In March 1859, a Hurricane engine bolted off the rails at Bamber Bridge, ran across the level crossings and caught the end of a house, knocking down the gable end. The accident did not end with any death or injury, even though a woman was washing in the kitchen of the house. The Times, Monday, 14 March 1859; p.
In 1921, the Boston Transit Department (BTD)—the successor to the BTC—began work at Maverick Square to convert the East Boston Tunnel to high-floor metro trains. The next year, the BTD board approved the construction of high-level platforms at Atlantic Avenue, Devonshire, Scollay Under, and Bowdoin. Construction of concrete high-level platforms above the rails at Atlantic Avenue began in December 1923 or January 1924. A section of low-level platform was left to serve streetcars during construction.
It is then revealed that Zephyr was really Casanova, working to try to atone for his sins by undoing everything. Cornelius, angry at his son's death, elects to fire the gun and preserve history. In the final pages, Casanova is returned to male form, Kubark rails at his betrayal, and David X sneaks in and escapes with Xeno and Kubark. Casanova, now shunned by his father, agrees to work for E.M.P.I.R.E., though Cornelius will not recognize him as his son.

Broadside advertising reward for capture of Lincoln assassination conspirators, illustrated with photographic prints of John Surratt, John Wilkes Booth, and David Herold In the cities where the train stopped, 1.5 million people viewed Lincoln in his coffin. Aboard the train was Chauncey Depew, a New York politician and later president of the New York Central Railroad, who said, "As we sped over the rails at night, the scene was the most pathetic ever witnessed.
The crossing of existing rails at Nurieux and Chatillon-en-Michaille would have allowed construction to take place in phases. Options that could be combined with this project were upgrading the Pont-de-Veyle - Polliat section to 200 km/h, and electrification of the Sathonay-Bourg line, with construction of two new stations, Bourg-north and Nurieux. With these additions, the Paris - Geneva journey time would fall to 2h15 and Geneva Lyon to 1h04, Paris-Lausanne in 2h50 and Paris to Evian reduced by 90 minutes.
Olsen used the same plan when he converted Ringebu Stave Church into a cruciform church in 1630–1631. There the old stave church became the basis for the layout of the Latin cross. The technique is a paneled timbering, in which the timbering is marked by extensive use of slanted rails at a 45° angle up and down at the timber posts. The stave church has an elevated central area, and the basilica- like form was also continued in the timbering in the extension.
With only of space between some vehicles and the bridge supports, a report by the Inspector of Railways on 11 December 1846 concluded that they were dangerous. On 19 November 1842 a guard named William Parker was killed on the railway, his skull found fractured, and on 26 July 1844 a guard named James Cook was killed as he leant out and was struck by a support. It was also reported that the distance between rails at these bridges was only , whereas the normal distance was .

The train crashes into the pile of rails at the end of the track, setting off the nitroglycerin, killing Armand and destroying the train. With Zorro as an official witness, the governor signs the bill, and California becomes the 31st state of the United States of America. Felipe remarries Alejandro and Elena, and Alejandro apologizes to his son for hiding his identity, admitting that Zorro's identity is a family secret rather than just his own. With Elena's support, Zorro rides off on Tornado to his next mission.
A metre gauge point within standard gauge track at Saint-Valery sur Somme The line from Noyelles sur Mer to Le Crotoy is metre gauge. The line from Noyelles sur Mer to Saint-Valery Ville is of dual gauge, with metre gauge tracks laid within standard gauge track, thus having four rails. At Saint-Valery there is a branch to the Saint-Valery docks which is dual gauge, but having three rails only. The line from Saint-Valery Ville to Cayeux (Brighton Plage) is metre gauge.
The ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus uses the maxim "know thyself" in his play Prometheus Bound. The play about a mythological sequence, thereby places the maxim within the context of Greek mythology. In this play, the demi-god Prometheus first rails at the Olympian gods, and against what he believes to be the injustice of his having been bound to a cliffside by Zeus, king of the Olympian gods. The demi-god Oceanus comes to Prometheus to reason with him, and cautions him that he should "know thyself".
Guard rails at Diêu Trì railway station, Vietnam Track with guard rails in Myanmar, near Pekon In rail transport, guard rails or check rails are rails used in the construction of the track, placed parallel to regular running rail to keep the wheels of rolling stock in alignment to prevent derailment. They are generally used along areas of restricted clearance, such as a bridge, trestle, tunnel, or level crossing. They also helps to minimize damage to the structure and allows easier post-accident cleanup.
The dimensions of the "Washington" were: diameter of cylinders, 10 1/4 inches; length of stroke, 17 5/8 inches; number of boiler tubes, 78; outside diameter of tubes, 2 inches; length of tubes, 7 feet; diameter of driving wheels, 4 feet; and diameter of truck wheels, 30 inches. Although the rails at the time of the test were "wet with dew," the locomotive had no rail sander for increasing adhesion of the drivers. So remarkable was this accomplishment that reports in engineering journals doubted its occurrence.
The pressure plate also maintains film flatness in this horizontal design during exposure, aiding sharpness across the entire image. Other systems use film tension alone, or against rails at the film's edge, in more compact vertical-feed magazines found in 6×6 or 6×4.5 formats. The standard Pentax 6x7 outfit comprises the Super Takumar and later the Super Multi-Coated Takumar/6×7 105 mm f2.4 and the pentaprism finder that allows for the through- the-lens actual image (90% of actual area) of what is being composed.
The lock has three sliding gates constructed out of steel with caissons that allow to take ballast. The gates slide on a system of rollers on rails at the bottom at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the lock and disappear into special storage chamber or recess built into the sidewall of the dock. After a gate closes, it is ballasted with water and has to deballast before it opens again. There is one gate at each end of the lock and one in between (100 meters from the lower gate).
In contrast, her father has grown almost deranged in his spiritually-infused railing at the German "sons of hell". This comes to a head on Christmas Eve 1917 when Oskar receives news that his young sister has been killed by an allied bomb as she slept in her home in Mannheim. After he confides in Mona they embrace, only to be caught by her father who has pulled himself from his bed. Outraged, Mona's father rails at her as a “Harlot! Strumpet!” before passing out with a seizure from which he dies some days later.
Eventually, the authorities decide to send Allan to the Malmköping retirement home. He rails at its strict rules, and decides to escape. The book concludes with the 100-year-old Allan and his comrades flying to Indonesia, where they spend time at a luxury hotel managed by Amanda and her sons. When he is approached by a representative of the Indonesian government, who is interested in Allan's atomic bomb expertise, he agrees to help, telling himself that at least the Indonesian president, Yudhoyono, is sane - unlike the other leaders he has met in his lifetime.
