Though the culprit is still at large, a team of researchers at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) in Western Australia is working tirelessly to crack the case—and to restore law and order.

"We were the first to image this elusive disk and study its rotation," Elena Murchikova, the lead author of the new paper and an astrophysicist at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, said in a release from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.
Komossa, an astronomer at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, hopes to find more binary supermassive black holes: black holes forced to cohabitate after their own galaxies collided, which future space-based gravitational wave experiments will also search for.

"As is often the case in astrophysics we really need multiwavelength observations to truly understand the physical processes at work," said study co-author Melanie Johnston-Hollitt, director of the Murchison Widefield Array and astrophysicist at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy in Australia.
The estimated rate of such events in the Milky Way is one to three per century and the last known example, concealed from human eyes at the time by dust and gas but discovered subsequently by radio astronomy, occurred near the beginning of the 20th century.
Queqiao is also carrying a radio-astronomy package called the  Netherlands-China Low-Frequency Explorer  (NCLE), which will hunt for radio emissions from the universe&aposs infancy, study space weather, characterize the radio environment of the Earth-moon system and make a range of other measurements.
"The probability that a drone or high-altitude plane would take a picture at exactly the same time from exactly the same viewing direction is minute," says Cees Bassa, an astronomer at the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy who independently arrived at results nearly identical to Langbroek's.

The sounds he sorted through yielded ten minutes of usable raw material out of two hours worth of recordings, but over the years his archive expanded, as he was granted access to recordings from the Kennedy Space Center, the Very Large Array, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, and more research facilities.
"Observations with the next generation of radio telescopes will tell us more about what actually happens when a star is eaten by a black hole -- and how powerful jets form and evolve right next to black holes," Stefanie Komossa, astronomer at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, said in a statement.

At the other sites, members of the radio astronomy community are helping make older telescopes new again: They are developing a new Arecibo receiver that would game-change its view, and a Green Bank collaboration is working on a receiver called Argus+ to make, among other things, fast, detailed maps of molecules in galaxies and places where new stars are forming.
Radio astronomy projects like these are important for our understanding of the universe (and potentially extraterrestrial life) but Halpern said that due to radio interference from cell phones and other frequency-emitting devices like car key fobs, it might just be a matter of time before the radio waves are so clogged up that we can't process any incoming signals.
