In 1934 he was hired as a secretary in the Norwegian Horticulture Society, succeeding Olav Skard. He edited the society's magazine Norsk Hagetidend from 1935 to 1960. He also edited a quarterly periodical from 1935 to 1939, the yearbook Frukt og Bær from 1948 as well as the annual publication Minneliste for hagedyrkere and the quintennial publication Sortsliste for hagedyrkere. From 1953 to 1970 Hildrum was the director of the Norwegian Horticulture Society.

Dublin Contemporary was originally planned for 2010 and was "conceived as a documenta-style quintennial", and "a visual art exhibition on a scale never seen in Ireland before". It has been compared to the large Irish survey Rosc exhibitions from the 60's-80's – in fact, Rosc '80 also took place in Earlsfort Terrace. IMMA Head of Exhibitions, Rachel Thomas was "responsible more than anyone else for its existence". Thomas approached independent contemporary visual art curator Oliver Dowling in 2005 with the idea of an international-scale exhibition in Dublin. The charitable organization 'St Patrick’s Festival' was tasked with the delivery of the exhibition.

Thus, by 2008 there were three dedicated university chairs in the subject, with Amsterdam and Exeter also offering master's degree programs in it. Several conferences on the subject were held at the quintennial meetings of the International Association for the History of Religions, while a peer-reviewed journal, Aries: Journal for the Study of Western Esotericism began publication in 2001. 2001 also saw the foundation of the North American Association for the Study of Esotericism (ASE), with the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (ESSWE) being established shortly after. Within a few years, Michael Bergunder expressed the view that it had become an established field within religious studies, with Asprem and Granholm observing that scholars within other sub-disciplines of religious studies had begun to take an interest in the work of scholars of esotericism.

Joshi served the Quintennial Review Team of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad as a member and chaired the Research Advisory Committees of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, the Central Institute for Cotton Research, Nagpur, NABARA, Mumbai and the Agharkar Research Institute, Pune. He headed the Indian Agricultural Universities Association as its president in 1980. He was also associated as a member with several international projects such as the International Team for Improvement of Agricultural Research Organization in Indonesia (1969), the advisory committee of Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), Washington DC, USA (1973–77) and the World Bank Mission to Tanzania (1979). He was the project manager of the FAO/UNDP project on the improvement of field crop productivity in Egypt and a member of the board of directors of the International Potato Research Institute, Lima (1972–76).