Discussing the trial of a train driver following the 1984 derailment of a train near Morpeth he wrote: :The case of R v Allen 1985 illustrates the position which applied hitherto. The driver of a train which came off the rails at the Morpeth curve was prosecuted for driving under the influence of alcohol. However, the defence at the last minute provided medical evidence which suggested that at certain times the driver might pass out and the prosecution not having prior knowledge of this were unable to rebut it. The driver was acquitted.
Blocks B and E are long, two-storey, gable-roofed buildings, with north-facing verandahs on both levels. The lower levels are brick, set on concrete plinths, and the aluminium-framed upper levels are clad and lined in painted ribbed aluminium sheeting, including the eaves and first-floor verandah ceilings. The upper gable-ends are flat-sheeted and have square louvred vents. Large areas of aluminium-framed awning windows line the first floor northern and southern walls; the northern with fixed lower sashes and tubular steel rails at sill height along the verandah.
A commission of experts from the Istanbul Technical University's Civil Engineering and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering faculties prepared a technical report for the cause of the accident. The report, delivered to the Chief prosecutor of Kütahya Province on 24 April 2008, stated that the rails were imported from the Republic of South Africa in 1987 satisfying the conditions prescribed by the TCDD. The fact that the rails at the accident site were broken up to 38 pieces showed that the rail material became brittle under extreme cold. The train derailed due to fractured rails.
The Norton Fitzwarren rail crash occurred on 4 November 1940 between Taunton and Norton Fitzwarren in the English county of Somerset, when the driver of a train misunderstood the signalling and track layout, causing him to drive the train through a set of points and off the rails at approximately 40mph. 27 people were killed. The locomotive involved was GWR King Class King George VI which was subsequently repaired and returned to service. A previous significant accident occurred here on 10 November 1890 and the Taunton train fire of 1978 was also within 2 miles.
In 2006, as part of its "Three-Year Rail Network Plan", CN declared its intention to discontinue service on the Chester Spur, this being the last remaining portion of the original H&SW; trackage. The last freight trains operated on the spur west of Southwestern Junction through to the Lakeside Industrial Park in late 2007.Othen, p. 12 The rail corridor was purchased by the Halifax Regional Municipality and by October 2009, rails at level crossings were lifted and paved over"Off the Rails", Halifax Chronicle Herald, October 7, 2009, p.
Emboldened, she confronts the Selch chief and demands him to send her suitors and a teacher to school her in the art of Water Magic. The chief rails at her, but in the end brings four suitors, Trefor, Siarl, Rhodri and Mabon, and a teacher, Idwal. Her lessons begin in earnest, learning she is a Water Master and also spending time as a seal, and begins to fall for her teacher Idwal, even as the suitors begin to leave. In London, Sarah and Nan have returned from walking through the wildernesses of Africa.
Clary is credited with convincing the Macon and Brunswick Railroad to locate its tracks so that they crossed the Atlantic and Gulf rails at Jesup. On August 27, 1872, eastern sections of Appling land districts 3 and 4 were added to Wayne County. From its beginning, Jesup has been a railway town and as early as 1891, the town's population was essentially connected to the railroads in some way. In February 1873, the Georgia General Assembly called for a vote to be held in Wayne County to be held about removing the county seat.
Il Cicerone, the work for which he is best known, was published in six volumes in Milan between 1755 and 1774. He began composing it before 1743, and had already recited parts of it to literary audiences during his time in Rome. Consisting of 101 octave cantos and divided into three parts, it purports to be a biography of Cicero, a Roman orator, but contains lengthy satirical and ironic digressions in which he rails at fortune and the society of his own century. The language is unaffected and the tone bantering.
Handcar designed to be operated by a single person, widely known in North America as a Velocipede. Handcars have been normally used by railway service personnel (the latter also known as Gandy dancers) for railroad inspection and maintenance. Because of their low weight and small size, they can be put on and taken off the rails at any place, allowing trains to pass. Handcars have since been replaced by self- propelled vehicles that do not require the use of manual power, instead relying on internal combustion engines or electricity to move the vehicle.
At the airbase in Gangneung, floods submerged 16 jet fighters. Along the coast, high winds damaged 640 boats and about 200,000 marine buildings, and 265 industrial buildings were also damaged. The heavy rainfall left mudslides in the country, one of which covered ten cars in Gangneung. Flooding and the landslides disrupted the country's infrastructure; the storm destroyed 274 bridges and damaged roads and rails at 164 locations. Rusa killed 300,000 livestock and flooded 85,000 hectares (210,000 acres) of crop fields, representing 6% of the country's agricultural lands, mostly affecting fruit and vegetables.
Large round timber posts form the frame of the building, and the walls of the central gabled section are clad in corrugated metal sheeting. The walls of the skillion side sections to the east and west are constructed with vertical timber slabs and some corrugated metal sheeting. The eastern skillion section contains four cow bails formed by timber posts and rails. At the head of the bails small hatches are cut into the wall, enabling the cows to be fed chaff prepared in the centre section of the barn.
The measurement of crosslevel between two rails Crosslevel (or 'cross level') is the measurement of the difference in elevation (height) between the top surface of the two rails at any point of railroad track. The two points (each at the head of each rail) are measured at by the right angles to the reference rail. Since the rail can slightly move up and down, the measurement should be done under load. It is said to be zero crosslevel when there is no difference in elevation of both rails.
Randolph Columbus Barrett House is a historic home located at Doniphan, Ripley County, Missouri. It was built in 1881, and is a two-story, three bay, "T"-plan, frame dwelling with Classical Revival style design influences. It has a two-story front portico with rails at both levels, bracketed cornice and coupled posts, a semi-octagonal bay with bracketed cornice, and a two-story side gallery porch on the side of the rear wing. (includes 4 photographs from 1975) It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
The Wirral Railway had considered electrification since 1900, but plans were not taken any further until 1935, when increasing traffic prompted the LMS to revive the scheme. Authorisation was granted for the West Kirby and New Brighton lines, and work was completed by February 1938. The LMS had adopted a 650 V DC third-rail system which differed from the fourth-rail system of the Mersey Railway. To allow through services to run to Liverpool, all trains had to be able to operate with both systems, and automatic changeover devices were installed between each set of rails at Birkenhead Park.
A room in the palace Immediately after, Gustavo's daughter Rosimonda finds her quarters invaded by Frankish soldiers, including Faramondo. Faramondo is instantly struck with love for his fair captive. Even while she rails at him for killing her brother Sveno in battle, and for making an alliance with the Swabian king (Gernando) who is at enmity with the Cimbrians, Rosimonda too finds her heart captured by her erstwhile enemy, Faramondo. But their sudden love is hindered; King Gernando has plans to keep Rosimonda for himself, and he suspects that Faramondo is not immune to the princess.
