of £20,000 went first to his wife. Wishart's will stipulated that anyone who ever owned his land or money needed to take his surname. The money eventually went to his nephew William Wishart who was Principal at Edinburgh University in 1736 or 1737.
Thomas Love Peacock's novel of 1829 The Misfortunes of Elphin relates much of Elfin's story. The novel is in part a satire of contemporary British life and in part a playful and ironic version of Welsh legend. The novel includes the discovery of Taleisin as a baby and the attempted raper of Elfin's wife by Rhun - which is considerably toned down for a comic novel.
Lieutenant Christopher Raper succeeded Cartwright in 1766 as Sherbornes commander for the next three years. Between 1769 and 1777 the cutter was commanded successively by Lieutenants Stephen Rains, Thomas Rayment and Thomas Gaborian, all the while remaining based in the Channel. Her final commanders were Lieutenant Arthur Twyman, from September 1777 until May 1778, and then Lieutenant Arthur Hayne until September 1779. She was then laid up.
With Parramatta leading 18–2 with 10 minutes to play, it seemed the club was destined to meet Brisbane the following week in the decider but Canterbury managed to stage an incredible comeback and go on to win the match 32–20 in extra time. Raper then moved to England to play with Castleford and spent 3 seasons with the club before retiring at the end of 2001.
Only two paintings that can be dated to his period of service in the Mediterranean are known to have survived – they are of a dolphin and a shark, and are held at the State Library of New South Wales. In April 1795 Raper joined as a lieutenant. While serving on the Cumberland, he wrote his will. Dated 14 October 1795, it is a simple document compared to most 18th-century wills.
Born in Kingsford, New South Wales in 1944 Coote was a South Sydney junior and the son of 1930s Easts forward Jack Coote. He was a tall, rangy with an upright running style. He was famous for his outstanding cover defence and low, "round-the-legs" tackling technique. He was bestowed the name "Prince of Locks" acknowledging him as second greatest Australian lock ever (behind "King of Locks" Johnny Raper).
First described by American mycologist Charles Thom in 1906, P. roqueforti was initially a heterogeneous species of blue-green, sporulating fungi. They were grouped into different species based on phenotypic differences, but later combined into one species by Kenneth B. Raper and Thom (1949). The P. roqueforti group got a reclassification in 1996 due to molecular analysis of ribosomal DNA sequences. Formerly divided into two varieties ― cheese-making (P.

In a special fixture to mark the New Zealand Rugby League's diamond jubilee, a match was played between Auckland and New Zealand at Carlaw Park in front of 12,000 fans. Ernie Asher was present at the match and carried out the ceremonial kick-off. Auckland included Australians John Raper, Phil Hawthorne and Dick Thornett as guest players. The Colin O'Neil won the New Zealand Rugby League's player of the year award.
South Sydney fullback Eric Simms' tally of 265 points for the season from 112 goals, 19 field-goals and one try topped the season point scoring record that had been set in the 1935 season by Dave Brown. The 1969 season's Rothmans Medallist was South Sydney's Denis Pittard. The 1969 season also saw the retirement from the League of future Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame inductee, John Raper.
The etymology of the station is not clear: Either it is from the Khoikhoi language for 'red spot',Peter Edmund Raper: New Dictionary of South African Place Names. Penicillium verrucosum was initially incorrectly placed in synonymy with the species Penicillium viridicatum by Raper and Thom. Later, after disagreements arose upon the identification and naming of these fungi, their growth rates, mycotoxin productions and sources were observed. Careful observation concluded that P. verrucosum and P. viridicatum were indeed separate species. Experimental results showed that the mycotoxins ochratoxin A and citrinin are produced by P. verrucosum but not by P. viridicatum.
The album received by and large positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has an average score of 73 out of 100, which indicates "generally favorable reviews" based on 18 reviews. Calling Noir a “melodic genius”, The Guardian‘s Dave Simpson described the album as “a cross between a classic 1960s album and half-forgotten children's TV themes”, “rich in the sort of melodies you'd think went out with Simon and Garfunkel and Smile-era Beach Boys.” In similar vein, PopMatters’ Dan Raper described the album as “sophisticated pop music with broad appeal” that “hums with 60s pop brilliantine and a slightly uncomfortable childhood nostalgia”. Speaking about notable influences on the album, Raper wrote that “Jim Noir casually allows the history of pop music to inform his arrangements; luckily, he never allows them to overwhelm his natural sense of melody.

Steadman was made full-time coach of the Castleford Tigers towards the end of 2001 after Stuart Raper left for Wigan. Steadman took the club to the top 6 playoffs in 2002 and then the club finished 8th in 2003. 2004 saw his worst year as coach when the club failed to win any games under Steadman. A lot of people blamed the board for not backing him with money to spend.
92 Whitcomb was a very active Mason. He became the first person to be knighted as a Masonic Knights Templar in Indiana, on May 20, 1848. He organized a Masonic lodge which for several years met in his home. He was always proud of his relationship with the Masons, and the Raper Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar, was established in his home where it met for several years before building a lodge.
Ron's mother and father, as well as other commuters, had to stop one evening on their return from Red Bluff for more than an hour on the highway to let thousands of deer cross the road in mass. They did it every year until the '60s. According to Ron, Joseph Gerevas was the oldest living native of Fairfield when he died at 91. As was Ron's mother, Sis Raper when she died at 86.
Sharecropping agreements can, however, be made fairly, as a form of tenant farming or sharefarming that has a variable rental payment, paid in arrears. While working at the University of Wisconsin in 1979, Ann Worley, Kenneth Raper and Marianne Hohl discovered an organism that fit no recognized genus of the slime mold family Acrasiomycetes. Acrasiomycetes can be divided into two classes: Acrasidae and Dictyostelidae, based on morphological characteristic. However, F.alba did not truly fit into either of these subclasses but shared a few characteristics of both. Although F.alba shared characteristics of subclasses within Acrasiomycetes, Worley et al.
Red Raper was a pioneer in the study of fungal sexual genetics. He studied mating systems in filamentous heterotrophs, beginning with the aquatic genus Achlya.Raper JR. "Steroid Sexual Hormones in a Water Mould", 1968, The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Proceedings Section of Sciences No. 11. Once thought to be fungi because of their filamentous growth form and nutritional habits, Achlya and other water molds are now known to belong to the Kingdom Chromalveolata.
