The Government of Ireland Act 1920 required the Commons to be summoned by the Lord Lieutenant and its members to take an oath of allegiance to the king,Government of Ireland Act 1920, §11(2) and §18(2) whereas the meeting on 14 January was summoned by Griffith and the members present did not take an oath.

However, the crisis was uneven (affecting longer the centre of the peninsula), as both Portugal and the Mediterranean coastline recovered in the later part of the century by fuelling a sustained growth. The aftermath of the intermittent 1640–1668 Portuguese Restoration War brought the House of Braganza as the new ruling dynasty in the Portuguese territories across the world (bar Ceuta), putting an end to the Iberian Union. Despite both Portugal and Spain starting their path towards modernization with the liberal revolutions of the first half of the 19th century, this process was, concerning structural changes in the geographical distribution of the population, relatively tame compared to what took place after World War II in the Iberian Peninsula, when strong urban development ran in parallel to substantial rural flight patterns.

Conan, the sword-and-sorcery character created by Robert E. Howard, is the protagonist of seven major comic series published by Dark Horse Comics. The first series, titled simply Conan, ran for 50 issues from 2004 to 2008; the second, titled Conan the Cimmerian, began publication in 2008 and lasted 25 issues until 2010; the third series, titled Conan: Road of Kings, started publishing in December 2010 and ended in January 2012 after 12 issues; a fourth series, titled Conan the Barbarian, continuing from Road of Kings, lasted 25 issues from February 2012 to March 2014; a fifth series, titled Conan the Avenger, started publishing in April 2014 and ended in April 2016 after 25 issues; a sixth and final series, titled Conan the Slayer lasted 12 issues from July 2016 to August 2017. The harshness of the ruling had prompted Rajoy's then-major parliamentary ally, Citizens (Cs), to publicly withdraw its confidence and supply support from the government and proclaim it as marking "a before and an after" in Spanish politics, previous to the motion's tabling by the PSOE. In October 1913, a friendly was held between the two teams to inaugurate Real Sociedad's Atotxa Stadium; the result was a 3–3 draw and the first goalscorer at the stadium was Pichichi, Athletic's legendary forward of the age who had also been the first scorer in the opening match at Athletic Bilbao's own new ground, San Mames, two months earlier. In the first three seasons, Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad were in the same competition, but due to repeated disputes by the rival provinces, these separated into the Biscay Championship – dominated by Athletic and Arenas Club de Getxo – and the Gipuzkoa Championship – usually won by Real Sociedad or Real Unión – which ran in parallel for sixteen years. In 1934 the top six clubs in the region, including Athletic and Real (then known as Donostia FC under the Second Spanish Republic which rejected regal names), were involved in the Basque Cup which ran until 1936 when the Spanish Civil War brought an end to organised football for three years.