The east verandah is enclosed by a cast iron balustrade and gates, all of which have timber cap The ceilings of the verandahs are elaborately panelled in timber around the main floor frames of the balcony. The first floor balconies have cast iron valances, brackets, posts and balustrades with timber cap rails. At the ends of each balcony one and a half bays have been enclosed with obscure glass and timber panelling to form sleep-outs and the iron decoration removed. The verandah and balcony to the service courtyard is all of timber with lattice valance to the ground floor.
So the bogies, central pivot, undercarriage and gun were unloaded in the Port of Sydney direct on the rails, at Jones Bay, Darling Harbour. From there, the gun was hauled to the N.S.W.G.R. Eveleigh Workshops, where with the assistance of Lieut. George Norman Pockett, Australian Army Engineer Ordnance Corps, all fittings and parts were reassembled. From Eveleigh the gun was hauled to Station East Box by a superheated T-class locomotive and from there pushed forward to a specially prepared track at Eddy Avenue, via a ramp, the rails of which sank under the weight (approximately 18½ tons per axle).
Ridden again by Donoghue, Gay Crusader started the 7/4 favourite against eleven opponents. Before the race Gay Crusader impressed observers with his condition and physique, and looked to be "the aristocrat of the party." Invincible took the early lead and made the running until half a mile from the finish when Dark Legend moved to the front. The favourite had some problems obtaining a run as he was boxed in against the rails at a crucial stage, but once clear he quickly took the lead and pulled away to win very easily by four lengths from Dansellon and Dark Legend.
Seneca rails "at great length" against the perversity of one Hostius Quadra, who surrounded himself with the equivalent of funhouse mirrors so he could view sex parties from distorted angles and penises would look bigger.Seneca, Natural Questions 1.16, as discussed by Reydams-Schils, The Roman Stoics, p. 112. Sexual severity opened the Roman Stoics to charges of hypocrisy: Juvenal satirizes those who affect a rough and manly Stoic façade but privately indulge.Juvenal, Satire 2.8–10, 15–17, as cited by Potter (2009), p. 340, with further references to her more in-depth discussions of Juvenal's portrayal in other studies.
Inside one can find original doors and rococo- classical forged rails at the ground-floor windows. After 1945 the manor house served as a school: At first it was used as a state Children’s Home for Orphans of the war, with the agricultural buildings serving as a kindergarten. Later it was turned into a special boarding school, and after that the building hosted the Vocational School of Agriculture. In the first half of the 1990s, the object was sold by the town hall to the Slovak Film Studios in Bratislava, which renovated the building and used it for recreational purposes.
Clockwise from top left: a horse and rider making their way through a sunken road obstacle set. These are combination jumps involving banks and rails. At the lower levels, it may consist of a bank down, with a few strides to a bank up. At the upper levels, the sunken road often is quite complicated, usually beginning with a set of rails, with either one stride or a bounce distance before the bank down, a stride in the "bottom" of the road before jumping the bank up, and another stride or bounce distance before the final set of rails.
The family lived principally at Raby, but was also at times based at Cavan, the Riley property at Yass.Kass February 2002: 10 Notes in the Riley papers refer to the painting of a paling entrance at the White gate, and to spikes for the bridge rails at the white gate.Kass February 2002: 31-32 The location of the gate and the bridge is not specified. In 1836 William Riley was killed in a riding accident and it appears that his father Alexander Riley largely withdrew from his Australian interests, as indicated by the selling his sheep.
Rails at the old Crossford station The Glasgow and South Western Railway (G&SWR;) fully opened its main line between Glasgow and Carlisle via Dumfries in 1850, revolutionising transport facilities at the places served. Communities that were by-passed began to feel disadvantages of not having a railway connection. As early as 1865 a branch railway to Moniaive was proposed: the G&SWR; paid two-thirds of the cost of a survey.David Ross, The Glasgow and South Western Railway: A History, Stenlake Publishing Limited, Catrine, 2104, In 1867 a determined effort was made to start construction.
These are typically powered by direct current (DC) where the voltage and polarity of the current controls the speed and direction of the DC motor in the train. A growing exception is Digital Command Control (DCC), where bi-polar DC is delivered to the rails at a constant voltage, along with digital signals that are decoded within the locomotive. The bi-polar DC carries digital information to indicate the command and the locomotive that is being commanded, even when multiple locomotives are present on the same track. The aforementioned Lionel O-Gauge system remains popular today as well.
At one point, Kulygin (her husband) blunders into the room, doting ever more foolishly on her, and she stalks out. Irina despairs at the common turn her life has taken, the life of a municipal worker, even as she rails at the folly of her aspirations and her education ("I can't remember the Italian for 'window'."). Out of her resignation, supported in this by Olga's realistic outlook, Irina decides to accept Tuzenbach's offer of marriage even though she does not love him. Chebutykin drunkenly stumbles and smashes a clock which had belonged to the Prozorov siblings' late mother, whom he loved.
They reduced her maximum speed to , but increased her fuel storage to which raised her range to , and her crew to 234 ratings. Her troublesome depth charge chutes were sealed off and their machinery was removed; her stern had to be rebuilt to accommodate two rails at the stern, each with a dozen Mk VIIH heavy depth charges, plus an additional four stored below decks. Her two existing depth charge throwers were replaced by four improved Thornycroft Mk IV throwers. The ship carried a total of twenty-four Mk VII light depth charges for the throwers.
In the subsequent trial, the family (known as the Maguire Seven, including Conlon's father) are convicted of supporting the Guildford bombing on the basis of nitroglycerin traces, receiving long terms of imprisonment. The confessed Guildford Four, including Gerry, are sentenced to life imprisonment. Gerry's time in prison shows a progression from a bitter son who rails at his father until an awakening when he is approached by new inmate Joe McAndrew, the real perpetrator of the bombing. McAndrew tells the Conlons that he had confessed the truth to the police, who then withheld the information to avoid official embarrassment.
Fortune states three times in her response to the plaintiff, "And also, you still have your best friend alive" (32, 40, 48); she also references his "beste frend" in the envoy when appealing to his "noblesse" to help Chaucer to a higher estate. A fifth reference is made by "Chaucer as narrator" who rails at Fortune that she shall not take his friend from him. While the envoy playfully hints to Lancaster that Chaucer would certainly appreciate a boost to his status or income, the poem Fortune distinctively shows his deep appreciation and affection for John of Gaunt.