He subsequently contested Islington East at the 1918 general election as a Coalition Conservative and was elected to the Commons. He sat as a member of parliament for a single term, and did not contest the next election in 1922. On leaving parliament Raper concentrated on his business interests, much pof it involving business in Scandinavia. He was awarded the Order of the White Rose of Finland in 1926 for his work in the promotion of Anglo-Finnish trade.
There, he impressed his tutors so much that he was awarded a $260 annual assistantship, which enabled him to complete his A.B. degree, which he did in 1929. Raper then went to Washington, D.C. to work in the new Division of Soil Microbiology at the Department of Agriculture, alongside Charles Thom. While there, he met and married Louise Montgomery Williams. He also enrolled at George Washington University following Thom's suggestion, and was awarded a master's degree in 1931.
As of November 2014, the diocese has two vicars general, Very Reverend Dennis Wassmuth (Vicar General for Finance), and Very Reverend Joseph daSilva (Vicar General for the Clergy and Parishes). The chancellor is Mark Raper, who also serves as the Director of the Diocesan Canonical Office. On November 4, 2014, Pope Francis appointed Peter F. Christensen as the eighth bishop of Boise. He was installed on December 17, 2014 at St. John Cathedral in Boise, Idaho.

Numbered 13, the loose forward or lock forward packs behind the two-second-rows in the scrum. Some teams choose to simply deploy a third prop in the loose forward position, while other teams use a more skilful player as an additional playmaker. Loose forwards that feature in their nation's Halls of Fame include Australia's Ron Coote, Johnny Raper and Wally Prigg, Great Britain's Vince Karalius, Ellery Hanley and 'Rocky' Turner, and New Zealand's Charlie Seeling.
Lupinine has a chiral carbon atom; therefore, total syntheses of lupinine need to be enantioselective for (-)-lupinine in order to provide the biologically active product. The first racemic total synthesis of lupinine occurred in 1937 by Clemo, Morgan, and Raper. Six more total syntheses of lupinine followed between 1940-1956, with the first enantioselective synthesis of lupinine occurring in 1966 by Goldberg and Ragade. Since that initial enantioselective synthesis, there have been numerous total syntheses of both enantio-pure and racemic lupinine.

For that reason, the Comilla Model piloted a methodology for stimulating agricultural and rural development, based on the principle of grassroots cooperative participation by the people.Arthur F Raper, Rural Development in Action: The Comprehensive Experiment at Comilla, East Pakistan, Cornell University Press: Ithaca (1970) Khan found inspiration for the cooperative development aspect of his model from German cooperative pioneer Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen, whose rural credit unions had been an early example of institution-building in predominantly non-literate communities.
According to Ida B. Wells and the Tuskegee University, most lynching victims were accused of murder or attempted murder. Rape or attempted rape was the second most common accusation; such accusations were often pretexts for lynching black people who violated Jim Crow etiquette or engaged in economic competition with white people. Sociologist Arthur F. Raper investigated one hundred lynchings during the 1930s and estimated that approximately one-third of the victims were falsely accused.Gunnar Myrdal, An American Dilemma (New York, 1944), page 561.
2005 started very well for Cronulla and Raper, however, by the end of the season the Sharks had limped home into 7th place in the finals. There are a number of running gags through this supposed history of the twentieth century, which are not immediately apparent. One is the existence of a piece of farmyard equipment called 'The Chicken Raper'. Another is that every major celebrity trial, from Fatty Arbuckle to O.J. Simpson, is referred to as "the trial of the century." A third is the newspaper fear-mongering by drawing a caricature of America's enemy du jour (among them, Spaniards, Nazis, and hippies) sexually assaulting the Statue of Liberty.
In the 1974 elections, several Australian sporting competitors endorsed the Liberal party in advertisements that ran on television. Competitors involved included Ron Barassi, NSWRL player Johnny Raper and horse trainer Tommie Smith. That year, the Australian team qualified for the 1974 FIFA World Cup, the first successful qualification to the FIFA World Cup in the country's history after failing to qualify to the 1966 and 1970 tournaments. It would prove to be the only appearance for the Australian team for more than three decades.
Raper is best remembered for his works on three groups of organisms. He produced a Manual of the Aspergilli in 1945 with Charles Thom, incorporating their various earlier works on the genus Aspergillus. He was instrumental in the study of many strains of Penicillium, and their use in the production of penicillin. He also described the slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum, laying out the various features that made it a good study organism; it has gone on to become one of the most studied model species.

The purpose was to enforce white supremacy and intimidate black people through racial terrorism. According to Ida B. Wells and Tuskegee University, most lynching victims were accused of murder or attempted murder. Rape or attempted rape was the second most common accusation; such accusations were often pretexts for lynching black people who violated Jim Crow etiquette or engaged in economic competition with whites. Sociologist Arthur F. Raper investigated one hundred lynchings during the 1930s and estimated that approximately one-third of the victims were falsely accused.

Before the St. Helens Final Elimination clash, Aspinwall commented, "My goal at the beginning of the season was to get eight to ten games, maybe come off the bench, but because of the injury crisis that we've had, especially in the backs, I've found myself in the Semis now and one game away from a Grand Final.” Coach Stuart Raper played Aspinwall alongside several other up and coming youngsters during the 2002's Super League VII. 2003 was a year of ups and downs for Rieck; at times he looked brilliant but more often that not simple mistakes and poor ball handling cost him and his team at several times throughout the season. Injuries (particularly with his hamstring) also started to become more frequent for Rieck and he missed several regular-season games. All of this meant Rieck only scored 8 tries for his second season at Cronulla. The 2004 season become Rieck's last at the Cronulla Sharks as Stuart Raper took over from Chris Anderson towards the end of the season.
The confluence of the Bhagirathi, which flows in rapids with strong currents meets a much calmer river in the Alaknanda and this has been vividly described by the British captain Raper as: > The contrast between the two rivers joining here is striking. The > Bhaghirathi runs down a steep declivity with rapid force, roaring and > foaming flowing over large fragments placed in its bed, while the placid, > Alakananda, flowing, with a smooth, unruffled surface, gently winds round > the point till, meeting with her turbulent consort, she is forcibly hurried > down, and unites her clamours with the blustering current.

