In 2009 SCI put in a bid to purchase Keystone North America for $208 million. The purchase was completed in 2010 and added about 200 locations. In May 2013 SCI signed a $1.4 billion deal to purchase Stewart Enterprises, the second-largest death care company. In December 2013, the FTC imposed conditions on the acquisition, requiring the two companies to sell 53 funeral homes and 38 cemeteries in 59 local markets, and requiring the merged company to be subject to a ten-year period during which the FTC will review any attempt by the company to acquire funeral or cemetery assets in those local markets.

Brown was drafted to Collingwood with the 50th pick of the 2017 AFL draft, which was Collingwood's third and final pick, under the father–son rule after Port Adelaide put in a bid for him. He has been compared to his father, Gavin Brown, with Eastern Ranges coach, Darren Bewick saying "he's a shy boy, very introverted in the way he goes about his business, but like his old man, he has a lot of ability." Brown got his first taste of senior football when he played in a pre-season match against Fremantle in the 2019 JLT Community Series. In 2010, the board of England Hockey put in a bid to host the Men's and Women's World Cups at the same time in 2014, but the competitions were awarded to The Hague, with the FIH promising London a chance to hold an event in 2015 or 2016.

Nottingham Forest, the reigning First Division champions and League Cup holders managed by Brian Clough, put in a bid for Francis which totalled just over £1 million. No player had ever been sold between English clubs for a seven-figure fee before (the erstwhile record was less than half), and the deal was sealed, with Francis famously being introduced to the media by a manager impatient to play squashClough was in his red gym kit and carrying a racquet as he addressed the press conference. While recognised as the first British million-pound player, the actual transfer fee for the player was £1,150,000, including 15% commission to the Football League. Clough wrote in his autobiography that the fee was £999,999, as he wanted to ensure the million-pound milestone did not go to the player's head, although Francis says that was a tongue-in-cheek remark by Clough.

Problems with refuelling and water led Brunel to think in terms of larger ships for this voyage, but five more were built in the same class. He was held in high regard by Isambard Kingdom Brunel who made him a partner in his project to build Great Eastern. Although the original conception, the cellular construction and the joint use of paddle and screw were Brunel's ideas, "the ship embodies the wave-line form, the longitudinal system of construction, the complete and partial bulkheads, and other details of construction which were peculiarly Scott Russell’s". The project was plagued with a number of problems—Scott Russell put in a bid which was far too low with the result that he was bankrupt halfway through, though he recovered to finish the job; but it was Brunel that insisted on a sideways launch rather than the dry dock that Russell preferred.