Though typically flat the whole length on heavy-duty trucks, the rails may sometimes be tapered or arched for clearance around the engine or over the axles. The holes in rails are used either for mounting vehicle components and running wires and hoses or measuring and adjusting the orientation of the rails at the factory or repair shop. The frame is usually made of steel, but can be made (whole or in part) of aluminum for a lighter weight. A tow bar may be found attached at one or both ends, but heavy tractors almost always make use of a fifth wheel hitch.
The two at first intend to victimize one another, but upon realizing their similar proclivities, instead begin a torrid affair based on sex and murder. After learning that he is HIV-positive, writer Lucas Ransom reacts by rejecting all his former friends and breaking up with his teenage lover Tran. Increasingly embittered by his illness, Lucas vents his frustration through his alternate persona "Lush Rimbaud", host of a pirate radio program where Lucas rails at society's denial of gay men and the AIDS epidemic. Soon even this outlet isn't enough, and Lucas, sensing that death is approaching, becomes fixated on reconciling with Tran.
The cars were normally powered by two electric motors spinning steel wheels that ran on steel rails at high speeds, but could optionally include a traction gear that engaged rack gears between the running rails that allowed them to climb high grades at lower speeds. Optional elevator-like systems allowed the cars to move vertically as well. The idea was to build an offshore terminal with docks equipped with Dashaveyor tracks instead of a conventional container shipping port on land. An operator would load containers onto Dashaveyor cars, which would then enter a tunnel to move them at high speed to the shore.
The Dan Patch Line Bridge is a railroad swing bridge that carries the Canadian Pacific Railway's MN&S; Subdivision across the Minnesota River. The MN&S; Subdivision originated as the Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester and Dubuque Electric Traction Company, more commonly known as the Dan Patch Lines. Today's name for the rail line comes from the Minneapolis, Northfield and Southern Railroad, which took over the Dan Patch route after the original railroad fell into bankruptcy. Despite being met by Canadian Pacific rails at either end, the bridge itself is owned by the Twin Cities and Western Railroad which has trackage rights on the CP line to the north.
Because of extensive track degradation and outdated rolling stock, the Ivorian and Burkinabe governments have drawn up various plans to renovate and improve the railway line: In 2013, a plan to renovate the railway, with the aim of preserving and developing the rail transportation of goods and people between the two countries in satisfactory conditions of safety and comfort.REHABILITATION OF THE ABIDJAN-OUAGADOUGOU- KAYA RAILWAY LINE. Publication. Ivory Coast: Consultative Group, 2013. Print. The project involved renovating at least 50% of the rails at curves, and any weak tracks on straight sections; improving track maintenance efficiency; ensuring the continuous availability and safety of the track; and identifying the speed of trains.
He was not successful, though he did manage to purchase 50,000 tons of steel rails at a bargain price. Tupper's old friend Sandford Fleming oversaw the railway construction, but his inability to keep costs down led to political controversy, and Tupper was forced to remove Fleming as Chief Engineer in May 1880. 1879 also saw Tupper made a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George, and thus entitled to use the postnominal letters "KCMG". Tupper in September 1881 In 1880, George Stephen approached Tupper on behalf of a syndicate and asked to be allowed to take over construction of the railway.
The NTSB found that "a significant shift of cargo rearward at or before rotation did not occur and was not the cause of the initial extreme pitch up at rotation". Cargo compression or shifting may have occurred later. Ground crew interviews found that the flight was routinely full of pallets and the cargo locks were rarely engaged in some opinions, and it was further stated this was because they were thought to be irrelevant if the pallets could not move. Pallets are held by rails at the sides from moving in an upward direction, but only the retractable end locks can stop the forward-and-aft movement.
When the overhead line was raised in the Simplon Tunnel to accommodate taller rolling stock, a rail was used. A rigid overhead rail may also be used in places where tensioning the wires is impractical, for example on moveable bridges. Operation of the overhead conductor rails at Shaw's Cove Railroad Bridge in Connecticut In a movable bridge that uses a rigid overhead rail, there is a need to transition from the catenary wire system into an overhead conductor rail at the bridge portal (the last post before the movable bridge). For example, the power supply can be done through a catenary wire system near a swing bridge.
On January 8, 2019, Bombardier delivered the first Flexity Freedom vehicle to the Eglinton Maintenance and Storage Facility, which, according to Metrolinx, was "substantially complete and ready to receive the vehicles" by this date. Laying rails at the O'Connor stop In January 2019, the first concrete pour for the surface section occurred at the location of the future O'Connor stop at Eglinton Square. Before being encased in concrete, conduit pipes were laid to support communications and power cables for the Crosstown's stations and stops. From July 1 to late August 2019, Leslie Street at Eglinton Avenue was closed for the installation of tracks and infrastructure at the intersection.
The Swedish Navy earlier made the RB 08 anti-ship missiles with the Halland-class destroyers in the early 1960s. The main effect of Sweden's defence resolution of 1958 for the Swedish navy was restructuring into a lighter force consisting of fast attack craft (FAC) vessels and a halt to destroyer procurement. This posed a problem as the existing RB 08 missile required launch rails and a missile magazine in the destroyers, taking up space that was not there on smaller ships. Adding to the problems, each missile had to be individually prepared for launch and only two missiles could be on the launch rails at the same time.
English 17th-century wooden rails at St John's Church, Corby Glen Barriers of various kinds often mark off as especially sacred the area of a church close to the altar, which is largely reserved for ordained clergy. The templon was typical for the Late Antique period. In the Armenian Apostolic Church, curtains are still drawn to cut off that area during the holiest moments of the liturgy. In Eastern Orthodox and related rites, this evolved into a solid, icon-clad screen, called the iconostasis, that has three doorways which usually have doors and curtains that can be closed or drawn aside at various times.
Fish-belly rails used on the Cromford and High Peak lineThe M&KR; used stone block sleepers with Birkinshaw's patent malleable iron rails. At this early date the technology of rail configuration had not matured, but John Birkinshaw had secured a patent in 1820 for a T-section fish-bellied edge rail of malleable iron. His patent specified that they should be formed by passing through rollers—as they were fish-bellied, presumably only the head was shaped in the rollers. Cast iron, as used until then, is brittle and ill-suited to heavy railway use; malleable iron is heat treated after casting and is able to withstand shocks.
Illustration were described as playing futurist and early electronic music. Formed in 1979 by Tony Harrison and Timm Johnson, the group were together for approximately 3 years, rehearsing in the cellar of a clothes shop called 'Off The Rails' at the Little Underbank in Stockport, where the band was based. The group was composed of Tony Harrison on Vocals, Tim Johnson on guitar Paul Lancaster on bass, Julia Adamson on Keyboards and George Terry, now known as Morgan King, on drums. With manager Graham Cooper, the group made various demos for record companies and agreed to release one of these songs, Tidal Flow, taken from a demo engineered and produced by Phil Ault, on the Some Bizzare Album.