However, there were some on-field highlights none more so than their round 22 upset of the high-flying Sydney Roosters who were sitting on top of the ladder at the time.
The Blyde, meaning "glad", "joyous" or "happy""Dictionary of Southern African Place Names" by RE Raper - HSRC in Cape Dutch, was thus named during a voortrekker expedition. Penicillium spinulosum was first discovered in 1910 by Dr. Charles Thom as a contaminant in another Penicillium culture sent to him by the German mycologist, Dr. Carl Wehmer. Classification and identification of the genus Penicillium were solely based on morphological traits before DNA sequencing was discovered. Key characteristics that are commonly involved in the grouping of P. spinulosm include vesiculate, rapid growth, spherical rough conidia and long conidiophores that projected from tangled mass of aerial hyphae. In 1949, Raper & Thom classified P. spinulosum as a member of the Penicillium section Monovertcillata due to its simple conidiospores branching pattern.

With the odds stacked against Raper and his position continually under pressure after a poor first season he defied many odds by keeping his Castleford side near the top of the table for the majority of the season in which they eventually finished sixth. The 1999 season saw the Castleford Tigers continue their progress. The season started with the side missing out on the last Challenge Cup Final to be held at Wembley Stadium after a last-gasp score saw London Broncos knock the side out. The positive cup run continued into the league and the Castleford Tigers ended the league season in the top 5.

His legendary cover defence and ball skills had him be acknowledged during his playing career as the best loose-forward the world had ever seen. He played in eight Grand final wins with St George between 1959 and 1966. Raper attributed his success to a training discipline and fitness fanaticism that was ahead of its time. While St George's early adoption of circuit training in the late 1950s was a major contributing factor in their eleven-year premiership run, Raper's own commitment to additional running and weights every day and often alone, enabled him to achieve a personal goal of being the fittest player in the fittest team in the competition.
A number of Raper's brothers had success in top-grade rugby league. Ron played a 128-game career for Canterbury over seven seasons from 1966, kicking a field- goal from the halfway line in their 1967 Grand final loss to South Sydney. He played out the end of his career as captain/coach at Wests Brisbane and made two representative appearance for Queensland in 1973. Maurie Raper played eighty-seven first grade matches for Penrith and Cronulla in an eight-year career, Gerard made two first grade appearances for Canterbury in 1977 and Peter, two appearances for Newtown while Michael played in lower grades.
Eunetta T. Boone and P. Karen Raper, known for their work as script editors and consultants on predominantly black series such as Roc and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, also were added to the series in its second year. This followed in the tradition of sister series Family Matters, which had begun to showcase more producers and writers who were known, or went on to become known, for their work on shows with a black perspective. The series was principally produced by Miller-Boyett Productions, with associates Bickley-Warren Productions, and was backed by Lorimar Television in season one and Warner Bros. Television in season two.
In 2011, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) asked for the reopening of the case. Militant organisations such as Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen and Harkat ul- Ansar have been accused of carrying out rapes. The Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front has been accused of ethnic cleansing of using murder, arson, and rape as a weapon of war to drive out hundreds of thousands of Hindu Kashmiri Pandits from the region. Preview. Preview. Following the rise of rapes by the Indian armed forces and militants, HRW has submitted that the victims of raper suffer ostracism and there is a "code of silence and fear" that prevents people from reporting such abuse.
The first page of the petition circulated by the founding members of the Newmarket Citizens' Band The band was established in 1872 by Walter W. Roe, sixteen years old at the time and son of the town's postmaster and fur trader William Roe. He "circulated a petition appealing for funds" with eleven other youth, including his brothers Albert and Frederick, and friends George Dolan, Thomas Gain, George Hackett, James Harrison, John Hughes, William Hutchcroft, Frederick Raper, Robert Rest, and Frederick Saxton. Each of the twelve founding members of the band had contributed $5, and the appeal drew subscriptions from 69 other residents, primarily the elderly. In total, they raised $319.
In February, 2006 Halcyon Days was produced by The Performance Gallery, a professional non-equity theatre in Cincinnati, Ohio. Cincinnati CityBeat Reviewer, Tom McElfresh noted of the play that "At a guess, the reason Halcyon Days is not seeing more current productions is because, apt to the times though its satire might be, it plays more like a Saturday Night Live sketch than theater." A production in Los Angeles was recorded for the LA Theatre Works show "The Play's The Thing" and broadcast on several radio stations around the United States in late 2006. It starred Ed Begley, Jr. as Andy Raper, Richard Masur as Eddie, and Anne Archer as Patricia.
Key members of Tau Phi Delta, William Raper Kennedy, Lee B. Purcell, and Maurice Bayard had all left to participate in the war, leaving Rolin Roscoe James as the sole member by the end of the war. James restored the society by initiating five new members shortly after the turn of the 20th century. These new members pressured James to change the name to Theta Gamma Psi (ΘΓΨ), but James successfully argued to keep the society named Tau Phi Delta. In 1903–1904, the Fraternity had grown so large that it ceased to meet at Vincennes, instead meeting at a small cottage nearby, The Bayard Cottage.
Numerous injury problems, including a blood clot that prevented him playing a single game in first grade during the 1994 season, severely affected his career and prevented him from achieving the status predicted after a fine début season with Cronulla in 1992.Rugby League Week, 2 September 1992 (Round 22) He also represented Australia at the 1995 World Cup, and was selected as an interchange player to represent New South Wales in one game of the 1997 State of Origin series but did not take the field. At Parramatta, Raper was in the 1997 and 1998 sides which made the finals series. Raper's final first grade game in Australia was the infamous 1998 preliminary final against Canterbury.
Quayle was appointed the first General Manager of the NSWRL. It was in this capacity that he, as well as Don Furner and two St. George legends, John Raper and Reg Gasnier, chose Dragons lock Brad Mackay, despite being on the 1993 NSWRL season grand final's losing side, to be awarded the Clive Churchill Medal as man-of-the-match, with Queensland premier Wayne Goss questioning the decision. At the end of the 1996 ARL season, Quayle resigned as ARL chief executive and was replaced by Balmain president (and former hooker) Neil Whittaker, who would become the first CEO of the National Rugby League. Quayle later worked for SOCOG as an events manager during the 2000 Summer Olympics.
