After the release of the mixtape Game was asked how long it took him to make the mixtape he stated that the mixtape took him about seven days to put it all together.. On August 3, 2010, Game released the mixtape titled Brake Lights, which was availablly to download through XXL, once again hosted by DJ Skee. The tape featured guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Nas, T.I., Akon, Rick Ross, Waka Flocka Flame, Busta Rhymes, Robin Thicke and Shawty Lo, along with the production handled by several producers, including DJ Toomp, J.R. Rotem, Lex Luger and Rich Skillz, among others. In an interview with XXL, Game revealed Brake Lights was designed to be an appetiser to The R.E.D. Album, released mainly to keep up anticipation for the album until its completion. On January 24, 2011, Game released the double disc mixtape Purp & Patron, once again (for the third time in the row) hosted by DJ Skee, alongside by Funkmaster Flex.

After having a few false starts with chart failing singles, starting back with 2009's "Krazy" (which featured both Gucci Mane & Timbaland) and "Big Money" followed by 2010's "It Must Be Me" (in which it featured Pharrell) and "Ain't No Doubt About It" (which it featured Justin Timberlake & Pharrell) all failing to chart, Game decided to have them all removed from the album and instead release them on mixtapes, those including on The Red Room and the Brake Lights mixtapes. With the album also reportedly suffering numerous delays since 2009, Game also decided to have canceled a series of listening sessions so that he could focus on recording new material for the album. Later in 2011 following the release of his critical acclaim mixtape Purp & Patron, which immediately became widely praised as one of the best hip hop mixtapes of 2011. After generating buzz from the mixtape, Game regained the center of attention on when he was officially going to release the album's official single.