In autumn, Kris Kin was aimed at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, and first ran over the course and distance in the Prix Niel. He stayed on strongly in the straight but again finished third, this time behind Dalakhani and Doyen. Stoute felt that the colt would improve from the race, whilst Fallon was reported to be "unhappy" about the tactics of one of the French riders, who had kept him boxed against the rails at a crucial stage. In the Arc, he made little impression, and after being hampered on the turn into the straight, was eased down in the closing stages, finishing eleventh of the thirteen runners behind Dalakhani.
Evening Post, Volume CXXII, Issue 131, Monday 30 November 1936, p. 10. While operating the afternoon Hokitika to Greymouth service on 18 January 1937, a Midland railcar was involved in a fatal accident when it jumped off the rails at a level crossing near Arahura. Aboard were 19 passengers and 3 railway employees; William Jeffries, a Hokitika auctioneer, was killed, and twelve others were injured. The derailment was caused by loose stones on the track that were scattered by a herd of cattle that had recently crossed the line; the front wheels left the rails while the rear ones did not, and the railcar in this condition travelled for as the driver unsuccessfully sought to stabilise and stop it.
The result of Pettis's collaboration with Fisher was a step-pyramid weighing an estimated 100,000 pounds and reinforced with 3 ½ tons of steel rails. At the top sits an American eagle and a flag of the United States, resting on a blue concrete orb. Speculation has been offered by the National Park Service and others that it is possible Pettis might have been influenced by the Fireplace of States in Bemidji, Minnesota. Built by the Works Progress Administration in 1934–35, the Bemidji fireplace was constructed with stones from each of the then 48 states (Alaska and Hawaii were considered territories at the time of the monument's construction and world not become states until 1959 and 1960 respectively).
All of these have the advantage that they can be unloaded anywhere, but the disadvantage that any imperfection in the seals of the doors allows material to spill onto the track. In the mining industry, the long established standard for dumping mine cars was to run them into horns at the ends of the rails at the tipple. The inertia of the car would cause it and sometimes a short segment of hinged rail to tip forward, dumping the load out the end of the car.Les Benedict, director, The Last Pony Mine, part 2, Film Production Unit, Iowa State University, Ames, 1972; at 10:37 (2:12 in part 2), the film shows a mine car being dumped.
Along its route, 14 stations were created, almost all of them located every 20 km, which were named by a decree signed on October 7, 1914. The construction of this project achieved one of its objectives, that of promoting settlements in Patagonia, allowing the emergence of many localities in the northern area of Santa Cruz. November 25, 1911 appears as the date of arrival of the rails at "Km 200", the name by which Pico Truncado would be known for a long time, given that this is the distance that separates the station from the headwaters located in Puerto Deseado. The official inauguration took place on 31 December, 1913, when the railroad began operations.
The line is long with 29 stations. Almost all of its track is shared with the other London Underground sub-surface lines: from Hammersmith to Baker Street with the Circle line, from Baker Street to Aldgate with the Circle and Metropolitan lines, and from Aldgate East station to Barking with the District line. All its stations are shared with other lines. The line is electrified with a four-rail DC system: a central conductor rail is energised at −210 V and a rail outside the running rails at +420 V, giving a potential difference of 630 V. Much of the double-track railway from the Hammersmith terminus to Westbourne Park station is on a high brick viaduct.
The weather was quite foggy that night, reducing visibility, and the run was well known for its tricky curves. In the first section of the run, Jones drove from Memphis south to Grenada, Mississippi, with an intermediate water stop at Sardis, Mississippi ( into the run), over a new section of light and shaky rails at speeds of up to . At Senatobia, Mississippi ( into the run), Jones passed through the scene of a prior fatal accident that had occurred the previous November. Jones made his water stop at Sardis and arrived at Grenada for more water, having made up 55 minutes of the 75-minute delay. Jones made up another 15 minutes in the stretch from Grenada to Winona, Mississippi.
An articulated bogie is any one of a number of bogie designs that allow railway equipment to safely turn sharp corners, while reducing or eliminating the "screeching" normally associated with metal wheels rounding a bend in the rails. There are a number of such designs, and the term is also applied to train sets that incorporate articulation in the vehicle, as opposed to the bogies themselves. If one considers a single bogie "up close", it resembles a small rail car with axles at either end. The same effect that causes the bogies to rub against the rails at longer radius causes each of the pairs of wheels to rub on the rails and cause the screeching.
For the Dolter system a conductor cable was laid in a trench between the rails. At intervals a box was fitted between the rails that contained a stud (which protruded about above the road) and a bell crank. A magnet on a passing tram attracted this crank which then moved to make contact between the conductor cable and stud; once the tram moved away the crank dropped away and the stud was no longer connected to the cable. A long skate was suspended beneath each tramcar which was magnetised by electro-magnets and so both operated the cranks and collected the current that both moved the tram car and powered the electro-magnets.
The rounded surface of round bales poses a challenge for long-haul, flat- bed transport, as they could roll off of the flat surface if not properly supported. This is particularly the case with large round bales; their size makes them difficult to flip, so it may not be feasible to flip many of them onto the flat surface for transport and then re-position them on the round surface at the destination. One option that works with both large and small round bales is to equip the flat-bed trailer with guard-rails at either end, which prevent bales from rolling either forward or backward. Another solution is the saddle wagon, which has closely spaced rounded saddles or support posts in which round bales sit.
Black Rock (formerly known as Dalton) is a hamlet in South Australia on the Black Rock Plains at the intersection of the south-north RM Williams Way (B80) between Jamestown and Orroroo and the west-east Wilmington–Ucolta Road (B56) to Peterborough, in the Mid North section of the state. It is also the site (and name of) a former railway siding on the now removed Peterborough–Quorn railway line."Back on the rails at Black Rock" The Northern Argus accessed 30 April 2010 Located 19 km south east of Orroroo, the town was originally laid out as "Dalton" and proclaimed on 15 December 1881. It is named after a nearby hill identified by Captain E C Frome in 1842.
1871 map showing the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway in Texas, along with other railroads Andrew Briscoe initiated the first attempt to establish a railroad from Harrisburg, Texas, to the Brazos and Colorado Rivers. Houston's Morning Star published a notice on May 16, 1840, entitled "Harrisburg and Brazos Railroad," that claimed, "A large number of laborers are engaged at present in throwing up the track and preparing for rails at an early season, and a greater number will soon be employed." The first successful attempt to establish a Harrisburg Railroad line was Texian General Sidney Sherman, a hero of the Battle of San Jacinto. In 1847, Sherman purchased from the Harrisburg Town Company the unused town lots previously allocated to the failed Harrisburg and Brazos Railroad.