In 2001, Green, McFalls and Smith published a paper that debunked Raper's conclusion regarding the relationship between economic conditions and hate crimes.ibid. By extending Raper's data-set beyond 1929 and running a multiple regression with controls, they found that Raper had merely identified a correlation between the two variables in the time period of his analysis, and that there was actually no meaningful relationship at all between the price of cotton and the number of lynchings. Other studies have also refuted the link between economic conditions and hate crimes. In 1998, Green, Glaser and Rich published a study on the relationship between citywide unemployment and homophobic, racist, and anti-semitic hate-crimes, and found no significant correlation.
After a successful 1996 season at home with Cronulla, Raper was offered the head coaching role at English Super League club the Castleford Tigers and joined on 27 April 1997. At the start of 1997's Super League II Castleford were seen by many as a team simply making up the numbers and few held hopes for their survival to avoid being relegated. Throughout the season they continually struggled large parts and in the end only just managed to avoid being relegated, eventually finishing tenth. With a new season in 1998 many pundits predicted the Tigers would be one of the sides to face the drop down to National League One by the end of the season.
During the 2004 season Raper was called home to the Sharks and originally found himself as an assistant coach to then head coach Chris Anderson. Though before the season's end he was called on to take the reins of their first grade squad. At the start of his tenure at the Sharks, the former Cronulla pupil was given the task of rebuilding the club after they failed to make the NRL playoffs in 2003 for the first time in four seasons. While Raper's first season record after taking over from Anderson was modest, he and his coaching team dealt with several obstacles in 2004 and showed some classy football against the top sides.
Dan Raper of PopMatters wrote "Meds is cloaked in the sophisticated sheen of a band completely established; pushing in some areas, content to rely on established constructions and melodic elements in others. If you haven't experienced the familiar cycle of infatuation–disappointment–indifference with Placebo, you could find these songs pleasant, at times even exhilarating. But I've just reached the final stage of that cycle, and nothing here forces me to reconsider." MacKenzie Wilson of AllMusic called Meds "as bare and honest as Placebo have ever been, thanks to French producer Dimitri Tikovoi's straightforward approach in getting the band to make a bona fide rock record", writing that "There's a fresh vulnerability here and a sense of danger, too".
The Western Suburbs Rosellas, Western Suburbs, Wests, The Rosellas, 2/10 or The Maggots (local nickname) are a Rugby league club based in the Newcastle, NSW region of Australia. It was a foundation member of the Newcastle Rugby League in 1909 and has been one of the most successful teams in that competition.Newcastle Rugby League competition records to 1998 The club has had a number of players represent Australia including Wally Prigg, a member of the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame.Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame "Wally Prigg" Johnny Raper, another member of the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame played for Wests after he finished playing for the St. George Dragons.
TNT's Dallas is picking up right where the original left off and rolling all of those attributes into one character: Leonor Varela's "Marta Del Sol." A writer from the International Business Times said that Marta turned out to be "shady a character as anyone and could give those Ewing boys a run for their money." A reporter from Inside Soap said that Marta had a history of "violence fuelled by jealousy" and was "as stable as a bucking bronco at the Southfork rodeo". Digital Spy's Fletcher held a similar opinion, naming her as John Ross' "psychotic bit on the side", "crazy former lover", "crazy eyed date raper" and a "crazy-eyed drug-sex woman".
In 1985 he was selected by the publication Rugby League Week as one of the initial four post-war "Immortals" of the Australian game alongside Churchill, Raper and Gasnier. Fulton was also inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985. In 1994 Fulton was inducted as a Member of the Order of Australia "for service to rugby league football" and in 2000 he received the Australian Sports Medal. In 2002 he was inducted into the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame. In February 2008, Fulton was named in the list of Australia's 100 Greatest Players (1908–2007) which was commissioned by the NRL and ARL to celebrate the code's centenary year in Australia.
It appeared as though those hat-trick of wins would get the Sharks going in 2003, but the Sharks were never in the finals hunt throughout the year. Other notable wins included a 34–28 win over the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville, a comeback 20–10 win over the Brisbane Broncos after trailing 10–2 at halftime, a 25–16 win over bitter rivals St. George Illawarra at home and then a 54–34 win over the Rabbitohs in a bottom-of-the-table clash (this match occurring the week after the humiliating defeat against Parramatta). Anderson was replaced during the off-season by Stuart Raper who had previous coaching experience with the Wigan Warriors.
Johnson received the Danforth Center Award for excellence as a teaching fellow at Harvard in 1987. He was a National Science Foundation fellow from 1984 to 1986, a European Union ESPRIT postdoctoral fellow from 1990 to 1992, a National Research Council postdoc fellow from 1992 to 1993, a David and Lucille Packard Foundation Science and Engineering fellow from 1994 to 1999, and an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow in 1995. He received the Jack Raper Outstanding Technology Directions Paper Award in 1999, the Lindback Foundation Award for distinguished teaching at the University of Pennsylvania in 2003, the Dean's Award for Undergraduate Research Mentorship in 2011 and became a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2011.
Knowing that large-scale production for medical use was futile in England, Florey and Heatley travelled to the US in 1941 to persuade pharmaceutical companies for funding mass production. Between 1941 and 1943, Moyer, Coghill and Raper at the USDA Northern Regional Research Laboratory (NRRL) in Peoria, Illinois, United States, developed methods for industrialized penicillin production and isolated higher-yielding strains of the Penicillium fungus.(1) (2) In December 1942, survivors of the Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston were the first burn patients to be successfully treated with penicillin. Simultaneous research by Jasper H. Kane and other Pfizer scientists in Brooklyn developed the practical, deep-tank fermentation method for production of large quantities of pharmaceutical-grade penicillin.
Water, Land and Ecosystems is one of several new research programmes approved by the CGIAR during 2011Vivienne Raper, CGIAR announces next batch of research programmes, SciDevNet, 21 July 2011 after an extensive period of consultation that began in 2009. This research programme will draw on the resources of 14 CGIAR and numerous external partners to provide a more integrated approach to research into managing natural resources. The aim of the research programme is to increase agricultural productivity while protecting the environment, so food security is ensured for most of humanity and that poverty becomes history. The five main strands to the programme are: River basins; Irrigation systems; Information systems; Resource reuse and recovery; and Rainfed agriculture systems.
In 1955, Barksdale became a Research Associate at the New York Botanical Garden and returned to the study of aquatic fungi. From 1955 to 1961, she expanded existing research on the species Achlya bisexualis, focusing on the fungus' unique sexual reproductive hormones. It had been previously concluded by fellow mycologist, Dr.John Raper, that the development of sexual organs in A. bisexualis was mediated by the exchange of hormones between the male and female strains of the fungus. Over the course of 10 years of research, Dr. Barksdale discovered and isolated the sex hormone antheridiol: a steroid released by the female strains of A. bisexualis, which stimulates the growth of antheridia when introduced to male strains of the fungus.
The subsurface structures are not to scale. The range runs roughly NW/SE in its western part and in an east-west direction in its mid and eastern section and is approximately 250 km long, from Worcester, past Robertson, Montagu, Swellendam, Heidelberg and Riversdale to the proximity of George. The Langeberg's most westerly point is located 5 km east of the town of Worcester; the range ends some 20 km North of Mossel Bay in the east.[Dictionary of Southern African Place Names by Dr P.E. Raper] The open plains of the Little Karoo border the north of the mountain range, while to the south lies the Agulhas Plain and the Overberg wheatbelt.
The Australian team that day, coached by Harry Bath, boasted legends of the Australian game in Raper (Lock), Eric Simms (Fullback), Graeme Langlands and Johnny Greaves (centres), Bob Fulton (Five-eighth), Billy Smith (halfback), Arthur Beetson (prop) and Dick Thornett and Ron Coote (second-row). Although the Final attracted over 54,000 fans, this was actually not the highest attendance of the 1968 World Cup. That came during the opening game of the tournament when 62,256 saw Australia defeat Great Britain 25–10. This would stand as the highest attendance for a World Cup match until 73,631 attended the 1992 World Cup Final to see Australia again defeat Great Britain 10–6 at the famous Wembley Stadium in London.
But even today, there are computer systems in production, such as cellphones, which are often not powerful enough to display true 3D graphics, and therefore use pseudo-3D for that purpose. Many games from the 1980s' pseudo-3D arcade era and 16-bit console era are ported to these systems, giving the manufactures the possibility to earn revenues from games that are now nearly twenty years old. By 1989, 2.5D representations were surfaces drawn with depth cues and a part of graphic libraries like GINO.Raper, Jonathan. “The 3-dimensional geoscientific mapping and modeling system: a conceptual design.” In Three dimensional applications in Geographic Information Systems, edited by Jonathan F. Raper, 11–19.
They arrived again in the following year with even more entries, where the judging of the breed would go on to have future ramifications. The judge in question at the dog show, a Mr. George Raper, only chose winners with "rose ears"—ears that folded at the tip, as with the standard for Bulldogs. The ladies formed the French Bull Dog Club of America and created the breed standard which stated for the first time that the "erect bat ear" was the correct type.Coile (2005): p. 7 In the early 20th century the breed remained in vogue for high society, with dogs changing hands for up to $3,000 and being owned by members of influential families such as the Rockefellers and the J. P. Morgans.
" Slant Magazine called the album "[...] so damned slick and irresistible[...] There's a punky sassiness to most of the album[...]" Dan Raper of PopMatters compared their style of music to those of Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson. He complimented their songs "Revolution", "Leave Me Alone", "Mouth Shut" and "Heavily Broken" stating that "[...]half the songs on the record fall into this mould of attractively packaged, unremarkable pop." Craig Mathieson of The Age gave positive reviews for "4ever" and "Revolution" but criticised the rest of the album. The New York Times said the album had "Sugar-sharp songs with a hint of intrigue[...]", and Entertainment Weekly also complimented them stating "Guilty pleasure or not, these girls won't be a Secret for long.
When a Super League was suggested, Castleford resisted a merger with Wakefield Trinity and Featherstone Rovers, and became a founder member of the Super League in 1996. The team performed weakly at the start of the season causing the resignation of coach John Joyner, the team avoided relegation by a whisker in 1997 following the appointment of Stuart Raper. The next season, they managed to frustrate the bleak predictions of pundits to move up the league, finishing sixth at the end of the season, after putting in some good performances and pleasing their fans with a sprinkling of victories. In 1999, they continued on this upward trajectory, finishing fifth, as well as making the semi-finals of both the Challenge Cup and the Grand Final play-offs.
The following season started in a similar fashion, with a run of 26 games from the start of the season before losing his place to Kenny Raper. He made just three further appearances that season, in place of Willie Brown. Although he played the first game of the 1978-79 season, he would make only one further appearance for Torquay, as a substitute for Lindsay Parsons in a 1-0 defeat away to Bournemouth in November 1978 before returning to non-league football with Welsh side Bridgend Town. He went on to play for Kidderminster Harriers, Merthyr Tydfil, and Gloucester City, before retiring due to injury, on which he was given a testimonial by Gloucester City in the 1987-88 season, with Arsenal being the visitors.
Over the next several years, Isemonger was both in and out of the first grade team with the Sharks for a variety of reasons; originally having to compete with representative players such as Chris McKenna, Tawera Nikau, Les Davidson and Danny Lee meant a first team position was more often than not hard to come by. With several senior players moving on as the years passed Isemonger was able to get more game time but again hit a stumbling block with two knee reconstructions in 2001 and 2002.Lang punch drunk at welcome party After eight seasons with Cronulla in which he made a total of seventy-four appearances, Isemonger was subsequently released from his contract by new coach Stuart Raper.
Pollard returned to Sydney in 1956, where he worked as a sports reporter with the Telegraph before starting his own publishing company in 1959, Jack Pollard Publishing, which specialised in books on sport and leisure topics. The Oxford Companion to Australian Cricket, Oxford, Melbourne, 1996, p. 423. Pollard was a prolific writer and editor, who produced a large number of sporting reference books, including a definitive five-volume history of Australian cricket, encyclopaedias on rugby union, golf, horse racing and a series of popular fishing guides. He also wrote biographies for several sports stars including tennis players Lew Hoad and Rod Laver, cricketer Keith Miller and umpire Lou Rowan, golfer Bruce Devlin, rugby league players Ken Thornett and Johnny Raper, and VFL player Peter McKenna.