The track gauge was and fish-bellied rails were used, of on stone blocks. The inclines were all straight; the Law incline was laid with three rails at the top, four in the central section and two at the lower end; a high pressure engine was provided. The Balbeuchly incline had only a single track and was worked by a condensing engine; the Hatton incline also had a single track and had a similar engine. A newspaper advertisement stated that the line had been opened for traffic on 16 December 1831, but this was only on the upper levels, not including the Law and Hatton inclines; the extension to the full extent of the line was reported to have taken place on 3 April 1832.
Eighth Avenue was a station on the demolished IRT Sixth Avenue Line in Manhattan, New York City. It was built in 1881 by the Manhattan Railway Company as part of an effort to connect the northern end of the Sixth Avenue Line to the Ninth Avenue Line. It had three tracks and two side platforms, and was served by trains from the IRT Sixth Avenue Line. As a result, it became the last station on the Sixth Avenue Line before merging at a sharp curve with the Ninth Avenue Line. On September 11, 1905, 12 people were killed and 42 injured when a train jumped over the rails at the curve on 53rd Street between the Ninth Avenue 50th Street and 59th Street stations.
It would be built on the standard gauge, but the C&GWUR; could lay additional rails at its own expense to enable its broad gauge trains to operate.Barnes, page 117 onward In November 1837 the C&GWUR; reported that the condition of the money market was such that they were going to be unable to build all of their line in the foreseeable future, and that they proposed to concentrate on the Swindon end. The Birmingham and Gloucester Railway were alarmed by this as they relied on the C&GWUR; to build part of the shared Gloucester to Cheltenham line. The C&GWUR; needed a Parliamentary Act and the Birmingham company secured clauses enabling them to build the relevant portion themselves if the C&GWUR; did not proceed with the construction in a timely way.
The three princes are believed to represent the dukes of Lancaster, York, and Gloucester, and a portion of line 76 ("as three of you or tweyne") is thought to refer to the ordinance of 1390 which specified that no royal gift could be authorised without the consent of at least two of the three dukes. Most conspicuous in this short poem is the number of references to Chaucer's "beste frend". Fortune states three times in her response to the plaintiff, "And also, you still have your best friend alive" (32, 40, 48); she also refers to his "beste frend" in the envoy when appealing to his "noblesse" to help Chaucer to a higher estate. The narrator makes a fifth reference when he rails at Fortune that she shall not take his friend from him.
The Gurdon Light is a mystery light located near railroad tracks in a wooded area of Gurdon, Arkansas. It is the subject of local folklore and has been featured in local media and on Unsolved Mysteries and Mysteries at the Museum. The tracks are no longer in use, and the rails at least partially removed/covered, but it remains one of the most popular Halloween attractions in the area.Brown, Alan (2002) "Haunted Places in the American South", University Press of Mississippi, McNeil W. K, Clements William M. (1992) "An Arkansas Folklore Sourcebook" University of Arkansas Press, Unsolved Mysteries: Gurdon Light, NBC (December 1994)Tailor, Troy (1998) "Haunted Arkansas: The Gurdon Light" The light has been ascribed various colors, ranging from blue, green or white, to orange, and has been described as bobbing around.
The goddess journeys all over the entire world, until she comes across Mount Ebih and becomes infuriated by its glorious might and natural beauty, considering its very existence as an outright affront to her own authority. She rails at Mount Ebih, shouting: > Mountain, because of your elevation, because of your height, Because of your > goodness, because of your beauty, Because you wore a holy garment, Because > An organized(?) you, Because you did not bring (your) nose close to the > ground, Because you did not press (your) lips in the dust. Inanna petitions to An, the Sumerian god of the heavens, to allow her to destroy Mount Ebih. An warns Inanna not to attack the mountain, but she ignores his warning and proceeds to attack and destroy Mount Ebih regardless.
Mrs Verney stood by the rails at > Newmarket and no one would ever have guessed that in the hurly burly of the > racetrack, she was taking bets. While other bookmakers shouted out their > odds she hardly ever spoke. Under the guidance and tutelage of her mentor, Arthur Bendir, Helen Vernet was made a partner in the firm in 1928 and was paid a reputed £20,000 per year in salary and commission as Ladbrokes' on-course rails representative. In 1939 she was living in Hove, Sussex. While never one to hoard money, she enjoyed an elegant and comfortable lifestyle that afforded the Vernets the opportunity to eventually settle at 49 Eaton Place in London’s Belgravia and holiday regularly on the French Riviera where she liked to gamble at the casino tables.
Car 17 using the Doulter system in Torbay Road - the stud covers are the dark marks between the rails The town council of Torquay did not want their seaside resort disfigured by the poles and overhead wires of a conventional electric tramway and so invited the Dolter Electric Traction Company to construct a tramway using their stud-contact system. A conductor cable was laid in a trench between the rails.

Fire Compliance: Removed all combustible cupboards and stored materials in critical areas; removed former ladies robing room; installed new fire extinguishers and new fire notices and signage; Installed new smoke detection and fire alarm system, together with emergency lighting system in case of fire; provided new fire doors at entrances and to robing room ; provided fire proof cupboard in northern entrance and for sound system in robing room; fire- proofed balcony and upper robing room stairs; installed fire control panel in Vestry; reversed hinges on some firedoors .
The exterior of the main thermal spring pavilion showing the intricate geometric iron gates The purely 19th-century design includes three staircases leading to the main sunken spring, revisited in ceramic tile and iron rails. At the lowest level is the glass-enclosed fountain and spout, surrounded by overflow gutter The thermal park and spa are located in isolated urban context surrounded and delimited by walls surmounted by grade and crossed by the Ribeira da Folia. It is implanted to the left of the Estrada Nacional E.N.202, running west to east, while nearby are situated the Pensão do Peso and in its northwest interior the Ponte da Folia. The park is covered in trees and plants and crossed by a central avenue that connects to other paths, waterfalls and a small lake.
Laurentian on CPR rails at Westmount, Quebec in September 1968 Starting in 1967, the Napierville Junction Railway had two ALCO locomotives and 4 cabooses which served to pull consists from Upper New York State to Montreal, QC. For clearing the train crew through customs and passengers, the Lacolle railway station in Lacolle, Quebec, (7 miles from the NY state border) served as the stop for the NJR. From customs to maintenance this was the NJR's operating office, which then led to the Delaware and Hudson headquarters in Albany, NY. In 1971, the NJR's days were numbered when the D&H; merged the NJR back into one entity. This continued to operate like this until the early 1990s when the D&H; was bought and merged into the Canadian Pacific Railway thus turning the Rouses Point to Delson line into Canadian Pacific's Lacolle Sub.