By the early 1960s St George players were afforded movie star status in Sydney and names such as Reg Gasnier and Johnny Raper were highly familiar as were later those of Graeme Langlands, Billy Smith and Johnny King. Norm Provan.Captain-Coach 1962-65 1963 was a particularly notable year for the club. A new Leagues Club was opened on the Princes Highway at Carlton, and would become the hub of social life in the district and dubbed "the Taj Mahal". On the afternoon of 24 August 1963 Saints won the Grand Final in all three grades (First Grade 8–3 v Wests; Reserves 3-2 v Souths; 3rd Grade 12–2 v Canterbury) – this feat has not been achieved since.
Miles Hosken, a former mayor of Telford, welcomed the choice to give Danielle a Telford background due to the national exposure it gave the area. Sarah Raper, chief executive of economic development company Transforming Telford, commented: "We hope the new character will portray Telford in a positive light and increase national awareness of the town", and Councillor Eric Carter, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for regeneration, adding: "There are a lot of people working to put Telford on the map and this will help". The Daily Mirror sympathised with Danielle over the storyline which saw her manipulated by Archie, deeming it one of the more interesting EastEnders plot strands. Gareth McLean of The Guardian described Danielle as a "wet weekend incarnate", criticising the drawn out nature of the secret Mitchell storyline.
Following the defeat of Labor in the 2015 election, then leader Luke Foley remained as head of the party and opposition despite being in the position for a little more than three months. In October 2018, allegations were raised by NSW Corrections Minister David Elliott about an incident Foley had "a little bit too much to drink at a party and harassed an ABC journalist." Later that month, ABC journalist Ashleigh Raper released a statement, alleging that at an event in November 2016, Foley "placed his hand down the back of her dress and inside her underpants." Hours later, Foley read a statement in which he resigned as leader of the Labor Party, but denied the allegation and said he would commence defamation proceedings in the Federal Court.
Lord Howe white-throated pigeon (Columba vitiensis godmanae) painted by George Raper, 1790 – now extinct About 10% of Lord Howe Island's forests has been cleared for agriculture, and another 20% has been disturbed, mostly by domestic cattle and feral sheep, goats, and pigs. As a result, 70% of the island remains relatively untouched, with a variety of plants and animals, many of which are endemic, and some of which are rare or threatened.See Two species of plants, nine terrestrial birds, one bat, and at least four invertebrates have become extinct since 1778. Endemism at the generic level includes the palms Howea, Hedyscepe and Lepidorrhachis, a woody daisy Lordhowea, the tree Negria, the leech Quantenobdella howensis, three annelid worm genera (Paraplutellus, Pericryptodrilus and Eastoniella), an isopod shrimp Stigmops, a hemipteran bug Howeria, and a cricket Howeta.
Though the white swamphen was similar in size to the Australasian swamphen, it had proportionally shorter wings and therefore a higher wing load – perhaps the highest of all swamphens. Illustration of one white and one still- variegated individual by Raper, 1790 Van Grouw and Hume pointed out that a white colour aberration in birds is rarely caused by albinism (which is less common than formerly believed), but by leucism or progressive greying – a phenomenon van Grouw described in 2012 and 2013. These conditions produce white feathers due to the absence of cells which produce the pigment melanin. Leucism is inherited, and the white feathering is present in juveniles and does not change with age; progressive greying causes normally-coloured juveniles to lose pigment-producing cells with age, and they become white as they moult.
Antheridiol also stimulates the release of a second hormone, when introduced to the male strains, which promoted the growth of oogonia in the female strains. Her discoveries sparked a new wave of interest in the Achlya genus as a research subject over the following decades, and she and Dr. Raper are jointly considered the primary establishing figures in Achlya research, according to the retrospective on her life published in the 1981 issue of Achlya Newsletter. In 1960, Alma and Lane spent a year conducting research in Japan, at the Universities of Kyoto and Osaka. In 1961, Barksdale was promoted to Senior Research Associate at the New York Botanical Garden, and from 1972-1974 she held the position of Senior Botanist at the Garden, after which she retired due to failing health.
On 18 October 2018 Elliott used parliamentary privilege in the Legislative Assembly to raise an allegation that Luke Foley, at the time leader of the opposition, had "a little bit too much to drink at a party and harassed an ABC journalist." Later that month, ABC journalist Ashleigh Raper released a statement, alleging that at an event in November 2016, Foley "placed his hand down the back of her dress and inside her underpants." Hours later, Foley read a statement in which he resigned as leader of the Labor Party, but denied the allegation and said he would commence defamation proceedings in the Federal Court. Following the 2019 state election, Elliott was sworn in as the Minister for Police and Emergency Services in the second Berejiklian ministry, with effect from 2 April 2019.
O'Loughlin playing for Wigan in 2007 O'Loughlin made his breakthrough into the Wigan first team under head coach Stuart Raper during 2002's Super League VII. His first experience in the first team came as a substitute wearing jersey No. 22 during Wigan's 18–20 home defeat by Hull F.C. Two weeks later, O'Loughlin scored his first tries for the club as a substitute against Warrington, and subsequently made six consecutive appearances from the bench. He made his first starting appearance for Wigan during a 16–41 away victory against Warrington, when he was called upon to replace his injured brother-in-law, Andy Farrell. On that night, O'Loughlin played at , which eventually became his usual position, but during his first season he played in no less than three positions.
Shirley Halperin, writing for Entertainment Weekly, said the album featured "smooth, emotive vocals mingle with soaring melodies that'd make Paul McCartney proud". Dan Raper of PopMatters said the lyrics to "One Crowded Hour" were poetic, citing the lines "Well put me in a cage full of lions / I'll learn to speak lion / In fact I know the language well", as well as the "full and glorious" chorus; Watch Me Disappear was Augie March's most mainstream pop work to date, described as a further distillation of the band's earlier, even more complex, music. Richards considered it to be more streamlined than their early work, despite their attempts to maintain a sense of spontaneity. Zuel also noted a removal of much of the backing instrumentation which had acted as "clutter" around Richards' vocals on earlier work.
Wanderers View is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa, about 1.2 km north of City Hall. Bordering Braamfontein to the west and north, Hillbrow, and Johannesburg Park Station to the south, but according to Peter Raper in the New Dictionary of South African Place Names, it also the Station, the Eskom Centre, and the local YMCA all fall within the borders of Wanderers View as well. In the western part of the suburb, on Juta Street, was the Johannesburg Central Reformed Church building, which since 1997 has housed the Good News Community Church, also a Reformed Churches in South Africa (GKSA) church. On the opposite side of Wanderers View and one block north of Juta Street, on 117 De Korte Street, lies a park where the old Johannesburg Reformed Church (NGK) stood until its demolition in the 1990s.
English rape was in use since the 14th century in the general sense of "seize prey, take by force", from raper, an Old French legal term for "to seize", in turn from Latin rapere "seize, carry off by force, abduct". The Latin term was also used for sexual violation, but not always. It is contested that the legendary event known as "The Rape of the Sabine Women", while ultimately motivated sexually, did not entail sexual violation of the Sabine women on the spot, who were instead abducted, and then implored by the Romans to marry them (as opposed to striking a deal with their fathers or brothers first, as would have been required by law). Though the sexual connotation is today dominant, the word "rape" can be used in a non-sexual context in literary English.
Prior to the match, a minutes silence was observed in memory of the Australian Rugby League's Team of the Century coach Jack Gibson who had died only an hour before the game. Gibson's death was announced during the television broadcast by Channel 9's Peter Sterling who had won three NSWRL premierships for Parramatta under Gibson in 1981, 1982 and 1983. The living members of the ARL's Team of the Century – Reg Gasnier (CE), Mal Meninga (CE), Wally Lewis (FE), Andrew Johns (HB), Arthur Beetson (PR), Noel Kelly (HK), Duncan Hall (PR), Norm Provan (SR), Ron Coote (SR), Johnny Raper (LK), Graeme Langlands (Res) and Bob Fulton (Res) – were paraded to the crowd before the game as part of the Centenary celebrations. Members of the team who had died (Clive Churchill (FB), Brian Bevan (WG), Ken Irvine (WG), Dally Messenger (Res) and Frank Burge (Res)) were represented by family members.
Wehmer appeared to have been the first one to suggest that a single culture of Aspergillus can contain both uniseriate and biseriate sterigmata in 1901. Wehmer then suggested that the species A. albus, St. candida, and A. candidus were synonymous, but there wasn't enough information to prove any clear identities of these species. In 1926, Charles Thom, who was a scientist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Peoria, Illinois, and Church suggested to group A. candidus, A. Okazakii, St. szurakiana, and St. ochroleuca together as being synonymous because of their white-spore appearance. However, in 1945, Thom and Kenneth Raper (also a scientist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Peoria, Illinois) rejected this idea because there were many more white- spored strains found in other genus, and that the white-coloured property alone was not enough reason to group these species together in one category.
In 1913, after examining the Vienna specimen, Iredale concluded that the bird belonged in the genus Porphyrio and did not resemble the takahē. The takahē was once considered a close relative by some writers In 1928, the ornithologist Gregory Mathews discussed a 1790 painting by Raper which he thought differed enough from P. albus in proportions and colouration that he named a new species based on it: P. raperi. Mathews also considered P. albus distinct enough to warrant a new genus, Kentrophorina, due to having a (or spur) on one wing. In 1936, he conceded that P. raperi was a synonym of P. albus. The ornithologist Keith Alfred Hindwood agreed that the bird was an albino P. melanotus in 1932, and pointed out that the naturalists Johann Reinhold Forster and Georg Forster (his son) did not record the bird when Cook's ship visited Norfolk Island in 1774.
After he defeated Tony Williams in a rematch on November 2, he wrestled two matches in one night defeating Bart Sawyer and later teamed with USWA Southern Heavyweight Champion Brian Christopher losing to The American Eagles (Bill Dundee and Danny Davis) on November 9, 1992. Suffering several losses to The American Eagles during the next few weeks, Gaylord teamed with Brian Christopher and The Masters of Terror (Ken Wayne and Ken Raper) in an 8-man tag-team match defeating The American Eagles, Danny Davis and Bill Dundee and later the USWA Tag Team Champions The Moondogs (Moondog Spot and Moondog Spike) by disqualification on November 30. Losing to The Moondogs in a tag team match with The Star Rider, he also lost to Tony DeNucci by disqualification on December 14. In January 1993, he lost singles matches to Tony DeNucci, Danny Davis and Scott Campione.
Tugwell understood that the status of tenant farmers would not change if they could not vote, so he campaigned against poll tax, which prevented them voting, since they could not afford to pay it. His agency's goals were the four "R's": "retirement of bad land, relocation of rural poor, resettlement of the unemployed in suburban communities, and rehabilitation of farm families." Other individuals important in the fight to help the rural poor were Arthur Raper, an expert on tenancy farming, whose study Preface to Peasantry (1936) explained why the south's system held back the region's poor and caused them to migrate; and Howard Odum, a University of North Carolina sociologist and psychologist who founded the journal Social Forces, and worked closely with the Federal government. Odum wrote the 600-page masterwork Southern Regions of the United States, which became a guidebook for the New Deal.
Dan Raper of PopMatters praised the album as "one of the best examples of production shaping but not overwhelming the artist's vision". The Guardians John Burgess agreed, stating that because of Herbert's production, Murphy sounded "sonically enticing and varied [...] at times sultry, rude, powerful and tender across white noise, waltz time signatures and jazz sass", but was mixed on the album overall, adding that the pair "often let their noodling eclipse the songs, leaving few you'll actually be able to sing back to anyone." Pitchforks Mark Richardson remarked that "it's hard to imagine anyone not ranking this is the best thing Murphy has ever done" and that "when the songwriting is on, Ruby Blue seems perfect, the ultimate combination of human warmth and technological know-how." The website placed the album at number 41 on its list of the top 50 albums of 2005.
Rape charges or rumors were present in less than one-third of the lynchings; such charges were often pretexts for lynching blacks who violated Jim Crow etiquette or engaged in economic competition with whites. Other common reasons given included arson, theft, assault, and robbery; sexual transgressions (miscegenation, adultery, cohabitation); "race prejudice", "race hatred", "racial disturbance;" informing on others; "threats against whites;" and violations of the color line ("attending white girl", "proposals to white woman"). 1892\. According to the Tuskegee Institute, 38% of victims of lynching were accused of murder, 16% of rape, 7% for attempted rape, 6% were accused of felonious assault, 7% for theft, 2% for insult to white people and 24% were accused of miscellaneous offenses or no offense. In 1940, Sociologist Arthur F. Raper investigated one hundred lynchings after 1929 and estimated that approximately one-third of the victims were falsely accused.