In countries such as France, South Africa and the United Kingdom, a pair of permanent magnets beside the rails at either side of the neutral section operate a bogie-mounted transducer on the train which causes a large electrical circuit-breaker to open and close when the locomotive or the pantograph vehicle of a multiple unit passes over them. In the United Kingdom equipment similar to Automatic Warning System (AWS) is used, but with pairs of magnets placed the running rails (as opposed to the AWS magnets placed midway between the rails). Lineside signs on the approach to the neutral section warn the driver to shut off traction power and coast through the dead section. A neutral section or phase break consists of two insulated breaks back-to-back with a short section of line that belongs to neither grid.
In September 2005, the original cloak worn by Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi in George Lucas's Star Wars film was rediscovered hanging on the rails at Angels. Having been unwittingly available to the general public for some time as a monk's robe as well as being used as a crowd-scene costume in films including The Mummy, the provenance of the piece was confirmed by John Mollo, who created the item for the film in 1977, and received an Oscar for his efforts. The Obi Wan Kenobi cloak was auctioned by Bonhams in London on 6 March 2007 for £55,000. It formed part of a sale of 400 lots from the Angels archive – alongside costumes from James Bond, Dr Who, and Highlander, as well as items worn onscreen by Ava Gardner, Errol Flynn and David Niven.
London Underground track at Ealing Common on the District line, showing the third and fourth rails beside and between the running rails A train on Milan Metro's Line 1 showing the fourth-rail contact shoe. The London Underground in England is one of the few networks that uses a four-rail system. The additional rail carries the electrical return that, on third rail and overhead networks, is provided by the running rails. On the London Underground, a top-contact third rail is beside the track, energized at DC, and a top-contact fourth rail is located centrally between the running rails at DC, which combine to provide a traction voltage of DC. The same system was used for Milan's earliest underground line, Milan Metro's line 1, whose more recent lines use an overhead catenary or a third rail.
The report on the accident by Colonel Pringle stated that the LMS conversion from gas to electric lighting was not going as fast as the Board of Trade (HMRI) had hoped, and had the rolling stock of the train been electrically lit, the effects of the collision would have been greatly mitigated. It also recommended the installation of the GWR invention of automatic train control, a system which worked by having an insulated steel bar laid centrally between the rails at all distant signals. When a train passed over it, the bar made contact with a spring-loaded shoe and so raised it. When the lever in the signal box was at 'clear', the bar was electrified and when a train passed over it a bell was sounded in the cab because the current passed through the shoe.
After street railway companies started electrifying their systems around 1900, the term became 'electric street cars' or 'electric trams', to differentiate from the previous horse- drawn vehicles. As time went on the word 'electric' was dropped, and as automobiles began being referred to as cars, the term 'streetcar'(US) or 'tram'(UK) remained to describe a public transit vehicle that ran on rails at street level ; Hot chocolate : In the days before the invention of sweet solid chocolate for eating, the word "chocolate" was usually used to refer to the drink. For a while after the chocolate bar was invented it was referred to as "bar chocolate", but due to its rise in popularity in the latter half of the 19th century it eventually laid claim to the basic word. Some dictionaries however, still define "chocolate" as a drink as one of the definitions.
In 1965 and 1966, a pair of BB wagons had their bodies removed, and the underframes recoded QD 1 and 2 for the transport of crawler cranes operated by the Way and Works branch. A further two QDs, 3 and 4, were sourced from withdrawn VVEY guards vans 2 and 8 in 1985, though these had thinner frames. The decks were fitted with rails at one end with a narrow-gauge forklift type machine stabled on the deck. These rails would be connected to the VZSX sleeper wagons, and the forklift could run up and down the train length unloading sleepers as required.Norm Bray & Peter J Vincent, 2006, Bogie Freight Wagons of Victoria 1979 to 1999, p212-213, Sleepers were lifted and ejected over the top sides of the wagon, rather than through gaps along the sides.
One steam and one electric locomotive have been cosmetically restored, and are on display at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia. In October 2002 VGN authors and enthusiasts restored the Mullens, West Virginia Caboose Museum which had been ravaged in one of West Virginia's notorious floods. The work was funded by sale of handmade models and contributions. In April 2004 children of Boonsboro Elementary School in nearby Bedford, Virginia and the local Kiwanis group in Lynchburg, Virginia teamed to raise funds and work to save the railroad's only surviving original (circa 1910) class C-1 wooden caboose. In December 2004, a fully restored and equipped VGN caboose, C-10 No. 342, built by VGN employees in the former Princeton (WV) Shops, was moved to newly laid rails at Victoria, where it is the centerpiece of a new rail heritage park, dedicated in summer 2005.
Examples of such systems include modern cell phones, with GND and voltages such as 1.2 V, 1.8 V, 2.4 V, 3.3 V and PCs, with GND and voltages such as −5 V, 3.3 V, 5 V, 12 V. Power- sensitive designs often have multiple power rails at a given voltage, using them to conserve energy by switching off supplies to components which are not in active use. More advanced circuits will often have pins carrying voltage levels for more specialized functions and these are generally labeled with some abbreviation of their purpose. For example, VUSB for the supply delivered to a USB device (nominally 5 V), VBAT for a battery, or Vref for the reference voltage for an analog-to-digital converter. Systems combining both digital and analog circuits often distinguish digital and analog grounds (GND and AGND), helping isolate digital noise from sensitive analog circuits.
Atrocious Conduct in a Railway Company, article in the > Doncaster Chronicle newspaper, recorded in Joy, page 113 Grinling's account of the event is much more prosaic: > some over-zealous officers of the former [Midland Railway] Company took the > high-handed action of pulling up the junction rails at Methley to prevent > these trains from running, and it was only by producing their agreement with > King Hudson and threatening legal proceedings that the Great Northern > authorities got them replaced in time. This done, however, the Company was > able to profit considerably by the race-going excursionists.Grinling, page > 86 It was not until 1 October that the Midland Railway relented, and GNR trains ran to Leeds by their route. In 1849 the GNR decided to use a separate station at Leeds to save money, and it told the three other companies in the joint Central Station scheme that it would withdraw.