The confluence got the name tag 'Dev' from a poor Brahmin called Deva Sharma who performed "rigorous religious austerities" here and was blessed by Rama, Vishnu's incarnation and hero of the epic Ramayana. There are two Kunds or ponds on the banks of the rivers which join here, these are: the Vasistha Kund on the Bhagirathi and the Brahma Kund on the bank of the Alakananda.
Relations between Lindsay and Sir Rodney had deteriorated but the leading clubs wanted Lindsay to assume control of the newly formed Super League. Lindsay immediately secured a new lucrative TV contract exclusively for Super League. He remained at Super League until he voluntarily retired at the end of 1999. Lindsay re-joined the club when they moved from Central Park to lodge at the home of Wigan Athletic, the JJB Stadium, after Dave Whelan saved them from liquidation. The club's dominance had come under threat now that the league had gone fully professional and the introduction of the salary cap and 20/20 ruling (now 20/25) which meant the club at the time had only won two Super League titles since 1996. With the return of Maurice Lindsay the club won one Challenge Cup, under the stewardship of Stuart Raper in 2002, reaching the finals of the Super League in 2000, 2001 & 2003, losing on each occasion.
In 2007 Stuart took over from Stuart Raper as head coach of the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks with a two-year contract, which was then extended to the end of the 2011 playing season. Despite the Sharks making the preliminary finals in 2008, Stuart's time with the club was marred by a horror year in 2009. Not only was the club in dire financial straits but the Cronulla Sharks club was also tarnished by media allegations about a 2002 group-sex incident involving former Sharks players, player Reni Maitua's dismissal after testing positive to drugs,Reni Maitua tests positive to drugs removal of the captaincy from key player Paul Gallen, due to making racist remarks several unsavoury incidents involving now-disgraced CEO Tony Zappia (including his assault of a female staff member and involvement in an insurance-fraud fan donation scandal).08/06/2009 Zappia quits On 19 July 2010 Stuart resigned as Cronulla-Sutherland coach six weeks before the end of the 2010 season.
The off-season was highlighted by the huge but controversial signing of former St. George Illawarra Dragons favourite Lance Thompson who was let go by the Dragons due to salary cap issues and in-fighting occurring at that club. Following a first round bye, the Sharks had a slow start to the season before a win against the South Sydney Rabbitohs in round four appeared to get things going. There were mixed results throughout the season, including two wins against the previous year's grand finalists North Queensland and a home win against the St. George Illawarra Dragons (its first against them since 2002), however after its round 16 away win against the Newcastle Knights in Newcastle everything started to fall apart with the Sharks, seemingly on their way to the finals, losing their last nine matches of the season. By the season's end, the Sharks had fallen to 13th place (third-last) and coach Stuart Raper, knowing his time was up, was sacked.
On May 17, 1876, the national convention was called to open by party Secretary John Russell due to the absence of Chairman Simeon B. Chase and was attended by 150 delegates, which one source describes as "not largely attended". Green Clay Smith, the former Territorial Governor of Montana, was selected to serve as the temporary chairman of the convention. James H. Raper, a representative from the United Kingdom Alliance, gave a speech at the convention. On the first ballot a variety of candidates split the 70 votes cast including Green Clay Smith with 28 votes, former presidential nominee James Black with 12, former vice presidential nominee John Russell with 8, R. A. Brown with 7, former New York Governor Myron H. Clark with 5, Gideon T. Stewart with 3, James G. Blaine with 2, and five others received a single vote each: former Portland Mayor Neal Dow, abolitionist and advocate for Native Americans Wendell Phillips, S. Merritt, W. D. Dodge and R. M. Foust.
After stints working as a conditioner for Castleford, as head coach of Bramley (1992), working in the player performance department of the Rugby Football League, head coach of Paris Saint-Germain, and assistant coach to both England and Great Britain, he took over the coaching reins at Sheffield Eagles in 1997, taking them to the Premiership semi-final in that year. A year later he was the coach who led Sheffield Eagles to a Challenge Cup final victory over the Wigan Warriors; this triumph has been described as one of the greatest shocks in Challenge Cup history. Sheffield Eagles merged with the Huddersfield Giants after 1999's Super League IV, and Kear retained his job as coach of the merged side before moving on to become the assistant coach to Stuart Raper at the Wigan Warriors. He was coach of the England team in the 2000 World Cup, leading them to the semi-finals.
Carbon Tracker was founded by UK fund manager Mark Campanale, with Jeremy Leggett serving as chairman. The organisation's first two reportsUnburnable Carbon (2011) and Unburnable Carbon (2013)argued that up to two-thirds of the world's known reserves and resources of oil, coal and gas could not be burned while avoiding dangerous levels of climate change. As summarized by Financial Times columnist Martin Wolf: "The conclusion is quite simple: burning known reserves of fossil fuels is incompatible with meeting the climate targets governments have set themselves." The Paris Agreement, adopted internationally in December 2015, aims to keep the global average temperature rise below 2 °C of warming, to avoid and reduce some of the most severe risks and impacts of climate change. But this requires carbon dioxide levels emitted in the atmosphere by 2050 to not exceed a "carbon budget" of up to 900 gigatonnes.Malte Meinshausen, Nicolai Meinshausen, William Hare, Sarah Raper, Katja Frieler, Reto Knutti, David Frame and Myles Allen, "Greenhouse- gas emission targets for limiting global warming to 2°C", Nature, volume 458, pages 1158–1163, 2009.
Delta Pi Delta was founded on October 17, 1958 by five freshmen students: Paul Taylor, Richard Barnes, David Thompson, Allen Tate, and Daniel Masterson at Mount Olive College. The men sought to create the first social fraternity at the young Baptist junior college despite previous efforts by the administration and founders of the institution to ban such social organizations. Reverend W. Burkette Raper, a Baptist minister and first president of Mount Olive College staunchly opposed fraternities and sororities or any other type of secret, social organizations or clubs at the College. In fall of 1958, the five men took a petition to the Student Council for approval to form a social fraternity. As Paul Taylor’s cousin, Martin Taylor, was President of the Student Council at the time, the petition met little opposition from the Student Council and with a majority vote was passed. The new fraternity initially took the name, K.A. Fraternity for “Knights of Apollo,” but the name was soon changed as many faculty and administration felt the name was too close to Kappa Alpha Order another national social fraternity.