Marsh's insurance brokering and risk management business began in the first decade of the twentieth century, when it was formed by Henry Marsh and Donald McLennan with operations in New York and Chicago, where McLennan had studied railroad risk and insurance needs by spending 30 days riding the rails. At the time, the company was known as Marsh & McLennan (M&M;). Today, Marsh's insurance brokerage unit operates as a separate business, known simply as Marsh, in a holding company structure, yet many media reports still erroneously refer to this brokerage unit as Marsh & McLennan. The 1960s era was a particularly notable period for the company, including an initial public offering in 1962 and a 1969 reorganization that brought about the holding company configuration, whereby the company began to offer its services under the banners of separately managed companies. In 2001, as the company continued to expand globally, Marsh acquired South African company Alexander Forbes’ African risk management and brokerage businesses in 11 countries for $115.5 million.
World's first trolleybus, Berlin 1882 In parallel to the development of the bus was the invention of the electric trolleybus, typically fed through trolley poles by overhead wires. The Siemens brothers, William in England and Ernst Werner in Germany, collaborated on the development of the trolleybus concept. Sir William first proposed the idea in an article to the Journal of the Society of Arts in 1881 as an "...arrangement by which an ordinary omnibus...would have a suspender thrown at intervals from one side of the street to the other, and two wires hanging from these suspenders; allowing contact rollers to run on these two wires, the current could be conveyed to the tram-car, and back again to the dynamo machine at the station, without the necessity of running upon rails at all." The first such vehicle, the Electromote, was made by his brother Dr. Ernst Werner von Siemens and presented to the public in 1882 in Halensee, Germany.
Since the railway had significant needs for treated wood, notably for making sleepers, a sawmill, a joinery and a carpentry shop were set up at Moulin Neuf, as well as facilities for impregnating and creosoting wood and chairing sleepers. Main building The facilities continued to be enlarged with the creation of an electric power station, forge and machine shops, and in 1933 the works had 850 employees and included an apprentice school. Moulin Neuf provided the Nord rail network with everything necessary for construction and upkeep in terms of wood, tooling, and track. From 1931 on, Moulin Neuf took over the functions of the former works at Ermont and was enlarged onto another 10 hectares, with a gantry and a workshop for machining rails. At the beginning of the Second World War, more than 1,000 people worked on site; in the early 1960s, 1,150. The Nord company built 160 units of housing for their workers in a company town at Chambly between 1920 and 1930; after 1930 this grew by roughly 100 houses. The site was bombed on several occasions, particularly in 1944.
The selector switch is the same, except that the semi-auto selection is at a 45 degree angle instead of a 90 degree. The handguard is removable, and comes with integrated picatinny rails at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions, as well as M-LOK slots at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions for attaching compatible devices, including picatinny rail sections; it also comes with a removable rail cover to cover the 6 o'clock rail when not in use. The main receiver of the Tavor 7 comes with a picatinny rail across the top. The ejection on the Tavor 7 can be reversed by pulling the brass deflector open to the opposite side of the port and then turning it 180 degrees, and then doing the same but closing it on the other side; the bolt then also needs to be rotated 180 degrees and the cam pin flipped to the opposite side (indicated by an R or an L). The non-reciprocating charging handle is reversible as well.
From Superior to Duluth, the train would be on BNSF again, crossing the Grassy Point swing bridge back into Minnesota and then turning northeast to travel along the shore of St. Louis Bay. The train would exit BNSF rails at Rice's Point and would then run along the North Shore Scenic Railroad for a short segment into the Duluth Union Depot. A preliminary study from around the year 2000 projected a cost of $79 million to purchase rolling stock and upgrade track along the existing line, though this apparently only anticipated service. The cost projection grew to $320 million in 2008, and $615 million in 2009, with a "worst-case scenario" number of $990 million. Up to 80% of the cost may be covered by the federal government, only requiring 20% from state and local sources. This is comparable to highway projects which often receive 80% or 90% funding from the federal government, and is in contrast to the Hiawatha light rail and Northstar commuter lines which received 50% matching federal funds.
Nine Marrawah Tramway employees on a trolley on the wooden tramline section near Marrawah, where wooden rails were used, 1931 A trip on the tramway, before the wooden rails at the section close to Marrawah had been replaced by steel rails, was described by an eye witness as follows: :"Descending the “Kick” the trucks rattle round several sharp curves, all the time on the down grade, and through cuttings and sidings, to the nine mile, where Britton’s tram from Christmas Hills meets the main line. Then across the flat swampy area past the fourteen mile mill and so on to the seventeen mile, where the steel rails end. Goods and passengers are transferred to the Horse Tram, under the charge of Mr. T. Marshall, and the final stage of the journey is entered upon, through cuttings so close that the driver has only to reach out to snatch a stone to throw at a laggard horse, and thence on to the farm country towards our goal at Marrawah."Marrawah Tramway. The Story of Circular Head’s first Rail-transport system.
For his first appearance of 2005, Phoenix Reach was sent to the United Arab Emirates for the Dubai Sheema Classic at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse on 26 March. He started the 5/1 fourth favourite behind the Arc de Triomphe winner Cherry Mix, running for Godolphin, he South African challenger Greys Inn winner of the Durban July and Dubai City of Gold, and Powerscourt the disqualified "winner" of the 2004 Arlington Million, with the other runners including Collier Hill, Prince Arch (Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap) and Maraahel (Gordon Stakes). The horse's owner, Andrew Christou, a keen believer in faith healing and astrology had a dream before the race which led him to believe that Phoenix Reach would win if Christou touched the belly of a pregnant woman: the Channel 4 presenter Alice Fox-Pitt was the recipient of this supposedly lucky touch. Drawn on the far outside of the eleven runner field, Phoenix Reach started slowly with Dwyer moving left to race along the rails at the back of the field in the early stages.
The rest of the line from Dunkirk to Buffalo opened on February 22. The Erie and North East Railroad was chartered April 12, 1842, to build the part from the state line west to Erie, PA, and opened on January 19, 1852. On November 16, 1853, an agreement was made between the two railroads, which had been built at broad gauge, to relay the rails at to match the Franklin Canal Company's railroad (see below) on the other side of Erie, and for the Buffalo and State Line to operate the Erie and Northeast. This would result in through passengers no longer having to change trains at Erie, and on December 7, 1853, the Erie Gauge War began between the railroads and the townspeople. On February 1, 1854, the relaying was finished and the first train passed through Erie. On May 15, 1867, the two companies between Buffalo and Erie merged to form the Buffalo and Erie Railroad. ;Cleveland to Toledo The Junction Railroad was chartered March 2, 1846, to build from Cleveland west to Toledo. The Toledo, Norwalk and Cleveland Railroad was chartered March 7, 1850, to build from Toledo east to Grafton on the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati Railroad.
